This year sees the sprint race program being conducted across three states in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. AC Sprint Race Committee continues to support the ongoing development of international standard facilities across Australia and is keen to assist the development of athletes and officials in all states by taking the national series event program to states that can meet venue and facilities criteria. With the assistance of the ACSRC and host state provision of volunteer and official s resources, the national series facilitates state athlete exposure to nationally ranked athletes, opportunities for national camps and clinics, media exposure opportunities and the opportunity for national event funding support. For the first time in the GP National Series, medals will be awarded for ALL events. In addition, age division awards based on accumulated points for the best male and best female athletes over the regatta series, including the Australian Championships. Will be awarded with a commemorative trophy and prizes. The Australian Championships at Sydney International Regatta Centre which double as one of two national selection events in 2012, will again be the premier event on the racing calendar for athletes from all across Australia but the ICF Oceania Championships will be very important to Australia s chances at the London Olympics as we vie with other Oceania countries to secure vital competition places on the Olympic program. 6 K4 1000M 2nd WK1 200m equal 4th 8 WK th 2010/2011 Season Highlights World Cup Performances The team took home 3 medals from each of the first 2 World Cups in Poland and Racice and a single bronze medal from the final World Cup in Duisburg. Alana Nicholls was the star performer of the team, coming away with 3 medals across the 3 World Cups this year. The West Australian paddler lead the way for the Aussies taking 2 medals at the first World Cup in Poznan where WK4 500m 5th she claimed silver in the women s 500m final and bronze over 200m. Nicholls went on to take an inaugural gold medal in the Ladies K1 500m at World Cup 2 in Racice, firmly establishing herself as a contender ahead of London. The Men s K4 crew (of Tate Smith, David Smith, Murray Stewart & Jacob Clear) signalled their intentions ahead of the World Champs with a silver medal at World Cup 2 before claiming Australia s only medal in Duisburg, a bronze over 1000m. WK1 1000m BRONZE WK2 200m BRONZE The K4 500m women s team of Hailey McGinty, Naomi Flood, Hannah Davis and Rachel Lovell claimed a bronze medal in Poznan reinforcing Australia s growing crew boat success. London Test Event Fresh on the back of a successful World Championships in Szeged recently, World Cup gold medallist Alana Nicholls continued her impressive season to date taking out the women s K1 500m final whilst Ken Wallace secured a place in IMAGEs balint vekassy the K1 1000m men s final where he managed 8th in addition to an 8th place finish in the K2 with David Smith. Jo Brigden-Jones was 4th in the B final of the women s 200m sprint. World Champs & Olympic qualification In the all important pre-olympic year, Australia have thus far qualified several berths at the London Games next year with the men s K4 crew securing their place with a sensational silver medal at the Szeged World Championships. The historic result was the best ever by an Australian men s K4 crew with their silver medal performance faster than the previous world record time. Hannah Davis & Lyndsie Fogarty of the Beijing Bronze medal winning K4 crew joined a new look women s K4 crew who finished a credible 5th in Szeged and earned their spot on the London starting line. Both men s and women s K4 results show promise of some exciting results in London next year. Alana Nicholls peaked at just the right time, ensuring the K1 women a spot in the 500m event in London after two top-5 finishes in the 200m & 500m finals. After her successful World Cup campaign, Nicholls continued her rise to success with two fantastic performances racing her first ever individual World Championships events. In the non- Olympic events, Naomi Flood picked up bronze in the ladies 1000m final whilst Hannah Davis and Jo Brigden-Jones took home bronze in the K2 200m final. With 9 athlete quotas (K = 4 quotas, WK4 500 = 4 quotas & WK1 500 & 200 = 1 quota) already booked, athletes will get a final chance to qualify remaining quotas at the Oceania Championships in March. Australia will look to qualify up to 3 men s kayak quotas in K2 and K1, 3 canoe quotas in C2 & C1 and an additional women s kayak quota at the Penrith event from March 2-4 next year. 9

7 Who to Watch MEN K4 Crew The current K4 crew won an unprecedented silver medal at the 2011 World Champs following a silver and bronze medal during the World Cups. The K4 crew of Tate Smith, David Smith, Murray Stewart and Jacob Clear produced an historic achievement in taking World Championship silver in a competitive time that would have been ahead of world record time should they have won. Ken Wallace After a somewhat disappointing World Cup and World Championships in 2011 in which Wallace missed the 1000m A final, Ken will be eager to return to his best in 2012 in order to again be in medal contention come Olympics time. Wallace will be spurred by the return of Olympic gold medallist, Clint Robinson who will attempt to once again earn his place on the Olympic team. Clint Robinson Making his comeback after several years away from the sport, Robinson is well credentialed having competed at 5 Olympic Games and winning a full complement of gold, silver and bronze medals. As a member of the AIS hall of Fame, Robinson is one of Australia s all time great athletes and remains a standout performer on the Surf Life Saving scene where he is the most decorated Ski Title holder. He has also recently won the Molokai World Championship Ski race in Hawaii. He will look to earn a berth on the team in the coveted K1 spot but will need to unseat reigning K1 500m Olympic champ Ken Wallace to do so. MURRAY STEWART The Jack of all Distances, Murray was a medallist in every event at the 2011 Australian Titles. As well as being a foundation member of the Men s K4, watch out for him pushing the Men s K1 times. WOMEN Alana Nicholls Following her successful World Cup and World Championship campaign, with podium finishes, Nicholls will be eager to earn her K1 spot on the team and race the events she helped qualify in Szeged. She could be on track to take the inaugural Women s 200m event in London, as she continues to find speed in the sprint events. The newly introduced distance is a favoured event for Nicholls who claimed a bronze medal in Poznan. She has also found success over 500m taking World Cup gold in Racice in addition to a silver medal at the Poznan World Cup. In her most successful year to date, Alana has established herself as a front runner not only for Australian team selection, but for a coveted Olympic medal in Jo Brigden-Jones The 2010 K1 World Cup overall title holder, Brigden-Jones is returning from a serious shoulder injury and a lengthy rehabilitation. Changing events to race with the Women s K4 in 2011, their Worlds performance has proved she s progressing back to winning form. WK4 Crew The Ladies K4 crew took a World Cup bronze in Poznan before finishing a respectable 5th at the 2011 World Champs in Szeged this year. The new combination of Rachel Lovell, Hannah Davis, Jo Brigden-Jones and Lyndsie Fogarty proved a successful formula promising hope for further crew boat success at the London Games

It is an Olympic Year and the goal is set: GOLD at London 2012! It is a year when everything is about winning or losing. A few centimeters are enough to separate winners from the rest. I am not talking about seconds or metres... just few centimeters! It takes more than 100% effort on the day to win on a regular basis. Very often the minor details in your training preparation, and support team around you makes that small but important difference. That said, whatever you are doing, whether you are winning or losing, there are people around who care about you. A very important part of the competitors lifestyle is to be very well balanced between sport and family, hard work and great fun. Every part is vitally important for the great result! Good luck and have fun during AC Sprint Series! Martin Marinov NATIONAL CANOE SPRINT HEAD COACH 32 33
