2 welcome Australian Canoeing Slalom Race Committee would like to welcome all athletes, officials and spectators to the 2012 Australian Canoeing Slalom Series which began at the National Champs in Tasmania in January. This promises to be an exciting season of competition as we lead into the London Olympics with athletes vying to secure places on the Australian Olympic Canoe/ Kayak Team and the national teams which will participate in the 5 Slalom World Cups. This year selection will be finalised over 2 events conducted on the Sydney 2000 Olympic purpose-built course in Penrith. The Australian Open kicks off the domestic slalom season and serves as the first selection event for the national and Olympic teams. The star-studded event will showcase over 200 athletes representing 24 different nations and boasts a line-up including Olympic and World champions alike. The Oceania Championships is Australia s last opportunity to qualify the remaining Oceania quotas in the men s K1 and C1 events and will finalise selection for the Australian team. 5 LEANNE & ROS, 2011 World cup medalists 6 K1W - 19th in semi C2M - 23rd in heats 2010/2011 Season Highlights World Cup Performances The Australian women again proved a force to be reckoned with dominating the Canoe discipline across the first three World Cups, claiming 7 of the 9 medals on offer and taking an historic clean sweep in the ladies canoe at L Argentiere Australia s most successful world cup was in Tacen where six athletes qualified for seven finals. Rosalyn Lawrence grabbed a prestigious gold medal at the Tacen World Cup beating Melbourne s Leanne Guinea by 0.31 seconds in a barnstorming finish, blitzing the field. William Forsyth was the best of the Aussie men in Tacen claiming a world cup finals berth and finishing 9th in the men s K1 final C1M TEAM - 7th The Aussie trio of Jessica Fox, Rosalyn Lawrence and Leanne Guinea continued their dominance taking a clean sweep at the L Argentiere World Cup in France where Fox also claimed a 7th in the kayak final. Fox made it back to back Canoe gold with another win in Markkleeberg, Germany ahead of Rosalyn Lawrence picking up a bronze medal this time whilst Beijing Olympic finalist, Warwick Draper produced a 13th in the K1 semi final. Rosalyn Lawrence capped off a fine individual series which saw her medal at each of the four World Cups. Lawrence continued her excellent run of form in Prague taking out the women s C1 event for the second time in the series after setting a blistering time down the course to hold out local favourite Katerina Hoskova. IMAGEs balint vekassy C1W TEAM - GOLD 2011 WORLD CHAMPs WOMEN S K1 Semi-Final 19th Jessica Fox secured Australia s Olympic qualification for London spot in the women s K1 event after finishing 19th in the semi final. With the top 15 nations qualifying a berth for London 2012 from the world championships, Fox completed the course in a time of , placing Australia 11th overall in the list of nations. Ros Lawrence and Sarah Grant had also met the qualifying standard in the heats phase. Women s C1 Team - GOLD Australia s golden girls Jessica Fox, Ros Lawrence and Leanne Guinea won the C1 Women s Team Event on the final day of the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. It was the first time the event has been contested at the World Championships and shows the depth of talent in the discipline, which is not yet on the Olympic program. The team victory was some consolation for disappointment in the individual event where Fox finished in 8th in the Final, Guinea in 11th and Lawrence came 14th in the Semis. MEN S CANOE EVENTS In the C2 men s event, Kynan Maley and Rob Jeffery earned the Oceania continental Olympic quota for Australia, finishing in 23rd position and 12th nation overall. Australia will be now able to qualify the two remaining places in men s C1 and men s K1 at the Oceania Championships at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium, February New Zealand and Cook Islands are eligible for the C1 quota while only Australia and Cook Islands will fight for the K1 Mens Olympic quota. MEN S KAYAK EVENTS Both Will Forsythe and Warwick Draper came agonisingly close to the semi final and a shot at the global qualification. The kayaks will have to wait until February to secure the Aussie quota for London, which is easily within their grasp. 7

Australian Canoeing will nominate Athletes to the AOC for potential selection to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team. Australian Canoeing will only nominate Athletes to the AOC in accordance with the total number of quota places awarded to Australia under the ICF Participation Criteria, following the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Oceania Championships. For the purpose of selecting Athletes to nominate to the AOC, Australian Canoeing will conduct Nomination Trials in each Olympic event. Selection of the 2012 Australian CANOE SLALOM OLYMPIC Team The Olympic Slalom team will be selected based on results from the Australian Open (10-12th Feb) and the Oceania Championships (24-26th Feb) in Penrith. Australia has already secured an Olympic berth in the women s K1 and men s C2 following the 2011 World Championship results. The K1 Men and C1 Men quotas will be up for grabs at the Slalom Oceania Championships from the 24-26th February in Penrith. The highest placed Oceania athlete following the selection events will earn the remaining NOC quota. Australia can qualify a maximum of 5 athlete quotas for the London Games. CANOE Slalom Calendar 2012 Olympic Canoeing Slalom events first appeared in Munich in 1972 and then not again until Barcelona 1992, where it was held on a specially built artificial course. It has been on the program ever since and continues to be one of the spectacles of the Games. Australia has achieved three slalom medals but still seeks that elusive gold. Familiar with creating history, Australia s first slalom medallist and first woman to win a canoe/kayak medal Danielle Woodward will be in London in 2012 as head of Athlete Services for the Australian Olympic Team. It has been 20 years since Woodward s breakthrough and the Australians are ready to strike slalom gold Canoe SLALOM Olympic SNAPSHOT Venue The Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire, UK Dates Sunday 29 July Thursday 2 August 2012 Medal events 4 Athletes 82 The Lee Valley White Water Centre was the first of the new London 2012 venues to be opened for the public to use and enjoy ahead of the Games. 9 WILL FORSYTHE WARWICK DRAPER Who to Watch WOMEN LEANNE GUINEA IMAGE BY BALINT VEKASSY MEN William Forsythe The Tacen world cup finalist is poised for a strong year leading into London and has begun the year in style once again, winning his third consecutive K1 National title. Forsythe claimed silver at the Australian Open amongst a strong international field in 2011, and with an Olympic team spot up for grabs, Forsythe will be eager to replicate his Australian Open form and back up at the Oceania event to secure his place on the Australian Olympic team. Kate Lawrence Looking to follow in the footsteps of older sister Jacqui who won silver in Beijing, Lawrence is the most experienced of the girls competing for an Olympic berth, producing her best year in 2008 when she won a World Cup event and was World Cup series champion. In 2010 she finished 9th at the World Championships, while in 2011 her best result was a 9th place finish at World Cup 1, but expect the 28 year old to be hungry for success in Jessica Fox The 2010 World Junior kayak and Canoe Champion and Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Jessica Fox is poised for another stellar year ahead this season. Fox has flourished since her Youth Olympic campaign, going on to claim an historic senior world cup gold in Seu and taking bronze at the 2010 Slovenia World championships. In 2011 Fox won back to back C1 gold medals at World Cups 2 and 3, before finishing in 19th place in the semi finals at the World Championships, securing an Olympic quota for the team. Rosalyn Lawrence The ICF athlete of the month in August 2011, Lawrence began the season with gold and bronze at the Australian Slalom Open before making her intentions clear, claiming a medal at each of the four Slalom World Cups in Lawrence won gold in both Tacen and Prague World Cups in addition to a silver and bronze medal, making her most successful campaign to date. Having added a C1 Wildwater world championship title to her name, there is no doubt Lawrence has the ability to earn her Olympic berth and follow in the footsteps of older sister Jacqui. Sarah Grant Born in Victoria, Grant moved to Sydney in 2009 and has continued to improve steadily, with the K1 specialist producing her best international result in 2010, finishing sixth at the World Championships in Tacen. In 2011, the 25 year old reached the semi finals on three occasions at World Cup level, and after kicking off 2012 with a second place finish at Nationals, Grant is right in contention to push for Olympic senior selection. Leanne Guinea - Guinea promises to be amongst the medals for the Women s Canoe events, having already claimed a silver and bronze medal at the 2011 World cups. Guinea took out the inaugural title in 2009 and claimed silver at the World Championships in Whilst the Women s C1 will not be competed at the London Olympics, Guinea will again be a strong contender for national team selection with 5 Slalom World Cup events on offer in Lucien Delfour The Frenchman took out the Men s Kayak win on the Penrith course at last years Australian Open amongst a very strong international field and had a sensational year in 2010 having made the K1 men s final on debut at the Senior World Champs. He is set for another big year 2012; however a coveted Olympic berth in London is likely to be out of reach for the international talent who requires Australian citizenship to ensure his eligibility. Warwick Draper The most senior team member, Draper has a wealth of paddling experience and will be a likely contender having been a constant on the team for the past 10 years. The two time Olympian finished 9th in Athens and 5th in Beijing. Can he make it a hatrick and make the team for London? Robin Jeffery Look out for the South African born 23 year old who combined in 2011 with Kynan Maley to secure Australia a C2M Olympic berth. Jeffery is a front runner for the national team and could become the first Australian to compete in two disciplines in London this year. Kynan Maley After having qualified Australia s Athens Olympic berth, Maley will be keen to earn his place on the Olympic team for the first time in his career. One of the senior members on the team, Maley will have two chances to post a strong world championship result in both the men s canoe events. Ian Borrows The 22 year old NSWIS paddler has started 2012 in positive fashion taking out the NZ Open title at the end of January, after finishing second at the National Championships at the start of the new year in Tasmania. Ethan Hodson A wrist injury restricted the 21 year old in 2011 and despite missing the world championships he achieved a 2nd place at the Merano International. An exciting future awaits the NSWIS paddler who will look to add to his 2010 Oceania Open and Southern Cup victories. Jaxon Merritt The 20 year old took giant strides in 2011, making his senior World Championships debut, after impressing earlier that year with a third place finish at Nationals, and you can expect bigger things from the Victorian in ROBIN JEFFERY MALEY & JEFFERY 14 JESSICA FOX IMAGE BALINT VEKASSY ROS LAWRENCE IMAGE BALINT VEKASSY 15

Over 200 athletes from 24 countries will take on the Penrith Whitewater Stadium rapids for the 2012 Slalom Australian Open, and with a World Class field to contest the three day event and a host of past and current world champions competing, the scene is set for some fast and exciting racing in this premier event. The event will be the first selection event to determine the 2012 teams, including Olympic selection, with a win at the Australian Open going a long way to securing an Olympic berth. Racing is set to commence on Friday with qualification runs for all events, followed by the women s K1 and men s C1 semi finals and finals on Saturday, with the remaining events scheduled for Sunday. The women s K1 event promises to be an exciting affair with NSWIS trio Jessica Fox, Rosalyn Lawrence and Kate Lawrence, and VIS paddler Sarah Grant set to battle it out, as they rival one another for the women s single Olympic spot, and with just over a second separating them at Nationals earlier this year, this race should go down to the wire. Austria s 2011 Slalom K1 World Champion Corinna Kuhnle will be hard to beat for overall honours, but expect the Australian contingent to push the champ all the way, along with fellow countrywoman Violetta Oblinger-Peters, Elena Kaliska (SVK) and Eva Tercelj (SLO) who finished 6th, 7th and 9th respectively at Worlds last year. Overall honours will prove tough for the Aussies, with a very strong international contingent present including the three medal winners from last year s World Champs; Denis Gargaud Chanut (FRA), Nico Bettge (GER) and Matej Benus (SVK). Multiple Olympic and World Champion Tony Estanguet and Great Britain s Olympic silver medallist David Florence are also set to challenge for line honours in what could be a preview of the Olympic final later this year. On Sunday the men s C2 race will commence proceedings, and looking to secure their spots in the C2 come London with little competition amongst the Australian Ranks, expect Maley and Jeffery to come out firing regardless and take it up to the strong international field, going head to head with the likes of French World Champs silver medallists Fabian Lefevre and Denis Gargaud- Chanut, and Slovakian bronze medallists Ladislav and Peter Skantar. Look out for emerging Tasmania duo, U18 athletes Andrew Eckhardt and Daniel Watkins who are showing positive signs as athletes to look out for in the future. A star studded world class field will Line up for the men s K1, led by current Slovakian World Champion Peter Kauzer, World champ bronze medallist Fabian Lefevre and Italy s Danielle Molmenti, but expect Australian trio, Lucien Delfour, Will Forsythe and Warwick Draper to push their international counterparts. Embarking on competing at his third consecutive Olympics, Draper and current National Champion Forsythe appear to be the frontrunners to compete in the men s K1 in London, but don t discount the likes of Jaxon Merritt (VIS), Sam Lyons (NSWIS) and Joey Croft (NSWIS) from making a charge. The women s C1 event will round off The men s C1 finals will also be raced on Saturday an exciting weekend of racing, and and after teaming up to qualify their spots for although not contested at Olympic London in the men s C2 event, WAIS duo Kynan level, expect Aussie girls Jessica Fox, Maley and Robin Jeffery will go head to head as Ros Lawrence and Leanne Guinea, they try to get the advantage heading into the who are ranked one, two and three JESSICA FOX Oceania Champs later this month. With a depth of talented ladies across all ages the future looks bright and currently leading the way are NSWIS duo Jessica Fox and Rosalyn Lawrence, and Victoria s Leanne Guinea. At just 22 years of age Lawrence had a fantastic 2011 winning medals at all four World Cup events including gold at World Cups 1 and 4, and was titled Overall women s C1 World Cup series winner, following victory in the women s C1 at the Wildwater World Championships earlier in the year, and has now established herself as the one to beat on the World stage. Closely following in her footsteps, 17 year old Jessica Fox won two women s C1 gold medals at World Cups 2 and 3, despite a back injury sidelining the young star for the other two world cup events, and in addition to fulfilling her commitments to the K1 discipline in which she is equally adept. Fox most recently defeated Lawrence at the 2012 National Championships, promising another year of healthy competition amongst the Aussie stars. Capping off Australia s dominance in the sport in 2011 was 26 year old Victorian paddler Leanne Guinea, who will forever be remembered as the inaugural winner of the C1W title at the 2009 World Championships as an exhibition event, and in 2011 she finished second behind Lawrence in the Overall World Cups series after winning silver and a bronze medal. NEW RENAULT KOLEOS. THE SUV FOR LIFE S MOST CHALLENGING JOURNEYS. Slalom stars of the future The National Talent Squad (NTS)/Junior Development Tour was formed to help raise the standard of junior canoe slalom paddling in Australia. The Squads are selected from the highest ranked U14, U16 and U18 paddlers in Australia. The squads have been set up with a focus for national development of Junior talent, this enables national programs to target their resources, providing extra opportunities for paddlers to learn what is required to train and race at an elite level in canoe slalom. This year s NTS will participate in two Junior Development Tours to USA and New Zealand. Tour Dates: Development Tour to New Zealand (30 March 12 April, 2012) Development Tour to Wausau, USA (11-15 July). Three camps will be held in Penrith throughout the year which will include on water training sessions with video feedback as well as off water discussions on training plans, diet, injury management, boat repair and psychology. This squad has become the launching pad for selection onto the national junior team; its existence enables those who are just outside teams to be given extra support through the year by attending camps. DRIVE THE CHANGE The new Renault Koleos combines elegance and versatility to make every journey a pleasure. High quality features include Sat Nav, Bluetooth, 5-star EURO NCAP safety, a 5-year unlimited kms warranty plus plenty of room for your sports gear. FIND YOUR NEAREST DEALER OR BOOK A TEST DRIVE AT RENAULT.COM.AU ROS LAWRENCE IMAGE BALINT VEKASSY 20 With the women s C1 event raced at National competition within Australia, the future development of the discipline is exciting with the sport, with girls now taking up the sport from a much younger age and should put Australia in the box seat to achieve Olympic success from 2016 and beyond. 21
