1 676 Old Cleveland Road Camp Hill QLD 4152 Subscribe: Phone: Fax: Upcoming Events 24 P&C Meeting 7:00pm Book Character Parades P-2 September 1-2 Principal s Report Father s Day Stall In the past two weeks there has been such energy in the school from our fantastic 2016 Fair, district competitions for a large group of our students, the release of our NAPLAN results and last weekend the National Aerobic, Cheer, Dance and Glee competition. Our community is so very vibrant and enjoys a highly diverse range of opportunities for all students NAPLAN On Wednesday the annual NAPLAN results were released to schools. While the annual test is a moment in time assessment of key learning skills and does not provide a full assessment of a student s strengths and attainments, it is a measure of learning attainments for students in Years 3 and 5 (at primary school). The Camp Hill test results were extremely pleasing and showed some great attainments for our Year 3 and 5 students. Well done to all our students; to their teachers who provided such rich and rewarding learning programs (from Prep); to all support staff who enabled students to achieve their personal best; to their parents who supported each student in their learning journey and during this period of assessment and to every member of the Camp Hill team who developed and delivered the school curriculum. This data, amongst others, affirms the quality of our learning programs. National Aerobic, Dance, Glee and Cheer Competition The recent three day National competition for the Dance, Glee, Cheer and Aerobics teams provided an excellent opportunity for our students to demonstrate their talent and commitment to their sports and teams. This program is one of the highlights of our extra-curricular programs and includes up to 120 students (boys and girls) from Years 3 6. Every Camp Hill competitor represented our school at an exceptional level and as a school community we are very proud of them. I have to compliment the students for their commitment to their training program the combination of talent and diligence to a personal training program requires significant effort and commitment all of which our students have demonstrated. These activities, like all extra-curricular activities, require considerable support from each student s family and the Camp Hill support team are a very dynamic and generous group. And, of course, no activity can occur without coaches. The Camp Hill staff who led this program give so generously of their time (so many afternoons, weekends and evenings) to the program to ensure that every student is offered a program at a national level. Without these coaches this program would not occur and I would publicly like to say a massive THANK YOU to each member of the school staff who has gone the extra mile.

2 Athletics Program Camp Hill is very fortunate to have talented physical education staff, who take every opportunity to use our extensive grounds and facilities in their programs. The winter athletics program is one that every child participates in, with the goal being to make their personal best. This year a large number of students represented the school at the District competition and nine students have moved to the next level of the competition well done to every member of the team. The school Cross Country events (Junior and Senior) occurred on Monday 8 and again, every student had the opportunity to compete and enjoy their run around our beautiful grounds. At least one student told me that they were also looking for our koalas in the trees. This annual event was well supported by our families and I know that the students very much enjoyed sharing the event with their supporters (class mates or family members). National Science Week National Science Week is here and our Key Teachers, Mrs McMillan and Mrs Bryden have planned some very exciting activities for all Camp Hill students please watch out for information from your class teachers. A hint: Investigation can occur anywhere and anytime. Book Parades The annual Camp Hill Book Parades for the Junior Campus will occur in Week 7 (22 26 ). Please read on below in our Library News or watch for information from your child s class teacher for this very valued annual event. I know that many of the students are well into planning their book character outfits for their parade. School Attendance Research clearly shows that attendance is directly related to achievement for all students, and in particular those with some barriers to learning. School provides both a learning environment as well as a social environment where our young people develop skills and understanding for their future. Our school benchmark is 95% attendance, every day, for all year levels. We have nearly reached that goal and I encourage all families to support their children s participation in learning at school. The school is keen to move to 96% in The school is abuzz with activity at the moment with many exciting programs occurring across all learning areas. I commend the staff for their ingenuity and professional skills in providing such rich and rewarding programs. Our students are keen and active learners. I hope everyone continues to enjoy the splendid weather. Best wishes Deborah Driver Deputy Principal s Report Children s Safety The school is a busy place before classes start and after school finishes. Our priority, as always, is for all students and visitors to our site to be safe. Therefore we have a range of procedures and rules to help all involved. We ask parents and visitors to work with the school in ensuring the following: they park in designated spaces, safely and legally they obey the road rules (including not parking on yellow lines) and the rules for using the Stop, Drop and Go they use the supervised crossings correctly they bring children into school from Prep to Year 2, and collect their children in the afternoon from underneath the buildings they are responsible for their children until classes start at 8.55am, and after school finishes at 3.00pm they are responsible for their younger siblings, who are not school age, at all times they do not allow their children to use the playground equipment before or after school they do not allow children to climb trees or destroy school property, including trees and plants such as the mulberry tree We would also like to ask parents to NOT allow their children to play chasing games and games with kicking balls outside the Junior School office on the rubber matting. This is particularly important in the mornings when the OSHC staff are trying to organise their children before school on the rubber matting. Children are able to go up to the oval and play with their parent s supervision, or sit quietly underneath the buildings. These measures have been put in place to ensure safety of everyone. Please ensure you have an eye on your child. Aerobics, Dance, Glee and Cheer On Sunday, 28 we will be showcasing all of our 2016 Aerobics, Dance, Cheer and Glee teams and soloists. We invite everyone to join us from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the Ferguson Road Hall. Entry is a gold coin donation. All of this year s teams and soloists will be performing. If you are interested in finding out about the program this is a great opportunity to come along and see what we do. Seventy-nine children competed at the National Titles at the Gold Coast on 5, 6 and 7. On Friday Sophia G was awarded 3 gold medals (Future Legend Solo, Jazz Audition and Lyrical Audition) and a silver medal (Hip Hop Audition). Saturday saw our Aerobics and Glee teams and soloists compete. Our Stage 1 team was awarded a silver medal and our Stage 2 and Future Legends (Small) teams came away with bronze medals. Charlotte C picked up a gold medal in her Aerobics Audition and Zevanita P, a bronze in hers. Our 2

3 Primary Glee team was awarded a gold medal along with our Secondary Glee team (made up of ex Camp Hill students). Sunday was our Dance and Cheer teams' big day. Our Cheer team was awarded a bronze medal. (They looked fantastic with their new poms thanks to a very generous family donation.) We were awarded gold (Gypsy) and silver (Tarantella) in the International section; silver in the Classical and Jazz sections and a bronze in the Lyrical section. Jayde B 800m Brock R 800m Cross Country Carnivals Habits of the Mind Being persistent means: finding ways to keep going to reach a goal to keep trying even if something is very hard to do not quitting! The Prep children reflected on things they found hard to do which required them to not give up and hang in there. Here are some of their challenges: building sandcastles using a knife and fork not getting angry when my brother comes into my bedroom riding without training wheels scoring a goal for my soccer team tennis monkey bars roller skating drawing A short animation we watched about a particularly Persistent Pink Pig put a smile on each child s face and my own, as we watched him try to reach his goal and not give up! Sports News District Athletics Results Congratulations to our 35 athletes who recently competed at the Lytton District athletics at Villanova Park. All students gave their best effort and many students had personal best results. We had exceptional success, with 9 students gaining selection in the Lytton District team.
