Even so, the kayak outings have had some of their biggest attendance and have ventured to a new waterway on one of their paddles! And we even had the first easy hike of the season. Our Summer Picnic Meeting will be at Kingston Point Beach on Tuesday August 22 nd at 6 PM. The club provides burgers and dogs. Just bring an appetizer, side dish or a dessert to share and a beverage to drink. What a great way to enjoy your dinner while looking out at the Hudson River and socializing with other club members! The bi-monthly meetings at Tony s Pizzeria have been going well. We are enjoying the better lighting and space that Tony s provides. There are great prices on beverages and the Bar Pies are getting great reviews too! There are still some weekends that need some hikes planned and hike leaders also. By the time the September newsletter is ready to print, we hope to have a full hiking schedule ready to go. Please volunteer to lead a hike for the club. Have a great August! Trip leader: Rudy Firmbach, Jr RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary Hike Report By Jean Pavone On July 9 th six Trailsweepers headed into the RamsHorn Livingston Sanctuary on foot. Our plan was to enjoy the sights and sounds of the sanctuary and meet up with the Trailsweepers kayakers who were paddling into the sanctuary from the Hudson River. About 20 minutes after we started, I received a call from the kayak co-trip leader Yvonne Baker. They were at the mouth of the RamsHorn Creek. Even though it was low tide, they were going to attempt the paddle up the creek into the sanctuary. As we came upon the 28-foot bird observation tower, we decided to wait to climb it on our way out, and continued on to meet up with the kayakers. We reached the docking area inside the sanctuary and waited about 10 minutes. Then, one by one, the kayakers appeared! 19 Trailsweepers made it into the sanctuary docking area! It really was a sight to see. Some of the paddlers got out to stretch their legs, and we all visited for a while. Then the paddlers returned to their kayaks and headed back out to the Hudson River and we continued our hike through a beautiful hardwood forest. The wildflowers we saw were in full bloom. We briefly stopped at an observation deck overlooking the wildlife marsh area and then on to climb the 28- foot observation tower on the far side of the marsh. The sanctuary is an impressive sight from high above! After our descent from the tower, we headed back to the parking lot. The hikers and kayakers met up again for food and beverages at the Port of Call Restaurant, which was very close to both our starting points. 22 TSSC Members took over the upper deck at the restaurant! What a great day! I hope we can plan more club outings like this. Thank you to everyone who participated. Jean

Oct 1 2:00 PM 11:00 AM Kingston Point Beach, Kingston Beach Picnic Meeting Lake George--Overnight Beacon to Bannerman s Island Beacon kayak boat launch Bring chair and food. See Note below. Registration needed. Year-end picnic. We will have a picnic at Beacon Boat Launch site for kayaks will provide hamburgers etc. Bring drinks, snacks, and chair. Note: Overnight at Lake George Launch from mainland; paddle to state owned island and camp at a NYS campsite. We will have to make a reservation; therefore, we need a head count of people seriously interested. Please contact Yvonne for more details and let her know if you are coming. Must bring camping equipment, food, etc. and carry everything in the kayak. If you have questions, please contact Yvonne at or Kayak John at See you on the water!!! BREACHING THE DAM! By Kayak John July 9 was another beautiful day for kayaking. 23 boats took part in the Ramshorn Preserve trip; all participants launched from Dutchman s Landing in Catskill at the scheduled time. There were several non-member participants; however, the regulars were the majority. As we all paddled south, I was the last man to leave the dock and quickly caught up to the pack. However, the participants were all stretched out along the Hudson River. I quickly realized that not everyone knew where they were going and many out-front people overshot the entrance to the preserve and just kept going south! With some whistles, the bulk of the crowd realized they had to turn north again and follow my lead to the entrance. The tide was low and we weren t sure that the preserve would be navigable. We had Plan B ready; however, there was just enough water to make it up the creek with a paddle, so we stuck to plan A! We were going along just fine meandering the preserve; looking for wild life. The one character I saw was a large snapping turtle trying to get out of our way; it slowly entered the water from the bank and just admired the kayaks slipping by! As we approached the dead end, I noticed a beaver dam all across the creek making it rather difficult to continue. Yvonne and I decided to dismantle part of the dam so that we can navigate towards the end point. We managed to create a two-foot opening which allowed all the kayaks to slip through. One of the participants stated that she saw the beaver who created the dam give us the finger for destroying his beautiful build!! Yes, life can be tough at times! (Continued on next page)

5 Ride/Run/Walk for Cancer Care Sunday Morning, September 17 th Mark your Calendar Now! Join TSSC s team as a rider, runner, or walker OR donate to our team! As team captain, I am setting a fundraising goal of $1000 this year and hope to have at least ten official team participants. To join our team or to donate, go to BikeForCancer.org and register as a participant under our team or donate to our team. More details about registering under our team will be in the Sept. newsletter. We will be riding again in memory of our good Trailsweepers friend, John Brooks, and all those other loved ones we have lost or who have battled cancer in their lives, including a former very involved TSSC member, Karen Martin, of whose death in June at her retired residence in Florida due to cancer the club recently learned about. Ride, Run, Walk or Volunteer at Bike For Cancer Care 2017 Registration is open! On Sunday, September 17, Bike for Cancer will offer three bike rides a 12-, 25- & 50 mile ride all traveling throughout Ulster County. View the routes here: BikeForCancer.org/the-ride/ Back again is the family friendly 5K Run/Walk. This non-competitive 5K will take place throughout the Stockade District in Uptown Kingston, and a Kids Fun Run will take place inside Dietz Stadium as part of the Bike for Cancer Care event. View the route here: BikeForCancer.org/the-5k/ For more details about the Bike for Cancer Care event: BikeForCancer.org Jackie Olivet Team Captain AdminVP@trailsweepers.org Join us for a beautiful day and a variety of routes for all skill levels. (Breaching Continued from page 2) Just as we negotiated the dam, another obstacle lurked around the corner; a log all the way across. I got out of the kayak (not that gracefully) to help most of the kayakers go over the jam. There were a few brave souls who found their own way of crossing. The end and turn around point was only another 100 feet away of the log jam. When we all arrived there, we were greeted by hikers who decided to hike the preserve as opposed to paddling it. The return trip was uneventful since the log jam was cleared up by Skip and the tide came in making the waterway a bit higher and a lot easier to navigate. Many of the kayakers and hikers decided to visit Port of Call restaurant for lunch. We all had a great time and good food. The next paddle is August 12 leaving from Germantown, NY at 10 am.

6 At its July meeting, the Board of Directors sanctioned 3 events, Rudy Firmbach s two ski trips in Dec. and Jan., the new Tanglewood outing held on Sunday, July 30 th, and the Kayak end of season picnic scheduled for Oct. 1 st. Please note that our updated sanction form has been added to our TSSC website for easier access for any event leader who needs one to fill out to bring to the Board for a sanction. You can also contact me for the form. If leading a club activity or event in the fall (or that you wish to be an official club activity) that will need a sanction by the Board, please fill out the form, let me know ahead, & get me the form so I can schedule it on our monthly agenda, and be mindful that out next several Board meetings are: August 8; September 12; & October 12 th. If unsure whether the activity or event you are scheduled to lead needs to be sanctioned, please contact me ASAP! For club activities and events to be advertised officially in the newsletter, they need to be sanctioned first. The Board also clarified the long standing policy of charging $5 extra to nonmembers for club parties/picnics,etc. so that in the future, event leaders will not be expected to charge $5 extra to nonmembers so long as they are a member of a club that belongs to the NJSC, i.e. Hudson Valley Ski Club members, or actually join our club. This clarification was put into effect to recognize the reciprocity HVSC has been showing to TSSC members for its ski trips when it has not charged us more for their trips and has not made us become members of their Board News By Jackie Olivet club to go on one of their trips, which more TSSC members have been doing in the last few years. The Board also designated the Administrative VP of the club, who chairs our Board, to be the official collector of our sign up sheets for members and nonmembers (inc. nonmember waivers) for our activities/events to be put with our other club documents, i.e. Board minutes. The Board will next meet Tuesday, August 8th and in addition to sanctioning any upcoming events and discussing whether to limit club meetings over the summer months of June, July, & August, to once a month starting next summer, it will be continuing to work, together with our Treasurer and all officers, on preparation of our full year budget to be voted on by the membership on October 24 th this year. If members of the club have questions, concerns, or specific proposals for our budget OR have opinions about limiting our club meetings over the summer to once a month, please come to our Board meetings or regular club meetings OR contact Board members or myself! Finally, Members consider being an event chair or helping out one of our current chairs to keep our longstanding events and activities going!! We can t expect the same members year in and year out to put in the extra time to chair/organize the same activities, which so many club members presumably want to continue, without help! Jackie, Admin VP/Chair
