Tree Planting Day We met up at Queenstown Stadium, then took a long walk over to Block 23B Queen s Close. Residents put their thumbprints on the design for a 270m banner for next year s Chingay Parade. We celebrated Tree Planting Day, the start of Clean and Green Week and the completion of the Lengkok Bahru /Rumah Tinggi NRP on 3 November. In their speeches at the event, our MPs congratulated Queenstown on completing their NRP just six years after being selected for the programme. They also drew attention to the recent UN report on global warming and the dangers it poses for us. They said we must green our habits and our environment to protect the lives of our children by building a true City within a Garden. Before and after the tree-planting, we enjoyed stage performances in a big tent. All the activities were aimed at building a greener, more sustainable Singapore. A new way to play in the playground Do you worry about the decline in children s physical activity and the increase in the time they spend looking at screens? You should see the new feature, Biba, installed in the upgraded playground between Blocks 102 and 103 Bukit Purmei Road. A simple instructional sign tells you everything you need to know to play Biba games with your kids. The app you download is free and easy to use.there are new games all the time. After helping dozens of families with their Tree Planting Day and officiating at the completion of the Home Improvement Programme for Blocks 101 to 115, Mr Sam Tan went to see for himself just how Biba helps kids get more exercise. Biba takes advantage of children s love for computer games and their wonderful ability to make-believe. It s a series of digital, imaginationdriven games for grown-ups to play with three- to nine-year-olds using a smart phone in a playground. The games interact with up to six Biba markers installed in the playground. There are no electronics or moving parts. The markers are simple and the only technology that will ever require updating are the games in your phone. Every Biba game is You point your phone at the developed with a unique marker and the game loads. activity profile and follows a strict 80/20 rule that is, kids must be physi- cally active for at least 80% of the game, with only 20% of their attention ever spent with the screen. The games range from obstacle courses to treasure hunts to make believe adventures to team play. You - the parent, grandparent, maid - download the game and hold the phone through the entire game. You re the referee. Biba games seem familiar, containing elements of classic schoolyard and common screen-based games. They re easy to learn and social. Each of game taps into common make-believe scenario. For example, if a child is an archeologist in Dino Dig, they re squeezing through tubes and climbing up ladders to dusty dig sites where they can sweep, blow and chisel to unearth new bones on the phone. The child pretending to be an archeologist has to use the climber in the playground to get to the dig and then run back to you to tap the screen on your phone before they can move on to the next part. When they bring back a bone, they have to wipe it clean on your phone! It s all about fun, imaginative game scenarios that naturally call for physical activity. 2 The Tanjong Pagar Town Council

Four children trying the Confidence Course. It was very slippery, but notice the number of catchers. 5m confidence jumps at Queenstown Water Fiesta We held our annual Water Fiesta on Sunday morning, 16 September, at the Queenstown Swimming Complex. Organised by our Community Sports Club, hundreds came to participate in the very wide variety of water sports and activities offered. There were several swimming events, water telematches, flipper boarding and a Confidence Course. There were also a few land sports, such as football and mini table tennis. A highlight of this year s Fiesta You didn t have to get wet to get exercise. was the opening up of the diving tower, which is usually kept closed at our events. Here you could try three- or five-metre Confidence Jumps. Super exciting! The youngest jumper was only 9 years old! Dr Chia Shi-Lu joined in the fun at the Fiesta. Here he is, trying his hand at the mini table tennis. A photo for the album showing a few of the many volunteers who made this year s Fiesta such a success. Flinging Frisbies at the Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru Sports Carnival Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru Walk-A-Jog and Family Sports Carnival was held on Sunday, 26 August, at Delta Sports Complex. It was jointly organised by Tiong Bahru Youth Club and Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru Community Sports Club with support from the Health Promotion Board and all the Residents and Neighbourhood Committees in the division. Over a hundred came to the event, all families and friends. There was a jumping castle for the kids, a mass workout and a brisk walk. Then we played all kinds of sports like frisbee, tennis, football. We also got a goodie bag, a tee, and some small bites like popcorn and kueh tutu. Window November

We saw some clever costumes at Radin Mas s Pet Carnival Sunday morning, 12 August, was a bonding session for pet lovers, where you could exchange knowledge and share experience. It all started with a furry fun walk from Block 108 Bukit Purmei Road at 8.30am. When we got back, there was a farmers market set up at the pedestrian mall in front of Block 109 and a ton of things to do and see on the basketball court across the road. There were educational talks and workshops, a Betta fish and crayfish display, health screenings and groomings for dogs and cats, an amazing parrot talk and photo session, a pet adoption booth, many merchandise booths...and more. The big hit that morning was the the Pets Fancy Dress Competition where contestants, small and furry, not only had to show off their costumes, but also demonstrate their talents. M-MMMM Moulmein-Cairnhill Made Many Many Mooncakes Moulmein-Cairnhill grassroots leaders spent a day in January this year learning how to make snow-skin mooncakes. The knowledge they gained was put to good use on 16 September when they made the first batch of our Mooncakes with Love. With great team work, they made and packed more than 1,000 mooncakes in specially designed boxes. Then, with Mr Melvin Yong helping, delivered them to residents to celebrate the mid-autumn festival. 4 The Tanjong Pagar Town Council

Buona Vista Minister Chan joined Buona Vista residents to celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival on 23 September. Families, friends and neighbours gathered at our Community Club to share and enjoy songs, dances, games, mooncakes and the hundreds of lanterns that decorated the hall. Henderson Dawson We held the Henderson-Dawson Mid- Autumn Festival Celebration on Saturday evening, 15 September, at Bukit Merah View Square. Everyone had a great time visiting the various booths, playing games, guessing riddles, trying their hand at handicraft, eating yummy treats and choosing their balloon sculptures. The performances by our school students and partners got loud cheers from the audience and also from the patrons in the hawker centre! The children s traditional lantern walk brought back fond memories for many parents and grandparents. It was inter-generational bonding at its best! Bus Stop Bus Stop SBS Service 139 rerouted for McNair Estate Legend New Calling Bus Stops Skipped Bus Stop Skipped Route Amended Route Alternative Services 125, 130 and 145 S pore Khalsa Assn Bus Stop Map not drawn to scale From Sunday, 28 October, SBS Service 139 going towards Bukit Merah was re-routed to serve two bus stops along McNair Road and Towner Road to better serve residents living in the new developments there. As a result, Service 139 will skip a bus stop along Balestier Road. If this is a problem, you can take alternative Services 125, 130 or 145 or you can transfer between these alternative services and the amended Service 139. Window November

Our National Day Dinner Party All the MPs came to say hello... All the honoured guests were welcomed by drums and (very) young lions. First onstage were the kids who had to get home to bed early....and to shake hands... The food was great! The stage performances were wonderful. The dinner ended with everyone singing our favourite Singapore Songs.... and maybe pose for the scrap book! 6 The Tanjong Pagar Town Council

FOOD Aini Muslim Food is stall #02-14 in the Holland Drive Food Centre a stall you must try if you re fussy about your muslim food. The chili sauce is superb. The peanut sauce is not too spicy. The sambal belachan has a just-right belachan taste. The potato patties (begedil) are benchmark! We ordered Tahu Goreng ($3), Ayam Penyet ($4) and Bee Hoon Goreng with Begedil ($2.50). The last was amazing. You got perfectly cooked noodles, with prawn, fishcake, cabbage, carrots all just right plus the begedil and some sambal belachan. Open Monday to Saturday 8am to 2pm. Bukit Merah View Carrot Cake is stall #01-37 in the Bukit Merah View Food Centre. If you don t know this stall already, there s something missing in your life. You can place a $3, $4 or $5 dollar order, black or white. The white seems to be preferred for its nice, sweet, more radishy taste. But we prefer the black. The chili sauce is good too. And they cook two eggs into each plate. Remember: the best parts of this dish are the bits left on the plate when you re done. The fried pickled radish, etc. Our advice: make sure you take a spoon when you pick up your order! Open 7am to 2pm and 6pm to 1am every day. Chin Seng Cooked Food is at stall # in the Tekka Food Centre. We tried several dishes: Chicken Chop Noodle ($4), Dumpling Soup ($3), and Dry Wanton Noodle with Fried Dumpling ($3.50). All were very good, and you get a bowl of soup with each. The wantons were crisp and meaty and the chicken was crisp and tender, but the noodles were the reason we ll come here again. We strongly suggest you say with chili sauce when you order for a wonderful, flavourful taste that makes you think the noodles were cooked over charcoal! Open daily from 7am to 2.30pm. Liang Liang Garden stall #02-75 in the Tiong Bahru Market, displays 68 pictures of desserts you can order. But that s just to help you decide. They will put together any combination you ask for, really including the iceballs they still make for the schoolkids. We sampled the Durian Cendol ($2.50), a Dinosaur Ice Kacang ($2.30) and some Cheng Tng ($1.80). They were all good value, but the Dinosaur won the most fans, probably because it was the closest to your memory of ice kacang. With one big exception it was drowned in Milo! Open 10.30am to 9.30pm daily. Closed on Mondays. Refuel II Café is near the ABC market at 28 Jalan Bukit Merah. It s wellnamed. The food is hearty, plates are full, and the protein is high. So it s not cheap. The menu runs from an Espresso at $3 to Honey BBQ Ribs at $15.50 (they re very good!). It s all value for money, with air-conditioning, waiters, and a long and original menu. Warning: Read that menu carefully. Hashtag Benny is hash browns and bacon with mushrooms, salad and a poached egg but then everything is covered with maple syrup! Open weekdays from 11am to 9.30pm, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays, 10am to 9.30pm. Song Heng Fishball Noodle is stall # in Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre. If you ll accept our translation of the name as Awesomely Satisfied, then we all agree! They ve been here for over 20 years so there s always a long queue but eventually we got our three dishes: Mee Pok and Mee Kia Dry Fishball Noodle ($3) and Bee Tai Mak Soup Fishball Noodle ($2.50). Everything was great. (The chili sauce has a 53 year history!) And we learned things: Tai Mak means Sieve Eyes and if you want to takeaway your noodles, that s another 20 cents. Open Tuesday to Saturday 5:30am to 4:30pm. Window November

Your Say If you think the Town Council has done a good job somewhere, or you have a complaint, please feedback@tptc.org.sg or call the Town Council at I wrote to Tanjong Pagar Town Council this morning at 10am, with regards to retrieving an Ezlink card with lanyard that was stuck on a tree. Within 15 minutes, I got a call from Assistant Property Manager Iskandar who told me that they will try their level best to assist in retrieving the card. To my pleasant surprise, I received a call slightly past 2pm from Mr Iskandar, to tell me that the card had been retrieved from the tree and would be delivered to my home. Iskandar s effort and professional Entry Form Contest is open to all residents of Tanjong Pagar Town. All entries must be mailed before 31 December 2018 to: Quiz, Tanjong Pagar Town Council, Blk 166 Bt Merah Central # , Singapore assistance on this matter is highly commendable. I would like to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks to Tanjong Pagar Town Council, especially Mr Iskandar, for assisting me and settling my problem within hours. Warmest regards, Anish Fatimah Dear Mdm Joan, Good Morning, and thank you for your reply to my mail. Yes, on Saturday night, I went to the switchroom where the technicians were working on the faults detected, and met Mr Nick. It was definitely a tough job for them, fighting against time to get the electrical supplies restored back to the affected units. I remember seeing that Mr Nick was perspiring all over. He went up with me to check on the affected cluster units 45/47. He told me his main concerns were the Here are six zoomedin sections of pictures that appear in this newsletter. Not forgetting, he had rushed down in the midst of his dinner! His professionalism, as well as that of the technicians who managed to bring the electrical supply back within 45 minutes, are commendable! Once again, thank you for looking into this. Warmest Regards Francis Lim I would like to express my best compliments to the Tanjong Pagar Town Council management for the excellent services provided by the town council. Congratulations to the senior management of Tanjong Pagar on its good management and good choice of staff such as Mr Noorhisham and Mr Chua. Well done. Michael Koh I am a resident of Block 1E Pinnacle@Duxton and I am writing to commend Mr Sam Liew for the excellent service rendered to my family. We have given him feedback on three problems in the past year. Each time his response was swift and he took immediate action. My family deeply appreciate Mr Liew for helping us to make our environment a pleasant place to live. Thank you and best regards, Wee Me Me Mr Terence Tay s reply to me was fast. More importantly, his follow-up action with the electrician to rectify a potential safety matter at our block was just as fast. Well done to both of them!
