2 THE UNEXPECTED Oklahoma s 2008 season ended just one win shy of the program s sixth trip to the Women s College World Series The Sooners finished their season with an overall mark of and finished second in the Big 12 with a 16-2 conference record, its second best league record in school history. Oklahoma also won the first Super Regional game in school his- tory after going 0-5 in its first five Super Regional contests dating back to The Sooners finished the year ranked 10th in the polls. I m so proud of this team for pushing until the very vp end, head coach Patty Gasso said of her 2008 squad. Obviously, you want to win all the championships you can, but this team surprised a lot of people this year. Most of all, they fought until the very end and that is all you can ask for. Non-Conference Play Another challenging nonconference cen schedule faced the Sooners in OU s first game was against 10th-ranked UCLA. During non-conference oā play, OU went and recorded key wins against San Diego State, Georgia and UCLA. Conference n Play The Sooners finished second in the league standings in 2008 with their only two losses coming to confer- ence champion Texas A&M. During league play, OU defeated Nebraska, Iowa State and Baylor in series on the road. The Sooners also retained the Bedlam Bell after sweeping the series with archrival Oklahoma State. BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR SAVANNAH LONG Postseason Play Oklahoma won its ninth NCAA Regional, defeating Oregon (6-0, 11-0) and Arkansas (6-5) in Norman. The Sooners then advanced to the Tucson Super Regional. Arizona took the opening contest 3-1 but Oklahoma rallied back to win 2-0 to force a deciding third game. In that contest, OU came up short of another trip to the Women s College World Series as the Wildcats prevailed 5-2. Awards and Honors OU placed seven players on All-Big 12 teams as Amber Flores, Savannah Long, D.J. Mathis, Samantha Ricketts and Lindsey Vandever highlighted the coaches All-Big 12 first team. Seniors Susan Ogden and Lauren Eckermann collected second team honors. Ricketts picked up her third straight first team honor, while Flores recorded her second straight. Eckermann, Ogden and Long received the second All-Big 12 honor of their careers, while Mathis and Vandever made their first appearances on the All-Big 12 teams. The Sooners tied with Texas A&M, the Big 12 regular season champions, with the most first team selections. Oklahoma has placed at least five members on the All-Big 12 team every year since the inception of the league in Five Sooners were named to the All-Midwest Region team, including a regional-best four on the first team. Mathis, Vandever, Long and Flores were named to the first team, while Ricketts earned second team honors. It marked the second consecutive year the Sooners placed at least five players on the all-region squad. Oklahoma had three players named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America teams. Flores, Mathis and Long represented the Sooners on the second team All-America squads. It marked the first All-America honor for all three Sooners. Flores, a sophomore, was a first team All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region selection and led the squad with a.381 batting average with 15 home runs and 46 RBI. Flores, an at-large selection, set an OU single season record with 45 walks on the year. She was also one of 25 quarterfinalists for USA Softball s National Player of the Year. Mathis was solid in the circle for the Sooners as she posted a 31-7 overall record and finished with a 1.18 earned run average. Mathis collected first team All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region honors and earned the conference ERA title in overall games and league games during the regular season. Mathis joined Flores as one of 25 finalists for USA Softball s National Player of the Year. Senior captain Long closed out her career with a solid season, hitting.359 with 13 home runs and 39 RBI. The shortstop also became the first non-catcher to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year since its inception in The shortstop was solid on the defensive end where she recorded a.974 fielding percentage and only five errors on the year. Four Sooners were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team. Leading the pack were first-team honorees Eckermann, Long and Ricketts. Listed on the second team was Mathis. Long made her second career appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 team while Eckermann, Ricketts and Mathis each received their first career honor. Eckermann was named to the ESPN the Magazine/ Academic All-District VI Softball first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Eckermann was also recognized for her community involvement as she was chosen as one of 10 softball finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. Ricketts was named to the Big 12 s All-Tournament team after going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double. She also added four RBI in OU s 6-5 loss to Nebraska. The three-time All-Big 12 selection tied her single-game best in the contest with 10 total bases. Oklahoma battled to force the third game in the best-of-three series by shutting out the Wildcats, 2-0, in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday to even the series at 1-1. Arizona won the opening contest 3-1 to take a 1-0 series lead. FLORES BREAKS SINGLE SEASON WALKS MARK OU s leadoff batter Amber Flores was solid, leading the team in batting average and walks. Flores set a single season record for walks with 45 on the year. The previous season high was 41 set by Casey Dickson (1997) and Heather Scaglione (2004). Below is a look at where each player sits on the single season list. Number Year 1 Amber Flores Casey Dickson Heather Scaglione Christy Ring Samantha Ricketts EXTRA INNINGS The Sooners played five extra-inning contests in 2008 and were perfect in those contests with a 5-0 record. Oklahoma topped Arkansas, 6-5, in 11 innings in the Norman Regional. The Sooners only other extra-inning win at home was a inning win over Texas Tech in the first game of a doubleheader. OU topped Cal Poly in eight innings on a neutral field (Sacramento, Calif.) while taking two extra-innings wins on the road. The Sooners went eight innings at Arkansas, s, but came out with the 3-2 win. Oklahoma beat Baylor in its gest game of the year as the Sooners won, 9-4, in 12 innings. lon- nings. ECKERMANN THROWS PERFECT GAME Senior pitcher Lauren Eckermann, 2007 s Co-Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, got back in the groove against St. Gregory s on Feb. 12. Eckermann threw the first perfect game of her career. Eckermann picked up her first win of the season in dramatic fashion as she became only the sixth OU player since the start of Big 12 play to throw a perfect game and the first pitcher to do it since Jennifer Stewart tossed a perfect game against Texas-Arlington on Feb. 8, The perfect game also marked the fourth no-hitter of Eckermann s career at OU as she tossed three during the 2007 season. 14TH STRAIGHT 40-WIN SEASON Head coach Patty Gasso notched her 14th straight 40-win season with a sweep of Texas. It marked the 15th straight 40-win season for the program and the 18th time in school history. The Sooners are the only team in Big 12 Conference history to notch 40-win seasons in all 13 years of the league s existence. Below is a look at the number of 40-win seasons by each Big 12 teams since the conference began. Team 40-Win seasons since 1996 Oklahoma 13 Nebraska 7 Texas 6 Texas A&M 5 Baylor 4 Missouri 4 Oklahoma State 2 Texas Tech 1 OU BREAKS HOME RUN RECORD The Sooners set a school record against Pacific on Feb. 22 as Oklahoma pounded six home runs. The previous OU record for home runs in a game was five and it had been done twice. The 1996 squad pounded five against Tulsa (April 11) while the 2005 team hammered five against ain Texas A&M. OPPONENTS NOT STEALING ON VANDEVER Sophomore catcher Lindsey Vandever made a name for herself as one of the top catchers in the league and around the country. Her reputation showed in conference play as Big 12 teams attempted a conference-low 15 stolen base against the Sooners and were successful only nine times. Three of those successful attempts came against replacement Susan Ogden as Vandever missed the Missouri series. In overall games, opponents stole 21-of-34 bases on Vandever. HOME IS WHERE THE W IS The Sooners closed out their home season with a 23-1 home record at the OU Softball Complex. Its only blemish of the season was a 3-2 loss against Missouri State. MATHIS, FLORES QUARTER FINALISTS FOR POY OU junior pitcher D.J. Mathis and sophomore infielder Amber Flores were named two of the 25 candidates for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, announced the Amateur Softball Association, the national governing body of softball in the United States, on April 9. However, neither was selected as one of the 10 semifinalists for the award. It marks the sixth straight season that the Sooners have had at least one candidate on the list of 25 and the second consecutive year that OU has had two players on the list. Last season, Samantha Ricketts was one of three finalists for the award. Oklahoma is the only Big 12 team with more than one candidate on the list. Texas A&M s Megan Gibson is the only other Big 12 player on the list. Neither Mathis or Flores were on the Preseason Watch List comprised of 40 players. TEAM USA EDGES OKLAHOMA, 2-0 Playing the nation s top softball players on March 25, the Oklahoma softball team kept it close as the USA National Team edged the Sooners, 2-0, in front of 3,591 fans at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The exhibition game did not count toward OU s overall stats this season, but Oklahoma kept the game entertaining. OU starter D.J. Mathis gave up two earned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one in 5.1 innings of work. HALEY ANDERSON 109
