1 Mentor Public Schools The Cornerstone of the Community The Shore Stakeholder A Message from the Principal Dear Shore Community Member, The Cardinal Challenge competition, an annual academic quiz bowl competition between the three middle schools, was held last night in A Lecture at Mentor High School. Students from all three grade levels compete in five rounds of academic questions against students from each of the other schools. It was an exciting match with Memorial eking out a victory over the Shore team (Ridge ended with 240)! The Shore team was comprised of the following students: 6th graders: Nina Bauman, Kristen Buse, Kaley Elliott, Alex Murray, Tommy Oddo, Joshua Pugh7th graders: Jacob Butler, Lexy Evans, Logan Feldkamp, Brandon Harber, Jon Nykiel, Jake Powalie, Steven Schein 8th graders: Danielle Kremer, Logan Leak, Vishnu Nistala, Jason Shadle, and Trevor Pugh. The team was coached by Mr. Chris Miller. Nice work team! Thanks to the following PTSA parents that assisted with Winter AIMSWEB benchmark testing recently their assistance in the process is always very helpful to the Shore staff and students! The Shore Wrestling team finished their season at the very tough Twinsburg Tournament and had two wrestlers place Billy Hudson took 2nd place while Kyle Hennig finished 4th! Congratulations to the student-athletes for a great season and thanks to Coaches Pollock and Starkey for their guidance and work with our wrestlers! Wow! The best intramural dodgeball tournament took place in shore's gymnasium MONDAY night! 25 teams of 6 competed in what will be remembered as the "Shot heard around the GYM". On the verge of elimination, Team Martin sank a full court shot to force a jail break and a much need victory on their way to being crowned CHAMPIONS. Overall, Team Devon Martin and 24 other teams competed in a double-elimination tournament that was full of exciting moments. 6th grade upstarts Team Zalba and Team Tatarunas had great showings against the older competition. Team Sean Reardon fell just short of knocking off Team Martin for the championship. In the girls division Team "7th grade girls basketball team" went undefeated in a round robin format to be crowned champios of the girls division. A power outage at LaMuth cancelled the basketball game for the girls, but they decided to stick around Shore and get another win for their undefeated season. Congrats Girls. Mr. Toot was very proud of the behavior and sportsmanship of all the kids. Look for another dodge ball tournament in a few weeks. Another dodgeball tournament is being planned for February 23 with the team form located in this edition of the Stakeholder. Lake County Council PTA Reflections Winners Announced! Eight Shore students have entries moving on to state competition! Congratulations to the following students for having PTA Reflections entries that are moving on to state competition. Shore was well represented in the county for the number of outstanding entries that have achieved this level of competition! This year s theme was Diversity is... Visual Arts Logan Leak, Vishnu Nistala, and Claire Sharpnack Literature Vishnu Nistala, Rachel Wenzel, and Zoe Perrier Photography Troy Molinar, Jon Nykiel This is the last week to collect items for the Blessing Bags for Project Hope Lake County s Homeless Shelter. Traveling size items toothpaste, shampoo, soap, hand sanitizer, etc. are all items that we can distribute through our bags! The full list was in the February 3rd Stakeholder. Shore families have responded generously to helping the shelter through their kind donations...that is very much appreciated!!! Page 2

3 Next week the 6th grade students are participating in an activity called National Mix It Up Day in their lunch periods. This is a national campaign that helps K-12 teachers develop inclusive school communities. Students thrive socially and academically in schools that are inclusive. Yet, for far too many students, schools are hotbeds of exclusion. Social scientists have long maintained that contact between diverse groups helps alleviate tensions and reduce prejudice. Mix It Up seeks to break down the barriers between students and improve intergroup relations so there are fewer misunderstandings that can lead to conflicts, bullying and harassment. The next dodge ball tournament is scheduled for Thursday, 2/23. Stop by room 221 to pick up dodge ball forms. Remember if you can't make a team, Mr. Toot will put you on a team on the day of the tournament. Come join in the fun and the excitement of Dodge Ball. 5 Cheerleading Clinics for Middle School girls will be held March 12 th, 13 th and 14 th from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Mentor High School Student Center. The fee for each clinic is $6.00 per participant. The clinics will focus on skills for tryouts. Interested girls should pick up information including the required medical and insurance form from the main office. Mentor Girls Softball League information packets are available in both the main and guidance offices. Shore s 3H group has come up with an idea to pay it forward and help others in our community. They are making Blessing Bags for Project Hope, Lake County s Homeless Shelter located in Painesville. Project Hope houses up to 35 people every night. The students have been in contact with the shelter to get a list of the MOST NEEDED items to fill their Blessing Bags and will present them sometime in March. They created posters around the school to spread the word. They will also be selling tickets to students throughout the building during lunch periods (with the cooperation of Mr. Miller s 6 th grade 3H group and Mr. Dawson s 7 th grade group) to support their 3H cause. Students can buy a raffle ticket for $1 or 6 for $5 to win a FRO-YO or SUBWAY gift card. You may also bring in (4) needed items from the list to exchange for 1 TICKET. Pasta for Pennies is back!! Your Friday advisory can earn a FREE Olive Garden lunch if you raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! Drop off your spare change in your Friday advisory collection box for the next three weeks and you may be eating some pasta and breadsticks very soon!!
