1 Volume 40, #5 May, 2008 President s Message With this letter I begin a new mission in life Retirement. Every retiree I talk to says to stay busy that should not be a problem. I want to thank John Mabry for his tech talk on shocks and Karlene Greenleaf for her talk on bookmarkers, at the April meeting. The spring safety check was a Hugh success. The cooks Ed Jankowski and Lee Hendrix did a great job, also Bob McKinney brought some of the best sausages and ham I have ever tasted. It was a little chilly in the morning, but warmed up nicely in the afternoon. All cars passed inspection with flying colors. Don t forget the Ford show we need workers. The monthly eat out will be at Fernando s in Blair, May 15 th at 7:00pm. Lloyd to Delmar Bunch, Lee Hendrix, Don Graves, Karen & Don Noodell for participating in the spring club litter pickup. The weather was great but no great finds to report. According to a new poll, 81 per cent of Americans think the country is on the wrong track. The other 19 per cent own gas stations. 1

5 COURTESY RULES (Originally drafted for the Natural State A Region by Jack Woods in 1989) (Edited by Trish Love, 1989) (Revised by Dick Knapp, 1994) PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of establishing a set of courtesy rules is to eliminate potential conflict by laying out guidelines within which to conduct our activity. Our objective is to prevent accidental damage by people other than the owner. As with all personal property, whether its value is apparent or not, it is essential to recognize the importance of treating each other s cars with the utmost respect. Regardless of an individual s knowledge of cars and subsequent ability to avoid potential damage, and regardless of their level of friendship with an individual, a hands off policy MUST be upheld by all club members. Moreover, it is essential that we understand that we are representing the club when around other individuals with antique and classic cars. Again, we must maintain an absolute hands off policy as not only a courtesy to the owner, but as a representative of our club. We want to put our best foot forward and strive always to be considerate and polite. This courtesy also extends to driving habits and public conduct as well. We don t want to make enemies at home or on the road. Finally, our activities often involve children or guests. To avoid embarrassment to you and them, it is important to make them aware of our courtesy rules. Children especially need special attention to keep them from touching and climbing on the cars. THESE RULES ARE REQUIRED READING FOR ALL CURRENT AND NEW MEMBERS. COMPLIANCE IS EXPECTED. 1. A hands off policy will exist for all cars regardless of value. This includes, among other things: a. No sitting or standing on running boards, fenders, trunk rack or other parts of a car. b. Do not touch or rub any part of the car finish or lay arms on the window trim without permission. Oil from hands and road dust can damage and scratch paint and chrome. c. Do not lean on or slide down or against cars. Belt buckles, zippers, watches, blue jean brads, purses and clothing will cause scratches. d. Do not open doors without permission of owner. e. Absolutely DO NOT open hoods. The Model A Ford hood can do much damage to the fenders, radiator shell, gas tank and the hood itself. Always let the owner open the hood. f. Do not smoke inside a car without permission of the owner. Burn holed and odor will damage upholstery. g. Do not turn on lights, honk horns, or start a car without permission of the owner. h. Do not touch glass or chrome. This leaves fingerprints. i. Do not kick tires or any other parts of the car. j. Do not open trunks or rumble seat lids. k. Do not enter a roped-off area around a car. 2. Other activities best done under the supervision of the owner: a. When entering and exiting a rumble sear, always use the foot pads provided on the bumper and fender left foot first! Be careful not to push the seat back against rear deck. This may dent the deck lid or damage the car. b. When entering the back seat of a Tudor, remember that the front sears tilt up. Be careful, however, not to jam the top of the passenger seat into the choke lever. This will rip the upholstery.

6 DRIVING COURTESY RULES 1. Always maintain a safe distance of at least 300 feet from the car in front of you. Remember, Model A brakes are not really that reliable! 2. Leave a large enough gap between every other Model A to allow modern cars and trucks to pass. This keeps the public from becoming too impatient or contemptuous. 3. If other traffic piles up behind you, move as far as possible to the right and help them to pass. 4. Each driver is responsible for the tour car following you. If that car slows down or stops, then you should slow down or stop to lend assistance when needed. Always keep the car behind you in sight. 5. Stop as soon as possible if the tour car behind you stops. If you see others further behind you who are stopped, or if you have lost all those following you, find a shady spot to stop and wait, or go back to find out what is wrong. This is the only way the group can stay together. Your expertise or spare parts may be just what is needed to get the troubled car back on the road again. 6. Try to keep up with the speed of the leader while maintaining you 300 foot separation. If that speed is too fast for you, then ask the leader to adjust the speed. 7. Once you have joined a group activity, you should not leave that group unless you notify the one in charge that you are leaving. Your unannounced absence away from other cars to avoid nicks and mobility problems. OTHER CLUB COURTESY RULES 1. No profanity. We don t want to appear unprofessional by allowing some poorly chosen words to turn off the other members, potential club members, other clubs, or the public as a whole. 2. No drunkenness. We don t want to jeopardize our safety by having drunken drivers and we do not want to make a bad impression on the public. (We don not, however, oppose social drinking.) 3. Good Conduct. Always be aware that your conduct reflects not only on your family and friends, but also on the local chapter the national clubs, and Model A hobbyists as a whole. TOUR RULES FOR MAN AND MACHINE 1. Fill up with fuel and check radiator coolant level, oil level and tire air pressure before tour departure. 2. Pack plenty of spare parts and a good supply of tools. See list of recommended items. 3. Invite a good mechanic to tour with the group, but do not expect him to repair things you could or should have done yourself. Don t impose on him for too much. 4. Include a cooler and a picnic basket filled with extra goodies just in case of delays. 5. Carry extra water along for your car radiator especially if you have a new rebuilt motor (may run hot!).

This monthly newsletter is mailed to members, prospective members, and editors of similar publications. Its purpose is to keep you informed about what has taken place and to remind you of future activities. Members may publish at no cost, ads for items wanted, for sale, or trade. They are also invited to submit technical Model A information and other interesting tidbits. Material should reach the editor by the last Saturday of the month.
