2 2 Letter from your Extension Educator Dear Extension Homemakers, Fire up the Freshness: Grill Summertime Fruits & Veggies -By: Abbey Hewitt, Dietetic Intern 15 Hello! My name is Stephanie Faroh and I am your new Purdue Extension Educator. I was lucky enough to have started before the fair this year so that I had the opportunity to meet many of you. I was able to learn from all of our dedicated workers, see the beautiful exhibits, and most I mportantly, watch how the public enjoyed the creativity of Kosciusko County. I can t thank you enough for the warm welcome and for all of your help to make sure our fair events Incorporating fruits and vegetables into your grilling experience is a great way to incorporate local produce and add some variety to your diet. For yellows, oranges and reds, think peaches, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash or sweet potatoes. To get your greens, think peppers, zucchini, or asparagus! The options and flavors are endless- Enjoy experimenting with produce! went smoothly. It truly was a wonderful fair! Grilled Peaches with Honey Cream I am originally from Logansport, Indiana, and I am now living in Warsaw with my husband, Jimmy, and puppy, Norm. I am a Registered Dietitian, who studied at Indiana University for my Bachelor s Degree and Ball State University for my Ingredients 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2 tablespoons honey, divided 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom Master s Degree. Now I love working for Purdue! 4 medium peaches, pitted and halved Please feel free to give me a call or anytime with your thoughts, comments, and ideas. I d love to hear from you! Cooking spray 1/3 cup plain fat-free Greek yogurt 2 1/2 tablespoons half-and-half 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup raspberries Combine melted butter, 1-tablespoon honey,and cardamom in a medium bowl. Add peaches, and toss to coat. Let stand for 5 minutes faroh@purdue.edu Heat a grill pan over medium heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Arrange peaches on grill pan; grill 2 minutes on each side or until grill marks appear. Combine yogurt, half-and-half, remaining 1-tablespoon honey, and vanilla in a small bowl; stir with a whisk. Serve with peaches and raspberries.

3 14 3 What s all the jazz about juicing? -By: Abbey Hewitt, Dietetic Intern Juicing is full of nutrients, but eliminates a lot of the fiber that makes fruits and vegetables keep our gastrointestinal system regulated and keeps us full to help with weight loss. Think of this: to form 1 cup of carrot juice you must juice anywhere from 3-6 large carrots. If you are considering juicing, it s best to do it in moderation along with a healthy diet. You should avoid juicing if you have health issues such as a lowered immune system. Want to try juicing? 4 Fair Follow-Up (from Stephanie) Thank you to all of you for all of your hard work, especially to Julia Frush and June Thomas for finding judges, collecting donations, and keeping us organized while we were without an Educator. Julia and June, our co-chairs, scheduled a spinner and a knitting club for fairgoers to enjoy. They also scheduled demonstrations so the public could learn to make lotion, create no sew fleece items, crochet rugs, repot house plants, grow succulents, repurpose old jeans, make sour dough bread, create deco mesh wreaths, make more than just cake with a cake mix, practice yoga, enjoy zucchini recipes, and make smoothies. If you missed the fair, you missed great food and great fun! Pressure Canner Testing With all of the fresh fruits and vegetables filling your gardens, it s canning season! Whether you are an avid, experienced canner or you are just learning the tricks of the trade, we recommend that you have your equipment inspected once a year, anytime you drop or damage your equipment, or anytime you have questions. Our superintendents for the departments were as follows: Agriculture, Deanna Myers; Crafts, Sharon Clay and Sharodene Morris; Fine Arts, Kerrie Walls; Foods, Judy Egolf; Food Preservation, Rosalie Lee; Garden Flowers and Plants, Sandy Wise; Herbs, Carolyn Zimmerman; Needlework, Julie Popenfoose; Sewing, Marsha Miller. Our dedicated superintendents had many wonderful assistants who helped with check-in, judging, set-up, and tear-down. Please consider volunteering to help on check-in day or during fair week. We can always use more help and many hands make light work. Visit the Extension Office to test your canner today! Stephanie will do her best to have it finished within 48 hours for you. You may call ahead to schedule an appointment to ensure you have your canner when you need it. Please bring the entire canner in with you if able. You may bring only the lid, but please do not remove the gauge from the lid. There is a $3 charge to inspect your canner.

5 12 5 Michigan City District Fall Meeting Please contact Stephanie by Tuesday, August 12, if you would like to join us for the Fall Meeting. Entries for the departments were as follows: Foods: 82, down 1 from 2013 Canning: 159, up 17 from 2013 Sewing: 44, down 13 from 2013 Crafts: 123, down 8 from 2013 Fine Arts: 75, same as 2013 Flowers: 124, down 38 from 2013 Herbs: 73, down 8 from 2013 Ag: 87, down 6 from 2013 Needlework: 153, up 2 from 2013 Our 2014 total was 920 exhibits, which is down 55 from last year. With check-in being on a holiday weekend and the flowers, herbs, and vegetables not quite ready to show, our numbers were understandably lower. The 2015 fair will be a week later, which will help us avoid the holiday weekend and give our products a little more time. That also gives you an extra week to work on YOUR exhibit for the 2015 fair! Winners of the fundraiser were as follows: Quilt- Lily Miller, Wall Hanging- Connie Himes, Rug- Sharon Clay, Windmill Pillow- Jerry Frush, Patchwork Pillow- Stacey Reed, Quillow- Avis Gunter People s Choice was won by Todd Clay with his fish in the Craft Department. 6 6 11 A few notes from our Treasurer, Betty Bowen: On a county basis, we have sent $ to the Water Around the World Project. Through our International program, we sent $ to the Women Walk the World project (Country Women s Conference). As of Conference time, and on a state wide basis, $104, has been raised for the Purdue Cancer Research Fund. We have raised to date, county wide, a total of $2, for the homeless shelter. This money was raised through the sale of tote bags and items sold at the fair. Sadly, we are losing three Extension Homemaker Clubs with the beginning of our new fiscal year- Modern Homemakers, Keepin On, and Pierceton homemakers. We want to thank them for their long time membership and dedication to home, family, and community. The Moderne Homemakers Club donated their final closing treasurer balance to the Purdue Cancer Research Fund. The Keepin On Club invited a speaker to their church for a presentation on the water purifier project and their congregation gave extension an offering of $ for remittance to the Water Project.

8 8 9 Fair Notes from our Co-Superintendents Thank you to all the superintendents, volunteers, demonstrators, board members; judges, people who donated items for the Silent Auction, and everyone who helped to make this year s fair a success. Julia and I appreciate all the work that goes into making our building look so good. It did look very good this year, didn t it? We also want to give a special thanks to Cathy Schlipf who donated fabric for the totes that we make for the Homeless Shelter and who donated woven rugs for us to sell for the Homeless Shelter. Because of this start of fabric, we are able to give over $2000 towards their building. Also a special thanks to Julia s hairdresser, Karen Wood, from Stockwood Hair Design, who sold over $1000 worth of the totes we made. It just shows how much can be accomplished when we all work together. All who helped need to pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. Our overall exhibits were down a few in number, but we attribute that to being right next to the July 4 holiday. Next year we will have that holiday further behind us when we take in the entries, so the number should be up. As always, if you have any suggestions for improvements to the building, please don t hesitate to share them with Julia or me or Stephanie. We will certainly give them consideration. June Thomas and Julia Frush Co-Superintendants Camp Elko Some familiar faces are going on a Treasure Hunt for more Kosciusko County Homemakers to join them on the Camp Elko Retreat! The theme this year is Treasure Hunters, so mark your calendar for September 8-9, 2014, to join the fun! ** See insert for Agenda and Registration. ** If it will be your first time to Camp Elko, ask your club president about our First Timer Award! A Letter from Doris Ann Slaymaker: My next event I want to attend is Camp Elko Retreat at Camp Mack. Cancer is a hard thing to live with, but one must make the most of each day. The Camp Committee has planned a program around treasures. I am looking forward to Monday evening hearing the Harp music. July weather has not been hot. They say August weather will be cooler. September should be just right. A night with a roommate can be nice and the lake breeze coming through the windows will put you to sleep. Registration is due August 15, Add to the fun, bring a treasured friend.
