1 A Nationally Recognized Leader in Urban Arts 16 South Elm Street, Waterbury, CT (203) (203) Fax March 2018 Lauren F. Elias, Principal Jennifer A. Deeley, Assistant Principal Joseph E. Nole, Assistant Principal Maria P. Stasaitis, Ed. D., Assistant Principal Greetings Parents and Guardians, Principal s News There are many happenings here at WAMS for the month of March. The most important of them all would be the start of this year s standardized testing. According to TeacherVision, to ensure that students perform at their highest level, it is suggested that parents/guardians review the following with their children: Have a Positive Attitude - It might be tough, but you can do it! A positive attitude goes a long way toward success. The Night Before - Get to bed early. Remember, your brain and body need sleep to function well, so don't stay up late! The Morning of the Test - Did you know that you think better when you have a full stomach? So don't skip breakfast the morning of the test. Test Time - Make sure you read the instructions carefully! Neatness Counts - Be sure that your writing is legible and that you erase your mistakes. For machine-scored tests, fill in the spaces carefully. I'm Done! - Not so fast - when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you're not done yet. First, check the clock and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right answer in the wrong place or skipping a question). Spend the last remaining minutes going over the hardest problems before you turn in your test. Testing dates and schedules will be released soon and sent home to all parents and guardians. Thank you. - Lauren F. Elias, Principal Helpful Numbers Attendance counselor, Cindy Ferreira HS Guidance We are delighted to welcome Dr. Maria Stasaitis and Jennifer Deeley to our WAMS Administration team!! The powerful words of Martin Luther King were expressed through dance by WAMS dance department Choreography students in Mrs. Wirth Santulli s class. Performed and choreographed by Jacyntha Adouko, Tyra Campbell, Elisia Holmes and Arriahna Markay. WAMS dancers energize the crowd as they perform!!! Dance in Africa is integrated into everyday life. It is an expression of life and can be seen at at social, religious and cultural events. Communities gather together to dance for the birth of a baby or the death of a loved one. Dance is passed down through generations and often tells a story or teaches a lesson. The WAMS dancers performed a dance at the Black History Month celebration that was a compilation of African movements designed to expose the students to the rhythms of Africa. Special thanks to Jacyntha Adouko and her family for contributing traditional African steps from their culture and for naming our dance, "Akwaba", which means Welcome. Students pictured are all enrolled in Jazz dance at WAMS. Jazz dance has its roots in African traditions. Through this performance the dance students had the opportunity to experience the rhythms and movements of a culture that had and still continues to have a great impact on the world of dance. Akwaba was performed under the direction of Patricia Gray and Cheryl Wirth Santulli
