WELCOME TO THE ROWING SEASON We are looking forward to the season ahead and welcome back our return rowers and their families. We also extend a warm welcome to our novice rowers and their families. We hope you enjoy yourselves and look forward to seeing you at regattas and gatherings over the season We are really pleased to introduce our new head coach, David Lindstrom. David has an enormous amount of coaching experience and was a NZ Olympic Rower at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. He was a junior selector and convenor at Rowing NZ. We are lucky to have obtained his services and along with our returned coaches of Richard, Dave, Jacinda and Grace This year we will be doing things a little different and holding camps for the entire squad at our Lodge at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel. Traditionally we have held separate camps for our return and senior rowers, but our coach works to an inclusive structure, and the entire squad will be participating. WE HAVE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS SEASON! 3

OUR AIM To provide a winning environment, resources and coaching that enables the CGHS rowing girls to give the sport of rowing their best and achieve results beyond their personal expectations whilst developing life skills in the process. OUR CULTURE TEAM FIRST We always think how our actions will affect the team POSITIVE ATTITUDE Every day we bring the right attitude to training and race day COMMITMENT To training and each other, both on and off the water RESPECT We respect each other and our competitors TRUST We trust each other to put the team first FOR OUR CREW FOR OUR SCHOOL FOR OURSELVES 4

THE 3 C S Rowing is a fantastic sport that requires commitment in both time and effort Commitment from the rowers to be at every training session and to work their best at every training session Commitment from the coaches to set and implement a productive and inclusive training programme Commitment by the parents and care givers to ensure their daughters get to training and are kept in good health and to provide support at regattas as lodge parents and any other help that may be required during regattas. 5

STRUCTURE The CGHS Rowing Club is administered through the school and belongs to the Canterbury Rowing Club (CRC). It is affiliated through them to the Canterbury Rowing Association (CRA) and New Zealand Rowing Catherine McDermott is the CGHS teacher in charge (TIA) of rowing. She is the go between, support and number 1 contact for the girls and their whanau with any questions. CGHS Rowing is run by an enthusiastic committee comprising of parents, the head coach and Catherine (TIA) CHAIRMAN Julian Bowden julian.bowden@mainland.co.nz TREASURER Ian Watson ian.watson@craigsip.com SECRETARY David King daviejking@gmail.com ACCOMODATION James Hill james.hill@mpi.govt.nz TRANSPORT David Cody-Mandell & Johnny Chapman david.codym@designflow.co.nz jonathon.chapman@verkerks.co.nz FUNDRAISING Michaela Jamieson, Jodie White & Jackie Kitson grey.michaela@xtra.co.nz SPONSORSHIP Tania McLeod & Ian Watson tinky08@windowslive.com REGATTA SUPPORT Rob Morris, Aaron White & Grant Keenan rob@inovo.nz SCHOOL LIASON Catherine McDermott mdc@cghs.school.nz FOOD Karen Watson, Angela Cody-Mandell, Vivienne Wilson, Jackie Kitson & Katrina Keenan karen.ianwatson@vodafone.co.nz jackiekitson3@gmail.com Our head coach is David Lindstrom and his assistant coaches are: Richard Barnett David Hatton Jacinda Bamford Grace Shaw Eva Watson is our Club Captain and Sophie Bowden is the Deputy Club Captain. Their role is to supervise and support the junior rowers and novices at regattas, coordination of the boat trailer loading, liaise with Catherine (TIA), collate rowing results for assemblies and school news and support fundraising initiatives. We have a close affiliation with Christchurch Boys High School Rowing and at times will work together by sharing resources and equipment. This is a real advantage during regattas and training camps. 6

COMMUNICATION Communication to all members and parents of the club is via: Facebook s to a home address will be sent with training schedules and regatta information. Also requests for regatta help. CGHS Rowers Group: Coaching updates and training schedules are posted on the rowers Facebook page for the rowers. This is a closed group. CGHS Parents Group: Parent updates for results ad photos from the regattas. A great way to keep in touch if you can t make it and also communicating with other parents throughout the season. This is a closed group School Rowing Notice Board opposite the Gym entrance for notices and photo s TRAINING The training timetable covers periods of 1-2 weeks. It is ed home and posted on the Rowers Facebook page. We try to have consistent training schedules, but changes do happen and usually reflect school commitments, access to facilities (such as the ergs) and adverse weather conditions. On water training will be mainly based on the Avon River at Kerr s Reach. However, this season we hope to spend more time at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel. There will also be regular erg training throughout the season and also weight sessions at Atlas Gym in Sydenham. A swim safety test will take place at Jellie Park. A time will be advised at the beginning of the season. Al girls will be expected to tread water and swim in their rowing clothes for up to 5 minutes. 7

It is extremely important for the girls to come to ALL listed training sessions. This is a team sport and 7 rowers cannot make a crew of 8! If a rower is unable to attend a training session they MUST inform their coach as soon as possible Our coaches are fully supportive and understanding of academic priorities, especially around exam time. It is vital that the girls keep their coach informed. Training does continue throughout the summer holidays. There is a break over Christmas and then training will commence at Twizel for Camp #2 on 14 January 2109 TRANSPORT Cycling to and from Kerr s Reach is a mandatory part of training. It is important that your daughter has a bike in good working order. It is compulsory to wear a hi-vis vest and helmet when cycling to and from any training. There is a recommended cycle route to Kerr s Reach and all Novice Rowers will be guided on this route by the Senior Rowers. This route has been researched and decided on by the committee as the safest. It may be handy for the rowers to learn how to repair a puncture! Transport to the regatta s is organised by the committee. We use a mix of school and rented vans. When the entire crew travel a bus will be hired to get to regatta s and camps. Occasionally parent vehicles are required to make up additional seating required. Requests will be ed out before each regatta. Transport from the regatta s is by the parents who attend to support the girls. Please make yourself available for this. Please note, parents providing transport to or from any regatta s or camps must hold a current New Zealand Driver s License. It is not necessary to have drivers Police vetted. 8

UNIFORM & CLOTHING Our rowers are a team to be proud of and it is important that the girls look like a team and therefore have the correct uniform while training and at regatta s. Uniform costs are an addition to the Rowing fee s and items will not be supplied until they have been paid for. A list of uniform items and price will follow as a separate order form. Uniform orders are available from Catherine (TIC) and must be ordered at the start of the season during the Orientation night. Additional Maadi Cup clothing is designed by the Senior Girls every year and is only required by those attending the Maadi Cup. These carry our sponsors names and are coveted by all club members. Weather at Regatta s can be extremely variable, even for a summer sport. Cold and windy one day, and sun burning the next. The girls require sufficient clothing for cold and wet weather. PARENT COMMITMENT & SUPPORT CGHS has a wonderful parent support group and new families are warmly welcomed. There is great camaraderie as we all work together to provide the best environment for our daughters. All parents are welcome at all regatta s and your daughter will appreciate your support. Parents play an essential role in a variety of areas, such as fundraising, event coordinating, social activities and house parenting. Rowing is a challenging and physically demanding sport and the MOST important support you can give your daughter is encouragement for the entire season. Feed them, hydrate them, help with their time management and remember they will be tired, especially until their fitness improves. The positive change you will see in your daughter will be reward enough for the disruption your household will endure over the season. Please support the coaching decisions that are made. If there is an issue, all queries should be directed to the head coach (David Lindstrom), or if further action is required, please direct this to the club President (Julian Bowden) or Catherine McDermott (TIC) 9

COSTS All rowers will pay a fixed fee which will cover the costs of coaching, equipment, travel, accommodation, food, race entries for all regatta s up to, and including, the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta. Based on a rowing programme for the 2018/2019 season our fees will be: $3, for the entire season if paid in a lump sum by 31 October 2018 Fees can also be paid in 5 monthly instalments of $ on the 20 th of the month for October, November, December, January and February. In 2018/2019 the fee for a coxswain will be $ or 5 x $ instalments. Items not covered in the fees are: Club uniform and rowing suit Pre Maadi-Camp at Lake Ruataniwha Maadi Cup extra s, uniform, travel to Cambridge and accommodation. Payments can be made online to: CGHS Rowing Club Please reference your daughters SURNAME and what the payment is for Example: UNIFORM 10

FUNDRAISING & SPONSORSHIP To enable us to keep the Rowing fees down from season to season, we rely heavily on sponsorship and fundraising. We have 2 major fundraising activities throughout the season with a few smaller ones from season to season dependant on the families that are in our circle. CHEESE ROLLS The value of this fundraiser is that for a day of work we can generate about $5000 for the club. This is a great opportunity for the rowers to participate in an event, and along with parent help, it is a fun and productive day. Not to mention a very tasty result! OARSOME AFFAIR The Oarsome O Fare is an annual fundraising silent auction for twelve Christchurch rowing schools. This event is supported by and held at McKenzie and Willis. For $25, you get entry to the event and the ability to bid for auction items (from 5.30pm to 7.30pm) - there are many great bargains to be had! In addition, you get free finger food, wine and juice. Those who have attended in the past will testify that it is a great social occasion, as well as being a major fundraiser for CGHS Rowing. Michaela and Jody from the fundraising committee will be in touch in the New Year for donated goods that we can use in the silent auction. We generally exceed over $10k in funds from this evening, therefore making it a really important fundraiser for us. In November each rowing family will be given 2 tickets to purchase or on-sell to friends and acquaintances. Keep Friday 15 February clear on your calendar for this great event. SPONSORSHIP We also have the opportunity for businesses to support our club for a donation of $1000. We will put your company logo on one of our boats for the season. This is a great visual opportunity for your company as the girls row slowly on the side of the lake as they head to the start gate. A LOT of people will be standing lakeside! GRANTS We will also be applying to various organisations for grants to help with travel, boats and coaching. If you have any other ideas or wish to discuss sponsorship, please do not hesitate to contact Ian Watson or Tania McLeod 11

REGATTA S & CAMPS Regatta s run throughout the season. They are held at Kerr s Reach in Christchurch, Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel and Lake Hood in Ashburton. The Maadi Cup for the 2018/2019 season will be held at Lake Karapero in Cambridge. At all regatta s we will have our CGHS Marquee set up at the side of the lake. The marquee is a great place for parents to get together and we welcome all friends and family members to come and support our rowers. Hot drinks are available and fresh baking is always appreciated! We suggest you bring a chair, sun block, warm clothing and binoculars. There is often time between your daughter s races to explore the area. Unfortunately, bikes are no longer allowed along the last 1000m of the course for safety reasons. 12

REGATTA EXPECTATIONS Crews: The girls will be told what boat and crews they are entered in during the week before the regatta. Often girls are in multiple crews so will therefore have a busy schedule during race days. Schedule: the race schedule is usually available a day or two before the regatta and the girls are usually entered into 2 or 3 races each. The girls will let you know their race times. Rowing is completely weather dependant, with wind often altering race plans throughout the day. Everyone is kept informed and those not at the regatta should head to the Facebook page for updates. The schedule and results are updated on the white board in the Marquee. ROWIT is a great online format that is updated with race times, race activity and results Boat Park: This is where the boats are kept and preparation for races takes place. We respectfully ask that parents stay out of the boat park at all times. It is pretty frantic down there and the girls and coaches will be going through pre-race rituals. When the girls are free and ready to relax, they will make their way to the marque, so you will have a chance to see them on race day. Food: Tea and coffee is provided for family and friends at the marque. If families could please bring some baking to share with the girls and supporters. We have a BBQ that is available at all regattas and at Twizel we use this to cook dinner for the girls and supporters on the Saturday after racing finishes. BBQ Dinner: At Twizel regatta s we have a BBQ for the girls, coaches and supporters between 5pm 6pm, once racing finishes for the day. All families are encouraged to attend and therefore we please ask that you bring a salad to share. Please advise the committee that you will be attending for catering purposes. CGHS provide the meat and bread. 13

LODGE PARENTING At Twizel the club has developed a relationship with the local camping ground that allows us to be housed in one location, right by Lake Ruataniwha. This year will be the first time we have been able to locate our whole team in one venue and we are excited about the dynamics this will bring to the team. The new lodge will house up to 60 girls and 10 adults. This will be a new process for the coming season and we are sure it will simplify many logistical issues that we have experienced in the past. The club will call for volunteers to assist by staying at the lodge with the girls over the season. All members of the CGHS Rowing Committee and Coaching Staff have undergone Police vetting. We do wish to advise that parents staying at the lodge will not have to be police vetted, however it is our policy that parents must be a female on her own or a male and female couple. Males are unable to sleep in the same area of the Lodge as the girls. 14

CAMPS Camps this year will be for the entire club based at Lake Ruataniwha. The camp fees are included in the rowing fees for the 2018/2019 season. Closer to the time we will be asking parents to help with the camp. Pre-Maadi Camp is for those girls that have been selected to go to the National Secondary Schools Regatta - Maadi Cup. This camp will be held in March before the selected girls head to Cambridge for the Maadi Cup. The crew must keep talking to each other. The coxswain must wear a life jacket A single sculler must not row alone. Another boat or coach must be in close proximity in case of a problem. The coxswain is responsible for ensuring there are no collisions on the water. All girls are responsible for their own sun protection and keeping hydrated. A small first aid kit is recommended. 20 REGATTA CREW SELECTIONS The early season regattas allow the girls to gain experience racing, try different rower combinations and different types of boats. The South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) regatta is the final regatta that we enter as a whole club. This will be held in Twizel at Lake Ruataniwha on 7-10 March This is a very important regatta for our club as it is a competitive regatta, an opportunity to meet personal goals and for many of our rowers, they will complete their season. This season the squad selections will take place at 2 different times: The senior squad will be selected by the end of Term 3, based on attitude and potential as we target top 3 placings at Maadi Cup. Ongoing monitoring will take place during the season to ensure agreed targets and commitments are being met. Failure to meet these agreed commitments and targets could lead to squad changes. For the rest of the rowing team crews will be selected prior to the SISS regatta a team will be selected to represent CGHS at Maadi Cup. CGHS crew selection policy Selections will be made by the CGHS head coach, in consultation with all other coaches, in an honest and full attempt to boat the fastest crews at the SISS and NZSS regattas. A number of criteria will be applied to select these crews. This list includes, but is not limited to: Seat-racing Ergometer Scores (2km and any other tests deemed relevant) Attitude to training and racing Commitment to training and racing Training Logistics Factors relevant to crew combinations including but not limited to physical compatibility, technical compatibility and harmony 20

SISS Selection Criteria All club members will attend and compete at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships to be held at Lake Ruataniwha. NZSS Selection Criteria (Maadi) A crew will be selected for the NZSS regatta if the head coach, in consultation with all coaches, believes the crew has the ability to: Qualify for the relevant A-final. A number of factors will be taken into consideration and these include: Prognostics achieved with reference to previous NZSS times Performance with respect to competitors Coaches impressions of a crew s potential Ultimate discretion regarding attendance at the NZSS regatta lies with the head coach. 21
