1 Ingersoll Pipe Band Volume 6 Issue 3 November 2016 According to PM Jack and DM Gail, we had better be ready for all those Santa Claus parades coming up in November and December! So get out those woolies, tartan scarves, Santa hats, gloves, mitts etc. and review those Christmas tunes because November 19th (the 3 parade day) is fast approaching. But before you begin to panic, take a deep breath, relax for a few moments and look back at where the IPB has been during the warm months of September. and October. Hope you enjoy this issue! - Veronica Inside This Issue Pg Richmond News Pg. 5 - Delhi - A Washout Pg. 6,7 - Port Rowan - Bayfest Pg. 8,9 - Simcoe - Warriors' Day Pg. 10, 11 - Clean - Up / Random Pics Pg More Parades / Congratulations Pg Just for Fun Pg Classifieds / Welcome Aboard / PM Jack Pg Xmas Party / Upcoming Events Pg Robbie Burns' Supper The annual Richmond Area Good Old Days Festival is the highlight of summer for many people in southern Michigan. The festival is known for offering a wide variety of events throughout each of the four days. It was voted MICHIGAN'S BEST Small Town Festival. The festival falls on the weekend after Labor Day in September. On Sunday the organizers have "The Great Michigan Parade" which has been voted MICHIGAN'S BEST Small Town Parade by the Detroit News. The parade has a wonderful reputation for its unique entries, upwards of 25 marching bands, (including the Ingersoll Pipe Band) and fabulous floats. They estimate between 75,000 and 80,000 people view the parade. Our pre-parade host, Jamie Hooper, extended his hospitality to us once again as we relaxed ahead of the parade and tuned up. This year we were joined by two members of the Michigan Scottish Pipes and Drums, our regular friend, Christine Gatt and her piping friend, Ray. It was great to reconnect with all of them. And thanks again to Christine and her husband, who provided us with treats and water at the end of the very long parade route. After the parade at the famous Richmond Beer Tent, we had a chance to reconnect with other pipers and drummers from Michigan and Ontario bands. The Massed Band paid tribute to honour the first responders from 9/11 attacks fifteen years ago in the USA. 1

5 Almost A Parade... Delhi Fall Fest September 17th DELHI, ON - It wasn't just the pouring rain a rare sight during this drought-stricken summer that put an end to the Fall Fest parade before it could get started Saturday morning. It was the thunder and lightning that sealed the cancellation of the town ritual going back many years. Safety of the participants came first, organizers decided when pulling the plug shortly before 11 a.m. It's sad because it's a tradition for the town, parade marshal Alfie Marques said minutes after cancelling the event. You put all that work into organizing it and then it rains. Huddling out of the rain in Delhi District High School The parade, which had 27 floats lined up, was washed out. But the rest of the annual September festival in Delhi a harvest celebration that goes back decades came off as best it could. The baby contest was held at the main intersection downtown first thing in the morning before the rain hit and had 17 participants. It was a total success, said organizer Kim Earl. Some vendors who had lined the streets downtown stayed open Saturday while musicians continued to play on the covered stage throughout the day. A few brave souls on Saturday strolled the streets with umbrellas. LOOK Socializing at the Delhi Legion and waiting for Lunch - "post" the non - parade! There's always something to see downtown, said Jason Husted of Delhi, who was out Saturday morning with his wife, mother-in-law and another relative all holding umbrellas. We might as well check out what is here. We're a little upset the parade was cancelled, but you can't do everything. Murray said it was the first time in memory the parade had been cancelled, noting the OPP agreed 100 per cent the event had to be stopped for safety reasons. That the parade would get rained out was steeped in irony. The event is meant to celebrate the town's agricultural tradition and the rain has been badly needed to replenish the parched soil of area fields. If it had have held off for two hours... Marques remarked, his voice trailing off. We had a lot of people walking on floats. We didn't want them falling off. DPearce@postmedia.com - The Simcoe Reformer 5

9 Warriors Day Simcoe At the Fairgrounds Ron Adam Charlie Art Hayward, 91, of Simcoe was the guest speaker at the annual Warriors Day Parade held on Saturday at the Norfolk County Fair. Hayward was a human guinea pig for the army's chemical weapons department during the Second World War. "At age 91, Hayward remains spry, upbeat, and funny. His recalling of his time in the armed forces kept everyone laughing, particularly when he talked about his time after the war when he transferred to a parachute division. Hayward, who is known as the voice of the fair because he has done the announcing over the loudspeakers at the October event for 20 years, said although he didn't see active service like other soldiers did, it was an exciting time. Donnie He said he never considered himself to be a true war vet because he never served overseas. But on Saturday he was treated as a hero as the crowd laughed throughout his speech, clapped, and gave him a standing ovation." DPearce@postmedia.com (The Simcoe Reformer) 9

13 More Anniversary/Birthday News Recently, Piper Nancy and Drummer Harold Matthews celebrated their wedding anniversary and Nancy celebrated an important birthday! Just For Fun! Piper Laurie Marson and his wife, Carole are members of SOUP - Southern Ontario Ukulele Players in London. Recently, Laurie and Carole joined other members and performed Hallowe'en tunes at Westmount Shopping Mall! Laurie makes a great Irishman (despite the fact that he's English) and Carole really is a Top Banana! The Matthews on Thanksgiving Weekend in Collingwood Celebrating Their Anniversary Nancy and her Vino and her Comments Below - For my big 5-0, Harold and I cracked open a Vintage Chateau Matthews circa This was a bottle of wine Harold gave me for my 18th birthday. We jokingly said we would drink it when I turned 50. Well we made it and we did! It was perfectly clear, had great colour and tasted like it might kill us. So, looks like Harold s home-made brew has stayed pretty much the same - even after 32 years! Quick small sip, quick toast, quick pics and then quickly down the drain! Joanne looking "fetching" modelling one of the new Drum Skin (drumbrella) covers! Possible Hallowe'en costume? 13

14 Band "Classifieds" We had a request to start up our own IPB "Kijiji" so here goes... A Message from Pipe Major Jack Free to Good Home - Air Purifier Contact Gail MacKay at the pipe band hall Size 10 Men's Brogues for sale - $10 Contact Harold Matthews at Snare Drum for Sale - $500 Contact Harold Matthews at (PS - Harold has a "stinky old" bag for free!) Welcome! We have some new pipng students who are beginning lessons with Wilson and we welcome them aboard the IPB train! (Since we seem to have to wait weekly at the crossing for the freight trains passing through town I think the train analogy is appropriate!) Our new students are from the Woodstock and Delhi areas; we wish Ellery and Keon the best with their studies. As well, we have acquired a new drummer in our ranks, William Douglas. William is on loan to us from the Glengarry Pipe Band, a competition band from Maxville, ON. Will is studying at the Conestoga College satellite campus here in Ingersoll. Will has been on parade with us this fall and is a great addition to the drumming corps. Finally, it is great to see several of our learners now gathering at the piping table on Thursday nights and joining us in the hall for piping practice. Angus, Catherine, Christina, and Scott are advancing quickly and will soon be ready to parade with us. Practising "in the wings" are - Lois, Rob, Ethan, Cory, Dominic & Rory. No doubt we will soon need to get a bigger table to accommodate everyone. I'd like to give a warm welcome to the new learners and welcome back to everyone else too. I'll always remember the overwhelming feeling sitting at the table the first time. A new tune list is in the works. If you have a favourite or a not so favourite tune let me know and I'll put it up for consideration. Practice continues to start at 7:30 pm and end at 9:30 pm and your attendance is greatly appreciated. Just a "Heads Up" - I expect there will be more requests for the band next year due to Canada's 150th birthday. 15 The Annual Christmas Party Wanted IPB Christmas Party Talent This year the IPB will be hosting a Christmas Dinner Party Ceilidh. The evening will be full the usual feasting and award presentations + some time to share our talents. We are organizing a program full of Christmas carolling, stories, recitations, good humour jokes and musical talent. Enough of the pipes and drums! We are looking for volunteers to share their secret and not so secret talents. If you have a great joke or story you are dying to tell this is your chance to participate in the IPB open mic time (go Laurie go!!!). If you play an instrument (perhaps ukulele, accordion, clarinet, violin, guitar, keyboard - hint, hint!!) then we would love to hear a few of your favourite tunes. If you love to sing in the shower, then bring it on! The evening will wrap up with some instruction in Scottish Highland and Square Dancing. After which, we may all let loose to sing or dance with the Karaoke machine. If you have a talent or think there is one hidden inside you somewhere, please speak with Nancy Matthews to secure a spot in what will surely be a fun and memorable night!
