Editor s Desk Lots of new ticket images added this month, thanks to Yasmina Chapeau from France and Glen Faulhaber from North Carolina. Both of them ed me a bunch of image scans for tickets we didn t have up on the lotology.net website. Ever since I joined this club my goal has been to collect an online guide with 100% of the images for tickets we track. The number creeps ahead slowly over time, but lately it seems we re fighting a losing battle. The lottery agencies come out with new issues at the rate of per month. It s a lot of work cataloging those issues (just ask Ron Moermond!) and managing the database (ask Art Chamberlin!). It s also quite a task to capture an image and save it on lotology.net. But when a member sends in an image for a ticket we haven t loaded yet, it cuts the work in half. Go online and check your collection to see if you have something we re missing. And if you find one, send me the scan! This month s ticket of the month is the Big Spin from California. This series was tied in with the game that entitled winners to their moment of fame as they went live on TV to spin the wheel for some big bucks. Read all about the Big Spin July s Ticket of the Month. Bill Pasquino wrote in this month with some great advice for the upcoming Lotovention: 1. Wear comfortable clothing. You will be up and down, sitting on the floor, and digging into all the goodies available. As a group we will not be going anywhere that requires dressy clothing. T-shirts, shorts, jeans are your best bet. 2. Do not worry that you have nothing to trade or give away. There will be more free tickets available than you can haul away! There will be a couple old collections donated and many scratched, sample void, and lottery related items. 3. Leave some time to take in all the sights, shops and attractions. 4. Saturday evening we will be attending a group dinner (site to be determined) and take time to enjoy each other s company. Again, dress will be casual. 5. Please attend the business meeting on Saturday afternoon. These are not that long, but many important decisions need to be addressed. Your input is welcome and encouraged. Looking forward to seeing you in Philadelphia! Gil Davis Lotologist Monthly Editor Lotologist Monthly 1

President s Report By Arthur Rein, #635 Yes, it s me again. I know it has been quite some time since I ve written a column but I think the time is right for me to start writing again. Besides I have a lot to say. Club Elections To Be Held? First up: club elections are scheduled to be held later this year. Let me begin by saying I believe the time has come for me, again, to move over and let someone else take the reins of the club. I have been the president longer than anyone else and, let s face it; I have done very little of late to help the club as a president should. I still haven t gotten over my father s death last year, or dealing with my mother s countless health problems. Also, my wife Cyrella, was recently back in the hospital for the breathing problems that have plagued her through life. And let s not even talk about my business life which has me working 60 to 70 hours each week. Because of all this I have been relying on the good graces of our club vice-president, Steve Gilbert, to do my work and while I have shown my appreciation to him, it really isn t fair. So I will be encouraging him to run for the office of the presidency. During the past few scheduled elections there weren t any real elections anyway since most people either didn t care or just didn t want to run for office. Only time will tell if we will have an election this year but club bylaws say we have to announce it. So enough with the excuses as it s time to get out of the way and talk about. Lotovention Yes, it is that time again. The Lotovention will be returning to the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area on the weekend of August, 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd. It will be at the Sheraton Four Points hotel located at 9461 Roosevelt Boulevard in the heart of the city known for its brotherly love. Call the hotel now at and tell them you are with the Global Lottery Collector s Society for a special discounted rate of $99.00 per night plus tax. The important thing to remember is that they are holding a block of rooms for us that will be released on July 1 st, so it is very important that you call by June 30 th to make your reservations. After that you will either pay a higher rate or they may not even have any rooms available. If you don t make your reservations now you will forget. If you wait for the next newsletter to remind you it will be too late. Can t Attend? If you can t attend you can still be a big part of the ceremonies by either donating to the convention by way of the freebie tables, goodie bags or raffle prizes. Don t have anything to donate? Then send in raffle money and be guaranteed of a prize. It will be mailed to you after the convention. Ticket Compiler Needs Your Help Yes, it s time for the monthly request to get your local instant tickets into our ticket compiler, Ron Moermond. He needs your help. WE need your help. We are getting far behind in too many states. I still make a lot of ticket runs and send Ron many tickets from these trips but I can t do it alone. Former Member Collection Saved Several months ago a former member, Jean Clemmer, #510, reached out to the club via its web site, requesting to donate her collection to the club. She lives in Maryland, which isn t too far from my home. We remained in contact until I was able to stop by her home recently to pick up her items. They will be featured on the freebie tables of the Lotovention and will be made available to non-attending members after the convention. If you have items to donate to the club please don t hesitate to donate them. I will be sponsoring a one year membership for Jean as a way to say thank you. Lotologist Monthly 2

Vice President s Message I hope everyone is enjoying this summer and all that it has to offer. To me it is much better than the 17 snowstorms we had in the Philadelphia area this past winter. Lotovention 2014 is fast approaching. I hope you have made your plans to attend. If not, call the hotel Four Points by Sheraton at (215) to make your reservation now. Even if you cannot attend for the full three days, make every effort to come on Saturday and spend the day and night with us. Generally most of us try to go to breakfast, lunch and dinner together. Your newsletters and the club s website have all the information you need to attend. Make sure you send your registration form and $20.00 fee to Walter Johnston along with your raffle tickets. If you do not pre-register, you can still attend the convention and sign in when you arrive. There will also be plenty of extra raffle tickets available at the convention. We still need your help and support with tickets and door prizes. Several of you have already sent in your extras and for this I thank you! However, we can always use more. Check out your extra supply of scratched, sample/voids and passive tickets and send some of them along to me for the convention. Any amount would be appreciated. My address is 412 Rennard Street Philadelphia, PA Our annual business meeting will be held at the Lotovention. If you have any concerns or ideas for the agenda, please send them along to me for inclusion in our list of items to be discussed. I d also like to remind you to send any new tickets you have recently found to our ticket compiler Ron Moermond. He can always use your help in keeping our guide up to date. When it is time to renew your membership think about dropping the hard copy being mailed to your home and becoming a networked member by getting your newsletter on-line from our web site. The link to the newsletter is generally ed out a full two weeks before the rest of the membership receives it via postal mail. You will be saving yourself and the club some money. There is one final item. In our last newsletter there was a paid advertisement by Glen Faulhaber. The GLCS is not involved in his limited partnership and all questions and concerns should be sent directly to Glen. Best regards and happy collecting, Steven Gilbert Vice - President GLCS stegil919@aol.com Lotologist Monthly 3

Ticket of the Month Welcome to the Ticket of the Month. Lottery ticket collecting has many different avenues of specialization that a collector can pursue. One could collect a particular state or province, a topic, a series of tickets, or any number of specialties. We choose a particular ticket that seems ripe for picking off the collectible tree and examine the possibilities. This month s ticket is the Big Spin series from California. According to our database there are at least 50 Big Spin tickets from California, and one each from Illinois, Maine, and Canadian Atlantic Provinces. According to Wikipedia: The Big Spin is the California Lottery's first television game show. Originally a Fred Tatashore production, it was later an Alexander Media Services production, followed by a production of Cal Image, and then finally a Jonathan Goodson Production. It ended with a fixed top prize of $3 million and a minimum guaranteed cash prize of $1,750. The total cash and prizes given in 2007 came out to $17,872,500, the most money given away in a game show that year, therefore being "the biggest money game show on Earth" as its introduction stated. Originally, the show was taped in Hollywood, California at Hollywood Center Studios. From 1986 to 1998, the show was taped in Sacramento, the state capital as well as headquarters of the lottery. From 1999 until the end of its run, the show was taped in Hollywood at KCET Studios. The Big Spin ended as the longest-running lottery game show on January 10, 2009, over 23 years since its first broadcast in October 1985; it was replaced with Make Me a Millionaire on January 17. Thanks to Alan Oster, we have a complete image archive of the Big Spin tickets on lotology.net. Alan collected these tickets for years and we were able to scan every one. Here s a sample of the first tickets issued in this series: Lotologist Monthly 4

Passive Lottery Tickets #7 of 14 - Michigan by Steve Gilbert Michigan has issued over a dozen passive tickets. The first Michigan passive ticket was issued on November 24, It was a 50-cent ticket called The Weekly Green Game. The colors of this ticket are green on gray paper while the major part of the ticket has The State Of Michigan Lottery written in the center with the logo M$L. The bottom part of the ticket has the control numbers, drawing date and lottery number. The next 50-cent Michigan passive ticket was issued on October 7, It was called MICHIGAME. Top half colors are: YELLOW, GREEN, & RED with M$L in RED and Michigan outlined in BLUE. The bottom half of the ticket is GRAY with the numbers in small type. On January 17, 1980 the MICHIGAME ticket was made a ½ inch shorter width and the numbers were now larger and thicker. Michigan issued several $1.00 limited edition games starting on August 5, Each one was for 6 weeks. The first one was called THE 76 GAME. The next one was called WINTER WONDERFUL GAME. A third game was called SUPERPLAY. MICHIGAN JACKPOT was the first $1.00 game which was issued on July 25, A flyer called this the GOLD GAME since its color is gold on light gray paper. This ticket has 10 numbers plus one Jackpot Number to match. On April 10, 1975 this ticket underwent a name change to MICHIGAN JACKPOT TRIPLE PLAY with a stub added on the right side. A fourth limited edition game was issued with just one drawing date. It was a $5.00 ticket called BICENTENNAL COMMEMORATIVE with a drawing of FORT MACKINAC in the center of the ticket. I started collecting these passive tickets about a year ago. Needless to say my delay in collecting theses tickets means I have a very small collection. If anyone has any extra passive tickets, I would appreciate receiving them. Editor s Note Passive tickets will soon be added to the guides as a separate ticket category, along with Pull- Tabs, separate from the scratchers. Lotologist Monthly 5

In last month s newsletter Glen Faulhaber ran a multi-page ad describing the LUMTEC Limited Partnership. There was one error we wanted to correct: The final line of the first paragraph of the "guidelines" relating to "Grandfathering in" these guidelines was left off. This sentence should read "As clarification, these guidelines and the items shown will be "Grandfathered in" for initial LUMTEC Members, as will the 2014 "elumt" price schedule." To further clarify his proposal, Glen has provided the following information: Also, my original article might have been somewhat vague in explaining the differences in benefits between Class 1 and Class 2 Members. A quick reminder that only those "Founding Members" who have their checks to me by August 31, 2014 will be considered as Class 1 Members. Those (if any) whose checks are received during September 2014 will be considered as Class 2 Members. However, if a Class 1 Member decides to increase his investment in LUMTEC and makes an additional payment during September 2014, such increase will also be considered as Class 1 Membership. Note that the "Selling Privileges" shown in my original article for a $1,000 Membership (60%, 50%, 45%, 40%, 35%, 30% and 25%) are for Class 2 Members. Class 1 Members will receive a 5% increase from the Class 2 Members (65%, 55%, 50%, 45%, 40%, 35%, and 30%). They will also receive a 5% increase in buying privileges. If a Member (either Class 1 or Class 2) sells any of their shares (in $1,000 multiples subject to Directors' approval) such shares will become Class 2 shares with no selling privileges. However, if a Member passes any or all of their shares to their Beneficiary, such shares will have the same privileges that the original Partner had prior to the transfer. 18 Lotovention 2014 Display Contest The main purpose of this display contest is to give our membership a chance to show off some of their lottery collections. No matter what you collect, you must have some favorite tickets, categories or other lottery items you would like to show off. Tickets on display may be scratched, sample / voids, mint or paper. These tickets can be mixed together. It is entirely up to you. Of course there will be prizes so let your imagination run wild. There will be three basic display categories you may enter. ALBUMS - Put together an album(s) you want to show off and bring it to the Lotovention. The subject matter is entirely up to you. Your album can consist of tickets by theme, subject matter, size (mixed) or by state or country. Some sample ideas are, sport tickets, animals,tv stars, cartoons, famous people or not so famous people, transportation, types of games (bingo -Slingo) or just your favorite state or country. You decide. Your choice is not limited to the subjects suggested above. They are provided to give you some ideas just to get you started. DISPLAY BOARDS - Again, let your imagination run wild. Pick up a display board(s) at one of your favorite hobby or craft stores (Michael s, AC Moore or Hobby Lobby, Staples are four that come to mind). Good sizes would be 16" x 20" or 24" x 30" or 20"x 36" inches but they can be larger or smaller. Your tickets can be attached by using photo corners or two-face tape. It is entirely up to you. Each display should be covered with a transparent material or plastic to inhibit removal of tickets and to ensure the integrity of the display. The subject matter is entirely up to you. See some ideas listed above, but you are free to do what you wish in order to display your tickets. LOTTERY COLLECTIBLES - Lottery items you collect that are not tickets. These items can include but not limited to lottery key chains, pins, buttons, playing cards, scratching coins or any other give away items from the lotteries you may have collected. How you display them is up to you but many of the hobby stores listed above have various shapes and sizes of display cases or frames. Of course you may make up one of your own. A few display rules 1. Anyone entering a display must be a paid up member of GLCS. 2. Each display shall have the name of the entrant on the back of the display or album. This information shall be covered with opaque paper or card. 3. Voting for each category will be done by secret ballot. Ballots will be provided to everyone by the chairperson. 4. Voting maybe done by anyone attending the Lotovention. You do not have to be a member of the GLCS to vote. 5. Entrants may enter no more than three (3) displays in any category. 6. The chairperson wishes it to be known that all reasonable care will be taken to safeguard displays, but neither the chairperson nor GLCS assumes any responsibility, either legal or moral, for their safeguard or integrity. Good Luck to Everyone! Lotologist Monthly 16
