August 3, 2008 Dear Members, Finally the smoke is cleared up and it s safe to go outside for much needed yard work It seems that everything including the weeds have grown at least a foot already. At this time last year we were preparing to leave for Dawson City, Yukon, for the World Gold Panning competition. Now it seems so long ago. A lot of changes going on with the U.S. and the World Championships and Don will have this information in his letter. It has been great weather and Don is doing so well and back to work while still being careful not to stress the left arm. The mine crew drilled some 22 holes on Wednesday and today they completed the round with 26 holes and were able to blast the face wall again. It seems that it was months ago that we blasted last, but only 2 months have passed and the shot is beautiful. So life here at the Robinson s is back on the mining track! The Foresthill Heritage Celebration, 8/30 & 8/31, Labor Day weekend, is truly just around the corner. We will be setting up our Championships, panning, raffle, membership, tents and tubs on Friday 8/29. Many of you try to come in on Thursday afternoon so you will be here early Friday. It is a beautiful park and free to our volunteers. We just need to know who and how many trailers, tents, trucks, campers you will bring in. Don or I will be there to let you into the back private area for camping after 2:00pm on Thursday. We will need all the help you can give. Leone and Ken Gardner have retired so I will need help with the raffle. Just show up and help where ever you can. Bill and Carol Bowman have really been wonderful to help us for all these years. Bill is our Championship Coordinator, Boss, and the final word on anything, so he will be looking for timers. Don is the Big Man with the White Hat that keeps things moving and organized, or so we let him think. Please sign up at our next meeting so we know you will be there. It is always a fun, busy and active event...but the more help we have the more we can enjoy! I know that several of our members that live far away that cannot make it due to health and cost of fuel. We will miss you and look forward to seeing you hopefully at the Outing at our place, 10/31 to 11/2. Something new for our members this coming meeting night will be an ice cream social. Dennis at Pioneer Mining suggested this and Red Hats will do the honors of serving the ice cream. We will have a lot to cover so the meeting will begin with a break for the ice cream later. We sent an to ask our members to bring some cookies to share with the treat. Thank you to our special members that have made this possible and to our Red Hat s for their help. We are again asking that every one write to the Governor about stopping the Trailer bill (2008) 1032 that has been added to the budget that is attempting to stop all dredging in California. Don did send out an to everyone alerting you to this on 7/13. If you need more info go to Jerry Hobbs, and sign on to help Jerry fight this again. The Public Lands for the People Inc. is a 501c-3 non profit org. and you can send help to them at 7194 Conejo Dr., San Bernardino, Jerry is also advertised in the International Caifornia Mining Journal and updates us all on what is going on. This is a serious time for our dredgers and prospectors. It seems that everyone is wanting to close us out of the public lands and rivers. Don t expect that other people will fight this fight. There are fewer and fewer that have the resources to do this anymore. Let s all protect our rights to use our pubic lands, starting now. Pick up your copy of the ICMJ at Pioneer mining. On page 5 there is a letter from Scott Harn, Editor/Publisher regarding the article Eight reasons to release oil from the strategic petroleum reserve by Daniel J. Weiss. Scott notes that the high cost of fuel is negatively impacting all of us. Whether you are runninng a mining operation or just driving to a river to run your dredge, you ve seen your expenses jump dramatically due to the escalating price for a barrel of oil. Daniel J. Weiss provides a viable solution to reign in the price of oil. I think it s time to say enough is enough. Thank you Bill and Kathy Percy for your help in preparing the gold for the Championships. We will miss you! Leona, my raffle lady, you will be missed also and I cannot thank you enough for all your help. We have had a lot of fun over the years, Bless you and Ken. Anne & Tom Brown will be helping at the raffle but they will need help. Our metal detecting event that was run last year by FMDAC has been cancelled so we will be looking for someone to help with the detecting. I am hoping the Sacramento Valley Detecting Buffs will be on hand for questions. Just show up and wear your badge or name tag and help us where needed. Ray Dodds has built us a new stand to carry our brochures at the membership area. Thanks Ray!

Goldhounds at Pennyweight Bar and beyond July 19, 2008 (photos by Don) First row, left to right: Gordon Lindholm, Peter Stephenson, Ron Mills, Steve Morrissette, Tony McNamara, Ken O Conner, Mike Slavensky Second row, left to right: Bill Greymont, Brian DiMuzio, Joyce and Cliff Smith, Rick Mills, Bob Briel, Ray Dodds, Ray Morrisette, Bob Nordhausen, David Mraz, Gary and Jerri Graves, David Schonover. Twenty-one Goldhounds made this trip on Saturday July 18 th. This was a super outing with most staying at Pennyweight Bar (because they were finding some nice gold) and a few headed on up-stream with me to do some more prospecting. The hike to Pennyweight took about 35 minutes and we all got there in good health! We started working the high pay-streak there and everyone was getting gold right off the bat. Some really nice flakes were showing up, with lots of other smaller color. I wanted to go on upstream and possibly cross over the river to check out an area that we had not been to, and I waited about an hour before I left Pennyweight Bar to do that. I had a few Hounds go further with me, but most stayed on Pennyweight since the gold was looking good. Bob Nordhausen s gold recovery

Further exploration upstream yielded color but nothing to brag about. We did cross over the river to another bar but the gold there was very light. By the time we returned back through Pennyweight everyone had already left. The weather had gotten really hot and I m sure that helped those at Pennyweight to head our a little earlier than normal. I received several s saying the gold at Pennyweight continued to be really good. There is a lot of territory left there as well. The difficulty is carrying the panning material a long distance because the pay area is well up on the river bar. Crew panning at Pennyweight Bar Gary and Jerri Graves. Now Gary has the right idea! 7 Hello Goldhounds, California State and U.S.National Championships From Don R. Our California State Championships are fast approaching, and we need to get prepared for a State and a National Championship. I ll cover the details of this later. We will be setting up our tents and everything we do on Friday August 29 th. For those of you who are planning on camping and staying at the Memorial Park, you can come in on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 PM, or any time thereafter, including Friday day or evening. Saturday is too late to set up at the Park. Power is not available and neither is water, so it s a dry camp. However, there are restrooms available and water from a faucet close by. Barbara Cardoza teaching gold panning (last year) We will need all kinds of help, from timers, to posting, to teaching panning and of course, competing. There are lots of jobs available. Don t worry about what you can do. Just show up! We ll work out something for you that can help us all. From a Championship viewpoint, we have some significant additions that are exciting. First, we are adding two more events which are open to everyone. This brings us in line with the World Championships. The two additions are Steel Pans and an Open Championship. Both are for all ages, and the Open for any kind of pan, including the fast Ferraris, also called flat pans; square pans, and anything else, including the kitchen sink. The steel pans will be provided and all of them will be identical. All of the other championships will be for traditional designed pans which are those common to the Western US. This would be round pans, with or without riffles, and can include steel pans if the panner wants to go that way. Modifications are OK if they are within the traditional design format. We still fall within the World Championship requirements on pan diameter and riffle size. To summarize our State Championship events, we have: One of two Women s Semi-finals under way last yr. 1. Juniors traditional designed pans 2. Beginners same as above 3. Veterans same as above 4. Women s skilled same as above 5. Men s skilled same as above 6. Steel Pans steel pans provided 7. Open All pans, including flat and square pans. 8. Teams traditional designed pans

This means that everyone can enter at least three events if they choose to. Veterans could actually enter four events. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded in all seven of the above events, and will be the California State Champions.. Now with all this said, we are also having the U.S. National Championships occurring at the same time. I want to thank Mike Okey for all his work and efforts in developing and running our previous National Championships. Without his doing all this work, all of this would be impossible. Mike set up the communications and approval process with the World Gold Panning Association (WGA), which runs all the World Men s Finals last year Championships. Mike has decided to retire and has graciously converted the Goldhounds to represent the National Championships with the approval of the WGA. This has been done and we do represent the United States. Thanks Mike, for all your efforts. So how are we going to do the State and nationals at the same time? Our U.S. Nationals are based upon the same principle as the Triathlon event in the Olympics. A point system is being established which awards points based upon the finishing position in three events that occur within the State Championships. The person with the highest point score is the National Champion in that specific category. The four National events are the: 1. Men s Skilled 2. Women s skilled 3. Veterans 4. Teams (are not scored under a point system. Details follow) Here is how it basically works for Men s Skilled, Women s Skilled and Veterans: Event Points scored in three events: Men s Skilled Open, Steel Pan, Men s Skilled Women s Skilled Open, Steel Pan, Women s Skilled Veterans Open, Steel Pan, Veteran s Teams will be handled differently. There will not be a scoring system. The top three teams who medaled in the State will advance to the Finals of the U.S. Nationals, for a head to head competition. Any style pan may be used in this National Team Championship. So how will points be scored? Here s our first pass at a scoring system within each event. Teaching panning last year First, those 12 in each category who advance from the preliminaries (Saturday) will be awarded two points.

That means any panner who gets past the preliminaries gets two points for each event they advance in. Then in the semi-finals, the top 6 who advance to the Finals are awarded additional points for their level of performance. Here s a list of the points that can be scored in each event: Level Points Top 12 2 Then additional points for the top 6: Team winners last year Gold medal 9 Silver medal 6 Bronze 3 4 th place 2 5 th place 1 6 th place 1 Therefore, each panner for the Nationals will have their total points added together, and the highest scored points for that event will become the National Champion. All this means we will have State Champions and National Champions. It is certainly possible for a panner to win both.

Get all the Gold! Beat Don at his own game! He has won 31 medals in gold panning championships, with 9 gold, 8 silver, and 14 bronze medals. He has won the U.S. National Men s Skilled Championships twice, and has medaled in every U.S. National Competition since it began in Coloma in (He has also medaled in just about every State Competition as well!). How does he do it? His video explains the exact step by step technique he uses to get the gold, in a very fast time. You can master his system and with practice can go faster than he does. Beat him in the State Championships!! This video is available at Pioneer Mining in Auburn for $ You can pick it up or order by telephone at (Tax and shipping not included). Thanks. Annie
