6 Start within ten seconds! With this familiar command, racing will begin bright and early at 8am on Wednesday March 10 with the heats of the K1 men 1000m. The nationals are back in Penrith after a successful outing in 2009 much further west at Champion Lakes, Perth, where it was David Smith who took the line honours and national championship in the 1000m event. The pretenders to the kilometer throne can expect a tougher race this time with Ken Wallace in early form following his win of the Oceania event two weeks ago. Here s an early tip for the fast action, don t miss the semi finals on the way to the final when the heat will be on to make the cut for a finals berth. on a new significance now the O word is attached, featuring Gitch versus Goble and the rest of the specialist speed machines. Watch out for young guns, Wayne Dunbar, Oceania Under 18 winner, and Glenn Rypp a finalist at last year s junior world championship. Hot on their heels are the next generation of racers, Scott Smith of Illawarra, Jeremy Petho from West Lakes and Charlie Copeland of Sunshine Coast to name but a few. With many of the Beijing cycle athletes either on the bench or in retirement all eyes will be on Jo Brigden-Jones across all distances and Hannah Davis who is favouring the 200m sprint. Another not to miss showdown in the senior men will be the K2 1000m with world silver medalists Smith and Morrison and the Murray Stewart and Jacob Clear combo ready to fire on all cylinders. And don t forget the 200m events which have taken Among those jostling for position will be Queensland s Hailey McGinty and Bernadette Wallace, South Australians Anna Haymes, back from injury, Mieke Boerema and junior, Fiona Kidd, will be looking to make their mark as will the Illawarra women, Elysse Yardley, Lauren Smith and Maddison Prior, a double finalist at last year s junior worlds in Moscow. Look no further than the four heats in the women s Under 16 class for encouraging signs that the long-term future in women s kayak can be bright and healthy and it is here that the impact of recent NTID initiatives is making its mark. Bright signs are also appearing in the men s canoe with young Queenslanders, Alex Haas and Jake Donaghy posting internationally competitive age group times and closing the gap on the seniors. Following on from the Oceania Open look out for David Rolfe and other Para Canoeists who are making their mark in the 200m events as Australian Canoeing and the Below: David Smith and Luke Morrison claim silver in the K2 1000m at 2009 World Championships Above: Matt Goble, World Cup medallist in K1 200m in 2009 International Canoe Federation support the campaign for Paralympic inclusion in Also, new on the block will be Andrea Wood who has made the switch to women s C1, further proof that the times are changing. As well as racing for national championship honours and personal bests, many athletes will be competing for selection to national teams. The nationals will be the main selection event, for the senior team for World Cups, the 2010 World Championships in Poznan, Poland, in August as well as other Australian teams including an emerging athlete tour, junior teams for the Ruhr Regatta in Bochum in June, the Olympic Hopes competition in Slovakia in September, the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and a National Talent Squad. Good luck to you all! Finally, the officials and volunteers at this regatta have matched the dedication and commitment of the athletes over numerous years and will be deserving of your support and appreciation to be able to perform at their best on the day. Thanks in advance!

11 The National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program is an Australian Sports Commission initiative that works with Australian Canoeing to identify talented athletes, 12 years and older, and prepare them for participation in domestic, national and eventually, international competition. The program utilises information across all disciplines of sports science to identify young athletes with characteristics associated with elite performance. Once athletes have been identified they are provided with the opportunity to realise their potential in high-quality talent development programs in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, and the National Talent Squad. More information on the NTID program is available at or by contacting Elissa Morley

13 Andrea Wood is coordinator of the Australian Para Canoe program, and has also made a conversion from K1 to C1 paddling herself. PADDLEABILITY FINDS IT s LEGS Following the successful launch of the ICF PaddleAbility program in 2009, the National Titles will include canoe sprint events over 200m for athletes with disabilities. The new name for these events is Para Canoeing. New para canoe competitor David Rolfe showing his strength at the Oceania Open in February PaddleAbility is the generic name of the new program adopted by the International Canoe Federation for athletes with physical disabilities competing in canoeing. Para Canoeing is the new name adopted by the ICF to align selective canoe sprint events more closely with the Paralympic movement was a ground-breaking year for the PaddleAbility program. The first international conference was held in Montreal, Canada. The first international competition was held in Milan, Italy. Canada included PaddleAbility races in the National Championship, for the second time. In 2009, athletes with physical disabilities competed in four full medal events at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships for the first time! The four events held over 200m were: K1 men 200, K1W 200, Mixed K2 200m, C2 200m. The next step, is to qualify for inclusion in the 2016 Paralympic Games by meeting the standards for inclusion set out by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The ICF will need to increase its participation to a minimum of 24 countries from 3 continents. The ICF aims to reach this target at the world championships in Poznan, Poland, next August. A second successful event in the 2010 World Championships will move canoeing one step closer to the 2016 Paralympics. Who can participate? PaddleAbility is for everyone no matter your disability! However, Para Canoeing is limited to a few events at this stage. At the 2010 National Championships, the Para Canoeing Events are Men and Women s V1 200m, Men and Women s K1 200m and Men s K2 200m. 14 GOOD LUCK I would like to wish all competitors the best for the National Championships. Race hard, and go for good times. In my role, I am always looking to the future, to improve our results internationally and have more Australians placing in finals at World Championships. Now is the time to race hard and show us what you ve got, and also what you ve got the potential to do. Good luck!
