1 Stay young! Get involved! 42 TOURNAMENT SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER It s almost that time again! Our next TASCA 42 tournament will be held on Saturday September 19 (see page 6 for more info and an entry form). Coffee and Sign-in for the tournament will be from 8:30-9:30 AM and the gaming fun begins at 10:00. A stellar lunch will be served by Atria Senior Living, and we thank them so much for their support of TASCA. Thanks also go to Hembree Chiropractic for sponsoring this event, to a generous TASCA member for donating prize money, and to Coach s for donating door prizes. It s not too late for a few more sponsors to come onboard. If you know someone who runs a business and might be willing to donate prize money or door prizes for the event, let us know or have prospective sponsors contact us at (903) Come and participate in the tournament as well! BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS CONTINUE IN AUGUST We re so glad to report that ballroom dance classes, which started in June, will still be going strong this month! Hugh Wallace is featuring the Waltz as the new dance, and the Rumba for both beginners and advanced learners. In other words, even if you ve already learned the basics of the Rumba, it ll be a review and more practice; and if you don t know the Rumba, you will learn the basics. Lessons will continue to be taught on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. During each class meeting, Hugh devotes 45 minutes of instruction to each dance. The first Tuesday in August is the perfect time to mark your calendar to learn these priceless ballroom dances. The cost of the lessons are $5 per person. For more information or to let us know you d like to take the lessons, call the TASCA office at (903) GET READY FOR FIRST-THURSDAY COKE FLOATS! Take a walk down memory lane to the corner drugstore where there s a soda fountain inside that takes up one long wall. Are you picturing it? Do you remember it well? Checkerboard floor maybe? Rotating chrome seats at the counter? Malts, milkshakes, parfaits and...oh my! Coke Floats! If you liked them then, you ll like them now when our great friends at Waterton Health and Rehab start providing these timeless treats on the first Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Enjoy your complimentary Coke Float right here at TASCA while you play Pinochle, 42, Mah Jongg and Hand and Foot. Any questions? Didn t think so. See you at the soda fountain! Page 1

4 DAYS OF OUR LIVES: PROFILE OF THE MONTH Many will remember him from before TASCA was TASCA, when a group of folks some of whom helped to found TASCA got together to plan and hold regular ballroom dances. Others will remember him as a saxophone player in the Tyler Big Band at those dances. Carl Marsh was a charter members of TASCA, and an active member until he had a debilitating stroke in He passed away last month and will be greatly missed. Carl came from humble beginnings. His parents were share-croppers in and around Annona, Texas in Red River County, where Carl was born in 1927, the youngest child of four. They also worked in the Red River Arsenal during World War II, and Carl s father Ed got extra work smoothing out the unpaved roads in the little town after a rainstorm. Carl s parents didn t even have a house and farm of their of their own until all their children were grown. One might not expect that a young boy with many chores to do both before and after school would find the time to teach himself to read music and play the saxophone, but that is exactly what Carl did. In fact, he ordered his first sax from a Sears & Roebuck catalogue when he was a teenager, despite the fact that the school he attended in Avery, Texas didn t have a music program. He d saved up money for the sax doing odd jobs in his neighborhood, and taught himself to play, care for the sax and repair it when needed. As soon as he graduated from Avery High School, Carl was off to East Texas State Teachers College (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) where he completed a Bachelor of Music Education degree. It wasn t easy getting through college. He waited tables in a boarding house and often ate only one meal a day. He ironed his clothes by stretching them out between his mattress and box springs and sleeping on them. Carl s first teaching job was as band director at DeKalb, Texas high school. In fact, he got the job after only two years of college, when he wasn t much older than the students he taught. At that time, band directors were in great demand. He taught at DeKalb for a year, and then went back to finish his music degree. Upon graduation, he began teaching band at Grapeland, Texas high school, but was only able to teach one year and to meet his future wife, LaVerne Sadler before he was drafted. Carl served in the U.S. Army, 5th Armored Division and 199th Army Bands from He and LaVerne married in Not long after their marriage (which lasted for 64 years), they moved to Chapel Hill. Carl was band director at Chapel Hill high school only a couple of years before accepting a job with TISD, and he and LaVerne made Tyler their permanent home. Carl received his Master of Music Education degree from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago during the early years of his marriage. That wasn t easy either since it required his going to the Windy City every summer for three years in order to complete his coursework. LaVerne went with him one summer when their first child was about eight months old. If you ask what she remembers about that summer in Chicago, she says, Soot and dirt. Our daughter s diapers were never clean. We d wash them and hang them on a line strung outside the window, and they d come back dry but definitely not white! During his 37-year teaching career, Carl also found time for a number of outside interests. He became hooked on genealogical research in the 70s and that led to a book on his maternal ancestors which he wrote and published in the late 80s. Carl also enjoyed photography and gardening. He was a member and past president of UCT, a 50-year member of both St. Johns Lodge 53 AF&AM and Sharon Shrine. He played in the Shrine Band, which eventually formed the basis for the Tyler Big Band, one of his favorite avocations, both before and after his retirement. After retirement, for a number of years, Carl and LaVerne were also members of the Good Sam RV Group. All who knew Carl will remember him fondly as a music man, teacher, husband, father and friend. 5 BALLROOM DANCE NEWS Our USO ballroom dance in July was wellattended and successful. Eighty-eight came to enjoy the fun, and the dance made $1360 for TASCA! Big thanks go to our Ballroom Dance Committee: Debbie Smith, Doris Valentin and Brenda Davis. Thanks to our sponsor Signa Healthspring and Legacy Hospice for the wonderful snacks. The next ballroom dance will be on August 14 with a Roaring 20s theme. Dress up in your favorite 20s-style fashion. Think The Great Gatsby, and don t forget to have your pictures taken in front of the fun backdrop. Music for the evening will be provided by Steven Smitha. Trophies will be awarded for best costumes. Admission is $15 for TASCA members, $20 for guests. Please call the TASCA office (903) and RSVP by August 10. Whole tables can be reserved for parties of 8 or more. Doors open at 6:30 and the dance is from 7:00-10:00. Snacks will be available all evening. 7 JUST FOR FUN: SUMMER DRINK RECIPES FROM 1903 Browsing through old newspapers can be informative and loads of fun! The following excerpts and recipes are from The Minneapolis Journal for August 8, The article extolls the virtues of making summer drinks at home rather than buying them at the soda water counter. The 1903 writer adds, A proprietor of a soda water fountain sells, at an average cost of 8 cents apiece, drinks that cost him no more than 2 cents apiece. One of the most popular summer drinks at the time the article was written were called frappes. Here are recipes for a couple of them. 423 Kellywood Lane, Tyler, TX Billy & Mary Williams (903) texastravelerstyler@yahoo.com Orange Frappe Two tablespoonfuls of orange syrup or juice of one orange in a tall glass; two dessertspoonfuls sugar: two tablespoonfuls of shaved ice; fill three-fourths with bottled soda or seltzer and shake. Golden Slipper One lemon to each guest. Peel the entire lemon in one long spiral. Put in a tall thin glass, add half a bottle of ginger ale, shaved ice, and fill with seltzer water. Two straws are placed in each glass, then the lemon peel is wound about so as to be the length of the glass; the knob, formed by the stem end, is caught on the rim. The peel must be cut as free from tough white inner skin as it is possible. Another type of drink was called a Sangaree. Here s one. Mint Sangaree Into a glass half filled with shaved ice place two or three sprays of mint. With the mash, crush the mint until the leaves are reduced to a pulp. Add four tablespoonfuls of grape juice and fill the glass to the brim with seltzer water or vichy. Shake thoroughly, strain and serve with a bunch of fresh mint, protruding like a bouquet from the glass. And here, for stronger stomachs, is one more a claret for good measure. Frosted Claret Make a quart of green tea and pour it while boiling hot upon half a pound of white rock candy, the juice and peels of three lemons, one orange and two tablespoonfuls of whisky. Let this mixture cool, and when you are ready to serve it add a pint of claret and a pint of Apollinaris. The ingredients of this beverage must be ice cold when ready to serve as no ice is put in the glasses. By omitting the Apollinaris you may sweeten, but do not use the Apollinaris and sugar together. The 1903 writer also advises that lemonade be served in small...cups with handles, frosted claret from a tall pitcher in a tall high glass and a frappe should be poured from the shaker to the mixing glass and thence to a large, thin glass. Our writer concludes that A plate of crisp wafers is in good keeping with any service which includes sweet beverages. Enjoy the rest of the summer with these cool concoctions.
