3 Editor s Desk Greetings Lotologists! Thanks to all of you who voted in the election. I d also like to thank Arthur Rein for his service as President of the GLCS. Hopefully Arthur will keep those monthly ticket run articles coming so we can all keep up with his ticket hunting adventures! I always welcome articles about lottery-related subjects. Have you researched a particular niche of Lotology? Tell us about it! Send in a draft article and get published! If you have images to include with your article, even better! If you re not a computer whiz, just postal mail me the article and include the ticket references. I ll take it from there. A few questions have come up recently about how the official GLCS ticket list is managed. It all starts with Ron Moermond s excellent work compiling the list of new tickets and releasing it on a monthly basis. It s not just Ron s effort though, as many members keep him updated with tickets and information. Nothing is better than a local resident who can see what is being sold and report on it. The official GLCS ticket information is available to members through various methods: Published as a monthly update in each issue of Lotologist Monthly Available online by visiting Lotterycollectors.com, and selecting Ticket Guides Requesting word and excel formatted lists, available by subscription from Mark Chandler Online at Lotology.net for complete lists in various sort methods (game# or GLCS ID) Steve Gilbert has already announced the next Lotovention, located at the same hotel as the 2014 event. This is a great place to come and meet other ticket collectors and to see more lottery tickets than you can imagine! If you ve never attended, plan to do so in 2015! 4 President s Report By Arthur Rein As some of you know I live in New York but I work in a supermarket in Connecticut. My daily trips start out very early in the morning when I go to work and end very late at night when I leave from work. Because of this I do very little ticket hunting when I m in Connecticut. Besides, I do have a good trader that keeps me up to date on Connecticut lottery tickets. The other day I stopped for gas along the Connecticut highway and discovered that the store there sold lottery tickets. I couldn t help but notice a small LCD screen was flipping through different pictures promoting the lottery. One picture showed the current Powerball jackpot while another showed the current Mega Millions jackpot. There were pictures for the daily numbers game and their lotto game. Some of the many different instant scratch off tickets that were for sale were also featured on this LCD screen. I noticed one screen promoted an instant scratch off game with the Three Stooges theme and that there were 16 different scenes in the game. I knew that Connecticut had several games previously with this theme and number of scenes so I just figured it was for an old game, especially after I tried to buy the tickets but was told that they didn t have any. Later that day I visited the Connecticut lottery web site and learned that it was a new game, having been released in August. Unfortunately the web site did not have a description for each of the scenes. I then contacted Mary Martin, #783, because I knew she too had a Connecticut connection as evidenced by the large number of Connecticut sample voids she brought to the last Lotovention. I was hoping she had either a sample void set or at least a scratched set for me. She was surprised that there were 16 tickets in the set as she only had 12. I then contacted our ticket compiler, Ron Moermond, #384, who also thought there were 12 tickets. Ticket Run. The only way to really find out how many tickets were in the set was to make a ticket run to Connecticut. I planned my ticket run for my next day off. As much as I love making ticket runs they aren t fun after working a 12 to 14 hour day. Besides, if there were 16 tickets to the set, and if there were four scenes to a book like there were in the past, then I would have to spend a lot of time and miles on this ticket run finding all the sets. The first store I visited just over the Connecticut border had the first four tickets. I knew that I should buy extra tickets so that I could send Ron and Mary the tickets they needed but I wasn t sure what they needed. I thought about purchasing 12 tickets which would give me three full sets but I decided to tempt fate and purchased 13. This was insurance against the first or last ticket being torn. At least the first and last ticket would be the same scene. I decided not to scratch the tickets there but wait until I got home. The second lottery store I went into had the second set. Unfortunately it would take several more lottery store visits before I could find the third set. In some stores I could see which of the Three Stooges tickets were for sale as they were in those plastic holders. If I needed them I would buy them. If I had them already I would just leave the store. In some stores I couldn t see which tickets were available so I purchased one ticket. On both occasions I had the ticket and left. Connecticut is one state that sells instant scratch off lottery tickets in supermarket vending machines. A driver s license is required to unlock the machine to prevent minors from buying tickets. Being from New York I had never tried buying tickets from these machines because I figured my driver s license would not unlock the machine. However, one machine showed that it was selling the Three Stooges tickets so I tried my driver s license and was surprised to learn that it did unlock the vending machine. The ticket that came out was one that I had. I was eventually able to find the fourth set and headed home. I later found out which tickets Ron and Mary needed and sent them their missing tickets but not before I had to make another ticket run to Connecticut because some of the tickets they needed were winners. This second ticket run was more psychological because I had to remember which stores I purchased the winning tickets in so that I could purchase the same tickets I needed. I love ticket runs!!!! Also, along with Bill Pasquino and Jim Sheridan they hosted a table at a paper hobby show in order to publicize our hobby. Because of his many world famous collecting road trips he has sent thousands of tickets to Ron Moermond to be listed. He has also written many columns and letters for the newsletters along with sponsoring several contests to promote the hobby and club. After each Lotovention he puts together goodie boxes to be mailed out to members who request them. And finally, Thank You Arthur for always being there for me. For the past four years I have served as your Vice President and even though I have been there to help you, you have always been there to help and support me and your other officers. I know you are not going anywhere and will always be there to help and support the club. With the holiday season upon us there will be many new tickets being issued. Ron Moermond needs your help and support each and every month to keep our club s listing of new tickets up to date. Besides collecting those new tickets for yourself, please send one of each off to Ron to be listed. He cannot do it all himself. He needs your help and support each month. 6 New York Passive Tickets Passive Lottery Tickets #10 of 14 New York - by Steven Gilbert New York State has issued about 50 known varieties of Passive tickets. Included in this count are $ Olympic tickets. The first activity of passive tickets in New York began in June This was a $1.00 Lottery Receipt ticket. It had an 8 - digit number in the upper right hand corner. The month and year appeared under this number and drawings were held in the middle of the month. The next ticket like this added three chances to win NY Lottery Receipt The first 50 - cent ticket was issued in November 3, These tickets had a 7 digit number with each ticket having drawings of Niagara Falls and the skyline of New York City on them in three colors blue red & green. New York continued to issue different 50 - cent tickets for the next several years. In 1974 they changed to a red black and blue ticket New York Game In 1979 they continued with a game called The Weekly Game. This was also a 50 - cent tickets but this time they had a stub on the right hand side Empire Stakes Holiday Issue New York continued to change their games this time with a ticket called The 1,000,000 Playoffs. These tickets had 15 winning numbers with 4 bonus numbers. `1978 $1,000,000 Playoffs New York continued to add games with different prices. They had several $3.00 games and $2.00 games. One game even cost $2.50 with a July 4 th drawing date. In 1980 the XIII Olympic Winter Games were in Lake Placid, NY. Tickets for these XIII winter games were issued in sets of winter sports with 7 drawing dates that covered a period of 21 months. The sports featured on the tickets were the Luge, the Biathalon, Speed Skating, Hockey and the Bobsled. I do not have any of these Olympic tickets in my 1972 NY Summer Special collection.
