newsletter CONNECTING NEIGHBOURS. ENGAGING COMMUNITY. SUPPORTING BUSINESS WE LOVE AINTREE SPRING 2018 AINTREE COMMUNITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION ACSA LAUNCHES TO HELP GROW SPORT LOCAL PROFILE: LUX HAIR RETREAT MEET ANGIE SANT, LOCAL HAIRDRESSER DILRAJ S BUTTER CHICKEN RECIPE MEET A NEIGHBOUR WHO LOVES TO COOK REMEMBRANCE DAY AT WALK OF HONOUR WOODLEA IS SET TO OPEN THE WALK OF HONOUR Aintree Community Sports Association Inc. - Sport in Aintree In late August, a number of local residents worked together to form the Aintree Community Sports Association Inc. (ACSA). This move came after council opened Expressions of Interest for the Frontier Recreation Reserve the sporting precinct which includes the two ovals, the Pavilion, tennis courts, cricket nets, and netball courts. A number of residents who wanted to help start a united effort for the benefit of all grassroots sports decided, on the Council s recommendation, to form and incorporate The ACSA.!1
We have such great facilities here in Aintree, said Sandip, a member of the Association, and we d love to see all kinds of sporting clubs form including junior sports, womens, and mens. The Sports Association means we can all work together for the benefit of all sports in our community. Community Notice Board The ACSA saw the importance of creating a safe, inclusive place for people of all cultures, religions, genders, and abilities to participate together in sports. We really want to ensure everyone in the community has equal opportunity to play and participate in sport, commented Iqbal, the ACSA Treasurer. Already, the ACSA has seen strong interests in cricket, AFL football, soccer, and tennis, and are eager to explore opportunities around competitive and social sport in these and more. The ACSA will seek to resource and support sporting clubs as they establish and grow, helping clubs to work alongside other sports as they share and maintain our great facilities. WE LOVE AINTREE FUN RUN This will be held on Sep 16th at Frontier Pavilion at 10am. See weloveaintree.org for more info. We don t want to see certain sports prioritised over others, but want to work collectively so that all sports can grow and develop their programs as best as they can, the ACSA Board explained. The Aintree Sports Association will be hosting a Public Meeting on September 18th at 6pm in The Hub (above Go-West) and invites anyone with a sporting interest, or desire to start (or help start) sporting clubs in Aintree. We Love Local Business: Lux Hair Retreat Have you met local hairdresser Angie Sant? Angie and Corey, along with their much loved dog Pebbles, live in the Jackwood Neighbourhood of Aintree. Their home, and Angie s Hair Salon, is situated right between the Frontier Recreational Reserve and Jackwood Park. We wanted to get into the area relatively early and when looking at the Woodlea Estate, seeing the beauty of living in a community driven neighbourhood, and with such beautiful open spaces, it just seemed fitting living between both a park and the wide open space that the ovals provide. For Angie, moving into a new neighbourhood also meant the chance to work from home opening her hairdressing salon, Lux Hair Retreat, right here in the neighbourhood. I started hairdressing straight after high school, Angie said, and BINGO NIGHT This event will be held on Saturday October 20 at 6pm in The Hub, above Go-West. Contact Dilraj Sequeira chefdillu@yahoo.com WE LOVE HALLOWEEN We Love Aintree is hosting a Halloween Competition on October 31. Thanks to a number of local businesses there will be prizes for best costume and best house decorations. Contact: weloveaintree@gmail.com!2
after quite a few years in the industry I decided to open up my own business with the idea of being able to give clients the personal hairdressing experience that they deserve. In addition to services such as hair cuts, moisture repair treatments, balayage, blowaves, and keratin straightening, Angie loves to be able to offer clients natural hair care options, like ammonia free colours and shampoos based on natural ingredients. Angie says running her own business from home is her little slice of happiness. Community Notice Board WE LOVE AINTREE LOCAL DIRECTORY The We Love Aintree Neighbourhood Association wants to encourage people to shop local and support local business in Aintree. Check out the online directory & even make a listing for your business weloveaintre.org/local-directory We feel very grateful to be apart of this beautiful community, she said. Working in a home based business allows me to have flexibility in my hours. I am able to fit in clients who would not normally have the time to have their hair done due to their own personal commitments. I am able to give a quality service and meet my clients needs as much as possible, and I also get the privilege of being able to get to know my neighbours. Many businesses are opening up or relocating to Aintree as the neighbourhood grows. There continues to be a ground swell of people, across Australia, who are looking to support local business when and where they can. This localism grows the local economy as more people are encouraged to relocate their business to the neighbourhood, which in turn creates local jobs, and continues to benefit those who live here with more local choice and products available close to home. For business owners, the prospect of near to zero commuting time and perhaps even the chance to work at home is very appealing. I love the flexibility of being able to have both a work and life balance, explains Angie, being able to get out of the house between clients and walk around our beautiful neighbourhood. Its such a lovely and welcoming neighbourhood to be apart of. Angie has joined We Love Aintree in a volunteer capacity as a Neighbourhood Connector, helping to connect neighbours and promote neighbourliness in the Jackwood Neighbourhood. ACSA PUBLIC MEETING: SPORTS IN AINTREE The Aintree Community Sports Association (ACSA) is hosting a public meeting about sports in Aintree on Tuesday September 18th at 6pm in The Hub weloveaintree.org/acsa AINTREE PLAYGROUP The Aintree runs every Friday in The Hub at 10-11am. aintree-playgroup!3
Aintree Neighbours: Meet Dilraj & Melody Sequeira Community Notice Board Dilraj Sequeira, his wife Melody, along with their twin children, were some of the earliest residents of the Woodlea Estate. Dilraj and Melody moved from India many years ago as skilled migrants and have now made their home in Aintree s Arbourton Neighbourhood. We fell in love with the Woodlea Estate because of it s multicultural community, modern parks, and care of the environment, says Dilraj. I ve never seen a community so vibrant with so much respect for others. Dilraj was Senior Chef onboard the Prestigious Carnival Cruise ships in the USA, and naturally, food is a key part of life for the Sequeira family. We love cooking and always ensure the family eats food cooked at home right from scratch. WOODLEA RESIDENTS REFERENCE GROUP Woodlea is looking for Expressions of Interest to join their Residents reference group. This group of residents helps Woodlea with feedback and ideas around the Estates Development. Contact Woodlea Community Development Manager Claire Mouser: claire.mouser@woodlea.com.au With that in mind, Dilraj has shared his delicious butter chicken recipe. Butter chicken is one of the most popular Indian curries across the world and for all the right reasons, he explains. The taste of the creamy bright coloured masala with chunks of grilled chicken in it is an unforgettable one. And like its north Indian origins and name suggests, good quantities of butter go into the making of this dish! TRADITIONAL INDIAN SPORTS DAY On Sunday September 9 from 12pm, a Traditional Indian Sports Day will be held at Ian Cowie Reserve, in Rockbank. Get a taste of traditional Indian sports like Kho Kho, Sthapu, Langri Taang, and traditional Indian food. Enquiries should be made to Inderdeep Thapar at Melton Council. inderdeept@melton.vic.gov.au!4
Dilraj Sequeira s Butter Chicken Ingredients: 400 grams Boneless chicken cut into 1½ inch pieces 1 tablespoon of Lemon juice 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chilli powder Salt to taste 2 tablespoons of butter For marinade: 1/2 cup of Yogurt 2 teaspoons of Ginger paste 2 teaspoons of Garlic paste 1/2 teaspoon of Kashmiri red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon of Garam masala powder 2 teaspoons of Mustard oil Salt to taste For Makhni Gravy 2 tablespoons of Butter 2 Green cardamom pods 2 Cloves 2-3 Black peppercorns 1 inch piece of Cinnamon 1 teaspoon of Ginger paste 1 teaspoon of Garlic paste 1/2 cup of Tomato puree 1/2 teaspoon of Red chilli powder 2 tablespoons of Sugar 1/2 teaspoon of Kasoori methi 1/2 cup of Fresh cream Salt to taste Method: Step 1 Apply a mixture of red chilli powder, lemon juice and salt to the chicken pieces and set aside for half an hour in the refrigerator. Step 2 Hang the yogurt in a muslin cloth for fifteen to twenty minutes to remove extra water. Add the ginger and garlic pastes, red chilli and garam masala powders, salt and mustard oil. Step 3 Apply this marinade to the chicken pieces and place them in the refrigerator for three to four hours. Step 4 Preheat the oven to 200 C. String the chicken pieces onto skewers and cook in the preheated oven for ten to twelve minutes or until almost done. Step 5 Baste with the butter and cook for another two minutes. Remove and set aside. Step 6 To make the makhni gravy, heat the butter in a non-stick pan. Add the green cardamoms, cloves, peppercorns and cinnamon. Step 7 Sauté for two minutes, add the ginger and garlic pastes and sauté for two minutes. Add the tomato puree, red chilli powder, salt and half cup of water. Step 8 Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for ten minutes. Add the sugar or honey and powdered kasoori methi. Step 9 Add the cooked tandoori chicken pieces. Simmer for five minutes and add the fresh cream. Serve hot with naan or roti.!5
Woodlea Opens the Completed Aintree Walk of Honour In March 2017, Woodlea opened the first stage of the Aintree Walk of Honour, along Field Street and the Frontier Recreational Reserve. The first phase of the Walk of Honour is a 500m section of tree lined pathway, that commemorates Australia s military involvement in the Boer War ( ) and World War 1 ( ). The Aintree Walk of Honour reflects the spirit of the famous Avenues of Honour to our West, at Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh, explained Woodlea s Chris Bracher. These great avenues and many other memorials were constructed in the wake of World War 1 as communities struggled to come to terms with the loss of so many of their young men. Our Walk of Honour marks our communities contribution to the ANZAC Centenary commemoration spanning the period of The Aintree Walk of Honour is significant for Aintree considering our districts local history. The site where the Woodlea Estate is built was once the Rockbank Receiving Station for the US Army in This coupled with a Transmitting Station at Diggers Rest. A series of huts were built on the site for the radioshack, mess hall, and accommodation under the tree canopy of the remnant Woodlands on Leakes Rd. This site is being preserved as Woodlands by Woodlea because of it s historical and environmental significance. Post 1942, the site served as a site for global communication for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Woodlea has taken inspiration from this story in the construction of various play equipment, particular the towers at Bullion and Frontier Parks.!6
The Aintree Walk of Honour includes plaques that commemorate the loss of Service Personnel that have a local connection to the City of Melton. The Caroline Springs and Melton RSL subbranches have continued to assist and be strong supporters of Woodlea s Walk of Honour project. The current 500m section is being extended along Field Street to a major memorial at the Town Centre, commemorating service men and women, and Australia s involvement in conflicts since World War 1. On November 11, Woodlea will be holding an opening for the completed Aintree Walk of Honour, including a Remembrance Service at 10:45am, hosted by the Caroline Springs RSL. Woodlea Remembrance Display Woodlea is inviting knitters and crocheters to help complete a display of sown, knitted, and crocheted poppies. These poopies are the traditional red colour associated with Remembrance and will be displayed in the Frontier Pavilion. If you would like to contribute by making poppies, see the instructions below, or find simply crocheted/sewn instruction online, and drop all completed poppies to the Woodlea Sales Centre before November 11.!7
