1 September, 2010 From the President: President s Letter You could say it has been a HOT summer. Not just HOT, but HUMID too. If you didn t start out early in the day to get your ride in and keep it short, you risked the chance of over-heating and finding it difficult to even finish the ride. Even at that, we caught a really lucky break for the Amishland weekend where the heat mellowed to a cool low 80 during the day and the humidity didn t leave you feeling like you were in a sauna. Was it the heat and humidity of the summer that kept the riders away? We had a fairly good turn-out, but it was about 200 below the 2009 attendance. It has to be called a successful ride. There were very few accidents which led to some scrapes and one foot sprain when the rider s seat post broke, but other than that, there were no major problems. This was the first year that the club has used only our own sag drivers to police the routes. John McNarney set up the routes for the drivers to cover and did an excellent job. The drivers kept to their routes and were constantly on the move. Mike and I passed them many times while we traveled from sag to sag. I want to thank John and all of the drivers for giving all the riders a visual presence on the road of the club and to let them know we were there if we were needed to help. As we traveled the route from sag to sag and pitched in where we could, it was amazing to see the team efforts put in by all the volunteers to put on a really good ride. We had several new volunteers at some of the sags that were eager to do whatever was needed to set up and with a few pointers, did a won- Continued on page 4 Don Barfell Ernest Bird Michiana Bicycle Association 2nd Annual Bike Michiana For Hospice Sunday September 12, 2010 The Hospice Foundation and the Bike Michiana Coalition are putting a cycling tour on Sunday, September 12th. 4 From the President (continued from page 1): derful job. My hats off to the new team setting up on Saturday at the Watermelon Stop for doing such a great job of presenting the food. After just a few pointers, they were off. It looked really good and we received many compliments from the riders. The veteran team at LaGrange did an awesome job as usual. You just will not find any other ride that puts it on better than this club does. Even though we deserve the pats on the back for a job well done, we know there is always room for improvement and we will be forming the team for 2011 right away. We would appreciate all comments and ideas to make an even a better ride next year so let s hear them. We also need to thank the Social Committee again for putting on the Poker Ride. After a slight mix up on the first stop, we were off to get our cards and hope for the winning hand. They also used some cookies and fruit from Amishland and added some much appreciated cold drinks for after the hot ride. Dick Kuehl had the high hand and Dean Kanalos won with the low hand. I think we could say that we all had fun bringing back an old event. Riding season is beginning to wind down, but hopefully that only means that we can put the heat and humidity of the summer behind and enjoy some cool comfortable riding this fall. Here s to many more great days of riding and remember to ride safe. Gail Weaver President HOT LINE DISCONNECTED!!! With an annual cost of about $800, and with so many other ways to get ride information (website, weekly s, and the newsletter), it was hard to justify the expense. Anyone needing ride information, or wishing to leave feedback, is invited to contact any club officer or board member. Contact information is always listed on Page 2 of the MBA News. Bicycle Safety Training at Center for the Homeless Under the leadership of Bike Michiana Coalition President Judy Lee, BMC and MBA members conducted a bike safety training session at the Center for the Homeless on Monday, August 16th. The training was focused on the young children present, who were fitted with new helmets provided by BMC/MBA. John Boughton provided first-hand knowledge of bicycle commuting to the workplace. He impressed all present when he related that he had biked every day for the last 43 months! Also representing the MBA were members Peter Janks, and Ellen & Ray Halicki The event concluded with the raffling off of three bikes donated by The Avenue Bike Station. MBA WINDOW DECALS Show your support for cycling and for the MBA by sporting one of our new window decals on your car or truck. The decals are available in two sizes: 3 x 4, and 4 x 6. Either size can be purchased for a dollar from club board members. By an overwhelming vote of the Board of Directors, the MBA has decided that it was time to make a break from the past and do away with the hot line and answering machine, effective September 30, Our thanks to Howard Langdon, MBA s voice on the machine, and to The House of Bicycles for providing a place for the answering machine for all these years. 4
