The game can be heard on KEBC 1560 in Norman or online via link on SoonerSports.com. Friday s game will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma, while Saturday s game is on Fox College Sports Pacific and Sunday will be shown nationally on Fox Sports Network. The Sooners are 15-5 all-time in Big 12 home openers, including four straight wins. In those four wins, OU has outscored opponents This will be the third time that OU opens conference play against KU after taking wins in 2008 and WEEKEND PROMOTIONS The first 500 fans to Friday s game will get an OU tote bag. Saturday is Kady Self Day. The first 250 fans get a Self poster and a selfie stick. Sunday is Strike Out Cancer Day. The team will wear pink jerseys and the first 400 fans will receive a pink t-shirt. In addition, it s Sundae Sunday where the first 250 fans will get a mini helmet with ice cream. Kids can also run the bases postgame. FACING KANSAS Oklahoma has a (.574) all-time advantage over Kansas, including a (.705) mark in Norman. Since OU head coach Patty Gasso arrived in 1995 the Sooners own a (.797) edge in the series. The Sooners have won two straight in the series, five of the past six matchups and 13 of the past 15 contests. LAST TIME THEY MET Kansas was only one of seven teams to beat the Sooners a year ago, though OU won the season series 2-1. In the opener, Kansas only had three hits but two of them were two-run homers in a 4-2, eight-inning win. OU responded in game two with a 13-0, five-inning win. Kady Self doubled twice and drove in three, while Erin Miller was 2-3 with two RBI and four runs scored. Paige Parker struck out six in three hitless innings of work, while also going 2-2 with two runs scored. A 7-4 win in the series finale clinched OU s fourth straight Big 12 title. Eight of OU s opponents are ranked in at least one of the two latest polls and eight more are receiving votes. Oklahoma has faced 11 of those 18 opponents so far, going 7-6 (played Minnesota and BYU twice). Oklahoma s six losses this season have come to teams that are a combined (.752). In fact, Oklahoma has played the 11th-toughest schedule in the country (.620) so far based on opponents cumulative win percentage (games through 3/27). Looking ahead to the remainder of OU s schedule, Sooner opponents have a.603 cumulative winning percentage, which ranks 40th in the country. Combining OU s past opponents with its future foes, OU s opponents have a.614 cumulative win percentage, which ranks 15th in the country. OU CONTINUES REMARKABLE RUN IN NATIONAL POLLS After going 2-0 last week, OU stayed at No. 13 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll and No. 14 In the ESPN.com/ USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 for the fourth straight week. Oklahoma is the only program to be ranked every week of the NFCA poll, 313 straight polls. In addition, OU stayed at No. 12 in the latest RPI poll for the second consecutive week. SENIOR CLASS AMONG THE NATION S BEST The 2016 campaign marks the final season for seniors Erin Miller, Whitney Montgomery, Tori Nirschl, Kady Self, Kelsey Stevens and Paris Townsend. Over the last 3+ years (Stevens transferred to OU in 2014, Nirschl in 2015), only Florida and Oregon have a better win percentage, and only three teams have more wins (games through 3/30). Florida Oregon Michigan Oklahoma Alabama FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTING RIGHT AWAY With the graduation of one of the best senior classes in school history, OU needed one of its largest freshman classes ever to make up that production. So far, they re doing just that. Sydney Romero (3B) has started all 30 games, while Shay Knighten and Caleigh Clifton have shared duties at second base and the outfield and Fale Aviu (RF) has started 25 games. In addition, pitchers Jayden Chestnut and Brittany Finney have each made starts and contributed in the circle, while outfielders Kylie Lundberg and Raegan Rogers have seen playing time. Romero leads OU with 27 runs scored and is tied for the team lead with three triples, while Knighten leads the team with six homers and Clifton has a team-best.516 OBP. Offensively, a freshman is among the team s top three leaders in slugging, OBP, runs, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks and stolen bases. Finney has made four starts and has one win this year, posting a 1.58 ERA in 13.1 innings with 13 strikeouts. Chestnut has appeared in 14 games with two starts and owns a 5-0 record. Featuring eight freshman, the 2016 class is the largest ever under Patty Gasso and the largest for the program since nine were on the 1988 squad. For reference, the oldest member of this year s freshmen was born in PARKER TWO-TIME BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK IN 2016 Sophomore Paige Parker has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week twice this season, upping her career total to nine. That ties her with Baylor s Whitney Canion and Texas Christa Williams for fifth most in league history. Her latest honor comes after a dominating weekend where she went 4-0, did not allow a run in 18.0 innings of work and threw the fifth no-hitter of career. She gave up just four hits and struck out 22 against just three walks while throwing two shutouts and combining on another. Opponents hit just.070 against Parker on the weekend. Parker struck out a season-high 11 batters in throwing her no-hitter over BYU, then came back the next day against the Cougars and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a two-hit shutout. She began the weekend with 12.1 no-hit innings. In taking her first honor of the year, she won both starts in complete game efforts at the Troy Cox Classic, giving up one run in 11.0 innings while striking out 15 and walking one. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Parker and Stevens combined for the shutout. SOONER OPEN BIG 12 PLAY WITH BEDLAM WIN A tight Bedlam contest turned into a run-rule win as the Sooners beat Oklahoma State in five innings, With Oklahoma leading 3-2 after four innings, the Sooners hit three home runs in a seven-run fifth to notch their 11th straight win in the series. Shay Knighten hit a two-run homer, Kady Self added a three-run shot later in the inning and Erin Miller hit a walk-off, two-run blast to right field to end it. Oklahoma is also now 16-5 all-time in Big 12 openers. In fact, OU has won five straight such games, outscoring opponents 39-6 during the streak. TWO TOP-25 WINS HIGHLIGHT FULLERTON WEEKEND Oklahoma opened play at the Easton Tournament in Fullerton, Calif., with a 6-1 win over DePaul. Erin Miller and Sydney Romero each had three hits, while the team had 15 total for the third straight game. Kelsey Stevens and Jayden Chestnut combined on a three-hitter. The Sooners held a 3-0 lead through two innings against Cal State Fullerton, but the Titans rallied for six runs in the bottom of the third en route to handing OU its first road loss of the season, 7-5. The Sooners helped Fullerton in the inning by committing two errors and issuing five walks. Batting leadoff for the first time this season, Erin Miller matched a season high for hits by going 3-5 at the plate and drove in a season-best four runs. She doubled, homered and scored twice in OU s 7-1 win over Grand Canyon. The Sooners secured arguably their biggest win of the year when Shay Knighten hit a two-run walk-off home run to beat No. 6 Alabama, 2-0. Paige Parker struck out five with no walks and just two hits allowed as she threw her fourth shutout. OU backed it up with a 4-2 win over No. 23/25 Nebraska. Nicole Pendley drove in three, while Parker pitched 7.0 shutout innings in relief. She struck out six while giving up just two hits. SOONERS FALL IN EXTRAS TO MINNESOTA Playing in its first extra-inning game of the year, Oklahoma lost to No. 22/22 Minnesota in eight innings, 12-10, on March 16. The loss snapped OU s nine-game win streak and marked the team s first defeat at home after a 7-0 start. It was a back-and-forth affair that featured eight lead changes. OU scored in each of the first five innings and out-hit Minnesota, 15-13, but couldn t hold a seventh-inning lead for the first time this year. Lea Wodach went 4-5 with two doubles to set a career high for hits. Sydney Romero and Paige Parker each homered in the loss. OU SCORES PERFECT 5-0 WEEKEND AT HOME A six-run third inning helped Oklahoma open the weekend with a 9-4 win over Saint Louis. Lea Wodach was 3-3 to tie a career high in hits and scored two runs with three RBI and a home run. Kelsey Stevens tied a season high with nine strikeouts. In addition to a no-hitter and season-high 11 strikeouts from Paige Parker, Erin Miller hit a three-run homer and Sydney Romero was 3-4 with a double and triple in an 8-0, five-inning win over BYU. Parker continued her dominant run against BYU the next day as she took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over BYU. Kady Self had an RBI single and Caleigh Clifton hit a two-run double in the sixth. Fale Aviu homered twice as the Sooners put up nine runs over the final two innings to pull away from Maryland, 11-2, in six innings. She hit a two-run homer in the fifth, then added a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth. On her Senior Day, Paris Townsend tied a career high in hits and RBI as she went 2-3 with two runs scored and a walk-off grand slam in an 11-0, six-inning win over Maryland. HOME SLATE OPENS WITH DH SWEEP OF DARTMOUTH A season-high four home runs (all of which were two-run homers), including a pair by Fale Aviu, sparked OU to a 9-0, fiveinning win over Dartmouth in game one of their doubleheader. The Sooners are now 38-8 in home openers, and since Marita Hynes Field opened in 1998, they are OU has won 22 straight home openers. Attendance was 1,208, making it the largest home-opening crowd in Marita Hynes Field history. A five-run second inning paved the way for Oklahoma in its 7-0 win in game two of the doubleheader. Shay Knighten hit another two-run homer, while Brittany Finney, Kelsey Stevens and Paige Parker combined on a two-hit shutout. SOONERS GO 3-2 AGAINST TOUGH FIELD IN PALM SPRINGS OU was victim to a walk-off homer for the second time this year as Oregon State (receiving votes in both polls) beat OU, 6-4, to snap the Sooners seven-game win streak. The loss overshadowed a two-homer, four RBI game by Lea Wodach. Oklahoma bounced back from the loss, though, with a 6-2 win over Utah, which was receiving votes in the USA Softball poll. Sydney Romero and Shay Knighten led the offense as each went 3-4 with a double and run scored. OU battled No. 2 Michigan for five innings, but the Wolverines offense was too much in a 16-9 win. A back-and-forth contest was tied at 7-7 heading to the sixth, but Michigan hit two homers and sent 11 to the plate in a seven-run sixth inning. Knighten had the first multi-homer game of her career. Like they did against Utah, the Sooners regrouped after a loss and handed No. 20 Fresno State its first loss of the year with a 3-2 win. The story was Jayden Chestnut. She earned the first win of her career as she pitched 7.0 innings in relief. She got all 21 outs, struck out a career-high six batters and gave up just one run on three hits and one walk. Oklahoma closed out the weekend with an 11-7 victory over No. 11 UCLA. OU pounded out a season-high 18 hits, one off the record for most ever allowed by the Bruins. Nicole Pendley led the way as she tied a career high with four hits, while for the second straight game Chestnut pitched 7.0 relief innings. MILLER, PARKER NAMED TO TOP 50 WATCH LIST Erin Miller and Paige Parker were each named to the Top 50 Watch List for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award. They are looking to become the second player in OU history to win the award (Keilani Ricketts, 2012 and 2013). The Top 25 Finalists for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 13. An athlete does not have to be on the Watch List to be considered for the Top 25, but the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 11 and the Top 3 announced May 25. The 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 31.

8 2016 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 8 Now in her 22nd season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country as evident by the selection to the 2012 NFCA Hall of Fame class. The Sooners have reached the postseason in each one of her 21 seasons, and in the process, advanced to the Women s College World Series nine times. The WCWS run began in 2000 when her team won the NCAA National Championship in OU s first appearance and continued through the 2013 campaign when the team won its second national championship, becoming just the fifth program to win multiple national titles. With 25 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of (.766) and holds an overall record of (.771) at the University of Oklahoma. Needing only 1,300 games to get there, Gasso became the second fastest to reach 1,000 wins in NCAA Division I history during the 2015 season. She has won more Big 12 games (273-83) than any coach in the league s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 16 different times since the inception of the Big 12 in They have won over 76 percent of their Big 12 contests, and OU has claimed eight Big 12 regular season and four championship titles under her direction. Keilani Ricketts was the two-time USA Softball National Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third player in history to win more than once. Gasso has also directed 50 All-Americans, 110 All-Region honorees and 137 all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, eight Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 10 times, four have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, three as Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and one as Big 12 Newcomer. In 2010, Amber Flores became the first player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, while Shelby Pendley joined her in winning the award twice in 2013 and The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 106 academic all-conference honors.
