1 August, 2010 From the President: Michiana Bicycle Association As I m writing this, I m thinking that this is only the middle of July, but this article is going into the August newsletter. Can you believe how fast the summer is speeding by? I m sure it is a busy time for everyone. The faces change at every club ride as there are so many activities to choose from. We are so fortunate to have a club with so many great members to provide so many opportunities to spend time with good friends while exercising our bodies and having great fun. My first thoughts are to thank the Couch s, Halicki s, and McNarney s for putting on such a wonderful cookout at the Summer Solstice Ride at Madeline Bertrand Park in June. The night started with a good challenging ride through the hills of Niles and then back to the park for some great grilled food provided by our own chefs, Ray Halicki and Richard Couch. Thanks to all of you that also brought some wonderful side dishes and desserts to make it a veritable Join us this month for a return of an old favorite The Poker Ride. Ride the route, pick up cards at various locations, and see what Lady Luck has in store for you. After the ride enjoy snacks and drinks while the winners are announced. Great prizes! Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 6 p.m. Swanson School, ride options of: 17, 22, 25, 29 miles. Ellen Halicki, Social Committee Chairman Continued on page 4 The Chefs at work! 4 From the President (continued from page 1): feast. We were able to get everything cleared away just in time to jump into our vehicles to race the storm and get home safely. From the wonderful comments and thanks that were received, we will definitely do another cookout. Amishland is always the hot topic at this time of the year as it is less than a month away. We are still in need of some volunteers, so please call Bonnie Yoder right away to get on the schedule. If you cannot be there on that weekend to help, let me know as there are many things to get done before the ride and all help would be greatly appreciated. When we have meetings for the club business, I always like to pass along what was discussed and keep you informed. Unfortunately, the meeting is July 15 th and I would be in hot water if I didn t get my monthly article in by the 10 th so Ray can get your newsletter to you in a timely manner. In order to get it to you without waiting for the next newsletter, I will give Ray a snapshot of the meeting to put in the following weekly ride . Please check out my new feature in the newsletter, Member Spotlight, this month. I wanted to start this off in May, but just didn t get it kicked off until now. If you know of a member that you think other members of the club would enjoy meeting and learning about, please let me know. Quite often we know each other s bicycles better than we know the riders. Let me know what you think. Unfortunately I have to advise you of an accident involving a member during the Wednesday, July 7 th ride. Mike McGuigan had an incident with a dog and broke his collar bone. Be sure to send Mike your best when you can. This should remind us that not all dogs are contained by their owners and we need to be careful when riding, but even then, not all mishaps are preventable when dogs are involved. Please be careful and be safe out there while enjoying your rides. Volunteers Needed Amishland and Lakes August 6,7 & 8 Contact Bonnie Yoder if you can help with any of these positions. 5 Member Spotlight Meet Jeff Winegardner. He has been a member of the MBA for 3 years. After 33 years of smoking, Jeff quit and joined the club to help him keep it that way. Some of you might remember him from last summer when he attempted to ride his bike with one leg because the crank arm kept falling off the other side. He started the first season with a mountain bike and traded up to a road bike last year. Now we rarely see him on the road as he is just another one of those blurs that yells out hi as they are zooming by. From the Archives The following article was taken from the MBA News of April TALK TO YOUR CONGRESSMAN ABOUT BICYCLING Congressman John Brademas, representing Indiana s Third District, will be available to his constituents at public meetings. According to his office, the next such meeting should be in April, with the time, date and place to be announced in the area news media. At these meetings, Congressman Brademas offers to discuss any subject of concern to people of the Third District. This is an excellent opportunity for cyclists to bring to his attention our desires for good federal laws and programs favoring bicycling. Several members of the MBA plan to attend the next meeting. Let your Congressman know that you are concerned about bicycling issues. Come to the meeting. And from the Winter issue: Jeff Winegardner Jeff and his wife Connie also join the leisure ride on Monday night. When he isn t riding with the club or working, Jeff likes to spend his time watching Nascar, doing yard work or just walking the dog. His favorite club ride is doing the Dowagiac ride in the fall when you can roll along and smell the grapes hanging on the vine. He is currently working on the Bike Elkhart board to turn Elkhart into a more bike friendly community. When you see Jeff at the rides, walk up and introduce yourself if you don t already know him. We are very glad to have Jeff as a valuable member of the club. Just another crazy biker! Gail MOONS OVER CASS COUNTY After becoming separated from a larger group of bicyclists, Earl Huxhold was enjoying the quiet solitude of the red and yellow fall countryside. He soon noticed an approaching car in his hat mounted rear view mirror. Earl did a double take and then turned his head. A car containing three attractive girls, one with a bare fanny hanging out the window, drove by. A few miles down the road, Earl overtook the car, now parked in a driveway. He waved to the three young women. A half-hour later, Earl was once again lost in his communion with nature when the approach of a car distracted him. Could this be déjà vu? Definitely not, a different fanny was hanging out the window this time! 5

6 Thank you to Bicycle safety volunteers As we bask in the success of a very busy BIKE MONTH it is the perfect time to thank yet another group of committed volunteers, namely the cyclists from MBA and BMC who gave their time to assist in bike safety classes for third graders in Michiana elementary schools. Third grade is the target grade because this is the developmental age when children begin to ride their bike independently. Teaching them bike safety, including hand signals, being predictable, and being visible, along with basic bike check provides them with a lifelong safety habit. This habit will aim to prevent bicycle accidents in the future and promote fun and safe riding. The most important habit to stress is wearing an approved helmet every time they ride their bike. At the end of a brief instruction each student is fit with their own helmet with the repeated message to wear the helmet every time they ride their bike. Approved helmets are obtained through several generous funding sources. They include Michiana Bicycle Association, Bike Michiana Coalition and a grant funded through Memorial Hospital s Community Health Initiative. For this generosity we are grateful. Without it we could not provide this program which remains the mission of MBA and BMC. We were able to purchase 500 helmets at a discount rate through Outpost Sports and have fit approximately 300 students. We have a small amount of helmets for about two more classes. Volunteers are a huge element in providing this important program. We want to send out a message of gratitude to the following volunteers:vawn and Rod Recla, Bonnie Yoder, Vicki Walters, Jo Broden, Mike McFarland, Pete Jank, Steve Miller, Joyce McNarney, Ellen and Ray Halicki, Steve Guthrie, Jennifer, Bert Spencer. As we continue to promote cycling events in the Michiana area we want to remind all that any proceeds realized continue to support safety programs which include school safety programs. In conclusion we want to give a big thank you to the Louise Addicott and Georgina Foundation for their generous support of Bike The Bend. Families and cyclists of all ages and skills reported a wonderful time biking through the motor vehicle restricted streets of South Bend and Mishawaka, and enjoy each other. The registration fee covered approximately 20% of the expenses and the foundation covered the remaining 80%. Though there was little profit the plan is to continue the ride as an annual event. With enormous appreciation, Judy and Bill Lee, BMC, MBA This spring we provided safety classes to Good Shepherd Montessori school, McKinley Primary Center, Madison Primary Center, and St. Pius Elementary school. We plan to provide a class to the Center for the Homeless sometime this summer. At this time we are scheduling classes in the fall, all dependent on availability of funds. 6
