President Dave Doyon Vice-President Gerry Barrons Advisor Murray Inverarity ca Dec 2010 Secretary Bob Garrett ca Editor - Dave Murray (Covers club activities and news for Nov 2010) The October meeting will be held at the Windsor Flying Club on Tuesday Dec 7th at 7:30 PM Past President Ron Harway rharway@cogeco.ca Treasurer Dave Murray davidlmurray@ pobox.com Presidents Report - December 2010 Members: Our December meeting will be our annual swap shop/auction. This is a opportunity to cleanup your building room and convert those unused items to cash to fund the next project. Dave Kool has agreed to be our auctioneer again. The club executive will be preparing and presenting our proposed budget in January. If any member has suggestions on items that should be included, please send me an at dldoyon@mnsi.net or give me a call at This year our lawn cutting fees will make a significant jump and keeping a balanced budget is becoming more difficult since the lawn cutting is our single biggest expense for the year. The Executive wants to propose a balanced budget that is realistic based on our clubs previous experience. There have been some members who have expressed a desire to have our field cut 2 times a week during the spring and early summer. This can be done but will require additional funds to keep our budget in balance. The additional cutting will most likely require a dues increase from all members. Our plan is to present two budgets. The first option will keep the current level of lawn cutting and the second option will include the extra cutting. I suspect there will be opinions on both options. Our January meeting will be the time to express your views. Please be sure to attend the January meeting. I personally will do everything I can to keep the dues increase to the minimum needed. The members can then decide on how we proceed.
The club runs two events throughout the year that are an additional source of funds, the Leamington jet event and our summer open house/ air show. If these events are to continue we need the assistance of more of our members. It is unfair for the same few to put hours of work in these events that subsidize our clubs operations for everyone. We need everyone s help if we are to continue with these events. I have been asked why we do not just spend our reserves on club operations. The reserves are in place to fund the purchase of a lawn mower if we get to a point where we can no longer afford to have a lawn service cut our field. Also our two neighboring clubs have lost their field or are very close to be forced to relocate. We could find ourselves in that position at any time. I believe it is important to have reserves available in such a case. The reserves we have would only be a start on the cost involved in finding and preparing a new field for use. I also feel that a portion of any excess money club earns though our events be added to the reserves. Over the past 3 years the executive has worked very hard ensure that our dues were spent wisely. We plan to continue this way in We also are looking for topics and ideas for the post meeting activities for the New Year. Please let us know if you have any ideas that may be of interest this year. Dave Doyon President, SPRCF dldoyon@mnsi.net Treasurer s Report By Dave Murray The financial report for Nov 2010 along with the Budget Vs. Actual for year-to-date are posted in the 'members only' section of the website. As pointed out by Dave Doyon in his President's Report, we maintain a contingency fund to cover unforeseen expenditures. This contingency fund is kept in guaranteed interest certificates which offer us a small interest return. Since these GIC's remain static in their capital value and do not play a part in our normal operational transactions, I will not be reporting on their value in every Treasurer's report as it is just redundant information and seems to cause the incorrect impression from some members that we are very flush in funds which is not actually the case. We always budget for break-even on our operations but sometimes make money on our major events. The actual value of the GIC's can always be seen in the Budget Vs. Actual Year to Date report that I post in the 'members only' section of the website. Dave Murray Treasurer davidlmurray@pobox.com Editor's Notes By Dave Murray Just an update on the status of our incorporation - Dave Doyon and I have not been able to find any current information on our legal incorporation. So we have asked Jerry Beneteau to undertake an investigation of our legal status. This very important since, if we have an accident and get sued, even our MAAC insurance will not assure that any or all of our members could be named in a legal action. If we are legally incorporated, such a legal action would be limited to
the assets of the club as opposed to individual members. As long as our legal status is up in the air, we are running a risk for all members when we run public events. Secretary's Bench..(Ron Harway for Bob Garrett) The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM on November 2nd 2010 by President Dave Doyon. A motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting was made by Dave Kool, seconded by Murray Inverarity and carried by the membership. After treasurer Dave Murray gave an update on the status of the financials on the club, a motion was made to accept the treasurer's report by Jack Entwistle, seconded by Dennis Pratt and carried. No new members present. Old Business: Peter Doupnik inquired about the status of the KiJiJii account set up for the club and it was noted by Dave Doyon that the ads start out well, then gradually end up farther down the page unless the club pays a $5/10 per month retainer to keep it current and will look into the feasibility of the cost. Dave Kool had noted to the club that an old member of the club passed away, Win Matthews the previous week. Dave Doyon mentioned attending the AGM in Chatham and re-stated that two members of the club, Bill Green and Roger Damore were given leader status with MAAC. Dave had a chat with the Staples and Chatham clubs at the meeting and after the meeting went to the Chatham field for flying. Dave noted that Staples was losing their club and invited the members to attend our field until their field is resolved. He also noted that windmills are installed at the Chatham club and are quite intimidating. Despite rumours of our field having windmills installed, the township told Dave that there is no intention of that happening in our area in the near future. Speaking of our field, he also noted that the last contact with the radio station was not quite amicable and as a result of the conversation he had, the club will keep a LOW profile with respect to our relationship with the station in the future. It was mentioned by Dennis Pratt that the indoor starts up on Sunday Nov 7Th and he will have some of his foamie designs for sale at the event and will have a couple available to try out as well. Murray Inverarity is looking into finding a larger venue for the indoor for the club.
While still on the indoor discussion, Dave Kool inquired about non-members attending the indoor and flying, and Dave Doyon said that pilots will be only invited once and must become a member if they return. Eye protection for guests at the indoor events was brought up next and although MAAC has no mandatory requirement for glasses, Dave Murray made a motion to make it "recommended" to wear glasses for all persons in the gym while planes are flying, seconded by Bill Green and carried. The MAAC required sign will note this as well to inform all. New Business: Dave Doyon opened the new business with a serious matter that affects all of the club and its members. One of our exec members was going by the field and noticed that the gate was locked and two cars with lights were on the flying field. He opened the gate and the cars went to the exit and met the exec. When he inquired what they were doing, he noticed that one was a club member. The club member said that they were shooting skeet on the field. The exec member told them that it was against club policy to be doing this and that this will be addressed at the November meeting. Dave Doyon said that the executives of the club will meet and send a stern warning to the offending member. As Dave noted earlier, the club wishes to keep a good relationship with the surrounding neighbours and especially with the radio station. He stressed at the meeting that any activity other flying will not be allowed at the field. Dave said that due to lack of an interest, the yearly club Christmas party will more than likely be cancelled this year. The November elections were held and Dave Doyon was elected president again after being nominated by Dave Kool. Dave Doyon in turn nominated Dave Murray for treasurer and both have accepted. Gerry Barrons was nominated by Dennis Pratt as Vice President and he has accepted the position. Dennis Pratt nominated Ron Harway and I have accepted the secretary position for this year. Many thanks to Bob Garrett, whom held this position for the past three years. Murray Inverarity is also an advisor for the new executive. Based on the positions all being filled, Dave Doyon declared a complete executive for the 2011 season. Dave Doyon stated that the club is interested in preparing an audit as stated in last month's meeting, and due to the fact that we need an update on our incorporation status, Jerry Beneteau volunteered and will investigate the matter for the club. A motion to close the business portion of the meeting was made by Jack Entwistle and seconded by Dave Kool There was a 50/50 draw held and was won by Ron Mitchell...winning $42.50
Members Present: Dave Murray, Orval Masse, Paul Sousa, Bill Jarvis, Dennis Pratt, O.J.Deslippe, Jerry Beneteau, Peter Doupnik, Ron Mitchell, Ralph Humphreys, Dave Kool, Bill Green, Murray Inverarity, Don Booker, Jack Entwistle, Ryk Bezemer, James Beintema, Ron Harway, Kusay Satto, Terry Allen, Clarence Calder, Dave Kalbfleisch, Jim Bridge, Phil Jenot, Dave Doyon, Gerry Barrons. Other Fun Stuff: Since, nobody has sent me any of their interesting old pictures, I guess I have to dig out some more of my old stuff to amaze and amuse you. OK, below is a picture from This is me and Joe Novosad with a free flight that we had just retrieved from Detroit a week after launching it from Ford's test track. We did not equip it with a de-thermalizer and it promptly buggered off and crossed the River. The picture is taken in the back of my parent's house on Central Avenue. We were both students at Herman High School at the time. (Notice how Joe looks like he just stepped out of 'Back to the Future' whereas I am my normal very cool self in my suede loafers.) We went through the tunnel and back on my Lambretta motor scooter to retrieve this piece of aeronautical history. We subsequently both became members of Sun Parlor R/C Flyers and flew our Reed Relay equipped Tri-Squires at the Sod Farm. Joe has unfortunately passed on a few years ago. The next couple of pictures are from They were taken in the back of my house at what is now CFB Suffield, Alberta, permanent married quarters where I worked as a 'Defence Scientific Service Officer'. Some of you will recognize the aircraft as a Contender and the Radio as the first Heathkit pulse proportional. The engine is an O.S. 60 Gold Head. Believe it or
not, during this period, I worked on one of the very first military implementations of an RPV (remotely piloted vehicle) and collaborated with other spooks in the U.S. at Sandia Labs in New Mexico who were also working on an RPV. The purpose of the RPV's is still classified. Notice the cool 70's hair and moustache. This was my James Bond period. (I can just hear Dave Kool laughing.) Finally, below is a picture taken in the early 90's of me with my Grumman Cheetah (AA5A). The picture was taken at Ottawa's Upland Airport before we moved it to the Carp Airport just outside of Ottawa where I owned a hangar. OK you guys, I'm running out of pictures so you need to send me some of your stock of old pictures related to aviation and our hobby for the amusement and edification of your club mates.
