This year we have a fantastic group of dedicated staff members and volunteers. We appreciate all your support and look forward to seeing everyone around the city of lakes! 6 CanoeKids Coaching Course- June 9 th & 10 th The CanoeKids Coaching Course is the minimum requirement for all coaches in Canada. This course is offered by the ADCKC to provide information on how to develop safety awareness and confidence on the water. Once this course is completed, coaches will be able to build athletes motor skills, knowledge, and confidence. To register click here. U16-Open #1 Regatta- June 11 th The first regular regatta of the year is a chance for spring paddlers to gear up for the racing season. Junior Development Coach Camp- June 17 th & 18 th This year the ADCKC is offering a Junior Coach Development Camp, in addition to the CanoeKids Coaching Course. This is designed to provide Junior Coaches with practical skillsets and knowledge including how to deliver the CanoeKids program, designing and using lesson plans, war-canoe certification, and on-water practice. Coaches will also learn how to work with kids in the boats, how to design activities out of the boats, and how to implement the CanoeKids rewards program. To register click here. ADCKC Awards Night- June 12 th An evening of celebration in honour of the Atlantic Division s successful athletes and volunteers. Reflecting on the 2016 racing season, the ADCKC will recognize outstanding athletes by presenting them with certificates and awards. The purchase of a $10 ticket will include appetizers, desserts, and drinks. This event will also be used for the official announcement of the 2017 Canada Games team. Please RSVP by June 8 th. Upcoming Events For more information on these events visit ADCKC.ca ADCKC and Canada Games Trials- June 3 rd & 4 th This fast-approaching event is Nova Scotia s selection trials for the 2017 Canada Games Team, and the first chance for the U17 athletes to be named to the Nova Scotia Core Team. The Canada Games Team will compete in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the second week of the Canada Summer Games in August. The Nova Scotia team selected from Trials will also compete in Shawinigan, Quebec in July at the Canada Cup Regatta. 6

7 ImmediaC Canadian Sprint Team Trials 2- June 23 rd -25 th RBC Lake Banook Cleanup- June 28 th Once again the ADCKC is teaming up with the RBC Day of Service to organize a community Lake Banook clean up. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend and volunteer. Take advantage of this awesome opportunity to help take care of our beautiful lake! Following the first set of trials that took place in Montréal, Quebec in May, Nova Scotia will be hosting the second set right here in Dartmouth! This set of trials will be used to determine the teams for the Junior, U23, Senior, and Paracanoe World Championships. These trials will also determine the U17 Canada Cup/CANAMEX and Olympic Hopes team selections, as well as Junior PanAm team selection and D-card ranking. CanoeKayak World Cup The ADCKC would like to recognize our local canoe and kayak athletes competing in World Cups 2 & 3 in Szeged, Hungary and Belgrade, Serbia. They host fun-filled, non-competitive events across North America where young girls are given the opportunity to connect with Fast and Female ambassadors, who are elite female Olympians/Paralympians and aspiring Olympians/Paralympians. Their Vision: A positive, empowering culture for girls in sport. Their Mission: Keep girls healthy, happy, and active in sport throughout their teens. CHAMP CHATS Girls age 8-18 meet inspiring role models from sport to develop physical literacy through a circuit of exercises suitable for all sport backgrounds and make friends. They get to dance, do yoga, and get autographs from great role models on a poster that they take home to remind them of their empowering experience. CHAMP CHAT GOALS Socialize in a fun and non-competitive context Be inspired by local female sports role models Learn about the 3 reasons girls quit sports Make friends Work together to keep girls in sports Make sure to keep an eye on the Fast and Female website or their Facebook and Twitter pages for more information and dates. Game plan Mentor Una Lounder (right) with athlete Hannah MacIntosh (left) Game Plan Game Plan, Canada s national athlete total wellness program, supports and empowers high-performance athletes to pursue excellence during and beyond their sporting careers. Taking a proactive approach to total athlete wellness, the program is designed to help athletes navigate change and focus on performing when it matters most. Game Plan was initiated in response to the needs identified by athletes, coaches and sport system stakeholders in the 2010 Olympic Games Debrief Report and the 2011 Business Report. Research suggests that engaging in non-sport activities, while actively training and competing, can actually help athletes achieve better results both in sport and in life. 9 Meet Our Local Heroes! Hannah MacIntosh MacIntosh is a 22-year-old advocate for women s canoe, and women in sport. She is currently studying Business at Mount Saint Vincent University, and is a member of Canada s Canoe Kayak Senior National Team. At the 2017 World Cup 2, she placed 5 th in C2-200m and will be competing again at World Cup 3 during the first weekend in June. MacIntosh is a member of Senobe Aquatic Club and her favorite place to paddle Craig Spence Spence is 21 years old, and has lived in Dartmouth for most of his life. He is a member of the Cheema Racing Club, and is enrolled at Dalhousie University as a Statistics major. Spence is currently ranked Canada s fastest C1 1000m paddler, and came 7 th at World Cup 2 in Szeged, Hungary while up against the world s best. Luckily for us, Spence took time out of his busy racing series to answer exclusive interview questions! While most know that Spence is a studentathlete, many wonder what he does in his spare time. Spence is a coffee enthusiast, he enjoys making coffee and visiting local coffee shops with friends. When he is on the water however, his favorite place to be is in Montreal, Quebec I love the city and taking the subway to practice, and the course is really nice! When it comes to racing, prior mental and physical prep is crucial to any athlete. Spence s favorite pre-race snack is a bagel since I eat one every day he says. Banook, it s the best place in the world she says. MacIntosh has had many great achievements in her paddling career, but says her goal is to compete at the Olympic games. To train as often as high performance athletes do, there must be a passion for the sport. When asked why she loves the sport, MacIntosh answered, I ve grown up in the sport and it has allowed me to travel the world and make amazing friends! I love pushing myself and the rush you get from achieving a goal. MacIntosh likes to keep a positive attitude when it comes to racing, and tries to laugh before she goes on the water. As a favorite pre-race snack, she had an original answer of sweet potatoes with peanut butter, don t knock it until you try it she says. Even some of the top athletes have role models, MacIntosh states my role model growing up was Maria Halavrezos, she always set a great example for us at Senobe. Now as a national team athlete I am inspired by my teammates everyday. To get into his racing zone, Spence says, I usually just try to stay relaxed and listen to some music! Spence hasn t always been the canoer he is today, and he reminded us of his amateur years. When asked if he had any embarrassing memories of the sport, Spence told us when I wasn t catching with my blade straight, my coach taped a stick to my paddle so it looked like a cross, and if I didn't catch straight the stick would hit me in the face. 9
