2 Executive s Report Welcome to our first newsletter for 2012! I hope you all had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year s break! We have had a great start to the year with all but one of our clubs now fully operational on the Brisbane River. The National Elite Development Sprint Program three month trial finishes this month with selections for underway. Competition is hot during the Olympic year and our Queensland members are firing on all cylinders. We wish you all the best in your endeavours to gain national and Olympic selection. Work is underway to put in place a Club Development Manager and this will be announced in the next 2 weeks. Initially this role will cover seven of our member clubs however the output will assist all clubs with future assistance for membership growth, financial income and the general health of your club and committees. QC have given Para-canoeing (Andrea Wood) the use of 2 x Tk1 s for the growth development of the sport. QC have given Currumbin & Sandgate the use of 2 x Vajda Mini-sonics to assist with their junior development programs I wish you a prosperous new year! See you on the water! Mike Bell 2

3 2012 QLD Canoe Sprint Champs Potential Olympians, 2012 and beyond used the 2012 Queensland Canoe Sprint Championships to build on their preparations. Many will be chasing selection in Australian junior, under 23 and paracanoe canoe sprint teams for the respective world championships later this year. The canoe sprint championships were held at Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast over the weekend of 21 and 22 January Conditions were challenging with the wind slight side and tail wind provided challenges to the athletes and officials. The visiting Italian athletes provided the Australians with some strong competition in the Open Men. Other visiting athletes were from Great Britain, New Zealand, and Austria. Australian's came from all states for the championships. There were many outstanding results were posted across all age groups and classes. Some of these being Jordan Wood (Gold Coast) in the Under 18 Men; Alyce Burnett (Sunshine Coast) and Hailey McGinty (Kawana Waters) in the Open Women; Jy Duffy (Kawana Waters) in the Under 16 Boys; Glenn Pynne (Varsity Paddlers) in the Paracanoe; Matthew Ingerman (Wynnum Redlands) in the veterans; Coco Howcroft (Sunshine Coast) in the Under 18 Women. At the conclusion of the championships the 2012 Queensland Canoe Sprint Championships was announced to compete at the Australian Canoe Sprint Championships in March These championships will be the final selection event for the London Olympics. Final opportunity for qualification will be at the Oceania Canoe Sprint Championships at the beginning of March 10 days before the national championships. Both Brisbane Canoeing and West End Canoe Club are enjoying their brand spanking new Pontoons which were completed and commissioned the week before Christmas. Funding Successful Grant Applicants! The University of QLD Canoe Club and Queensland Sea Kayak Club have both been successful in receiving Active Inclusion Grants of approx. $5000 each.

Seven Queensland Canoeing clubs applied for the funding and we are looking forward to hopefully hearing more success stories!

9 Funding Successful Grant Applicants! The University of QLD Canoe Club and Queensland Sea Kayak Club have both been successful in receiving Active Inclusion Grants of approx. $5000 each. Both clubs will use the funding to provide training to a number of members in Education qualifications. Seven Queensland Canoeing clubs applied for the funding and we are looking forward to hopefully hearing more success stories! Jupiter s Casino Community Benefit Fund The Queensland Government established the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund (JCCBF) in 1987 to provide funding to community groups in Queensland. The JCCBF receives money from taxes on casinos. It distributes these funds to notfor-profit community groups on a quarterly basis. The JCCBF is just one way the Government returns taxes from gambling activities. In redistributing gambling taxes through its grants program, the JCCBF plays an important role in ensuring, on balance, the whole State benefits from gambling in Queensland. How much can I apply for? One-off grants of up to $150,000 are allocated to approved not-for-profit organisations to help them provide community services or activities that benefit the community. These grants are not intended to replace existing sources of support for these organisations. Who can apply? Applications must be from Queensland-based organisations, located within the geographical jurisdiction from the Queensland and New South Wales border, to the northern boundaries of Boulia, Winton, Barcaldine and Isaac. Funding Rounds The JCCBF has four annual funding rounds. The closing dates for applications are 28 February, 31 May, 31 August and 30 November. 9

10 Apply now for the Young Athlete Assistance Program Grant NOW OPEN Program Objective Helping our kids to excel in sport This Program assists young athletes in Queensland who have competed at a State or State School Championship, National or National School Championship or International Championship. Eligibility Applicants eligible for support are those who: within the last 6 months have competed or officiated at a: Queensland State Championship Queensland State School Championship Australian National Championship Australian National School Championship International Championship are residents of Queensland for more than 12 months preceding the championship; are under the age of 18 at the start of the championship; reside more than 200km radial distance from the championship location for the one-way trip do not hold a current Queensland Academy of Sport Scholarship. Scope of financial assistance Financial assistance of $200 is available to assist with the cost of travel and accommodation for the eligible championship. A list of the eligible championships, as nominated by Queensland School Sport Unit or the relevant State or National Sporting Organisation, is published under the "Eligibility" section above. Athletes are only eligible to receive financial assistance once every two years from the start date of an eligible championship. Lodging an application does not guarantee funding. Applications will not be considered before the start of a championship. As the funding is provided retrospectively, applicants are required to use their own resources to travel to championships. 10

11 Cash 4 Clubs Grants Sport in the community is about local people working together to provide opportunities to enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle. Betfair recognises the importance of community sport, setting up Cash 4 Clubs to facilitate fundraising for community sports clubs throughout the country. Cash 4 Clubs offers all sports clubs in Australia the chance to receive grants up to $1000. It is a simple scheme aimed at giving community clubs a helping hand. See for more info. SUNDAY 4TH MARCH Sandgate Canoe Club Our club s contribution this year to Clean Up Australia Day will be a clean up of the beach at Jubilee Creek. Jubilee Creek is a popular destination for our seakayakers (as well as many others obviously) and any of us who have been there will know that it is a mess, particularly with discarded bottles and cans. The plan is to set off from Yundah Street at 7am on Sunday 4th March (high tide is 6.26am and we will need a sufficiently high tide to get into Jubilee Creek). Bring working/gardening gloves and empty hatches. If anyone has a tinny (or similar), that would be great to put junk into. Please phone Mark on or just turn up on the day. We will need to register all volunteers with the CUA organisation to cover us for injury, etc. 12
