Carpark runners arrive with buses about 6.50am. Dip feet in the sea and then the first runner sets off through St. Bees, then to Netherton and Beckermet, turn right onto A595. NB: Starting route narrow lanes. Spectators need to get ahead of runners (don t convoy).

Turn off A595 left to Gosforth. Look for right turn to Eskdale. Looking for left turn to Boot. (Oposite King George Inn)

Having turned left to Boot head for Beckfoot Train Station. Meet here with support vehicles to tackle Hardnott. Both busses turn back to skirt around Hardnott and Rhinose passes. Designated support vehicle goes with runners (usually 4) to go over Hardnott, Rhinose need to be at station ahead of runners (9am is a safe time to be there for support vehicle). Lovely café but opening times vary.

Tough challenge for runners over the two passes. Support vehicle(s) assist. Two support buses on way to pick up runners after Rhinose (Skelwith Bridge). Both mini buses to wait here to make contact with runners as they emerge following the passes.

Mini bus meets up with runners at café (Skelwith Bridge). Support bike stays with runner followed by bus which will have to stop regularly to allow traffic through. NB: Great place to support runners by leap frogging ahead. Bike essential here as main support bus has to leapfrog to park up at regular intervals to allow traffic through.

Through Ambleside. Mini bus needs to keep leapfrogging because of traffic. A591. Bike support important. Nice views of Lake Windermere (weather dependent).

Past Staveley on 591 (busy road bike protects runner). Turn left at Plantation Bridge to Bowston. Detailed directions available at the end of this booklet. Left at the postbox (inset into the wall) and right to Skelsmergh. Road bends right can be missed if not careful.

Turn right at A6 then left to Meal Bank. Then onto Patton and Patton Bridge. NB: A585 comes out of Kendal and goes past Grayrigg towards Tebay.

Through Patton Bridge. Turn right at junction to Grayrigg. Left onto A685 on way to Tebay (cross M6).

Follow A685 to Tebay. Nice pubs here for food and drink for supporters.

Right at Tebay A685. Tebay services not far away if supplies are needed (e.g. Water).

Nice and flat for runners (following signs to Kirkby Stephen).

Follow to Kirkby Stephen. Turn right to Nateby (B6259). Look for left turn to Nateby after a short run signposted Nateby.

Up and down section. Mini bus needs to drive on, to get up the Nateby Hill in low gear. Good view at the top and encourage the lucky runner tackling the hill! Need support here as it is a steep one.

If weather is good lovely meandering scenery for runners, bike and spectators.

Keld, Thwaite, Muker and Gunnerside. Good for runners and spectators.

Good running towards Reeth.

Reeth is roughly half way. Potential toilet stop for runners. Nice place to view for parents and opportunity for food. Runners follow signs for Richmond.

Follow signs to Richmond. Starting to lose light around now.

Through Richmond road sweeps left and uphill. Traffic lights then look for a right turn to Brompton - on - Swale (B6271) (Important not to miss this). Richmond is a busy market town. Usually around now for designated night support by parent vehicle to join in.

Under A1 over main road (traffic lights and busy road) towards Scorton. At garage turn right to Bolton-on-Swale. NB: around now, support mini bus acts as sleeping bus for runners.

Look for left turn to Whitwell (signpost easy to miss). Back to narrow lanes. Brilliant if stars are out.

Whitwell to Streetlam. Watch for junction left and immediate right (to Danby Wiske). Signs for Danby Wiske. Communication between the two busses is vital. Sleep bus goes ahead and parks up. When mini bus passes, knock knock on sleep bus to ensure drivers know!

After Danby Wiske look for left turn signposted Brompton. Turn left onto A167 then right after short distance to Brompton.

Through Brompton turn left onto A585 towards Osmotherley. Start of a real slog for night runners.

Follow signs for Osmotherley (uphill) (right fork). Tough running and cycling.

Through moors. Towards Swainby (take the right hand fork). Turn right onto A172.

Along A172 look for right hand turn to Great Busby, then turn immediate left (Little Busby).

Follow signs to Kildale. Pass through Great Broughton, Ingleby Greenhow on way.

Kildale to Commondale. Pick up signs for Castleton.

Usually starting to get light around now. Road at top (signposted Whitby left we turn right to Castleton).

Looking for right turn at top of road to Castleton. Good place for support bus to park up acts as a signpost for Castleton.

Left into high street, then looking for right hand turn (Ainthorpe Lane). Looking for right turn (Easton Lane). (As a signal for this turn look for Brook Lane on the right which is the road before) Carry on and bear right onto Easton Lane.

Look for left by bridge. Easton lane becomes Lawns Road. Going to Houlsyke then Lealholm.

Road sweeps right through Lealholm. Road goes up hill. Look for left to Glaisdale (Low Woods Lane).

Through Glaisdale (Carr Lane). Onto Limber Hill which becomes Egton Lane. Going towards Egton. At junction turn right and then first left to Grosmont. In the past the minibus has gone through Egton or Egton Bridge (both lead to Grosmont).

Going to Grosmont via Barnard s road (station) Big hill coming. Goes onto Eskdaleside.

At junction with A169 turn left and immediate right to Iburndale. You should be in a place called Sleights.

At junction turn left and then left again onto B1416 then after a short distance turn right to Sneatonthorpe, then left at junction to the main road, left for about 200yds, then right. Signs for Robin Hoods Bay start. Parents can ring staff to see where we are on journey if early morning support is on offer.

Keep following signs for Robin Hoods Bay (B1447). Last bit very steep downhill. Runners run as a team carefully down the hill to dip toes in the sea. Parents hopefully ready to greet them.

Detailed directions for page 7 map A591 left (Plantation Bridge) to Bowston (Winter Lane). In Bowston look for left turn (Post box on wall) off Winter Lane over the bridge. Go to the junction and turn right follow the road and head to Skelsmergh (road eventually sweeps right and take the left fork). This takes you to A6 take a right and then fork left (Helme Lane) after a short while to Meal Bank then onto Patton Bridge. Just through Patton Bridge take middle fork. Further on the road forks again stay right and carry on to junction and turn right to Grayrigg where you meet the A595 and you turn left towards Tebay.
