2 KERN 2005 U.S. RIVER SLALOMFESTIVAL NATIONALS AND PAN AMERICAN A celebration SLALOM of whitewater CHAMPIONSHIPS AT MIRACLE Hosted by Kern HOT ValleySPRINGS River Council ARE A TRIUMPH AT THE KERN RIVER Last August over a 100 athletes from the U.S. and the various North, Central and South American countries came to the Miracle Hot Springs Slalom course for the 2005 TRIPLETAZO (a Spanish basebal term meaning triple play ), a series of national and international slalom races: U.S. Whitewater Slalom Nationals, Pan American Slalom Championship and the newest international races: America s Slalom Open. For the week prior to the events, the athletes arrived at the Kern, amazed at the high-water conditions still occurring on the Lower Kern. Because of the high-snow winter of the , the flow at Miracle was fluctuating between cfs. The flow at Miracle was quite fast and pushy at this level, requiring the athletes to use all their whitewater skills at slalom paddling. By the start of the four days of racing, the flow had dropped to between 1800 and 1900 cfs, which was a bit more user friendly. However, the international team of course designers added to the challenge of the fast water by creating some very unique course designs. For each day of racing, they created a course more difficult than the previous day, which was proper for this level of racing. The races turned out to be exciting and nerve-wracking for the athletes and the spectators alike. By the fourth day of racing, fatigue was obvious, but none of them let up and continued paddling at their best. When the races were done, The U.S. team ended up winning gold in K1W and C1, while the Canadian team took gold in K1 Men and C2. The other team medals went to the Brazilian team and the Chilean team. For the U.S. Nationals, Gold meals went to Brett Heyl (K1 Men), Jamie Tidmore (K1 Women), Ryan Bahn (C1) and Mark Poindexter / Ben Kvanli (C2). The final reports issued after the race from COPAC (Coalition of Pan American Canoeists), ICF and USA Canoe/Kayak rated the 2005 Pan American Championships and the 2005 U.S. Slalom Nationals as outstanding and highly successful. They also gave high ratings and expressed their gratitude for all the hard work done by the local organizing committee, which consisted of KVRC, the Kern Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, Thomas Refuse and many other dedicated individuals who put in many hours and days of hard work to bring this event to the level of success that was achieved. Thanks to all of you!!! * * * PREMIER SPONSOR * * * OF THE KERN RIVER FESTIVAL AND THE SIERRA CUP SERIES 2

The Sierra Cup Slalom series is open to any paddler who participates in two or more slalom races from the above listed series. 2. A paddlers race results (place) is used to compute total points. 3. Points are accumulated by class (K1, K1W, C1, C2, OC1, etc) for each competitor. A paddler may earn points in more than one class; however, points are accumulated by class only. In the final tally, a boater may only place in one of the ten top places. 4. Cup races generally follow ICF slalom rules for penalties. Each local organization hosting an event can determine the manner in which their race is run and scored; i.e. best of two runs or combined total. 5. In the event of a tie, the paddler who attended the most races is placed higher. If there is still a tie, the paddler competing in the larger class is placed higher. 6. Even though paddlers who place first in their class generaly move up to the next class, there is no oficial rule regarding this. However, for Sierra Cup results, if a boater places first in any class and does not move up to the next class in subsequent races, their points will still be tallied with the higher level class that they should have moved into The maximum number of races to be used for final calculations will be six races. I.e., the lowest score of one race will be dropped if attending seven races. 8. The Sierra Cup organizers have final say in all aspect of the Series regarding tabulation of points and the rankings of the participants. Their decisions are final. Points: 1 st place 20 points 6 th Place 10 points 2 nd place 18 7 th Place 8 3 rd place 16 8 th Place 6 4 th place 14 9 th Place 4 5 th place th Place 2 Everyone who enters receives a minimum of 1 point Percentage points are added to each score based on size of class. For classes less than 3 in size and for the last person in each class a percentage calculation adjustment will be used, their time vs the best time in their gender (less than 3) or of their own class (last person to next to last). There is no charge for entering the Sierra Cup Series. Awards are given at the following Kern River Festival.
