Appendix/Extra Info
Ability-Based Racing The major changes include: Eliminated 2-lap increases in race distances for riders when they are upgraded Bring race times in-line with current coaching standards (all races under 90 minutes) Keep middle school racing focused on physical literacy, not performance Provide Junior and Senior athletes new to racing an appropriate racing category Eliminate division racing for individual scoring (still applies to team) A key change is the creation of the JV2 category. This is now the starting point for all student-athletes in grade. Students will only be moved out of JV2 once they have reached a high performance level or petition. There are no longer 2-lap increases for student-athletes that reach an upgrade. Also worth noting, middle school athletes are not subject to the mandatory upgrades previously applied. Conversion to Ability Based Racing 7th, 8th and freshman will be placed by grade per the new rules Sophomores, and the bottom half of JV (2016) will be placed in JV2 The top half of JV (2016) will be placed in JV3 Varsity (2016) will remain in varsity 38
Athlete Information & Expectations Practices Each practice has a specific purpose and there is a progression throughout the season. The main goals are to develop the athletes endurance, strength, technique and knowledge of the sport. Student athletes are expected to attend each practice and be prepared with the proper equipment (including any medication/inhalers that might be needed) and complete the entire workout. If a student athlete is going to be late or miss a practice they are expected to notify the coaches ahead of time (and note absence in Team Snap) Practices 3x/week (2x during the week and one weekend day) Athletes must Sign-in/Sign-out at each practice. Athletes must practice with the group they are assigned to unless they discuss and get approval from a coach Athletes should ride with a buddy of similar skill/speed do not abandon your buddy during a practice. You re performance in the races will be directly tied to what and how you practice 4
Athlete Information & Expectations Policies Follow Team Rules. Consequences for failure to do so. Helmets must be worn at ALL TIMES when on the bike Stay with your group / team - communicate with your ride leader/coach Sign in / out of EVERY Practice Be respectful of your team mates, coaches, volunteers and others on the trail Race Venue league rules should be followed by EVERYONE (helmets, wheels on the ground in pitzone, staying off the course, etc) Issues should be addressed with your practice category coach first communicate and discuss any issues or concerns We will follow Prior Lake Athletic Dept. policies and athlete code of conduct for grades, drug/alcohol use, etc. Safety * Sportsmanship * Respect * Effort 4
GRIT Theme for 2018 Grit = The Quality that makes us commit to long term goals and see them through despite challenges. It s the stick-to-it-ness that helps us keep going even when its hard. Grit is even more important than intelligence or talent when it comes to succeeding in life and school (and sports). Grit = Resilience + Perseverance Resilience the ability to bounce back after a tough situation and then get back to feeling just as good as you felt before. Ability to adapt to difficult circumstances that you can t change, and keep on thriving. Perseverance = Continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failures or opposition. When the going gets tough, the tough get going
