Horne originally sided a National Letter of Intent in the fall of 2002 and joined the program at the beginning of the school year. She was stricken with a breathing disorder that kept her from competing. Horne chose to return home to her native Fayetteville, Ga., and seek medical attention while residing with her parents. She enrolled at the University of Georgia in the spring of 2004 before eventually returning to Norman during the summer of 2004 with her breathing ailments diagnosed. Horne has a vocal-cord disfunction and Hashimoto s Thyroiditis, both of which she treats with medication. Before Horne could play for Oklahoma, NCAA clearance was required due to her enrollment in Georgia. We all thought that her career was done because we couldn t fi gure out her breathing ailment, said Gasso. She returned to Norman on her own accord because she really loved our program. She had the courage to come back and ask me for a second chance with the team. She felt like we could make it work. That was a very big step in my eyes. Since that time we have done everything we could do to make it happen. She will have an impact offensively for us. Defensively, she is a little rusty but she ll work her way into the lineup because she has a big stick. OU needs one win to claim a 10 game winning, which would be the 13th under Gasso and 17th in OU history.

Denes was on medication for three months before undergoing successful heart surgery on July 9, Two weeks later she was cleared for full physical activity and is once again be the No. 2 starter on the OU pitching staff. It marks the fi rst time that OU has had three players on the watch list, as well as being the fi rst time a sophomore (Dickson) has garnered the recognition. The watch list is comprised of 40 players that represent 23 colleges and 10 different Conferences. A list of 25 fi nalists will be announced on April 5. A player does not have to be on the watch list to be considered for the top 25. But once the Top 25 is named the remaining fi nalist must be pared down from that list. Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 fi nalists will be named and released on May 10th. The three fi nalists will be announced May 31st. All-American Heather Scaglione was the fi st catcher taken with the No. 4 pick by the 2004 NPF Champion NY/NJ Juggernauts. Lefty hurler Kami Keiter was selected in the second round with the 11th overall selection by the Akron Racers, while fi rst baseman Christina Enea went as the fi rst pick of the third round (13th overall) to the Chicago Bandits. Oklahoma led all programs with three players selected among the 24 draftees. Texas A&M and Cal, who had two draftees each, were the only other program s with multiple selections. Aside from A&M, the only other Big 12 school to have a player drafted was Nebraska (Anne Steffan - 4th round/19th pick). These players have earned this honor and their efforts over three-plus seasons have shined a very positive light on this program, said Gasso, when asked about the signifi cance of leading all programs in draftees. I think it illustrates that this senior class is one of, if not the best in the country. They are a determined group that has major goals before they begin their professional careers. For the fourth consecutive season OU was ranked in the preseason top-10. It also is the second consecutive year OU was ranked No. 4 to begin the year.

By starting against Florida Atlantic (Feb. 4) Freshman Savannah Long became the second consecutive freshman to start the season at shortstop for OU head coach Patty Gasso... In 2004 Norrelle Dickson began at short before moving to third base... Sophomore Jade Prather had an infield single in her first career at bat against FAU... OU tied the single game record with six doubles, which has now happened on seven occasions in school history... Scaglione tied the OU single game record for doubles (3) against FAU and now shares the mark with three others... With five doubles Heather Scaglione is nearly half way to her 2004 total of Scaglione (27) is just three two-baggers shy of the OU career top Jamie Fox set a new career high with four RBI against Sam Houston State thanks in large part to a three-run home run she hit in the first inning... Stacia Aleman set a career-high with four RBI, which all came on her first career home run - a grand slam - against Lipscomb (2/18)... OU freshman Stacy Braddock struck out a career high 10 batters against Oklahoma City Unviersity (2/22). sooners debut at no. 4 again For the second consecutive season the Oklahoma softball team was ranked No. 4 in both the USA Today/ NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball preseason polls. For the Sooners it marked the fi fth consecutive year they have earned a top 10 preseason ranking. It s an honor any time you receive this type of recognition from the nation s coaches, said OU head coach Patty Gasso. Beyond that it doesn t mean anything. We have to earn that ranking and this team is excited about that opportunity. Every season our goal is to get to the Women s College World Series and win a national championship. + OU Head Coach Patty Gasso A pioneer and legend after 10 years. Better believe it. Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso has blazed the trail for the Big 12, which has quickly gained national softball respect in just nine years of existence. No person has been more responsible for the conference rise in prominence than the winningest coach in its history. With five consecutive trips to the Women s College World Series, OU has not only earned respect but validated an entire conference. Her work at OU has done more than just net gains for her employers and league. The Midwest was a dormant recruiting area when she arrived in Presently, the Midwest and South (especially Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Florida) rank a very close second to California. All that without even mentioning her accomplishments. In 2003, Oklahoma was named the fifth best program of all-time by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Go back to 1994, before Gasso arrived in Norman, and it s a guarantee that OU doesn t even sniff the top-25. During her tenure, the Sooners have reached the postseason every year. They have claimed five Regional Championships, made five WCWS appearances and claimed one national championship. Not many coaches around the land can claim those credentials. Then again, if you tally the combined accomplishes of many conferences, and they can t either. So what s next? It would be a mistake to say more of the same. This program has risen dramatically for 10 years and Gasso doesn t intend to slow the pace one bit. Titles like Coaching Legend and Best Coach In Big 12 History are usually reserved for retired leaders. In Gasso s case, there is no need to wait, she has already earned both titles. OU and Arizona are the only programs to be ranked in the NFCA Top-25 every week of its existence. The streak is currently at 130 weeks.

Dickenson added to 2005 recruiting class Oklahoma softball head coach Patty Gasso announced the addition of a fi fth player to the Sooners 2005 recruiting class on Tuesday morning. Traci Dickenson, a shortstop from Placentia, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer for OU and will also compete for the softball team. When you see Traci and the way she carries herself, she looks like an elite athlete, said OU head coach Patty Gasso. Her athletic ability and presence on the fi eld stands out to everyone that watches her. Softball wise, she knows the game, covers a lot of ground defensively and she s a good leader. She is just a tremendous allaround athlete with all the characteristics to be one of the best players at the collegiate level. Dickenson is a two-time All-CIF performer for El Dorado High School, where she is coached by Garrett Yosh. Dickenson, who is currently in the midst of her senior season, has been an all-league performer on three occasions, as well as garnering team Defensive MVP three times and league Defensive MVP twice. Dickenson, along with fellow signees D.J. Mathis, Morgan Hudsonpillar, Janelle Rosa and Jessica Legendre will enroll at OU in the fall of Nice Pace It s early but OU s offense is off to a tremendous start. They are averaging 6.26 runs per game, which over an entire season would rank second all-time for OU. Since 2000, OU s offense has been more profi lic than any time in its history. Below are the averages for the last six seasons: OU Assistant Coach Melyssa Lombardi The same attributes that drew OU head coach Patty Gasso to Melyssa Lombardi as a player are the reasons that she has excelled as the pitching coach on the Oklahoma staff. Lombardi is renowned for her work ethic and softball mind. Watch her give pitching signs to her catchers and you ll quickly learn how complex her mind is. Listen to Lombardi break down opposing hitters on film or observe her meticulously chart her pitching staff and the work ethic will come beaming through. Those attributes are innate. Another one is uncanny... it s the fact that she is a Gasso clone. The head and assistant coach think on the same wave length and fall just short of finishing each other s sentences. It s no wonder that Lombardi has been on staff for seven years and despite being one of the hottest head coaching prospects in the country, she has shown little desire to venture out of Norman. All those traits have translated into one of the nation s best pitching staffs year in and year out. Three pitchers have garnered four All-America honors under her tutelage and the staff has continually ranked among the best in the Big 12 and country. The numbers below illustrate where the pitching staffs ranked in the Big 12 and NCAA, as well as the rank of the top pitcher on the respective staffs over the last five seasons: Team Big 12/NCAA Individual Big 12/NCAA /25 4/ /NR 3/NR /18 1/ /18 4/ /NR 4/46 OU Head Coach Patty Gasso claimed the 500th victory of her Sooner career on Friday, Feb. 18 with a 11-1 win over Lipscomb.

Beyond position changes, the Sooners will reload offensively, defensively and in the pitching circle. The Sooners return the players that accounted for no less than 80 percent of all 2004 statistics. OU Assistant Coach Howard Dobson Howard Dobson has quickly made a name for himself in collegiate softball. The time line of his rise to national recognition is impressive. Dobson began to gain national respect when he arrived at Houston. He was on the first coaching staff for the Cougars in 2000 and helped lead the rookie program to a fifth place finish in Conference USA. Two years later,he had the Cougar offense at the top of Conference USA with league best marks in hits, runs, slugging percentage, RBI and home runs. That squad ranked 12th in the country in batting average and 30th in runs per game. When Dobson took the job at Oklahoma, he had to live up to a serious legacy. The OU softball team had led the conference in hitting for three consecutive years. Dobson s first season saw the Sooners finish second in the batting average race but they topped the conference in runs and slugging percentage while also ranking third in on-base percentage. He also guided former all-conference player Leah Gulla to First Team All-America status. During the 2003 season, she led the Big 12 in three individual offense categories and ranked second in two others. In 2004 OU won the Big 12 team batting title and led the conference in nine offensive categories. Heather Scaglione broke through and was hands down the most dominant hitter in the conference. Her work garnered her First Team All-America honors, thanks to leading the Big 12 in five offensive categories. Yet that wasn t his most impressive work of the year. Dobson was the star of OU s improbable postseason run. Through hours of preparation, he was able to lay out a flawless game plan for the NCAA Regional in Tucson. OU put together the best offensive numbers among the 64 teams in regionals and soundly defeated the top two pitchers (statistically) in the nation - Alicia Hollowell (Arizona) and Brooke Mitchell (Louisiana-Lafayette).
