4 This Month s History Tidbit The lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner" come from the Defence of Fort Mc'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814 by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key. Key was on a ship just outside of the Baltimore Harbor when he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory. The picture to the left shows the condition of the flag at the end of the battle. Over 100 years later, President Herbert Hoover signed the bill on March 4, 1931, officially adopting "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem of the United States of America. Thanks to this Month s Purple Pig Donors Art Najera Richard D. Enea Diane Brown Bob Bagwell Bob & Carol Painter Roy Wolf Dan Smith Alice Harwood Jerome Kahele Jack Fernandez Bob Beck John Jiminez Gerry Hanratty A Special Thank you to Fredy Kinadeter for hosting our Knife Sharpening Event to Raise Money for our Major Project.
