THINGS YOU NEVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ORGANISATIONS IN CONFLICT ABOUT DEBT Barbara Davies, Secretary FNCCC NSW Canoeing Inc called a Special General Meeting on 15 March 2008 to vote on motions to wind up or disaffiliate from Australian Canoeing. This motion was defeated and the Board of NSWCI then resigned; no new board was elected, so a process was put in place to wind up NSWCI. Some delegates at the meeting formed a new group called Paddle NSW to replace NSWCI, which was headed for insolvency having found it impossible to meet the steep affiliation fees to AC. NSWCI is the only state body in this situation at present and states that the fee structure is unfairly biased against NSW. AC had incurred significant losses in the past over elite events; been bailed out and restructured to pay off debt with the contribution of the State bodies. Dept of Fair Trading rejected the application to wind up NSWCI and required the vote to be held again. Paddle NSW negotiated with AC who issued a letter in support of Paddle NSW to clubs, advising them to vote to wind up NSWCI (voluntarily) and for the remaining assets to be transferred to Paddle NSW. Our club s committee agreed with these proposals and FNCCC voted in favour of these motions. The alternative was to see the assets dissolve in fees to Fair Trading. Join us for a paddle on Tuesdays, Thursdays, 4.00 pm, Saturdays 8.00am and Sundays 4:00pm 1
2 There have been ongoing negotiations and some attempt at mediation between Paddle NSW and AC and each group states that they hope agreement will be reached in the coming year for Paddle NSW to affiliate with AC. (Yes that s right, let s reinvent the wheel!) Paddle NSW has a focus on recreational paddling and AC is the peak body of the sport with an emphasis on elite athletes and high level competition including the Olympic Games. Both groups have lobbied clubs regarding their positions in their dispute and more recently, seem to be competing for membership. AC has offered for this year in NSW only that clubs can join/affiliate with them for much the same fees to clubs and individual members as existed under our affiliation with NSWCI. (Government regulation of the sport and funding requires each state to have a state body which clubs join and they in turn pass fees onto the peak body, AC.) Our club has long held the view that what we get out of these distant groups amounts to only insurance coverage. AC s offer, which appears to undercut Paddle NSW, means business as usual for us, and meets the needs of all our club members. At present, affiliation with Paddle NSW would mean that aspiring kayakers interested in National or other such competitions would have to join a Queensland club as well as FNCCC or some other expensive and cumbersome arrangement. It was also believed that to participate in the World Masters, paddlers would need AC affiliation. Latest news is that this is unlikely to be necessary. The FNCCC held a Special General Meeting on 14 June and voted to affiliate with AC, this year. No doubt the saga, and the offers will continue. We will keep you informed (only if you promise to stop crying out of boredom) WE ARE DOING WELL IN MARATHON SERIES After three races in the Northern Marathon Series our club is doing well in the points score. We are dominating the men s open K1 division with FNCCC paddlers filling 4 of the top 5 positions.congratualations to Tony Curtis, Glen Curtis, Mark Yager and Bradley Restall for your good effort. CLUB NEWS Marion Brownlie and Barbara Davies are coming first and second in the mature vet women s K1 division. Also Paul Yager, Bruce Taylor and Phil Doumit fill three of the top four places in the mature vet men s K1.Rodney Rose and Vince Cross are performing well in the young vet men s K1 division. Narina Donnelly is coming first in the mature vet women s TK1 division. Thank you to all other FNCCC members who have competed so far this year. Your participation is greatly valued and every entry contributes to the point score. REPORTS ON CLUB EVENTS NMS series Race 3 - BRUNSWICK HEADS - Sunday 8 June Story: Marion Brownlie Picture: Bruce Taylor Despite all appearances earlier in the morning it turned out to be a fine day. Maybe that was why quite a few thought it was a swimming race instead of a paddling race. I guess they can be forgiven though, as there was a fast flowing incoming tide that funnelled the water into the narrow channel between the rocky outcrops about a kilometre from the start. Boats were taking off at all angles in the rip, careering into each other and knocking some unfortunate paddlers in. If it wasn t another boat they could blame then it was the large swell that is usually generated at the start of a race being channelled into a narrow area. (I did see Vince Cross get a vicious side swipe here but he managed to stay afloat.) However some didn t even have that excuse and decided to fall in at some other place along the oyster strewn water way instead. If a deep water entry wasn t in your list of skills, as it is with Tony Curtis s, then mud and oyster treading had to be it. Ask Bruce Taylor and Brad Restall how this is done. Sorry if you fell in and I haven t made you notorious by mentioning your falling out feats on the day. Brunswick, like Bonville, has a lot of shallow water. Adding to this there were lots power boats around the start and finish of the course to add to the experience. These are all factors that make this race very challenging for our paddlers who have the protected little water ways and very little interference from other craft. Thus it greatly adds to paddlers experience and skills. It was great to see our club strongly supported and great results achieved. The results of our club entrants are contained in the table over the page: 3

It was well attended. There were 10 boats with 11 paddlers and everyone reported having a great time. The total distance paddled was about 18 kilometres. Our journey had a bit of everything. We started in the canal estates of the retirement heaven of West Tweed Heads. We paddled upstream on Terranora Creek, crossed a shallow mangrove area and then emerged into the expanse of water known as Terranora Broadwater. I was a little concerned about crossing this section because at some stages we were about 500 metres from shore. Anyone who tipped in would have to perform a deep water entry back into their kayak. I insisted that we all stick together and that everyone wear PFD s. It turned out that on this occasion there was no need for concern. The water was very smooth on our upstream and our return journey as well. At times it was even glassy. As we crossed the Broadwater we enjoyed the wonderful views looking up to Bilambil Heights area. The entrance to Bilambil Creek was difficult to spot as it is behind a mangrove island. Once inside the narrow, more Westerly of the two entrances to the creek, we encountered a wide, tree lined creek. We paddled up through farmland to the village of Bilambil. Here we found a park where we decided to pull our kayaks out of the creek and stop for a snack. Elspeth and Narina scouting around in the village and soon came back bearing cappuccinos which were much appreciated. which could be easily be paddled on another occasion. Our downstream, return journey was assisted by strong out flowing tide which obediently had turned while we were having our break. We took the more Easterly exit to Bilambil Creek which we had not observed on our upstream journey. It was wider and deeper. Once we had crossed the Broadwater we took a slightly different branch of Terranora Creek which took us past Seagulls Leagues Club. We had to negotiate our way past several oyster leases and encountered shallow water in some places. As we approached the ramp where we started the tide was roaring down Terranora Creek. A few of us made a little downstream journey to check out the entrance to Cobaki Broadwater. This is another Broadwater closer to the airport Thanks to all those who attended this paddle. We hope to have another recreational paddle soon. 4
