Christchurch Girls High School ROWING CLUB CGHS ROWERS TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE THEIR BEST AND EXCEED THEIR EXPECTATIONS

Welcome to the season We are looking forward to the season ahead and welcome back our return rowers and their families. We also extend a warm welcome to our novice rowers and their families. We hope you enjoy yourselves and look forward to seeing you at regattas and gatherings over the season. The recent seasons have seen CGHS Rowing numbers increasing year on year as the word gets out that rowing is a great sport to be involved in and CGHS Rowing is a club that is achieving some wonderful regatta results. It has been fantastic to see our girls developing their skills and enjoying this wonderful sport. We look forward to continuing in this fashion again this season. We are really pleased to have a committed and consistent coaching team and a group of very dedicated rowers. We are very pleased that Doug, Richard, Nat, and Jacinda, have returned to coach again. We will also be joined by Sophie, Dan, and Tommy, who will booster our coaching stocks and provide Doug with plenty of support. The senior camp will again this season be at Lake Ruataniwha and whole club will have its summer camp in the Nelson Lakes. We have a lot to look forward to in the season. Our Aim To provide a winning environment, resources and coaching that enables CGHS girls to give the sport of rowing their best, achieving beyond what they thought possible and developing life skills in areas : Performance and goal setting Fitness and nutrition Leadership and team work Personal organisation Self discipline Achievement Friendship Honour The CGHS rowing programme is athlete focused, coach directed and parent supported. Rowing is a fantastic sport that requires commitment both in time and effort. Commitment from the rowers to be at every training session and to work their best at every training session. Commitment from the coaches to set and implement the training programme. Commitment by the parents to ensure that their daughters get to training and are kept in good health and to provide support at regattas as house parents. 2

We achieve this by believing in three Core Values. RESPECT RESILIENCE RESPONSIBILITY Structure The CGHS Rowing Club is administered through the school and belongs to the Canterbury Rowing Club (CRC), is affiliated through them to the Canterbury Rowing Association (CRA) and New Zealand Rowing. Sarah Helmore is the CGHS Sport and Recreation Coordinator and is appointed by the school as the teacher in charge of rowing. CGHS rowing is run by a committee who comprise of parents, head coach and our teacher in charge: Role Name Contact details 1. 4 Our Head Coach is Doug Bull and his assistant coaches are: Richard Barnett Natalie Bocock Daniel Hickling Jacinda Bamford Sophie Jackson Tommy Reeves Emily Nicholson-Sell is our Club Captain and Georgia Scott and Sara Buerki as deputy Club Captains. Their roles include supervision of junior rowers at regattas, coordinating boat trailer loading, liaison with teacher in charge, collation of rowing results for assemblies and school news and supporting fundraising initiatives. We have a close affiliation with Christchurch Boys High School Rowing Club and will at times work in together by sharing resources and equipment, especially during regattas and training camps Communication Communication to all members of the club is via: - s to home will be sent, with training schedules and regatta information. Facebook - CGHS rowers group: Coaching updates and training schedules are posted on the Facebook page for the rowers. This is a closed group. Facebook - CGHS parents group: Parent updates for results and photos from the regattas. A great way for all the parents to keep in touch. This is a closed grouphttps:// Website - This is where parent communications is stored. These include news updates, regatta information, photos, resources and contact details. School rowing noticeboard - Notices and photos are placed on the rowing noticeboard opposite the gym entrance. Training The training timetable covers periods of 1-2 week. It is ed home and posted in the Facebook group. We try to have consistent training schedules but changes do happen and usually reflect school commitments, access to facilities such as the ergs and adverse weather. On water training will be mainly based on the Avon River at Kerrs Reach. There will also be regular land-based training sessions. Most of these sessions will be held at the CGHS gym, Atlas gym, or in Hagley Park. A swim safety test will take place after school at Jelly Park on mid-september All the girls can swim in their rowing clothes and tread water for up to 5 minutes. 4

It is extremely important that the girls come to all listed training sessions seven rowers do not make a crew of eight. If a rower is unable to attend a training session it is important that they inform their coach as soon as possible. Our coaches are fully supportive and understanding of academic priorities but do need the girls to keep them informed, especially around exam time. Training does continue over the summer holidays. There is a break over Christmas and then training re-starts on January 9 th Saturday at Kerrs Reach TBC Transport Cycling to and from Kerrs Reach is a mandatory part of training. It is important that your daughter has a bike in good working order. It is compulsory to wear a high viz vest and helmet when cycling to and from training. Our website has a recommended cycle route to and from Kerrs reach. All Novices will be guided over the safest cycle route by Senior Rowers mid September. This route has been researched and decided upon by the committee. A warning - the roads are rough and the girls may need to learn how to repair a puncture on their bikes. Transport to regattas is organised by the rowing committee. We will use a mix of school and rented vans, but sometimes need parent's vehicles for additional seating. We also plan to use buses for some of the regattas. Requests for help and planning information will be ed out before each regatta. Transport home from regattas is by the parents who attend to support the girls, so please make yourself available. Please note, parents providing transport to or back from regattas have not been police vetted, but do hold a current New Zealand Drivers License. Uniform and Clothing Our rowers are a team to be proud of and it is important that the girls look like a team and have the correct uniform while training and at regattas. Uniform costs are in addition to fees and items will not be supplied until they have been paid for. Uniform order forms are available on and available from Sarah Helmore in the PE office and must be ordered at the orientation evening at the start of the season. Additional Maadi Cup clothing is designed by the girls every year and is only required by those who attend. These carry our sponsors names and are coveted by all club members. 5

Weather at regattas can be extremely variable cold, windy and snowing on the hilltops one day and sunburn the next. The girls need sufficient clothing for cold and wet weather. Parent Commitment and Support CGHS has a wonderful parent support group and new families are warmly welcomed. There is great camaraderie as we all work together to provide the best environment for our daughters. All parents are welcome at all regattas and your daughter will appreciate your support. Parents play an essential role in a variety of areas such as fundraising, event coordinating, social activities, regattas, baking, and house parenting. Rowing is a challenging sport and physically your daughter will probably never have worked to this capacity before. The process of learning to row evolves over a number of seasons and there are new challenges each season. Please monitor your daughter s food and water intake, encourage plenty of rest but also take an interest in her training schedule and help her with time management. Please support the coaching decisions. All queries should be directed to our head coach (Doug Bull) or if further action is required please direct this to the teacher in charge (Sarah Helmore). 6

Cost All rowers will pay a fixed fee which will cover the costs of coaching, equipment, travel, accommodation, food, race entries for all regattas up to and including the South Island Secondary Schools regatta. 8 Regattas and Camps Regattas run throughout the season. They are held at Kerrs Reach in Christchurch, Lake Ruataniwha (Twizel), Lake Hood (Ashburton). Maadi Cup for 2016/2017 is held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge. Lake Hood is a 90 minute drive from Christchurch, on the south side of Ashburton. Lake Ruataniwha is at Twizel is 3.5 hour drive from Christchurch with accommodation available in Twizel or Omarama and should be arranged ahead of time as this sells out during regattas. Lake Ruataniwha on the south side of Twizel and about a 5 minute drive from the town centre. Lake Karapiro is 10 minutes south of Cambridge, 45 minutes from Hamilton. Accommodation is scarce near the late and should be booked well in advance. At all regattas we will have our CGHS marquee set up at the side of the lake. The marquee is a great place for parents to get together and we welcome all friends and family members to come and support our rowers. Hot drinks are available along with our fresh baking to keep you refreshed during the day. We suggest you bring a chair, sunblock, warm clothing, binoculars and cameras. Twizel is great if you bring a bike, as you are able to cycle alongside the races from the 1000m mark to the finish. There is often time between your daughter s races which gives opportunity to explore the area. Regatta expectations 1. Crews: The girls will be told what boats and crews they are entered in during the week before the regatta. Often girls are in multiple crews and have a busy schedule during the days. 2. Schedule: The race schedule is usually available a day or two days before the regatta and the girls are usually entered in two or three races each. The girls will let you know their race times. All race times and crews are posted on the rowit ( Rowing completely weather dependent and in particular wind can alter plans throughout the day, we keep everyone informed of the race schedule and results on a white board in the marquee. Rowit is a great way to follow the girls activity if you are not able to attend the regatta. 3. Boat Park: This is where the boats are prepared for races, and it can be a frantic area of activity. We respectfully request that parents stay out of the boat park at all times. The girls will come to our marquee at various times during the day to eat, relax, and support other crews when they have time between races. 4. Food: Tea and coffee at the marquee is provided for all family and friends. Families are required to provide baking for each regatta to share with the girls and supporters. We have a BBQ that is available at all regattas and at Twizel we cook dinner for the girls evening meals. 5. BBQ dinner at Twizel in our marquee (usually between 5-6pm depending on what time racing finishes for the day). All rowers, coaches and parents eat together. All families are encouraged to attend the BBQ dinner and are expected to provide some food items that are available from the local supermarket. Please let a committee member know you would like to attend (for catering 8

purposes) so that a suitable salad can be advised. House parenting 1. At Twizel regattas we rent houses and we require parents to act as house parents. This involves looking after the girls in the Twizel houses, helping out with lunches in the marquee, and being flexible to cope with changing schedules brought about by fickle weather. Every family is required to be a house parent at least once during the season. 2. The club covers the cost of the house parent s food and accommodation. Both parents are welcome as house parents, but school policy does not allow fathers to house parent on their own. We do have some ability to accommodate other family members at a charge ($20 per night) but we need to know in advance who is coming to ensure we allocate enough space. All members of the CGHS Rowing Committee & Coaching Staff have undergone police vetting. We do wish to advise that our house parents will not have been police vetted. It is our policy that house parents must be either; a female and male couple, or a mother on her own. We do not permit a father on his own to house parent. 9

Camps CLUB CAMP: This season there will be one camp for the whole club, based at Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes from January 16-21st (the rowing fees include the cost of this camp) SENIOR CAMP: A selected group of seniors will also attend a camp in Twizel from the 12 th 15 th December. (there is an additional charge for the girls attending this extra camp) PRE-MAADI CAMP: Those girls selected to attend the National Secondary Schools Regatta, Maadi, will also attend a Pre-Maadi training camp in March. 11 Safety Cycling to and from Training: Helmets and High Visibility vests must be worn at all times. All girls will abide by the road rules and in particular keep left and do not run the red lights. It is the responsibility of the parents and student to ensure the bike is roadworthy. All bikes should be checked and maintained on a regular basis. If riding in the dark for any reason, front and rear lights must be fitted and girls should wear suitable reflective clothing. On Water Training All girls are able to swim 100m and tread water in light clothing and shoes. There will be an annual swim test for this. All girls must inform the coach and teacher in charge if they have any health problems that may mean that they may be at risk if a boat capsized or they were thrown in the water. It is the responsibility of the rowers to ensure that they have the correct clothing in relation to the weather conditions. All crews must abide by the instructions of the person in charge of the boat at all times. That person will be the cox in the case of coxed crews and the stroke in coxless crews unless the coach appoints another person to be in charge of the boat. If a boat capsizes it will still float. The crew must stay with the boat then push the boat to shore whilst keeping everyone talking. The coxswain must wear a life jacket. A single sculler must not row alone. Another boat or coach must be in close proximity in case of a problem. The coxswain is responsible for ensuring that there are no collisions on the water. All girls are responsible for their own protection from the sun, ensuring they are hydrated and have a small first aid kit including Band-Aids and hand disinfectant. Due care must be taken at all times to ensure the safety of people when transferring boats from shed to water and return. 11

Toast and spreads (margarine/butter, jam, honey & marmite) bread and milk will be provided. o Please bring own snack food and water bottle Rowing Uniform: Racing row suit, Cap, warm polypro and jacket (either PE jacket or Rough trade) Casual mufti for wearing around the house (you must always be in rowing uniform at the lake) Toiletries Sunblock Alcohol gel Strapping tape Any medication they are on Ear-plugs 10mm SPANNER - all girls to have a 10mm spanner at all times (used for rigging boats) The Rowing club will provide: Dinner by the lake on Friday nights Light breakfast on Saturday and Sunday Lunch for Saturday and Sunday BBQ dinner on Saturday night Honey sandwiches, sticky buns, bananas, and chocolate milk at the boat-park for snacking on between races. Transport to and from the regatta Expectations: The girls will be helpful to house parents; doing dishes, ready for transport on time, handing in cell phones at night. The girls are at the regatta to compete and NOT to socialise Crew members will be at the boat park at least an hour before start time for each race Normal school rules apply 13

Please note Hours of work and preparation go into organising a trip away to a regatta. The girls are allocated to houses that reflect a mix of novices and return rowers at the first weekend regatta (to show them the ropes). From then on they will be housed with the crews they are rowing in. It is too hard to accommodate requests for girls to travel in certain vans and to be in certain houses. 14

Appendix 2 House Parenting Information What you need to bring: We ask that house parents bring their preferred breakfast cereal for their use. The girls bring whatever cereal/yoghurt they normally eat for breakfast. You will need to bring your own bedding/linen/towels/tea towels. It is useful to take a bath mat and couple of hand towels for the bathroom. The girls will bring sleeping bags and a towel for themselves. If you are bringing a younger sibling please bring a stretcher/airbed and bedding etc. for this child. A bed is not guaranteed Bringing a deck chair and clothes for all types of weather is recommended. There can be a lot of sitting around at the lake and it has been known to have 4 seasons in one day! What you need to do: You will have been ed a list of the rowers in your house, along with information about how they are being transported to and from Twizel. We aim to have the girls in Twizel by mid afternoon so they have time to rig boats and prepare for the regatta. Please arrive in Twizel by 6.30pm and go to Lindstrom Lodge (which is part of the rowing complex at Lake Ruataniwha) to collect the key to the house and the girls staying in your house. The girls will have eaten their evening meal at Lindstrom Lodge. You will be given a pack of basic supplies. If you run short of any items please let a committee member know over the weekend. If there is toilet paper leftover, we leave it at the house. If there is bread or milk left over please dispose of it or take it home with you. Phones are to be collected from the girls by 9.30pm and held by the house parent each night (returned in the morning). We really encourage that phones are collected as the girls are sharing rooms and phones can be disruptive. The girls really need their sleep during regattas. One parent in each house must stay alcohol free The coaches will inform the girls in the evening what time they need to be at the lake in the morning. The girls are encouraged to be responsible for getting themselves up on time, having a nutritious breakfast and packing their bag for each day at the lake. Girls with very early starts are usually collected by the coaches and taken to the lake. You may be required to transport some of the girls to the lake and back. Due to the early start for most girls you may find that you are left to wash/dry the breakfast dishes (the girls however should leave them stacked tidily on the bench). Lunch is provided at the lake for the girls and the house parents (bread buns with salad fillings and fruit). When you are at the lake you may be needed to help with food preparation. Saturday night dinner we all eat together in the marque at the lake. The dinner is held at the end of the racing (usually before 6pm) and the girls stay at the lake until they have eaten. We ask for house 15

parents to bring a salad that will cater for at least 10 people please. Most house parents duck back to the house (in between their daughter s races) at some stage to prepare this. The club provides the meat and it is cooked nice and slowly all day in the BBQ at the marquee. It may be a good idea to bring a bowl and salad servers from your home in Christchurch (some of the baches are not well equipped). Once the meal is over, the girls are keen to get home to shower, prepare for the next day and have an early night. We like the girls to stay at their house once they have left the lake.they are not to walk the streets of Twizel, go visiting or to entertain rowers from other schools. Sunday morning the girls will be at the lake again early, taking all of their belongings with them. We will have a tarpaulin behind the marque for the girls gear to be stored during the day. The girls are required to clean out their bedrooms. This is when you are asked to clean the house so that it is left in the state that you found it. This will include: cleaning bathroom & toilet, vacuuming, washing floor if necessary and straightening duvets/cushions etc. We have a good reputation with the house owners and are keen to maintain this. Rubbish Twizel has recently started a new collection system and each owner has differing requests re rubbish please ask a committee member for info on your house. May pay to take a few supermarket/rubbish bags with you just in case. Key to be returned to committee member by midday please. Tips: We encourage the girls to keep the house shoe free (makes for less mess to clean up on Sunday). We will try and allocate two experienced rowers to each house. These girls will be well aware of what needs to be done so please just ask them if in doubt. There will be a white board in the Marquee with phone numbers and updated information weather and plans do change. 16

Appendix 3 Regatta Crew Selection The early season regattas allow the girls to gain experience racing, try different rower combinations and different types of boats. The South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) regatta is the final regatta that we enter as a whole club. This will be held in Twizel at Lake Ruataniwha on March This is a very important regatta for our club as it is a competitive regatta, an opportunity to meet personal goals and for many of our rowers will complete their season. Following the SISS regatta a team will be selected to represent CGHS at the National Secondary Schools Competition. This is the Maadi Cup regatta and is being held at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge from March 25 - April 2, in CGHS Crew Selection Policy Selections will be made by the CGHS head coach, in consultation with all other coaches, in an honest and full attempt to boat the fastest crews at the SISS and NZSS regattas. A number of criteria will be applied to select these crews. This list includes, but is not limited to: Seat-racing Ergometer Scores (2km and any other tests deemed relevant) Attitude to training and racing Commitment to training and racing Training Logistics Factors relevant to crew combinations including but not limited to physical compatibility, technical compatibility and harmony SISS Selection Criteria All club members will attend and compete at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships to be held at Lake Ruataniwha. NZSS Selection Criteria (Maadi) A crew will be selected for the NZSS regatta if the head coach, in consultation with all coaches, believes the crew has the ability to: Qualify for the relevant A-final. A number of factors will be taken into consideration and these include: Prognostics achieved with reference to previous NZSS times 17

Performance with respect to competitors Coaches impressions of a crew s potential Ultimate discretion regarding attendance at the NZSS regatta lies with the head coach. 18
