1 September, 2011 From the President: Greetings Fellow Riders: It was a super busy month getting ready for our Amishland and Lakes Ride from Howe School, but it was a great ride. The weather was beautiful until the last couple of hours on Sunday when a fast-moving storm dumped on the riders. Our SAG drivers did a wonderful job making sure the riders knew the weather was coming and picking up others that didn t want to finish in the downpour. You guys rock! We even went to the rescue of about 12 riders with one of the trucks. When they got to Howe, they sang out their thanks for bringing in the weenie bunch. Even being soaked didn t dampen the spirits. Many thanks to every single person that put in some time to make sure that all of our riders enjoyed a wonderful weekend. Your hours of volunteer time are what has made us so successful for 38 years on this ride. THANK YOU! Wednesday, August 10 th, we held our annual poker ride from Swanson. We awarded prizes for the three top hands and the worst hand (so no one felt left out). Some leftover food from Amishland was provided by the Halicki, Couch and McNarney event support group. Unfortunately, we had a bad accident near the end and one of our riders had to be taken to the hospital. In these evenings with bright sun, we have to keep in mind that it is sometimes difficult to see the road surface when you go from the sun to shade and should proceed with care. Such was the case as Tim Reddington Michiana Bicycle Association PIZZA RIDE Since we are nearing the end of the cycling season (for fair weather cyclists anyway), The Social Committee has decided to squeeze in one last social event for the year. Come and ride with us on Wednesday, September 28th at Northpoint School in Granger. After the ride, MBA members are invited to saunter over to Mancino s on St. Rte. 23 in Granger for pizza and soft drinks, on the MBA! So we know how many to expect, give me a call at , or at raynellen@att.net if you are planning to attend. If it rains, the party is still on, we will just eat sooner. 4 From the President (continued from page 1): our rider hit two chuck-holes in the road and flew over the handlebars. We wish him a speedy recovery and take it as a reminder to the rest of us to be careful on our sometimes less than perfect roads. Don t forget we have the last Wednesday ride pizza party and volunteer parties coming up in the next couple of months. Hopefully our riding time does not end then and we will be able to ride into the fall. Welcome to some more new riders that have joined us in the last couple of weeks. It has been a really great year for new faces. We are glad you have joined us. Enjoy your rides and please be careful out there. Your President, Gail Weaver ROVING SAGS KEPT BUSY AT AMISHLAND If you spent any time out on the roads at Amishland & Lakes you could not help but notice the roving sags with their bright green and black SAG signs. Organized by their captain, John McNarney, they were out there Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday to offer help, if needed. And they were needed. They helped fix many flat tires, and when a tire could not be fixed, they provided transportation for the bike and rider back to Howe. Another rider had a broken chain, and also needed transport. Phyllis Kaminski submitted this view of the Amishland & Lakes tour: Furrows and Flowers We know the Amish for their abundant tables, and lush gardens. But we also know that the apparent simplicity of life we see is supported by caring family networks, an ethic of hard work, and hospitality. As Amishlands and Lakes comes to close and we enjoy photos and memories, let s not forget a most important part of the Amishlands story. Cyclists from other areas commented on the well-marked roads, the delicious local fruits, cookies, and ice cream. One group in particular noted all the work that goes into organizing such an event. They saw the 37 th annual volunteers at tables and in the SAG cars, but we know the long and careful, often invisible labor that is like that of Amish farmers. Seeds are gathered, furrows are plowed, and all is nurtured for months so that the harvest can happen. We are grateful to all our volunteers, whether they did fruit, or flowers, or provided support of any kind. We are especially grateful for the long, hard, invisible labor of those who dug the furrows that the 37 th annual Amishland and Lakes such a success. Danke! Thank you each and all! Phyllis A dedicated cell phone at the base at Howe, with a dedicated person to take the message, made sure that help was dispatched quickly. Help was definitely needed Sunday afternoon when the storm hit. Some of my grandkids were among the many that got emergency relief from the torrential rains. Thanks to all on the Roving Sag Team, Ray Halicki One of our SAG drivers in action. 4
