The Annual Meeting of the Olivedale Senior Citizens of Fairfield County took place March 28. Your 2012 officers are: Jim Martin, President; Larry Wentz, Vice President; Ruth Wilcox, Secretary and Karen Sanner, Treasurer. Here s hoping for more wonderful years to come. Every year in March we oil up the fryer and prepare for another great fish fry season. This year is no different. Tickets are sold at the office prior to the night of the fish fry, or at the door. The tickets are $8 for adult and $4 for child. Our meal includes all you can eat fish served with coleslaw, baked potato and dessert. The meal is served from 4:30p to 6:30p and carry out is available. So, come enjoy a relaxing dinner served to you at your table by our wonderful volunteers (pictured right). Mark your calendar for the 4th Tuesday of every month through September and enjoy a great meal with your family and friends. This event is open to the public. We look forward to seeing you at the next fish fry on Tuesday, May 22nd. The Olivedale Veterans have taken great pride in honoring and caring for the Olivedale United States flag. In March, a new flag was ceremoniously raised along with the POW/MIA flag to fly beneath it. The POW/MIA flag is the symbol of our Nation s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia. Memorial Day is Monday, May 28. Olivedale will be closed in observance of all that have gone before us.

3 May 2012 The Oak Leaf Page 3 When May approaches, our thoughts go to all those who are mothers or act in motherly ways. Thoughts of my own mother, who was loved so dearly and gone too soon come to the surface in tearful memory. She filled our lives with laughter and our hearts with love. These traits along with her strength and determination were passed on. Mothers are the nurturers and teachers of our children. We also take the week of May 7 to show appreciation to all Teachers. Teachers work long hours. Not only do they teach in the classroom, but then they go home and make up lesson plans or grade papers. Theirs is not an 2nd Tuesday Lunch The 2nd Tuesday lunch for May features bean soup, cornbread, salad and dessert. Join us Tuesday, May 8, 11:30a-12:30p. Friday, May 4, is the reservation deadline. Sign up by paying $5 at the office. Breakfast s Take Summer Off May will be the last time until fall that you can have a pancake breakfast, waffle breakfast or visit Granny in the Attic. All will be on summer vacation. Pancake breakfast is all you can eat pancakes, served with bacon, juice, coffee or tea served Wednesday, May 16 from 7:30a-11:00p for $3.50. Extra sides for 50 ; sausage, juice, scrambled eggs. Granny s Attic is only open during the pancake breakfast. Waffles will have their last hurrah Thursday, May 31 from 8:00a-10:00a. Enjoy the waffles, sausage and coffee or tea for a suggested $3 donation. COMMUNICATION CORNER EATING AT OLIVEDALE 8 to 5 job, much like mothers. God Bless all mothers everywhere for the labor of their love. Memorial Day is fast approaching and usually means the beginning of the summer months, barbeques, family get-togethers, and a day to remember those who came before us and those who died to keep our country safe and secure. We, as Americans, should not take our freedoms lightly and always thank our service men and women for their sacrifices keeping us free. To all families who have current and past serving soldiers, God Bless You! Gone Fishin All you can eat fish served with baked potato and coleslaw will be served Tuesday, May 22, from 4:30p-6:30p. Tickets are available in the office for pre-sale, Adult $8, Children $4; or can be purchased at the door, but may be limited. The Queen said Let Em Eat Cake! Or pie, or an entrée, or casseroles, or any number of things when you leaf through the cookbook Olivedale will have after we receive enough recipes! We want any kind of recipes, from the smallest add water and one egg to the 20 step, 2 day recipes. Desserts, appetizers, entrees, party foods, casseroles or whatever recipe you have that you would like to share, we will add to our cookbook. Recipes must be submitted no later than Thursday, May 31 so the good tastes of our members can be put in writing! Call Karen Sanner for more information at Call Today to Schedule Your Personal Tour! 4 Page 4 The Oak Leaf May 2012 Computer Classes The following computer classes are back on the schedule. Each class is $40 per subject and has two, 2 hour classes that run from 9:00a-11:00a. All classes are on Friday with the schedule as follows: Internet: April 27 and May 4 May 11 and May 18 Digital Cameras: May 25 and June 1 Classes And More Clogging Classes Clogging classes for Beginner Plus will resume Wednesday, May 23 at 9:30a, with the return of teacher Betty Sickle. Classes are Wednesdays, unless otherwise noted, and are $2 per class. A little known fact about clogging is that in 2003, clog dancing was included as a competitive dance sport in the AAU Junior Olympics! Click those heels and have some fun! Basket Class It s that time of year when jelly, jam and pies are being made fresh, so the best basket to have on hand is a fruit basket. It will be 4 1/2 high (10 with the handle) and 13 in length. Materials are made, cut, etc. in advance, so if you will not be able to attend after signing up, contact Nan Wood, , in order to not be charged for the unused materials. Sign up by Friday, May 11 at the office for the Monday, May 14, 9:00a class. $28 due on class day. Chat Room The Olivedale equivalent of a Chat Room, the old-fashioned kind where you gather around, smile at each other, and talk on interesting subjects, will have their get-together Tuesday, May 8 directly following the 2nd Tuesday lunch. While chatting, sip your Olivedale coffee or tea, just like it s done around your own kitchen table. As a gathering point, meet at the tables near the café booths in the general dining area. A great way to meet and keep new friends and engage in mentally stimulating activities! Ballroom Dancing The merry, merry month of May will perhaps have you dancing around the Maypole, where dancers perform circle dances around a tall pole which is dressed with garlands, painted stripes, flowers, flags and other emblems! I am sure Stan, the Dance Man, will not have that on his ballroom dance agenda for May, however, he will be having a potpourri of dances for you on each of the Friday sessions. Your garlands, flowers or painted stripes may consist of lessons on the tango, rumba, waltz or even the salsa. Join the fun Fridays at 1:00p, and see what s in store. You will have a merry, merry time! $5 per person, per lesson is payable at the office before class. No partner required. So pole yourself together and hustle on down to try ballroom dancing in May! Sing Out Loud Per research, belting out a fast-paced tune creates an instant distraction from stress, because singing releases mood boosting endorphins, lowers heart rates and even decreases blood pressure! So why not sing, hum, smile and entertain your way to healthy by committing to being a part of the fun-loving Kitchen Band? For more information, contact Karen Sanner, , or any member of the band. Tai Chi Tai Chi classes will not be in session for June, July or August, but will resume in the fall. Watch your September newsletter for dates! Beginning an exercise program may seem overwhelming at first. For members at Olivedale, the first step is to have a medical release form completed by their physician and returned to Olivedale. This enables Stacey, the staff exercise physiologist, to determine which mode of exercise is safe and appropriate for each individuals fitness program. Once a member has been cleared for exercise in the aerobic room, each member will then register for orientation at the front desk. Orientations for Aerobic Machines are on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00a-12:00p; orientations for Weight Machines are in the afternoon on Wednesday and Friday; all are by appointment only. If you are unable to attend these times, arrangements for an alternative orientation time will be made by Stacey to accommodate you. Following orientation, you may make an appointment for an individual fitness evaluation to determine your current fitness level. An individualized fitness program will then be developed for you. Periodically you may receive additional evaluations to determine your progress and update your fitness program. Stacey will set up individual orientation times for evaluations. Spring session; April 30 through June 22
