The start line will be from the club house at the end of Magellan Street on the river bank in front of the Laurie Allen building. Paddlers placed in State and National championships will be participating. Join us for a paddle on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays 4 45 pm, Saturdays 8.00am & Sundays 4:00pm 1

2 The Lismore Marathon kicks off the Northern Marathon series of races. Racing is for all classes of kayaks and surf skis. Distances vary to cater for all abilities. The racing can be more social, than pure racing, for those who just enjoy being part of the scene and wish to participate. This helps the club secure points that go towards determining the winning club over the series. The Northern Marathon Series incorporates six races held between Currumbin in the North and Foster in the South. It is well known for the friendly social atmosphere of each event. The Open Men's and Women s course is twenty two and a half kilometres. There is also a fifteen kilometre and a seven and a half kilometre option. The race course consists of laps around the three bridges, Simes, Robert White and Ballina Street. This makes interesting viewing for spectators and participants who can see lots of action from the bridges or from the newly extended wharf area outside the club house. The race starts around 10am. Entries can be made between 8 and 9.30 am, when briefing occurs. So come on down and participate in some great racing as around 100 boats churn threw the water to cross the line first or beat their personal best times. There will be a pre race dinner at the Lismore Workers ClubBistro, Keen St, Lismore at 6.30 pm Saturday. Pancakes will be available after the race. The price is $4 for as much as you can eat plus drink. We (your club) need help to get ready for the race and help on the day. We need help with lawn mowing; toilet cleaning; shed sweeping; emptying rubbish bins; gaining sponsorship; collecting MacDonald s drink containers; making and putting out road directions to race on the morning of race and helping to cook pancakes and set up tea/coffee on the day; If you can help, contact the race coordinator, Marion Brownlie on All the information you need to know for the race is contained in a table in the upcoming events section, which is further on of this newsletter. Thanks to Northern Star for cover photo. RACING RULES All events in the Northern Marathon Series are conducted under the Marathon Racing Rules of Australian Canoeing. These can be found by going to then clicking Disciplines on the top menu, then Marathon, then AC Competition Rules on the side menu. Important aspects of these rules are set out below. BOUYANCY: All craft must carry sufficient buoyancy to float level when full of water. It is not enough to have buoyancy fitted at one end of the canoe. The buoyancy must be fixed so that it will not become dislodged in the case of submerging or capsize. Sealed air tanks, as typically in recreational kayaks, are acceptable. ASSISTANCE: This must be given to any canoeists in distress. The safety of human life far exceeds the importance of winning. Redress will be made when a canoeist loses time while assistance another. SAFETY: Canoeists should observe the Rules of Navigation, keeping to the right (starboard) side of the channel when proceeding past oncoming craft and must not impede the passage of large vessels using the channel. When cutting a corner, keep watch out for other craft. PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES (PFD s): Under 14 and under 12 competitors must wear their PFD. Other competitors may be required to wear or carry their PFD s in their craft, depending on the discretion of race organisers. Acceptable PFD s are types 2 and 3. The marathon committee strongly supports sportsmanlike contest at all times. A win at all costs attitude is unacceptable. 2

3 A WORD ON DIET With the Lismore Marathon and Paddle for Life coming up it s important to mention the necessity for adequate food intake prior, during and after these events. Eating carbohydrate rich foods up to two hours before paddling will give you plenty of energy stores. While paddling sucking a glucose lolly will give you immediate energy and please remember to sip water or an energy drink. It is also important to replenish your stores of energy after the event with energy rich food. Brad Woodruff has provided us with a link to an article on nutrition and canoeing from the Australian Institute of Sport. The full article can be found at I have included in the following table some food suggestions from this article. Breakfast - Option One Breakfast - Option Two Post-race Snack options Lunch-style Break 4 slices of toast with spread - jam/honey on at least 2 750ml of sports drink 1 banana (optional) PowerBar Protein Plus drink - double serve in 400ml of water ml of sports drink 1 cereal bar Liquid meal replacement (i.e. PowerBar Protein Plus powder) + fluid PowerBar Performance Bar + fluid Yoghurt/Rice cream + banana + fluid Banana plus 300ml 6% sports drink (i.e. Gatorade) 600ml 6% sports drink (i.e. Gatorade) Sandwich - Jam/Vegemite + 300ml 6% sports drink (i.e. Gatorade) Two sandwiches + 750ml 6% sports drink (i.e. Gatorade) AUSTRALIAN CANOEING UPDATE In previous issues of The Bilge I have reported about the financial situation of Australian Canoeing (AC), the main canoeing organization in Australia. Our club is affiliated with AC. Robert Barnes, the chief executive of AC, reported on March 31 that the organization has received the loan of $200,000 that they were seeking from the Australian Sports Commission. AC is seeking the opinion of interested people about their restructure in an important meeting, which will be held on Thursday April 27 at 7PM in Sydney at Sports House. Dr Robert Kidston and Dr Camilla Brockett, both from the Australian Sports Commission will address the meeting. Tony White, our club coach, has indicated his intention to attend. Tony has indicated that he is happy for people to telephone him about any matters relating to this meeting. Tony s phone number is This is an opportunity to present the Australian Sports Commission with your views on how the sport of canoeing should move forward. Full details of the review and a questionnaire can be found at 3

4 CLUB NEWS UPDATE ON MENTOR COACHING PLAN Tony White attended a meeting on 23/3/06 at Kingscliffe with Elissa Morley of Australian Institute of Sport, Tony Clarke and John Kincaid of the North Coast Academy of Sport and Ben Hitchins, the NSW Canoeing Inc. coach. The coaching process and required equipment were discussed. It was resolved to advertise for a mentor coach. Tony Clarke, of the North Coast Academy, re-affirmed his intention to back our application for a grant to develop the club facilities. APRIL FOOLS DAY REPORTS ON CLUB EVENTS April 1st the day of our prestigious pre marathon 2x3 km handicapped sprints. We had a grand turnout of 16 paddlers of all abilities, handicapped over 5 different start times with Glen and Mark having the back marker of six and a half minutes behind the first wave. The course was one circuit with the start at the boat ramp, then around Fawcett s Bridge, back down around Ballina Street bridge and back to the wharf. As Rodney Rose found out racing around bridge pylons can be very tricky. He started the race handicapped with me (Marion) and was all excited because he was staying on my wash, until we hit the turn and kept on turning, all the way over, until he was swimming. Chris Allen, in his new pretty blue Wizard, hasn t learnt the secret of turning it yet. He reckoned he was loosing 5 boat lengths on every turn (5 boat lengths Chris??). Then there were the others, we all know who they were, who accidentally hit or rammed other boats because!!!!!!!! You should have heard the excuses. But some seasoned paddlers such as Vince know all the old tricks, he wanted to drop me of his wash so did a nasty little turn and sprint to achieve his end. When I later addressed him about it, he couldn t stop the big grin, when he blamed it on the fact that he had no rudder that day! (Who did he think he was kidding?) The honour of getting the biggest squeeze on the day goes to Mark Yeager in the grand finale of the last meter, of the last race, in the last sprint to the finish line. I had maneuvered myself into prime position with clear water ahead and 50 meters to go when I caught a glimpse of Glen Curtis and Mark as they can roaring up to me and it was all on for the line. (I thought they had speed boats.) Glen nosed me out of first place and mark got the big squeeze in, between us and was left with no place to go. He was relegated to 3rd and I took 2 nd. The fastest time of the day was Glen Curtis. Racing was followed by yummy, yummy pancakes, flipped served and smiled upon by Larisa Barnes, Colin s better half, practicing for the marathon. Trouble is, by the marathon she will be ready to do her own marathon and present a new baby to the world. She needs help-volunteers please. A lot of happy race banter. A computer system worked on half the night before by Garry as he fine tuned it for the day so that any bugs would be well and truly sorted for our marathon. He also fined tuned his apprentice Angela (co-opted by Gen) for the practice run and marathon. Fran White and Phyllis Waters ran a very efficient registration. Tony White blew the siren for start and everybody happily and willingly pitched into help, including the weather, contributing to a most successful fun day. I know who the April fool was-she could hardly move a few hours later. Reckoned it was harder than doing a marathon! UPCOMING EVENTS PADDLE FOR LIFE SAT 22/4 MON 24/4 All things are go for this important annual event. Tim Limbert, the organiser, advises me that there are a record number of entrants with over 50 people registering so far. The youngest entrant is 12 years old and Cliffie is, of course, the oldest entrant. There are 3 boats of students from Richmond River High School. For all details please consult the website, 4

Apologies:- Nil 5

6 Minutes of the Previous Meeting:- Colin moved that the minutes were a true and accurate record of the previous meeting, with the exception of the date. Bruce seconded the motion. Business Arising:- Ed has applied for a license from Waterways to facilitate our Race Day. Ed will check with Lismore Council re removal of the remaining logs that are stuck under Simes Bridge. Colin is to remind Garry about the printing of envelopes for the payment of hiring fees. Bruce will investigate the allowable size of future orders of rashies from the screen printer. All the rashies previously ordered, except four, have been sold. The new club rashies are considered to be popular with members and a success for the club. There has been no response to our letter from a particular club member regarding boat hiring practices. A followup letter will be sent. Treasurer s Report:- Bruce reported that all bills are paid at present and apart from an outstanding cheque of $100 yet to be cashed, the Club has $ in its everyday account. The term deposit matures in June and will be reinvested at a better rate of interest with an eye to accessibility of these funds, should the application for the grant from Sport and Rec be successful. Correspondence In:- The Australian Red Cross advised clubs of their annual Canoe Marathon at Katherine NT on 11 th June Look for the notice in the shed. Ian Dewey, NSW Canoeing, ed regarding an enquiry about the use of the name Paddle for Life for our local event. The details of the event were sent back to him with an invitation to contact the organizer, Tim Limbert if needed. Tim Limbert advises the name of the local event has been registered as a business name. Correspondence Out:- A letter has been sent to Ms. Donna Pagotto of Lismore Worker s Club thanking them for the use of the monthly meeting room and requesting ongoing use of the facilities. Marion has contacted the SES seeking their assistance with our Race Day. Marion has sent a copy of our grant submission to Tony Clarke, Executive Director of the North Coast Academy of Sport, who in turn has provided a letter of support for the upgrading of our facilities to NSW Sport and Recreation. General Business:- It was decided that Tony White and other club members would approach potential sponsors for our Race Day with the idea of obtaining items to raffle/use as prizes. Tony White reported on a meeting with representatives of the Australian Institute of Sport and the North Coast Academy of Sport regarding the proposed program of coaching juniors to eventually participate in the World Junior Games and the Australian Youth Olympics. They are supportive of our club s participation in this venture. It was decided to ask the rashie supplier for a quote on suitable shorts which are lined for extra comfort and in similar colours to our rashies. Bruce is to follow-up and ask about a sample pair for members to view. Your ideas regarding the shorts are welcome. The committee would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make our recent Sprint Race morning a success. The large stiff broom for use on the ramp has broken. Any magic fairy with fix-it skills would be cheered on. It was decided to communicate with the last round of Come and Triers and invite them to follow-up training at the next Come and Try Day on 14/5/06. Garry was nominated to drop them a line Bruce to update the database so this can happen. Tony White is enquiring about the cost and availability of 2 nd hand Joeys ( small K s) for the possible use of hoped-for junior members. Paddling during the working week for those lucky enough to free themselves of the shackles of the job, will now be at 4.45pm as we race the setting sun towards winter. Meeting closed 8.25pm 6
