It was an absolute joy to be part of the Yard Duty Birds, performing for the adoring crowds and a treat to see the Padres + cool Mumma (Kez), up there playing the 80s hits. I would like to say a big THANK YOU to the main organisers of the night: Jules, Jen, Emily, Liz and Helen. They spent many months leading up to the event preparing for the night to ensure everything ran smoothly. Thank you ladies for your time, effort and joy in running such a great EPS event for us! Building works Last week a few of us went out to inspect our new building. It is growing quickly with all the walls framed and roof going up this week. All is quiet here at the moment, but we will soon see builders back finishing off the footings in preparation for the modulars to be delivered in mid-august. Biggest Morning Tea A reminder to please come along to our Biggest Morning tea raising funds for the Cancer Council this Friday from 9.15am in the Junior School Hall. Entry is a gold coin donation with lovely morning tea supplied, the Senior School Choir Performing and opportunities to have a chat and know it is for a good cause. Our kids are getting involved with our Prep to Grade 3 students preparing for the Poster Competition and our Grades 4-6 kids baking for the annual EPS Bake Off! All cakes will be judged and then sold to help raise funds on the morning and at our Market on Saturday. Get baking or just come along! Evacuation and Lock down drills A s p a r t o f o u r E m e r g e n c y Management as a school we need to conduct regular evacuation drills and run through our lock down procedures. All of the staff will be briefed in regards to procedures and they are all very aware of our drills, having done them each year. Teachers will also talk to the students about the importance of safety drills, how to conduct the lock down drill properly and for our younger grades, explain that it is not a scary or frightening event. We often talk to the students about Lock down drills in particular as in the case of extreme weather having to stay inside. Please have a chat to your kids at home, as we will do so here, to ensure that they all feel safe and comfortable about the drills which will happen in the coming weeks. If late please sign the students in at the office with a yellow slip which must then be passed to the classroom teacher or specialist. Thank you. Parent Opinion Survey The 2018 Parent Opinion Survey will run from the 23 July to 26 August. The survey will be conducted online and only takes 15minutes to complete. It can be accessed via desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile through a secure online portal. It is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. All responses are anonymous. The survey is designed to assist us in gaining an understanding of your perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. We will use the survey results to help inform and direct future planning and improvement strategies. We will provide the randomly selected parents with the survey link shortly; parents log in to the secure site and complete the survey online. We thank you in advance for your participation. Nicole Richards Acting Principal Big Night Out It was one of the biggest Big Nights Out, ever, and last Friday s party at the St Kilda Town Hall showed Elwood Primary s community at its finest, with parents, teachers and friends dancing together through the night. In two mighty performances, the Yard Duty Birds and Padres played their hearts out, with diverse sets of 80s rock and pop seeing the crowd call for more! Along with DJ Rob s non-stop dance hits, the bands tunes filled the dancefloor with a bevy of Madonnas, a handful of Flashdancers and a swag of 80s TV stars rocking alongside Devo, Cher and Kylie Mole. Some temperamental tennis players mixed it with Dynasty divas, rock gods and Rubik s cubes, while Tony Basil boogied with Robert Palmer s back-up dancers, some short-shorted footy stars and the cast of Top Gun. Vying for costume prizes in the couples category were Sandy and Danny from Grease, a totally rad prom king and queen, and first to the party Dazza and Shazza, but they couldn t hold back the crowd s applause for the buff pair from Baywatch. Prince, Freddy Mercury, Doc and Beetlejuice gave two Mr T s a run for their gold necklaces, with one of the Ts winning the ultimate best male prize while, in the ladies category, the cutest Gertie and ET earned the loudest applause, but only half a decibel ahead of a very Physical Olivia Newton- John, a female Prince and a Marvellous She Ra! Hats off to everyone who came along for making the night such a success. Your effort to dress up and your overall enthusiasm for this highlight of our school community s social calendar (although it only happens every two years) made it truly memorable. Thank you. Jules, Jen, Emily, Liz and Helen Division Sport Finals Congratulations to our Hockey, AFL and Soccer sides who competed in the Beachside Division finals this week. All sides did an amazing job reaching the finals and all of our sports people should be extremely proud of themselves for representing Elwood PS in such high regard. Unfortunately we have just missed out on progressing to the next level with our Hockey team placing 2nd, Girls Soccer placing 2nd and our AFL teams placing 3rd. Such a great effort however still placing so high in the competition. Kids Market Thanks for all the interest in our first kids market this Saturday. We have filled all the spots and have been in contact with all those who applied. Please feel free to pop your application in to the front office for the September or future markets, and see you all Saturday in your onsies! Barb and Pauline Parent Maths Information Night Last year, Elwood Primary School had a focus on encouraging and scaffolding our student to have a growth mindset towards all learning and in particular Maths. The school communities hard work in supporting students and teachers in this area has prepared our students to explore Challenging Maths Tasks this year with the confidence that they can give it a go! To find out more about Challenging Maths Tasks and experience what one is like for yourself, come along to our Parent Maths Information Night. Tuesday 21 August at 7.00pm in the JLC. 3 The Kids Cancer Project. Tilda, Evie and Zali (Gr5) were joined by two friends from other schools and spent 8 solid hours creating a 2500 paged illustrated book last weekend. All for A Kids Cancer Project money goes to medical research to improve treatments and find a cure for kids with cancer. They need to raise $240 in order for their book to be judged.
