3 Minnesota High School Cycling League Formed under NICA teams, 250 riders teams, 350 riders teams, 500+ riders teams, 700+ riders teams, riders teams, riders MN League basically a franchise of National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) - similar web sites, standards, rules, fees, etc. Minnesota High School Cycling League the intention is students will start with mountain biking but expand to road, cycle cross, commuting, adventure, etc. Strong MINDS, BODY and CHARACTER through Cycling 3

4 DCT Open to all Duluth area riders Grades 7-12 Girls and Boys Racers/non-racers Beginner to Expert levels DCT is Cross Country MTB Riding Official 709 Activity Athletes may receive Activity Letter based on criteria Other schools as numbers increase Multi sports concerns/options (can participate in a varsity sport) Risks and Precautions Insured and covered under NICA 4

5 Equipment Needs A working, well maintained Mountain Bike Loaners bikes are available Helmet (mandatory) Appropriate clothing (riding shorts, jersey) Tool kit with at least spare tube, pump, tire levers Water bottle/hydration pack Gloves Eye protection (strongly recommended) Cold weather (jackets, tights, leg/arm warmers, hat) Shoes/cleats (strongly recommended) 5

6 DCT Practice Schedule Pre-season Training (April July) OPTIONS organized training program such as Duluth DEVO, team is permitted a limited number of official events prior to July 1. 9 Quick Look at Costs Student Athletes: $100 DCT Registration/Activity fee $50 to join the NICA/MN League (provides insurance) $40 per race (scholarships are available) NOTE DCT is all inclusive and will work with those who are in need of assistance to participate. Team Kits: Jerseys - $80 Shorts - $115 optional Jackets $135 optional Team Kits will be available on Podiumwear s web base storefront. Race expenses over night stay, lodging and food 9

11 Typical Race Weekend Snapshot Saturday Drive to race venue Pre-ride 1pm 4pm Team Dinner Sunday: Pre-ride from 7:30 8:15 am Middle School 8:30 am Boys Fresh / JV2 10:00 Girls 12:00 Boys JV3/Varsity 2pm 4:00, volunteers/crowd/teams to assist with teardown, which takes about an hour (also allows our Timing and Scoring folks to get everything double checked). Awards presentation about 5 pm 2018 format not set 11

12 Race Format Courses are between 3 4 mile loops, mostly single track with passing zones Climbing 400/600 ft. per lap Courses routed to provide visibility for coaches and parents 12

Race lengths (new Ability Based Racing format): Middle School (7 th or 8 th grade) one lap (20 40 minutes) Freshmen two laps (40-60 minutes) JV 2 two laps (40 60 minutes) JV 3 three laps (60 90 minutes) Varsity 4 laps (under 90 minutes) Racers register depending on school class New racers in 10, 11, and 12 th grade start at JV-2) Most Duluth middle school riders choose to petition up to Freshman Racers may petition up based on skill/experience Opening races flatter, with fewer technical challenges Season Championship race lots of climbing and technical elements 13

15 DCT Team Structure / Volunteering DCT Board of Directors Head Coaches (Level 3) NICA coaching license Level 2 Coach Additional training, helps head coaches with advanced tasks such as leading rides. Level 1 Coach Volunteers to help with rides at practices Travel logistics volunteer for season or single events to coordinate ride sharing, lodging Volunteer Coordinator - Fund Raising Coordinator - 15

16 DCT Race Day Volunteering Pit Zone set up (6:30 am) and tear down after Varsity Boys Race (4:00 pm). Help with getting Pit Zone gear to and from race venue about a pick up load. General race day volunteers for league Duluth Race Course help get trail ready for race day Food Coordinator Coordinate race day team food Volunteer Coordinator help organize and recruit volunteers for race days & other needs. 16

17 TeamSnap Application Registration with DCT via TeamSnap. Online registration, Code of Conducts, DCT fee payments Online tool team uses for communication and organizing. Important to include parent contact information as well as rider information so parents get mails and text messages regarding practices, etc. 17
