2 Dear Fellow Lot Owners and Friends, First of all, thanks to everybody that came out to the Annual General Meeting on Saturday. We look forward to working with both of you. We also need to recognize our outgoing Board Members who have contributed so much of their time and effort for Carefree. We have decided to change the format of the Kids Baseball Tournament a bit this year in an effort to make it more competitive for our 12 to 17 year old Carefree residents. Please don t be alarmed as we will still have some fun baseball action for our little ones as well. We plan on having a game on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 10:00am for our 5 to 11 year olds. They will be placed on teams and get to bat, run and catch the ball. We will have some of our year old residents come and help out the little ones. It should be a great time!!! On Saturday afternoon, we will start the first Carefree Teen Baseball Tournament, we are hoping to get enough players for at least three teams, and the kids would play at least two round robin games on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. The Championship game would take place on Sunday afternoon. Of course, this is all tentative based on participation numbers. If you have a teen or know a teen that would be interested in playing in the tournament, please let me know at your earliest convenience. Once we see the numbers, we can go forward with the planning of how many players on each team etc. Please contact me at sandy@carefreeresort.com to sign up your child and/or teen. 6 Gleniffer Lake Boating Society Web Site: RULES AND REGULATIONS We all detest rules, especially the ones that don t make any sense to us. Most rules are the result of someone lacking common sense and creating problems that negatively affect many others. As a result rules are put in place to protect the majority. The following are a couple of the marina regulations and the reasons that they have been put in place. Quads, ATV s, etc. are not allowed in the marina during the summer as, in the past and more than once, there have been ruts in the gravel created by ATV s. This resulted in someone having to rake the ruts out by hand not a fun job. The marina is for members and their own watercraft only. The watercraft must be registered with the marina society and the trailer must have the membership number sticker and the year (18) sticker on the tongue of the trailer in order to launch. It isn t fair to the members, who pay dues each year for the operation and upkeep of the marina, if non-members use the marina to launch. Please do not allow others to use your access card as it will result in the loss of your access for the year. NO EXCEPTIONS Make sure you have your 2 new stickers on your watercraft trailer before trying to access the marina. If you are missing your sticker(s) please me at kitsonam@shaw.ca so you aren t disappointed on the first day of launching. I need time to mail them out as I m not sure when I will get up to the lake. MEMBER WHAT S HAPPENING AT THE MARINA Install: Still hoping for a June 23rd install fingers crossed the water reaches the required level. Stay tuned. We have sold all of the old marina fingers and mains except for one finger and they have all been removed. Fill and rocks have been applied to compensate for erosion at the end of the launch ramp. Just a reminder again, if you did not receive an from me this week you may not be on my new list. If you wish to be on the GLBS list please send an to Anna Marie at kitsonam@shaw.ca. This list will also come in handy if there is an incident at the marina and we wish to notify our members. Remember the resort and the boating society are two separate entities so if you change information with the resort, please remember to inform the boating society as well. 7 Black Knot Black Knot is a fungal infection that afflicts trees. It causes damage by turning trees own branches against them. The fungus causes rapid growth of plant cells until they distort and stunt the tree. Left unchecked, the knots will spread lengthwise every year, slowly devouring their host. Black Knot Lifecycle A big reason why Black Knot spreads so quickly is that it doesn t assume its classically nasty, charcoal look until after it s gone to spore and infected the trees around it. Before that, it s easy to overlook. It spreads fastest during warm, wet springs. If you re vigilant, you ll see a brown swelling on this year or last year s growth. It will look as if the branches was stung by a bee and swelled up. Fast forward to the following spring. Now the fungus grows into a bulbous olive green knot. This is when it gets nasty. Around the time when the tree leafs out, the black knot goes to spore, with the spores typically reaching peak nastiness as the tree blooms. The more spring rain we get, the more spores we get, which the wind promptly carries to neighboring trees. Spores may emerge in the Fall is it s wet enough, but with our tendency to have dry autumns that tends not to happen. Typically, the fungus needs 6 hours of near steady rain in order to flower. Controlling Black Knot The only reliable treatment is pruning. All infected growth needs to be cleanly cut off 6-10 inches down from the knot. If the infection is widespread, this often means taking out the tree. It s a tough task but necessary for the sake of your, and your neighbours, other trees. Treat infected branches like hazardous waste, as they can spit out spores for 4 months after pruning. As you prune, keep a bleach solution nearby to sterilize your cutters after every cut. That may sound excessive, but otherwise you may be leaving trace amounts of spores on every branch the blades touch. Never prune out black knot in the spring or in wet, warm weather. The ideal time is between Halloween and the end of March, when the tree is dormant and the lack of leaves make for easy navigation. Prevention The best and most obvious way to prevent Black Knot is to clean it from your yard and, if your neighbours have it, to educate them about its seriousness in the hopes that they will do the same. DID YOU KNOW.. Any construction that would use hand tools, power tools, etc. or any tool that would be an annoyance to other owners is not allowed between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. All owners are entitled to the quiet enjoyment of the Resort. VOLUNTEERS For the Stampede Breakfast Please sign up in the office. Many cowpokes make light work!

8 GOLF CART INSURANCE As you know, we require proof of insurance for all golf carts as per policy, and have been enforcing this for a few years. Please bring in your current proof of liability insurance to the Office in order to receive your required 18 sticker. We will be looking for your name, expiry date and specification that the golf cart is in fact covered. If the insurance you submitted last year is still viable, come into the office and we will give you your sticker. Golf carts found driving around the resort without a 18 sticker will be escorted back to their respective lots, and should remain parked until the sticker has been issued. If a golf cart is caught without the appropriate sticker more than once, a fine of $25.00 will be issued to the lot owner. Repeat offenders can expect increasing penalties including having their golf cart removed from the resort. We are confident that this procedure will ensure that our Carefree community is a safer place for all residents. For more information regarding golf carts, please see current policy statements. Our Office Manager, Linda, was awarded the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association Rhonda Davis Outstanding Volunteer of 2018 out of a host of nominees from across the country. She s pictured here with her mule Rudy who placed second in the country as the outstanding therapy equine. Linda has hauled 12 different horses and worked with special riders in Olds for nineteen years. FACEBOOK Group There is an Owner administered Closed Group called Carefree Resort Families that lot owners can join and stay in touch with posts from other lot owners regarding events, activities, updates, news and anything resort related. See the groups policies as noncompliance will result in immediate removal. 9 Marcos and I can not say enough Thank You s to Chuck and Kate Somers for finding Marco s ring that we lost last year while boating. It was the new season and we even brought our quad up to take out to go look for Marco s ring. On Friday, May 18th Chuck and Kate were walking along the beach with their German Shepard. He was mentioning to Kate that someone lost a wedding band down here so keep an eye out for it. As soon as he said it he noticed Marco s ring (as it just rained) it was peaking out of the sand. This ring represents our whole life. We were devastated when he lost it. Never again will we be wearing our jewelry down there. We just want to thank Chuck and Kate. It s amazing to feel that there are still so many good people in this world. You two are truly remarkable people. To Linda for surprising us with his ring on Saturday May 20th. Thank you. We also want to especially thank Arlene in the office. She remembered last year when I posted on Carefree families that Marco and I were the ones that lost the ring. Thank you so much. You guys just made our whole season. We feel overwhelmed with emotion how amazing you guys are. Thank you! Thank you! Love the Munoz Family.
