This is used at crew loading to verify crew members eligibility to race. Site Facilities: Late changes to Crew Lists may be made at the Race Control tent. Only registered paddlers who hold a valid Paddler ID may be changed in to a specific Crew List. Note that all teams competing at the Nationals must be current affiliated financial members of NZDBA, and they must have competed in at least one NZDBA sanctioned regatta prior to the Nationals event. Teams will be allocated to a team space in an erected marquee for the duration of the event. Portaloos (portable toilets) will be positioned near the team tents and Crew Loading. Food vendors will also be on site and will include a coffee cart, cold drinks and cold and hot food. 5 Drummers: Race Start: Session 5 2,000 metre Standard Boat Turns Races Based on an aggregate of the 500m Heats and Finals results, crews will be seeded and will line up for a Standard Boat 2,000 metre Turns Race. Starting from in front of the Finish Tower, crews complete four legs of about 500 metres, including three left hand turns. Crews are allocated a start sequence in Flights of up to 12 boats each. Boats will move up to the line in pairs, and be given a count-down by the starter on a timed hooter, which goes off at 15-second intervals. Each crew has one 2,000 metre race, and Finish positions are based on their elapsed times. See Race Start for details. Prizegiving for races will be held at the Lake side at the end of each session (midday for Standard Boats etc). Prizegiving for the Junior (Schools) 2,000m Turns race will also be held at the Lake. Prizegiving for the Adults (Premier) 2,000m Turns race will be held at the After Match function. All crews must carry a drummer (i.e. "caller"). After the first 50 metres, the drummer must actively drum for the entire race. All boats are to come from crew loading to the starting area, highest lane first with Lane 1 being last to approach. Start Pontoons will be used at Nationals again this year. From the Transit Lane, boats turn right across the front of the Start Pontoons, come to a halt in your lane and back up until the Sweep is able to hold the boom arm with their right hand. The Race Starter will ask their paddlers to touch up or back off for alignment. Once the boats are in line, commands are: WE HAVE A LINE, YOU ARE UNDER STARTERS ORDERS ARE YOU READY? [followed by 1 to 5 second pause] Note: This allows a Drummer to ask for the race start to be paused if a crew is not ready by raising their hand immediately after the Are You Ready call from the starter. ATTENTION [followed by 1 to 5 second pause] Once the starter has called paddlers to Attention all paddlers must not paddle any further and the race can no longer be paused by a Drummer A Hooter Blast will signify the start of the race and paddlers may commence paddling. 2,000 Turns, lines of There will be a special briefing, immediately before the Page 5

6 Paddles: Location: racing 2,000m Turns race. It will cover the details, including: Each boat must come to a full stop and be stationary on the Start/Finish line, and will start at 15 second intervals. Rolling starts (for any race) are not permitted offenders will be penalised. Boats proceed up Lane 6, remembering to leave 6 metres clear water to the left, allowing boats to overtake. Go past the bottom 50m Flag or Marker Start a left-hand turn after the next flag (on your left). Follow the three marker buoys around the curve (28 metre radius/56 m diameter). Come back towards the Start/Finish Line, in Lane 1. Go past the bottom 50m Flag or Marker Start a second left-hand turn after the next flag (on your left, near the Finish Line Tower). Continue the left-hand turn outside the marker buoys that is, across/around Lanes 2, 3, 4 and 5. Proceed up Lane 6 again remembering to leave 6 metres clear water to the left to allow faster boats to overtake. Go past the top 50m Flag or Marker again Complete a 3 rd and final turn around the turn marker buoys At a safe distance after the last turn, boats may then come into the race lanes to the finish line or can stay in Lane 1 all the way down The finish line is the same as that used for the 200m and 500m races. Teams provide their own paddles. IDBF specifications 202a (wood, fibre-glass or carbon fibre) paddles are mandatory. Some spare sets may be available with prior arrangement please contact us at nationals@nzdba.co.nz to arrange this. This year the Nationals regatta is being held at Lake Hood, 10 km south east of Ashburton. Transport to and from the event from your home locations is an individual/ team responsibility. The turnoff to the lake (in Tinwald, a southern suburb of Ashburton) is about 50 minutes drive from Christchurch Airport. See below for maps. Page 6

7 The drive to Lake Hood is approximately 91.3 km from Christchurch Airport. Head toward the city on Memorial Ave, and at the roundabout, turn right onto Russley Rd (which is SH1). Continue (along Masham Rd and Carmen Rd) to Hornby, and then turn right at the lights onto Main South Rd. Continue through Templeton, past Rolleston and through Rakaia to Ashburton (about 86 km). Drive through Ashburton (West St is a bypass of the main retail area) and across the Ashburton River bridge. Drive about 2 km through Tinwald, and turn left at Grahams Rd. Drive about 4 km to Stranges Rd which is the main entrance to Lake Hood. Note that this year, the road to the northern end of Lake Hood is much more direct from Stranges Road it sweeps around to the left past the big Lake Hood sign and past the new canals and minilakes. The road comes out near the Lake House restaurant, then follow the road left past the boat ramp to the Finish Line Tower. Categories/ Criteria: All Standard Boat Crews will compete in the same heats (for 500m and 200m Sprints) and could also be in the same 2,000m Turns Race depending on flight seedings. Heat races and lanes are allocated pseudorandomly. Finals will then be allocated and raced by specific Grade and Division. Small Boat Crews will compete in Standard 20 man boats in heats where they may or may not race other crews in the same division. Finals will then be allocated and raced by specific Grade and Division. Please refer to the Race Draw for more details. Page 7

Your Small Boat Crew list can have a maximum of 14 crew members including drummer and sweep. All heats will be timed, and crews will be allocated to finals on the basis of accumulated heats results. That is, the times from the heats for each crew will be added together to determine which final each crew will compete in. That time also determines which lane they race in: Fastest qualifier takes the centre lane, Second fastest will be in the lane to their right, Third fastest on the left and so on. Page 8

9 ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Rules of Racing: Water Safety: Sweeps: First Aid: NZDBA National Championship titles: Trans-Tasman Championship titles: Note, generally there will be five boats/lanes per race, but the number of race lanes and their layout is at the discretion of the Race Director this may change dependant on the weather etc. The NZDBA National Championship regatta will adhere to the NZDBA Standard Rules of Racing. Sweeps are responsible for crew safety and must be familiar with NZDBA safety guidelines (attached). In particular, they must be familiar with the Capsize and man-overboard procedures. The Captain s Briefing will cover site-specific hazards and procedures. All Paddlers must be able to swim at least 50 metres. Safety Boats will be present on the course during races. Our safety protocol states that PFDs are compulsory and all Paddlers must wear approved style PFDs. As per Maritime Rule 91, we recommend Type 403 (NZS5823) buoyancy vest which provide flotation while allowing the wearer to escape a capsize. Teams that do not have their own set of team PFDs will be provided with one for the duration of a race which must then be returned to crew loading. Crews provide their own sweeps, who must hold a minimum Level Three (3) Sweep certification pursuant to the NZDBA Sweep Accreditation standard. If the Race Director decides that conditions warrant it, or a sweep is not coping with the conditions, the NZDBA may elect to provide an accredited replacement sweep. St Johns Ambulance personnel will be on duty throughout the event. Only NZ crews will compete for the 200m, 500m and 2,000m NZDBA National Championship titles. Medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) will be awarded to members of the NZ crews in the Grand finals of each division (Premier Mixed, Women, Open, BCS, Junior Women and so on) as long as there are enough crews in a grade (3 or more) to constitute a grade. In the case of the 2,000m Turns race there will not be a Grand final and medals will be awarded based on total time (including elapsed time and any time penalties) to complete the race. If Australian crews are entered (and we have Komodo Dragons here this year), they will compete against NZ crews for the 200m, 500m and 2,000m Trans-Tasman Championship titles. Medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) will be awarded to members of the crews in the Grand Page 9

10 Uniforms: Alcohol & Drugs: Clean-up: Security: Protests: Marshalling: Finals of each division as long as there are enough crews in a grade (3 or more) to constitute a grade and as long as at least one of the crews in a specific grade is Australian. Australian crews will race alongside NZ Crews in the heat races for the 200m Sprints and 500m Premier distance races. In the case of the 2,000m Turns race there will not be a Grand final and Australian crew will race alongside NZ crews in the flights. Trans-Tasman Medals will be awarded based on total time of all crews (including elapsed time and any time penalties) to complete the race. All crews must wear a distinguishable uniform during races (e.g. caps, T-shirts etc). NZ Dragons Boat Association has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to alcohol - alcohol and water sports do not mix. Moreover, NZDBA has a zero tolerance to drugs (except medically prescribed therapeutic drugs). World Anti- Doping Agency (WADA) rules apply see IDBF website. If any individual is caught consuming alcohol or drugs during the regatta the ENTIRE team could be disqualified from the competition at the discretion of the Race Director and the attending NZDBA board members. All teams are asked to clean up their Marquee area at the end of the each day. If your site is not cleaned to a satisfactory standard, you may be charged a clean-up fee. Teams are responsible for the security of their valuables. BE WARY: the lake is an open venue, so we recommended you leave any valuables at home and also allocate a person to mind your gear whilst you are racing. Must be lodged within 15 minutes in writing after the end of a race or after results have been published for said race with a fee of $100 (which is non-refundable, if the decision stands) to the Race Director. A number of race cameras will ensure NZDBA has a clear replay of each race and this footage may be used in the decision process regarding a protest. All teams and crews must make themselves aware of their race numbers and when they will therefore need to be at Crew Marshaling. Crews will then go through pre-race ID checks using Crew Lists provided by team managers and Photo ID Cards. Crew members are required to comply with all Page 10

11 Race Draw: Boats and Paddles: Safety: Shelter and Water: Sunscreen: End of Racing Pack Down: Post Event Celebration requests from Crew Marshaling people to ensure the quick and orderly processing of paddlers through marshaling. Once the pre-race checks are complete the marshals will direct the crews to their allocated boats for Crew Loading each crew must use the boat allocated to them. Crew members are required to comply with all requests from the Crew Loading people to ensure the quick, orderly and safe loading of crews into boats. If a crew does not arrive at Crew Marshaling in time for their allotted race, the race will start without them and that crew will not be provided with an alternative race. The Race Draw will be ed to team managers. Updates or corrections will be announced at the Pre- Race briefing. If there are significant changes, NZDBA may print revised versions. In any case, team managers and/or captains should listen for changes announced on the PA system or check in with Race Control regularly during the day to ensure no changes have been made that they are unaware of. The regatta is run using 3 flights of five IDBF certified "Champion" fibreglass Dragon Boats, supplied courtesy of Aoraki Dragon Boat Association. Note that two of those boats are the new version with paddler footrests. IDBF 202a spec paddles are mandatory. Paddlers with non-compliant paddles will be asked to replace them before being allowed to race. Random checks of paddle compliance will be done during crew marshalling. On-water safety will be provided by two chase boats. St John Ambulance will be in attendance on shore. Teams are reminded that any paddlers under the influence of alcohol will not be permitted to race. Protection (in the form of a tent or marquee) will be provided to all teams. Each team will have an area allocated to them for the duration of the event. Please look for your team label on the marquees/ tents. Drinking water will be provided in the Team Tent area and at marshalling. Please remember to drink lots of water. Ensure your team members all SLIP, SLOP, SLAP. Be Sun Smart! Once the last race on Saturday is over, we ask that teams remain behind to assist with the pack down of boats, equipment and some facilities of the event. The quicker we pack the site down the quicker we can all leave the site to head to the After Party or home. The venue is the Ashburton Hotel, Racecourse Road, Page 11

12 (The After Party) Ashburton - see map below. Dinner will not be provided at the After Party therefore teams will need to be responsible and ensure they have dinner prior to the event. The After Party begins at 7:00pm. EFTPOS is available at the bar. Tea and coffee will also be served. DJ Dave will play till midnight. Quiet areas are available on the lawn and other areas for those that want to brag about their achievements of the day! Enquiries to nationals@nzdba.co.nz or Page 12
