We have finished our first semester strong and are looking forward to making further gains second semester. I can t cover everything but I want to hit some highlights. The change in PACK/FLEX (our intervention time) is showing positive results. After taking a first look at the data, our D s and F s are down from previous years. Our Drama club is putting on the musical The Sound of Music that runs Thursday through Sunday, February 5 th through the 7 th. If you have not attended a play in the past, I highly suggest you come check one out. Our students are amazing; from the set design and all the backstage workings to the acting, it is very impressive to see. The Tumwater School District is working in a partnership with the TOGETHER! organization to build a community schools model here within our district. We currently get support from Jennifer Gould, who assists us with getting additional community resources, working with students who are in need and generally supporting the school and our students. We feel fortunate to have Ms. Gould working with us and are excited about what she has already accomplished, as well as what is to come. Our Winter Sports season is coming to a close and we have seen positive results in our competitions from the rifle team, girls bowling, wrestling, and girls and boys basketball. Many teams are on the verge of making it to the post season and we are excited about the possibilities of having the opportunity to continue playing and showing the state what great teams we have here at BHHS. We have some important events on the calendar coming up, one of which is Senior Exit Interviews. This is a district requirement that all seniors must complete in order to graduate. The interviews will take place toward the end of March and it is a great opportunity to shine within our community, as every year I get feedback from community members about what outstanding students we have here at BHHS. If you are interested in assisting in this process, please get in touch with Ms. Susan Jones in our Career Center. Reminder: We do have a Booster Club and it is never too late to join! Our Booster Club is an active organization that has assisted the students within our school on numerous occasions and does so many great things for our school that I cannot list them all. We owe a great deal to the Booster Club and all they do for our students. The next Booster Club meeting is Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30 in the Staff Lounge I am interested in starting a Black Hills High School Hall of Fame. My idea is that the Hall of Fame would have at least 3 different halls. An Athletic Hall of Fame, an Arts Hall of Fame and a General Hall of Fame. If you are interested in any of these, please contact me as I am looking for interested people to help me get the Hall of Fame going. Last, I would like to pass along a message from the Administrative team here at Black Hills High School to you all. That message is THANK YOU! Thank you for your support, thank you for sending us your children - they truly are amazing - thank you for being involved as much as you can with your child s life, thank you for your feedback, both positive and negative it does help us improve in our jobs, and last - thank you for reading this letter! WINTER PARENT/STUDENT INFORMATION NIGHT Please join us for our winter parent/student information night on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30pm in the BHHS Performing Arts Center. There will be speakers on our Advanced Placement program, New Market Skills Center and Running Start. If your student is interested in any of these programs please plan on attending. Our counseling center staff will be in attendance for any other questions you may have. Hope to see you on the 11th. ATTENTION BASEBALL PLAYERS! If you have any remaining uniforms left over from last season, please turn them in ASAP to Mr. Farler. Reminder: Open Gym every Tuesday & Thursday night from 7:00pm-8:30pm gym space, batting cages, & weight room available. Hope to see you there, GO WOLVES! BOWLING Black Hills Bowling Team finished in 1st place in the Evergreen Conference. We sent 7 bowlers to the district Tournament on January 30th to compete to go onto State. 5 BLACK HILLS HIGH WOLF TRACKS PAGE 5 BLACK HILLS CHEER PERFORMS AT THE HOLIDAY BOWL Your Black Hills Cheerleaders were invited to perform in the halftime show at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. The girls worked hard during the month of December to learn the seven minute routine. They attended extra practices on top of their normal cheer responsibilities. Once in San Diego the girls worked with famous choreographers Many Moore, Dustin Philips and Lauren Froderman. During tryouts the night we arrived, only ten teams were selected for the stunting sequence and both of our stunt teams made the cut! As a result of their hard work, your team performed flawlessly during the halftime show! After an amazing experience performing at the Holiday Bowl it was time for some fun in sunny San Diego! We spent one day at Mission Beach and Belmont Amusement Park. The following day was spent at SeaWorld. DISNEYLAND was a surprise event to top off our fabulous trip! If you would like to be a part of this fabulous team, Cheer tryouts for the upcoming year are approaching! There will be a mandatory Parent Tryout Meeting Scheduled for March 26th. The meeting will be held in the Staff Lounge at BHHS from 6:00-7:00pm. Tryouts are the week before Spring Break (March 30th-April 2nd). We are looking for girls with lots of SCHOOL SPIRIT that are willing to WORK HARD and LEAD by example both at school and out in the community!

Black Hills High School Strength Training Opportunity Black Hills has a zero hour strength training opportunity for all 8 th 12 th grade students. The weight room is open from 6:40-7:00 A.M. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from January through the end of May. The program focuses primarily on Olympic core lifts, such as bench press, squat and power cleans, as well as auxiliary lifts using dumbbells, barbells and kettle bells. Students will be taught the proper technique and behavior for the weight room. The district does not provide transportation this early in the morning, so students and/or parents are responsible for getting them to the weight room. For the 8 th grade students who choose to participate, there will be bus transportation from the high school to the middle school. This is a great opportunity for students to be active, to get stronger and to jump start their day!

8 BLACK HILLS HIGH WOLF TRACKS PAGE 8 Black Hills High School Music and Theatre present the timeless classic, The Sound of Music. Featuring over 70 Black Hills students and also featuring two students from Michael T. Simmons, this production brings all your favorite songs and all the memorable characters featured in The Sound of Music to the Black Hills stage. Shows are January 29th, 30th and 31st and February 5th, 6th and 7th, all at 7 p.m. in the Black Hills PAC. Tickets are $7.00 for students and seniors and $10.00 for adults. Please call for more information. BLACK HILLS HIGH SCHOOL FASTPITCH ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR 2015 SEASON To get ready for the season, we are currently running Open Gyms on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of February at BHHS from 7PM-8:30PM. This is open to all TSD students K-12. You may utilize our gym space and equipment. The High School Fastpitch season starts on March 2nd. Please have your medical clearance and sports clearance done before the 2nd. You will also need to pay the $75 fee as well before this date. For parents of high school faspitch athletes, we will be meeting on February 19th at an Open Gym from 7PM- 7:45PM to go over the 2015 season. We will meet in the small gym on this date. This is important for all returning parents and new parents of our fastpitch program. Our calendar of events can be found on our BHHS Athletic Website, under Fastpitch. BHHS Fastpitch Clinic for 8-14 year olds There will be two clinic dates for students 8-14 years old on March 21st and March 28th. This clinic is a fundraiser for our program to earn money towards new uniforms. COMMUNITY MEMBERS NEEDED We are looking for community members to sit on our senior exit interviews that will be held March 17th 19th from 7:30 10:00. If you can help one two or three days, please contact Susan Jones at susan.jones@tumwater.k12.wa.us or at SENIORS AND PARENTS Senior Exit Interviews are scheduled for March 17 19th from 7:30am-10am. These are the only days we will schedule interviews. Signups will start after February 1st. 9 BLACK HILLS HIGH WOLF TRACKS PAGE 9 Answers to Your Attendance Questions Black Hills High School s website has our Attendance Policy and Procedures under the Families section. Answers to a few of the questions and procedures that are frequently asked are listed below. Because BHHS is a closed campus, if your student is not on campus from first bell to end of school bell, the Attendance Office needs parents/guardians to call to excuse. What is Period 8? When you receive a message from the auto dialer reporting an absence in 8 th period, this is the timeslot assigned to the 30-minute PACK time following second period, where your student goes for extra help in another subject, other than their second period class. It is a required class and attendance is taken. Students need to check in with the Pack teacher on their schedule to get permission to go to a different teacher than the teacher they are assigned to, or they will be marked absent. Absent in just one period on a certain date? If you receive the automated system informing you that your student was absent for a particular class, but you feel the absence is in error, please have your student contact the teacher directly to discuss the absence. The attendance office is unable to change the absence without the authorization from the teacher directly. Excuse an Absence Parents may call the Attendance Office to excuse your student s absence ( ). Unexcused absences are truancies, and students will receive consequences such as detention for tardies and unexcused absences. Early Dismissal Procedures When possible, parents can notify the attendance office in the morning (or leave a voic before school starts) when a student needs to leave early for an appointment. We do not call the classroom and need time to send a TA to class with the early dismissal note. Also, if your student is at lunch it is difficult to locate them as they can be in many different places during lunch. With the exception of students participating in Running Start and NMSC, any student who leaves campus during the school day (even if it is before school starts) must check out through the attendance office ( ). Students who do not properly check out will be marked truant from the classes missed and will be given the consequences noted in the Student Handbook on page 11, under Closed Campus. Attendance and Students 18+ Students who turn 18 still need to have the parent/guardian excuse their absence or tardy. We do not allow the student to excuse themselves.
