33 About the competition The International Music Competition Maria Canals of Barcelona which was founded in 1954 by the teacher and concert pianist Maria Canals and her husband, the writer Rossend Llates, is the doyen of Spanish music competitions. This Competition has achieved international prestige due to the winners subsequent careers and the level of excellence they attain. The Competition was accepted by the World Federation of International Music in Her Majesty the Queen Sofia is President of Honour. It is held at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, being endorsed by the World Federation of Music Competitions for the organization of the branches of piano, violin, singing, cello, chamber music, guitar, percussion and flute. Since 1954, the Competition has held over 110 branches, with over 7000 participants from 100 countries and 180 jury members from all over the world. The Maria Canals Competition Association is a non-profit organisation declared of public utility. It has the support of Barcelona s and Catalonia s civil society, who provide generous financial contributions and volunteers. Over 100 Barcelona families lend their pianos to the contestants to practice at their homes.

34 About the competition Aim of the Competition To introduce young performers into the local and international professional circuits of young performers of classical and contemporary music. To give them encouragement to promote excellence and provide all young performers with an opportunity of testing their level. To provide the population with the opportunity of becoming familiar and appreciating classical and contemporary music.

35 About the Competition Calendar Registration Those interested submit their application. Preselection Amongst the total number of applicants 80 to 100 are selected. First Meeting Day Contestants are provided with a timetable for testing the piano. They are also informed about the schedule and the pianos which will be available for practice. Opening ceremony The starting point of the Competition is an event to which all those involved in the Competion are invited: authorities, sponsors, patrons, vips, members of the jury, contestants Entry: By invitation only. First Round All contestants play for a maximum of 20 minutes. At the Petit Palau. Second Round The 18 participants who have been selected in the First Round, go on to the Second Round with a 40 minute recital. At the Petit Palau. Semifinals The 6 best classified go on to the Semifinal with a 50 minute recital. At the Petit Palau. Final Round With orchestra, each finalist playing a piano and orchestra concert. At the Palau de la Música. Concert Winners The 3 winners offer a recital to be enjoyed by the Competition collaborators. This recital is held in a different area of the city of Barcelona each year. Entry, by invitation only. Awards Ceremony This is held in the Saló de Cent at the Barcelona City Council presided by the Mayor. The awards are presented and the winners play a recital. After the Ceremony there is a dinner for the Competition collaborators. By invitation only. Other Concerts Some contestants play at schools, public institutions, private homes Winners s Concerts Throught the year, the winners will play recitals and concerts worldwide.

36 About the Competition The Competition s Promotion Competition Regulations This publication is aimed at the contestants and contains all the information necessary for theirregistration (deadlines, programmes, rules ) Registration Poster To raise awareness about the Competition amongst young performers and their teachers, posters are sent to Music Schools and Universities worldwide. Programme Outline This is the main Competition s publication. It contains detailed information on the Competition (jury members, contestants, collaborators ). Flyers We distribute flyers to further the interest of the general public in attending the Competition. Poster distribution Posters are distributed to inform and stimulate the public s interest in attending the Competition Rounds. Banners The City Council provides banners to hang in prime city locations. Stage signage Large signs are always onstage. Panels in the Palau de la Música s Foyer For a few months prior to the Competition, panels are placed at the Palau de la Música s Foyer. Sign A large placard is hung in the square facing the Palau de la Música to inform visitors. Invitation to the Opening Ceremony The Competition collaborators are invited to the Opening Ceremony. The Rounds Programme A leaflet is provided to help the public follow the contestants performances. Leaflets with information on the Competition At the Rounds, a leaflet is provided with information on the Competition. The public is invited to express their interest in receiving further information on the contest or to volunteer. Invitation to the Winner s Concert Is sent to the Competition Collaborators and other guests. The Winner s Concert Programme A programme of the Winner s Concert is published. CD recording A CD of the Final Round is recorded. DVD recording A DVD of the Competition is recorded.
