SFP Methods Engage all suppliers in FIPs and AIPs As opposed to buy/don t buy Give suppliers training, tools, etc. per request Help convene mul-ple suppliers (if needed) Industry leads improvement projects SFP no longer leading FIPs (unless necessary) But, we advise and engage the supply chain 6
Convening Suppliers SFP holds regional roundtables to review source fisheries, opportuni-es for improvement, and funding mechanisms: NW Atlan-c cod (US/Canada) Held each year during Boston Seafood Expo North Sea whitefish Held annually in the UK since 2012 South American whitefish First one held last week in Vigo, Spain (ader Conxemar) Russian Far East whitefish 7

Scope of SFP s Whitefish Work (68 stocks) Focusing on high/medium- risk fisheries Stocks with MSC cer-fica-on Stocks with FIPs Stocks with no MSC or FIPs 10
34 stocks with no FIPs or MSC Priority is to get FIPs started. Some covered by exis-ng regional roundtables: 13 in the NW Atlan-c Roundtable 2 in the North Sea Roundtable 2 in the South American Roundtable Recommenda?on: Par-cipate in relevant supplier roundtables to help launch FIPs. 11
17 stocks with no FIPs, MSC, or Roundtable 13 NE Atlan-c fisheries 4 cod (W. Bal-c, Greenland, Norwegian coastal, W of Scotland) 9 others (eg, European hake, Faroese haddock/ saithe, Icelandic saithe, W of Scotland haddock) Ques?ons: Do we expand the North Sea Roundtable to include these? Or create a new roundtable? 4: Namibian hake, 3 small fisheries in NZ and AK 12
Now looking at FIP ra-ngs 13
Why FIP progress ra-ngs? It s no longer enough for a fishery to simply be in a FIP. It s no longer enough to know what FIP Stage a FIP has reached in its history. Observers need to know whether that FIP is delivering con?nuous improvement over -me. 14
What is SFP s FIP ra-ng system? Quick reference to how much progress is being made in a public FIP and how fast. A FIP s ra-ng is very -me sensi-ve. A piece of informa-on for stakeholders to help with their decisions about whether to: support a par-cular FIP, provide addi-onal pressure or resources, change strategy, etc. 15
What SFP s FIP ra-ng system is not? A FIP standard. Though, this may be useful/needed in the near future. A prescrip-on of buy/don t buy. Users should combine results with other key factors, and develop rules/policies for how to respond. 16
FIP Progress Ra-ngs Negligible progress: no measureable improvement to date Some past progress: measurable improvement, but not within the last two years Some recent progress: measurable improvement within last two years 17
FIP Progress Ra-ngs (cont d) Good progress: measurable improvement within the last two years AND has a public workplan AND has carried out a public workplan ac-vity in the last 12 months ExcepDonal progress: measurable improvement within the last 12 months AND has a detailed workplan that addresses all known weaknesses in the fishery 18
Defining Improvement In technical terms.this is a FIP Stage 4 or 5 result In layman s terms.this is, for example: An improved management plan adopted Managers following scien-fic advice for the first -me Using a new gear type that has less impact on the ecosystem Increase in abundance of fish in the popula-on Protec-on of bopom habitat 19
Whitefish FIP progress radngs Excep-onal Good Some recent Some past Negligible (as of 10 Oct 2013) 20
Actual ra-ngs of Whitefish FIPs (as of 10 Oct 2013) Exceptional progress (A) Barents cod/haddock* E Baltic cod* Chilean Common Hake Peruvian Hake Argentine hoki* Good Progress (B) Chilean Southern Hake Some recent progress (C) Argentine Hake Argentine- Uruguayan Hake Some past progress (D) Russian pollock SOO* Russian pollock WBS Chilean Hoki Negligible progress (E) Russian cod Japanese pollock North Sea cod *FIP now progressing improvements through MSC program 21
SFP FIP Progress Ra-ngs Rollout Ra-ngs methodology is currently out for external consulta-on. We will send you the drad document, please comment. Once finalized, we will make it public and start showing actual FIP ra-ngs on FishSource.com. Star-ng with SFP- affiliated FIPs. Then ader a few month grace period, we ll begin repor-ng ra-ngs for FIPs run by others. 22
Over to priority fisheries 23
Priority Fisheries Russian pollock: Sea of Okhotsk Receives a low FIP ra-ng because ader leadership was transi-oned from SFP to industry, repor-ng has been poor. Now in the MSC process to close out condi-ons with annual audit reports posted publicly. Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Priori-ze improved public disclosure of stock assessment informa-on; and Communicate to the client group to close out the rest of the condi-ons on target. Join the Russian Far East Whitefish Roundtable. 24
Priority Fisheries Russian pollock: West Bering Sea Not as far along as the Sea of Okhotsk fishery, apen-on should be expanded to include the West Bering Sea stock. Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Priori-ze improved public disclosure of stock assessment informa-on; and Communicate to the client group to get to the level of MSC cer-fica-on and then to an uncondi-onal pass. Join the Russian Far East Whitefish Roundtable. 25
Pacific Russian cod Priority Fisheries Young FIP that has shown leadership and drive by industry. Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Join the FIP (contact the Russian Longline Fishery Associa-on), or the Russian Far East Whitefish Roundtable (contact SFP). Communicate the need for faster progress on making improvements (as outlined in the FIP workplan). 26
Japanese Pollock Priority Fisheries SFP and industry sporadically working on improvements. SFP recently hired a Japan coordinator in Tokyo. Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Iden-fy an industry leader for the FIP. Communicate the need for faster progress on making improvements. 27
Priority Fisheries Alaska (East Bering Sea) fisheries Protec-on of the canyons is priority for ac-vist NGOs. In June, managers decided to explore regulatory op-ons for benthic protec-on and new research. Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Monitor Council process to make sure progress is maintained. If progress is not sufficient, communicate concerns to the Council and consider interim measures. 28
Priority Fisheries South American Whitefish All fisheries have significant issues, most red- rated. First roundtable targeted Spanish buyers. Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Request supply chain to lead FIPs (including repor-ng publicly). SFP sister NGO, CeDePesca available to help. Join the South America Whitefish Roundtable. 29
Priority Fisheries (with no FIP/MSC) Buyers currently sourcing from or planning to do so, ask suppliers ASAP to: Request supply chain to lead FIPs (including repor-ng publicly). Explore how best to structure roundtables to encourage FIPs. Eg, Namibian hake SFP has been approached by several companies looking to have a FIP started. Par-cipated in mee-ngs with the Namibian industry. No FIP has materialized to date. 30
Opportuni-es Start a FIP? Join a regional roundtable? Send a message down the supply chain asking for improvements in a specific fishery? Explore mechanisms for funding improvements? 31
Thank you for your apen-on 32
