2 Principal s Report Grade 4/5/6 Urban Camp For students intending to go on the 4/5/6 camp to Melbourne in November, the expression of interest form and a $50 deposit are due back to school by Friday the 8th August. Active After School Communities (AASC) A reminder that Active After School Communities commences on Wednesday 6th August with Dance for students in grades 3-6 and on Thursday 7th August with basketball for the Grades Prep 2. Sessions run from 3.30 to All places are now full. Leave & Staffing Over the next four weeks Judy is taking long service leave and travelling overseas. She flies out tonight on her way to Norway. Having returned from my extended break I will be taking on the Principal role whilst Judy is away. Eleanor Rees will continue to take my regular classes at least until Judy returns in late August. Harvey Scott Week 4: P-Grade 2 on Wednesday lunchtime. Week 5: Grade 3-4 on Wednesday lunch time. Week 6: Grade 5-6 on Wednesday lunch time. Grand final will be in Week 7! Winners will perform in assembly in Week 7. PFF MEETING There will be a PFF meeting on Friday August 8th in the staffroom. All are welcome to attend. Bus Tickets Bus tickets for term three are now on sale and can be purchased from the office. 2

Friday 5 th September is Footy Colours Day. Wear your teams colours and bring a gold coin donation to raise funds for Children s Cancer Research. Book Report My Sister The Vampire By Sienna Mercer My Sister The Vampire are such funny books. They are about two long lost twins that found each other. One is a vampire and the other a human and they have to do everything to keep their secret safe. I think that most of the older students would enjoy reading these books. By Tamsyn, 4/5A 3

4 The Kangaroo And The Porpoise The Kangaroo And The Porpoise was compiled by Pamela Lofts but originally told by Agnes Lippo. It is from the aboriginal community of Belyuen and first published in It is a great book because it has a good lesson and also explains how these animals got some of their features. Basically what happens in this story is there is a kangaroo and a porpoise. The kangaroo asks the porpoise to baby-sit her baby while she is hunting for bush tucker. The porpoise agrees to do this but only on one condition: that the kangaroo returns the favour and does the same thing. When the porpoise comes back the kangaroo will not give her baby back. They have a fight with some sticks. The kangaroo s arms get cut to short to stumpy sticks and the porpoise gets a hole in her head. The animals in this story act kind of like aboriginals in that they go out hunting. They ate like humans too. When the kangaroo goes hunting she hunts for goanna, emu and collects yams. The illustrations in this story are painted with non-aboriginal paints by the people at Belyuen. They make me feel joyful and excited every time I gaze at them. One of the pictures is of them at night and the kids have given a great impression on the dark, deep, sea-blue sky around them. I believe that the teller was trying to explain to aboriginal people how kangaroos got their stumpy arms, and how porpoises got their water spouts. Also the kangaroo s baby, when porpoise threw it away, turned into a white frog. Also, he still lives in the Pandanus trees today. This is a great picture book packed with all sorts of feelings. By Hayden The Echidna and the Shade Tree The Echidna and the Shade Tree was first told by Mona Green. It was first published in Western Australia in I think it is a great book that stands out. I especially like the very detailed story line and illustrations. I like the detail that shows it is a hot desert. The Echidna got upset because he got the scraps of food so he stole the shade tree. I believe that the author was telling us that it isn t always right to treat people poorly. I think it is a great story to tell to treat people nicely. By Caleb By Eloise 4 DUNBI THE OWL BY PAMELA LOFTS Dunbi the owl is a great book because it has a lesson; treat people how you want to be treated. In the story there are some Aboriginal people. They see the first owl in the world called Dunbi so they go over and bounce him into the air as well as they pull out his feather and put sharp spinifex grass into him. The people said use your new wings. This story teaches the bullies around the world that you should be nice to all the people you know and the people that look sad and down. I really like how Pamela Lofts put really good illustrations as well as the right colours and explained the book really clearly. I believe that Pamela Lofts is saying just because you re new, you still can fit in.

5 How the Birds Got Their Colours How the Birds Got Their Colours was by Mary Albert. Pamela Lofts retold it and published it into a book. Pamela Lofts s amazing colours fill every page and it gives me a feeling that this book is going to be interesting. In this book a dove hurts his foot on a stick and it starts to bleed. A parrot pecks the sore and it BURST! Colours explode out of the dove s foot. Every bird gets splashed with paint except the crow because he wasn t near the dove. The reason for this is because he didn t want to help the dove s foot stop bleeding. That might be how the birds got their colours and why all crows are black. The illustrations by Pamela Lofts are so spectacular. The reason for this is because of the big variety of colours such as bright yellow, violet purple and blood red. When I read this book I felt disappointed in the crow because he didn t help the dove. If I was the crow I would try to help the dove and its bleeding foot. I believe Mary Albert wrote this story to tell everybody that if you help someone good things happen to you and if you don t help someone, nothing happens to you. This story also had great illustrations and bright paintings. This is why I liked How the Birds Got Their Colours. By Jamie When the Snake Bites the Sun I liked the story because it tells a story about the snake that bites the sun that crosses earth to make things grow. Next a sneaky snake creeps up to the sun to stop things from growing, by biting the sun and makes the sun very ill. The snake is the thing that makes all the stuff happen. In the story the snake biting the sun is now taking over Earth. It all started with a sun in the sky. The sun is floating across countries in Earth, day by day. Across/behind the sun is a snake ready to bite him and giving him a disease. The sun cried and went aah! Darkness went in him and the sun will never go up again. I believe that this book has nice and bright colours just like Aboriginal colours. All of the trees, bushes, houses and islands died/got rotten and all the places were sick including the sun. By Domonic How The Kangaroos Got Their Tails. This book was told by George Mungo Lirrmiyarri. In this story there was a kangaroo that lived in a small country. The hills were painted red the trees were green and the kangaroo was dark red. There was a little kangaroo. He told the big kangaroo to put its hands in the big hole. The red kangaroo was hungry so he found apples from an apple tree and the small kangaroo had some apples too. The kangaroos found a different hole so the small kangaroo said put your hands in the hole. He pulled out lots of spiders and said Ugh! so loud. Then the big kangaroo put his hands in the hole again and pulled out more spiders. The big kangaroo was wild that the small kangaroo tricked him. They went over to a white gum tree. They both got sticks. And then they started to fight with their sticks. Each of them were hitting each other. The big kangaroo lost its tail and the little kangaroo s tail got cut off by the big kangaroo. So both of them went back to their own country. By Andrew 5

6 HOOP TIME COMPETITION Last Friday, 25 th July, twenty-three year five and six students competed in Basketball Victoria s Hoop Time competition at the Warragul Leisure Centre. Three teams represented Drouin South, one Future Stars and two as Rookies. Team members are listed below. 7 Due to some schools withdrawing a few days prior to the competition the fixture for the day was changed dramatically from previous years. This resulted in all three teams playing many teams at a higher level than had originally been anticipated. However, to their credit they accepted this graciously and played to the best of their ability. All Drouin South players demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the seven or eight matches played despite the fact the number of scheduled matches made for a challenging day. The Future Stars team earnt the right to play in the Semi Final match against Longwarry. The improvement in their team work, passing, defence and shooting throughout the preliminary rounds saw them able to put team tactics into place and defeat Longwarry for the opportunity to play in the Grand Final. Excitement abounded with this prospect. Churchill North was to be their opposition. Our team played extremely tight defence in the first half and Jack led the scoring for the team to be down by only three points at half time. During the second half the endeavour of all players could not be questioned. They ran hard and continued to play as a team. While Churchill North were ultimately deserved winners all present witnessed the determination and sportsmanship of the Drouin South team. Well done to all. Across the day the following students scored points for their respective teams: Josh 6, Jack 21, Bailey 2, Joel 6, Ray 8, Tyra 8, Tegan 4, Dominic 2, Declan 2, Cooper 7, Tarkyn 4, Dean 2, Sky 1, Lachlan 10, Daryl 2 and Andrew 1. The players and I wish to thank Mrs Eacott for assisting with transport and team management in addition to Mrs McConville, Mr and Mrs Day and Mrs Scotland for their much needed help with transport and scoring. 8 Book Report Wings Of Fire By Tul T. Sutherland I think this is a great book for people that like dragons. It has great adventures and very good descriptions so I recommend this book to people who enjoy adventures and dragons. By Jay, 4/5B 8
