3 MARATHON SERIES INFORMATION The Marathon Series is organised by the West Australian Marathon Canoe Racing Technical Committee (WAMCRTC) which is a subcommittee of the Paddle WA Board. DIVISION SET UP : The Series will be run as in previous years, using a grading system for all races, except the 10km Championships, the State Marathon Championships and Special Events. Paddlers will compete directly with other paddlers of similar speed regardless of craft, age or gender; The Division format simplifies registration and presentations at the finish of each event. At the start of the season, paddlers are ranked Fastest to Slowest by speed based on the previous season s results. Full Length Course Division 1 top 25% of paddlers Division 2 next 25% of paddlers Division 3 next 25% of paddlers Division 4 next 25% of paddler Shorter Courses Division 5 Short/Junior Course Paddlers Division 6 Novice Paddlers, Any age group Division 6 Guppy U12, Division 7 Guppy U10 Team Boat Divisions will be set up only when there are sufficient (minimum 4 craft) entries to make competitive Groups. Grading Doubles, K3s or K4s within the Divisions allows paddlers to learn to wash ride faster craft. Paddlers of unknown ranking will be started in Division 2 unless otherwise advised by the Race Director. Moving between Divisions Paddlers will have their Division changed throughout the season at the discretion of the Technical Committee. ELIGIBILITY The Paddle WA Marathon Series is open to all members of International Canoe Federation (ICF)/Australian Canoeing Inc. (AC)/Paddle Western Australia Inc. affiliated clubs. Paddlers who are not members of a Paddle WA affiliated club are most welcome and invited to compete in all but National or International Championship races. 4 ENTRY PROCEDURE Entries will be completed in the Webscorer registration pages posted on Facebook and CWA Website Season Prepaid members have a separate entry line at no cost. On-line Entry will allow paddlers to be graded into Divisions according their average pace (mins/km) of previous races during the season and will also allow the formation of Team Boat divisions when four or more craft register and constitute a competitive class. Guppy Paddlers that are not members of an Affiliated Paddle WA Club must nominate an INDIVIDUAL to be their on-thewater escort on their entry. Late Entries Late entries will not normally be accepted on the day, late entries may be permitted online [at additional cost] if race director permits. Paddlers must provide the following: FULL NAME, CLUB, Year of Birth, CRAFT TYPE and GENDER of paddler/s and an EMERGENCY CONTACT name and phone number which will be answered on the day. Note particularly which races require a car shuffle. Please aim to be at the venue at the start of registration to enable the briefing and race to commence on time. Age categories are listed on page 5 of this book. Guppy paddlers must be 12 years or younger, Juniors are all U18 and adults are all others. Non-members will be required to complete a declaration of fitness to compete for the season including their full name and address, contact details and emergency contact. AGE CATEGORIES Age categories for Marathon Racing in Western Australia are given on Page 5. Crews made up of competitors who individually qualify for different age categories shall compete in the category matching the age of the competitor closest to the open category following the same guidelines as those for amalgamation of classes. In the case of the crew consisting of junior and veteran competitors (and no open competitors) that crew shall compete in the open category. Australian Canoeing maintains a register of birth dates of competitors, to categorise paddlers for age category events. Extract of birth certificate, driver's licence or similar document is sufficient verification. If a competitor sets an age record while competing in a senior category, this will be recognised, provided that the competitor has initially been entered into that same senior age category. SHORT / JUNIOR COURSES Short course races are scheduled for paddlers who prefer to compete over a shorter distance. Courses are usually about 6 12 kilometres, and if applicable, are described in the briefing. No differentiation is made between age, genders and craft types, unless there are sufficient entries to make up a class of 3 4 paddlers of similar age and/or craft. Records are not maintained. Short course and junior course may be the same course. Juniors (U10 to U18) may paddle ICF recognised K1 or K2, Australian Canoeing recognised TK1, International Guppy K1 or K2 or Ocean Ski. GUPPY RACES Guppy races are held when suitable river conditions allow. Courses are between 2 and 7 kilometres and open to paddlers of Guppy kayaks who are 12 years of age or less. All Guppy race competitors must wear a correctly fitted PFD and have a parent or guardian s consent to race evidenced by signature at registration. Safety of these races is paramount and the race will not take place if there are insufficient parent or helper paddlers to escort the Guppies. Paddlers who prefer to paddle with a close Escort in K1s, TK1s or on skis are encouraged to do the U12 Guppy Course as a Novice paddler. For rescue efforts all Guppy Craft must have a bulkhead behind the cockpit or airbags installed. Suitably experienced social/non-racing paddlers are encouraged to nominate as escorts. Please collect your Paddle Escort vest at registration. All U12 Paddlers that are not members of an Affiliated Paddle WA Club must have an INDIVIDUAL on-the-water escort as specified on their entry who will be asked to stay with 30m of their child. WEARING OF LIFEJACKETS All Paddlers are advised to wear a suitable LIFEJACKET, especially if inexperienced or unsure of the conditions. All paddlers must be able to swim 50 metres in canoeing clothes and, if required, a LIFEJACKET. All JUNIOR participants under 14 years of age when racing in Divisions or participating in an U14 Class when racing in Age groups, MUST WEAR a LIFEJACKET while racing. A parent or guardian is required to consent to a Guppy or Junior entering the event and must be present during the event. Paddle WA Page 4 Marathon Handbook

The Marathon Series is designed to encourage paddlers to graduate to the recognised International CANOE AND KAYAK classes. The Australian version of the ICF rules allows for many boat types, the discretion of the discipline committee in the conduct of State and Club Marathons and to permit wash riding. Paddle WA conducts Marathons under the Australian Rules. You may wash ride any craft in the event passing you except in State Championships where you can only wash ride craft on your own start line. 7 . GUPPY COURSES Over the last few years we have had special courses for the U10s and U12 paddlers racing in Guppy kayaks or Novice paddlers in other craft. The Guppy kayaks are all very similar in size and shape with a bulkhead behind the seat. This makes them very easy to right by an escort after a capsize and the paddler can continue to participate in the event. These courses have parents, coaches and interested paddlers escorting them, at least 1 escort to 5 Guppy paddlers. All paddlers must wear a suitable PFD and be able to swim 50 metres dressed for canoeing. Guppy, Novice and U12 Paddlers that are not members of an Affiliated Paddle WA Club must have an INDIVIDUAL on-the-water escort as specified on their entry form who will be asked to stay with 30m of their child. 9 WA CANOE MARATHON Season Thank You The Paddle W.A. Marathon Technical Committee wishes to recognise the support throughout the previous season with race notifications and reports by TERRY BOLLAND and Canoeing Down Under. It would not be possible to run these events without the willing help of the many volunteers. To those people on the registration tables, timing, turns, and escorting our sub-junior paddlers we all owe you a very BIG Thank You MARATHON TECHNICAL COMMITTEE The Committee consists of a Chairperson and at least four other positions filled by nominees approved by the Board of Paddle WA Inc. Expressions of interest are invited for available positions to be finalised by June for the next series that starts in October. Each position is generally held for 2 years with half the Committee standing down each year. Any interested person is able to attend Committee meetings, simply ask to be informed when the next meeting is held. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Technical Committee contact a Committee person so you can gain experience during this series. "Each paddler has a personal duty of care to themselves and fellow canoeists. Yes, canoeing does have a % of danger. You, the paddler, should personally assess the race you are about to take part in and know that you are able to get yourself to safety. Know your boundaries in all conditions and do not depend on race officials. Assist fellow paddlers and remember common sense prevails at all times." Submitted by the Marathon Technical Committee Chairman ( ), source unknown. Paddle WA Page 9 Marathon Handbook
