CT After seven straight weeks on the road, the Nebraska softball team (10-16) hosts its longawaited home opener on Tuesday afternoon, as the Drake Bulldogs (16-13) come to Bowlin Stadium for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. For tickets and game day information visit Huskers.com. HUSKER LEADERS Tristen Edwards leads the Husker offense with a.333 batting average. The junior has a teamhigh 24 hits, nine home runs and 19 runs. She also had driven in a team-best 27 runs and has drawn 16 walks so far this season. Bri Cassidy (.324), Bree Boruff (.317) and Samantha Owen (.302) are also hitting over.300 on the season. Cassidy leads the team with six doubles, while Owen s 12 RBIs rank third on the team. In the circle, Regan Mergele has a team-low 3.62 ERA. She s made 15 appearances and 10 starts, which are both team highs. She also has 41 strikeouts on the season, which ranks second on the team. She also has Nebraska s only two saves so far this season. LAST TIME OUT Nebraska looks to bounce back this weekend after being swept by No. 25 Michigan in its Big Ten opener March Michigan s All- American Pitcher Meghan Beaubien dominated in the circle picking up two wins and a save with a 0.00 ERA over the weekend Alyvia Simmons led the Huskers, going 3-for-8 (.375) through three starts. Samantha Owen also had two hits over the weekend, including a tworun homer, which scored Nebraska s only runs against Michigan. HOME OPENERS Nebraska is 15-2 in home openers since Bowlin Stadium opened in 2002, with the two losses coming to Creighton in 2005 and Wichita State in The Huskers have won 12 of their last 13 home openers. SCOUTING THE DRAKE BULLDOGS Drake enters the mid-week doubleheader with a record overall, which includes a 4-1 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake has won four of its last five games. Most recently, the Bulldogs swept a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday with two road wins over Bradley. The teams were set to play the series finale on Sunday, but the game was canceled. As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting.246. Sarah Maddox leads the team with a.444 average, although she s only played in 12 games. Macy Johnson and Mandi Roemmich lead the starters, with averages of.350 and.340, respectively. Johnson has 28 hits, five doubles and 10 RBIs. Johnson has also scored 17 runs. She also has a team-high 22 walks on the season, with an onbase percentage of.490, which ranks fourth in the conference. Additionally, Johnson has 12 stolen bases on 16 attempts. Roemmich has a team-high 23 runs, 32 hits and six doubles. She also has nine RBIs and 11 walks. Libby Ryan leads the team with 13 stolen bases and 10 sacrifice hits, while Nicole Newman has four of the team s nine home runs this season. Overall, Libby is hitting.268 with 13 runs and 11 RBIs, while Newman is batting.254 with nine runs and 17 hits. A double threat, Newman leads the Bulldogs in the circle. She has a 9-6 record with a 1.56 ERA. Newman has made 21 appearances, including 13 starts. She pitched a team-high 94.0 innings and 11 complete games. She also has three saves and 155 of the team s 234 strikeouts. She s holding opponents to just a.149 batting average. Newman s 155 strikeouts rank second in the country, behind Florida s Kelly Barnhill (156). As a team, Drake is fielding.961 with 27 errors through 29 games. The Bulldogs have given up 16 unearned runs so far this season. NU TRAVELS TO 10 STATES IN 2019 Nebraska will travel to 10 states this season, playing games in California, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin. HUSKERS SET FOR A PAIR OF GAMES AGAINST 2018 WCWS TEAMS Nebraska is slated to play two of the eight teams that advanced to the Women's College World Series last season, Arizona State and UCLA. The Huskers will see both teams at the Mary Nutter Classic. Additionally, Nebraska will play eight more teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2018 when the team takes on BYU, Wichita State, Tulsa, Michigan, Drake, Northwestern, Minnesota and Wisconsin. HOME SWEET HOME Nebraska hosts an 11-game homestand in April and 2019 is the third straight year the Huskers have played at least 10 home games in one month. NU PLAYS NINE GAMES IN 10 DAYS The Huskers' stamina will be tested in 2019 as they are set to play a stretch of nine games in 10 days from April 19 to April 28. INDIANA HOSTS BIG TEN TOURNAMENT The 2019 Big Ten Tournament is set for May 9-11 at Indiana's Andy Mohr Field. The top 12 teams in the final regular-season standings will compete in the tournament, with the top four seeds earning a bye. POSTSEASON FORMAT UNCHANGED The NCAA Tournament will feature a 64-team field for the 17th consecutive season in 2019 and will include a regional-super regional format for the 15th straight year, with super regionals lasting three days. 5 SEASON NOTEBOOK ALL-BIG TEN DUO RETURNS Senior Alyvia Simmons and junior Tristen Edwards return in 2019 as all-big Ten picks. Simmons was named a second-team pick for the second consecutive season in 2018, after also earning the honor in 2017 as a sophomore. Simmons started all but two games for the Huskers in 2018 and hit.346, which ranked second on the team. Edwards was one of nine Big Ten players to earn unanimous first-team honors in She became the first Husker to earn first-team conference honors since All-Americans Kiki Stokes and MJ Knighten in Edwards led the team with a.356 batting average, while starting all 54 games at shortstop, despite never playing the position prior to the beginning of the 2018 season. HUSKERS ADD PACIFIC TRANSFER During the offseason, Nebraska added junior infielder Samantha Owen to its roster. Owen spent two seasons at Pacific before coming to Nebraska. Owen started 96 games for the Tigers over two seasons, appearing in all but four games. She batted.308 with 11 home runs, 53 RBIs and 46 runs in two seasons with the Tigers. She also earned first-team All-WCC honors in 2018 and was an honorable-mention selection in ALL-REGION PICKS HIGHLIGHT ROSTER With addition of Samantha Owen, the Huskers return two All-Region picks in 2019, including Owen and senior Alyvia Simmons. Owen earned third-team All-West Region honors in 2018 at Pacific. Simmons earned thirdteam All-Midwest Region honors in 2018 for the second consecutive year, after also earning third-team recognition in 2017 as a sophomore. BIG BATTERS BACK IN 2019 Nebraska returns its top two offensive leaders from 2018 in junior Tristen Edwards and senior Alyvia Simmons. Edwards led the team in nearly every offensive category last season including batting average (.356), runs scored (41), hits (57), home runs (12), RBIs (43) and slugging percentage (.650). She also ranked second on the team with 11 doubles and 23 walks. Simmons led the team with 12 doubles and four triples, while batting.346 which ranked second on the team in She scored 34 runs, stole a team-high 14 bases, hit two homers and drove in 24 runs. Sophomore Ally Riley also had an impressive 2018 season on offense. She batted.317 (20- for-63), which ranked third on the team among regular hitters and fourth overall. Riley also scored three runs, hit four doubles and had 14 RBIs as a freshman. Right-handed pitcher Olivia Ferrell went 7-for-21 (.333) in 2018 with two doubles and four RBIs. IT S IN THE CLUB Several Huskers have been teammates long before arriving in Lincoln, playing together in high school and on the same club team. California natives Bri Cassidy and Tristen Edwards played for the Corona Angels. In Nebraska, Madi Unzicker, Alyvia Simmons, Rylie Unzicker, Payton Huscroft, Olivia Ferrell, Carson Fischer, Peyton Glatter and Courtney Wallace all played for Nebraska Gold. HUSCROFT READY IN 2019 Payton Huscroft is expected to be compete for playing time this season after an injury forced her to redshirt in her first season at Nebraska. Huscroft never saw the field in 2018 and has four years of eligibility remaining. FERRELL BACK IN THE CIRCLE Olivia Ferrell returns the season as Nebraska s most experienced pitcher. As a freshman last season, Ferrell appeared in 31 games, making 20 starts. She finished with a record of 9-8 and an ERA of 4.35, which ranked second on the team. She pitched three complete games and was part of three shutouts. She pitched innings, gave up 68 earned runs and recorded 53 strikeouts. Last season, Ferrell became the first Husker freshman pitcher to start a season opener against a ranked opponent when she kicked off the season against No. 19 BYU. She ll help lead a pitching staff with just one other returner and three freshmen. LET S HEAR IT FOR THE NEW KIDS The 2019 Nebraska roster consists of eight new faces, including junior Pacific transfer Samantha Owen and freshmen Carson Fischer, Mikaela Forcum, Peyton Glatter, Anni Raley, Karlee Seevers, Courtney Wallace and Lindsey Walljasper. Despite being new, the group brings a lot of previous success that hopes to translate here at Nebraska. Former Husker and USA World Championship Team member Taylor Edwards is Nebraska s volunteer coach. She joins former Wichita State pitcher Katie Malone as a graduate manager. NEBRASKA NICE The 2019 Husker roster includes nine native Nebraskans, which is the most in Rhonda Revelle s 27 seasons as Nebraska s head coach. Previously, Nebraska had never had more than eight Nebraskans on its roster under Revelle. The group consists of senior Madi Unzicker, sophomores Olivia Ferrell, Rylie Unzicker and Sarah Yocom and freshmen Payton Huscroft, Carson Fischer, Peyton Glatter, Karlee Seevers and Courtney Wallace. RECORD SETTERS In the season opener against Lamar at the Lone Star College Classic in Houston, Texas, Nebraska dominated the Cardinals, In that game, senior catcher Bri Cassidy had three doubles which tied a Nebraska single-game record. Additionally, freshman right-handed pitcher/designated player Courtney Wallace hit a pair of triples, which also tied a Nebraska single-game record. Lindsey Walljasper started in the circle in the season opener, becoming just the third freshman to start a season opener since In that game, Walljasper pitched a complete five-inning game. She gave up no earned runs, seven hits and recorded eight strikeouts, while not giving up a single walk. The next weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Nebraska s final game against Pitt, Tristen Edwards went 4-for-4 with four hits, four runs and eight RBIs. The eight RBIs tied a Nebraska single-game record (seven innings or less), while her four hits tied for fourth and her four runs tied for second. Edwards also had two home runs in the first game against NC State. B1G TIME HONORS On Feb. 18, Tristen Edwards and Lindsey Walljasper earned Big Ten weekly honors after impressive outings at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Edwards was named Player of the Week for the third time in her career, while Walljasper became Nebraska s first Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Laura Barrow in NATIONAL ATTENTION Tristen Edwards was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week (Feb. 19) and the College Sports Madness National Field Player of the Week (Feb. 18) after her outing at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Omaha, Neb., native has made 18 starts and has played in all but three games for Nebraska. Wallace has made starts at four different positions this season, including pitcher (four starts), third base (five starts), designated player (seven starts) and left field (two starts). Wallace is one of two players to make starts at more than two positions this season and the only one to make starts at four different positions. OWEN HELPING HUSKER OFFENSE During the opening weekend, junior Pacific transfer Samantha Owen made one plate played in to games and went 0-for-1 at the plate. However, after some successful plate appearances the following weekend, she s found a starting spot in the Husker lineup. Since the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Owen has played in all games. Her batting average has improved to.302, which ranks fourth on the team. Owen ranks second in the conference with an on-base percentage of.449. Most recently, Owen went 2-for-6 with one run and a homer against No. 25 Michigan last weekend. MADI UNZICKER IS GETTING ON BASE From Feb. 8 to March 16, senior infielder Madi Unzicker reached base for 19 straight which was the longest by a Husker since All-Amercian MJ Knighten got on base 21 straight times in One reason Unzicker has been so successful is because isn t afraid to use her body to get on base...literally. The Omaha, Neb., native has been hit five times this season which ranks fifth in the conference. The five this season bring her career total to 18. She is just one away from moving into the top 10 on Nebraska s all-time hit by pitch list. CAREER HIT BY PITCHES 1. However, Simmons has bounced back quickly and is performing quite well since getting back in the starting lineup. Simmons started the first 10 games, but was unable to start the following eight games. However, she s been back in the starting lineup for the last eight games and is hitting.333 in that stretch, an improvement from her.275 season average. 9 OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT DRAKE (16-13, 4-1 MISSOURI VALLEY) Drake enters the mid-week doubleheader with a record overall, which includes a 4-1 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake has won four of its last five games. Most recently, the Bulldogs swept a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday with two road wins over Bradley. The teams were set to play the series finale on Sunday, but the game was canceled. As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting.246. Sarah Maddox leads the team with a.444 average, although she s only played in 12 games. Macy Johnson and Mandi Roemmich lead the starters, with averages of.350 and.340, respectively. Johnson has 28 hits, five doubles and 10 RBIs. Johnson has also scored 17 runs. She also has a team-high 22 walks on the season, with an on-base percentage of.490, which ranks fourth in the conference. Additionally, Johnson has 12 stolen bases on 16 attempts. Roemmich has a team-high 23 runs, 32 hits and six doubles. She also has nine RBIs and 11 walks. Libby Ryan leads the team with 12 stolen bases and 10 sacrifice hits, while Nicole Newman has four of the team s nine home runs this season. Overall, Libby is hitting.268 with 13 runs and 11 RBIs, while Newman is batting.254 with nine runs and 17 hits. A double threat, Newman leads the Bulldogs in the circle. She has a 9-6 record with a 1.56 ERA. Newman has made 21 appearances, including 13 starts. She pitched a team-high 94.0 innings and 11 complete games. She also has three saves and 155 of the team s 234 strikeouts. She s holding opponents to just a.149 batting average. Newman s 155 strikeouts rank second in the country, behind Florida s Kelly Barnhill (156). As a team, Drake is fielding.961 with 27 errors through 29 games. The Bulldogs have given up 16 unearned runs so far this season. One of only 14 active Division I coaches enshrined in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame, Revelle has helped her student-athletes succeed athletically and academically. On the field, she has taken 20 teams to the NCAA Tournament, a total that ranks fifth nationally among active coaches. In the classroom, Revelle has coached 14 players to academic All-America honors in 26 seasons, the second-highest total of any coach nationally during that span. Revelle has also given back to the profession, as she served as NFCA President for three separate terms.
