Get involved! 42 TOURNAMENT HAS RECORD PARTICIPATION We re so thrilled to report that 56 players (14 tables) participated in the September tournament and that the tournament itself brought in almost $1400 for TASCA! Profuse thanks go to Latisha Cartwright and Atria Senior Living for providing such a wonderful lunch for all to enjoy. Thanks also go to Hembree Chiropractic for their generous sponsorship. Door prizes and cash prizes for tournament winners would not have been possible without the donations of individual TASCA members and participants. Thanks to all of you who support these events so enthusiastically. And finally, thanks to our 42 Tournament Committee members who made it all happen! Here are the happy first, second, and third place tournament winners: Randy Dobbs and Hugh Amos, Debra Duke and Doug Burks, Carmen Hall and Eleanor Curtis. TASCA VEGAS NIGHTS FUNDRAISER SUCCESSFUL Fifty people attended our recent Casino Night Fundraiser and had a great meal and a truly marvelous evening playing games and raising money for TASCA. We re very proud to report that this special event raised about $800! Thanks to Board Member Ryan Tew and crew for their hard work to make the event run smoothly. In addition to a number of door prizes, there was a grand prize for the evening an all-expense paid private event at Jose Feliciano s Lake House which went to Glenda Whisenhunt. A second prize of one-night accommodations with dinner at High Hill Farm went to Jenny Carlton. Congratulations to all the winners! Doors open at 6:30 and the dance is from 7:00-10:00. Snacks are available all evening. And mark your calendar for the Holiday Ball on November 13 with the theme of It s a Fairy Tale.

And we want to especially thank Debbie Smith and Traditions Health Care for providing food and the great backdrop for the pictures that were taken to celebrate the evening. For the next ballroom dance, get ready to don your favorite masquerade costumes for the Halloween Ball which will take place on October 9. Music provided by the Tuxedo Cats. Admission is $20 for TASCA members, $25 for guests. Please call the TASCA office (903) to RSVP by October 5. Whole tables can be reserved for parties of 8 or more. 6 MEDICARE SEMINARS BEGIN THIS MONTH AT TASCA During the months of October, November and December, UnitedHealthcare Medicare and Retirement representatives will make presentations here at TASCA. The seminars will cover general Medicare information as well as specific UnitedHealthcare product information. Mark your calendars for October 15, November 12 or for December 3 from 10 until 11:30 AM. Refreshments will be served at the meetings, and everyone is welcome to attend. After each seminar, UnitedHealthcare agents and managers will remain onsite to assist anyone with questions and enrollment needs. TASCA SAYS GOODBYE TO FOUR BELOVED MEMBERS One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die. -John Donne We are saddened to announce the recent deaths of Joyce Aber, Betty Gibbs, Dr. Bob Jones and Kay Chambers. Joyce, Betty and Kay had all been TASCA members since Joyce passed away this past August. Her favorite TASCA activity was playing Mah Jongg. We lost Betty, Bob and Kay in September. Betty loved playing 42, and Kay was a regular player of Hand and Foot. Bob, a TASCA member since 1991, had also served as a Board member. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joyce s honor may be made to the University Christian Church. For Betty, memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas. For Bob, charitable donations may be made to Hospice of East Texas, the Alzheimer s Association of North Texas and to the Mississippi State University Foundation. TYLER MUSEUM OF ART AND TJC PRESENT A ROCK WALK And what is a rock walk? This one is an art exhibit extraordinaire which spotlights the amazing granite sculptures of Candyce Garrett. Between now and May 22, 2016, Garrett s large-scale pieces will be on display outdoors on the lawn of the Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) and on the Tyler Junior College main campus. The timing seems perfect as summer winds down and cooler temperatures invite folks to spend more time outdoors. Take a walk and view the unique works of this world-renowned New Mexico artist. Twenty of Garrett s smaller scale granite sculptures will also be on display inside TMA until January 17, Remember that all TMA exhibits can be viewed free on the first Friday of each month. The museum opens Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tyler Museum of Art is supported by its members, Tyler Junior College and the City of Tyler. The museum is located on the TJC campus at 1300 S. Mahon. For more information, call (903) COUNTRY & WESTERN AND BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS TAKE A BREAK Many have enjoyed taking Country & Western and Ballroom dance lessons from Hugh Wallace for the last year or so. Well, Hugh will be taking a break from dance instruction for the rest of this year. Though we ll miss him while he s traveling and busying himself with other activities, we ll look forward to his return in January. We ll let you know dates and times as soon as we do. Page 7

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO THIS MONTH Probably the first thing that comes to mind when we think of the year 1915 is that World War I was raging. And though the U. S.

7 ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO THIS MONTH Probably the first thing that comes to mind when we think of the year 1915 is that World War I was raging. And though the U. S. had not yet joined the fray, newspapers of the time were filled with horror tales about the war. In fact, it was in October of 1915 that one of the largest and most devastating WWI battles took place in Loos, France. More than 400,000 died there on the Western Front. That same month and year, British nurse and teacher Edith Cavell was arrested and eventually executed by the Germans for helping Allied prisoners in Belgium to escape. As a front-page article from the El Paso Herald on October 21, 1915 states, The execution of Miss Cavell was characterized as a crime that dwarfs even that of the Lusitania, by the Rt. Rev. A. F. W. Ingram, bishop of London, preaching in St. Martin s church today at a Trafalgar day service. Closer to home, one hundred years ago this month, more than 25,000 people in favor of women s right to vote, marched in a festive parade in New York City. The New York Times for October 24 break down the numbers in this way: Women marchers 20,789, Men marchers 2,539, Women on horseback 74, 145 automobiles at six persons each 870, Musicians (57 bands) 1,068 adding that in the previous year, only 9600 had marched in the parade. President Woodrow Wilson, whose first wife had died in 1914, made October 1915 news by introducing the country to his fiancee Edith Bolling Galt, whom he married two months later. Wilson, that same month also became to first president ever to attend a World Series Game. And finally, during this month one hundred years ago, the radio telephone was making news because the first long-distance wireless communications were made between Arlington, Virginia and San Francisco, California and between Arlington and Paris, France. As one newspaper reporter of the time puts it, Next thing these scientists will be doing will be to enable a person to see the one he is talking to by wireless, whether he be in the same town or hundreds of miles distant. Their inventions are uncanny.
