2 Paddlers Tour de Wardell 10th June 2013 Story & Photos by Jenny It seemed a bit strange to watch the river glide by as only a few short weeks ago we were on the last leg of the Paddle For Life and watched the cars glide by. The smoko stop at Wardell was welcomed by everyone, some celebrated with coffee, others celebrated with a short stop at the town s local amenities block. Bruce celebrated by borrowing a spanner from the local servo to raise his seat and was delighted not to have his knees hitting his chin with every pedal stroke. It was an auspicious day for our honourable President who turned three score and ten, many happy returns of the day Bruce. The return trip seemed a little easier with a very slight tail wind. The morning cycle ended with a most welcome lunch at the Westower Tavern at West Ballina with everyone agreeing, that they had enjoyed the morning and hopefully it can be repeated in the not too distant future.

6 The Hunter Paddle Challenge is back again for 2013! Please see attached the general information & registration form. Missed last year s event? Here is a snapshot of what the paddle challenge is all about The Hunter Paddle Challenge offers keen paddlers the choice of a full 60km course or a half 30km course. The route traverses the scenic upper reaches of the Hunter River from Lorn near Maitland through farm land to historic Morpeth and on to Raymond Terrace, where the shorter course starts, and continues to Hexham passing by nature reserves at Ash Island and finally finishes near the rivers end at Stockton. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the environmental projects undertaken by the organisation. Founded in 1984 by a group of conservationists, the 45 hectare site is a wetland of international significance recognised under the Ramsar agreement and is a safe haven for local and migrating birdlife and a home to a wide range of native flora and fauna. The Hunter Wetland Centre is a community run self funded organisation with charity tax deductable status. Thanks Jake Relf Events & IT Hunter Wetlands Centre PO Box 292 Wallsend 2287 P: M: F:
7 Northern Marathon Series Round 5 Lismore 25 August 2013 Just a quick note to all members to say that the Northern Marathon Series is alive and well. As you know this is a friendly series of races that paddlers enjoy. Our club, which normally has been able to support and compete in the other rounds, has been only moderately present at this year s previous rounds so far for various reasons. Our round in the series is on Sunday, 25 th August. I am asking all of you who are able to, to enter one of the starts in your kayak and therefore support our event. To those who have not done it previously it is not hard and does not require special skills. There are three distances to choose from and the short start is (7.5 km.) and is less than our Saturday morning paddle so it is quite easy to do. Registration is from 8.30 am and as I am doing the initial registration I ll be sure to greet you with a smile. I do hope that you will join us on the day to have some fun and make our event a success. Bruce.

9 Bongil Bongil Bash 2013 Report Sunday 9th June 2013 Sunday 9 th June was a sunny day which was a relief after the downpours of the day before. A small field of 48 paddlers in 44 craft turned out for a fine day of paddling on Bonville Creek through the lush landscape of Bongil Bongil National Park. The Open Mens K1 was hotly contested by Daniel Jenkin (1 st ) and Matt O Garey (2 nd ) both from B.C.K.C. The youngest paddler was 11year old Josh Ingerman from Wynnum-Redlands Club who paddled 9kms with Dad Matt in a K2 and pushed Dad all the way from the back seat. The mature paddler section was well attended with top honours going to Jim Layton (B.C.K.C.) and Bert Dawson (J.P.). Frank Kingsma (new recruit to B.C.K.C.) awed the crowd in his OC1 while Sue Gollagher (Sandgate), Andrew Bourke (Currumbin) and Peter Patch (SUPSA) wowed and amazed us with their skill on the Stand-Up Paddle Boards. Brett Greenwood from Manly Warringah brought a trailer load of new Vajda boats to show to the paddlers. Brett also put in a sterling performance in the Young Vets K1, giving the open K1 s a run for their money. While the numbers were down (perhaps the rain put them off) those in attendance had a very enjoyable day. As usual, the Lions Club were in attendance with their BBQ and cold drinks which went down a treat with everyone. Keep an eye out for the date of our next Bongil Bongil Bash in See you all at Brunswick Race on 14 th July. Happy Paddling Christine Berridge Secretary, Bonville Creek Kayak Club
