1 April 2010 Newsletter Homemakers Annual Meeting Thursday, April 22-6:00 p.m. Nazarene Church Wisdom In My Apron Pocket Celebrating 60 years of Extension Homemakers in Wayne County! All Wayne County Homemakers (Active and Mailbox members) are invited to the 60th County Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 22 6:00 p.m. at the Nazarene Church. Bring a dish or two of food for the potluck meal. Also, remember to bring a serving utensil for your food. Meat, drinks and paper products will be provided. All clubs are to bring a door prize valued at $ We would like to decorate with vintage kitchen items and we need your help. We are asking members to bring vintage kitchen utensils/items to use for decorations. If you have a collectible or collection you would like to share as a center piece please let us know as soon as possible by calling Cooperative Extension Service Wayne County 255 Rolling Hills Blvd Monticello, KY (606) Fax: (606) We will have a clothesline hanging around the room to pin aprons on. Please bring your favorite/special aprons old and new with a note of wisdom pinned to the pocket or front of the apron. We are having an Apron fashion show! Wear your favorite apron. You can enter your apron in categories such as oldies, prettiest, most unusual, etc. Workers will be needed to help with set-up, clean-up and registration. Set-up Silver Thimbles, Charity, Cooper and Craft Club. Clean-up Odds N Ends, Busy Bees, Country Charmers and Family Focus. Registration table -County Officers. You will not want to miss this celebration! It will be lots of fun and we will have great door prizes. Oscar Night Tuesday, May 4 6:00 p.m. Historic Wayne Theater Downtown Monticello This will be a special awards night to celebrate 60 years of Homemakers in Wayne County. We will need your help with pictures and memoirs. These items will need to be at our office as soon as possible. Thank you so much for the few homemakers that have already brought in items. Ladies with your help we can have a wonderful walk down memory lane. * We need an updated, detailed club History from each club by April 15. We will need this information for the cookbook and awards night. Thanks.

2 Christmas Village Planning Last years Christmas Village was great! Everything seemed to flow smoothly and we had a great turn out. Thank you so much for being dedicated and all your hard work at this annual event. Homemakers believe it or not it is time to start planning our 27th Annual Christmas Village.!Save the date Saturday, November 20th for the village date. Our planning meeting will be Tuesday, April 13th -5:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. If you are on the committee for your club please make a special effort to attend and bring lots of ideas. We know that everyone is very busy so we would like to do most of the planning on this date eliminating the need for several meetings. See you Tuesday, April 13th. Order Your Homemaker Shirts We will be ordering Homemaker polo and T-shirts this year. The shirts will be UK blue with white wording. The T-shirts will be $12.00 and the Polo shirt will be We will be doing preorders only. So if you would like a shirt please turn in to the office your size, the style and money by April 30. We will not be reordering. If you want one be sure to get it to us by April 30th. Roll Call: What is the first flowering plant you think of when you think of Spring? If you look at what you have in life, you have everything. - Unknown In the Spotlight Country Charmers Ladies from the Mill Springs area met and formed Country Charmers Homemaker Club in The club held their meetings at the Mill Springs Christian Church until the new Extension Office became available for meetings. Country Charmers club is small in number but abundant in good work ethic and talents. We use these skills to contribute to the County Homemaker efforts and our own club projects. With the help of our dedicated members and grants we have won, we have been able to give back to the community and donate to some great causes. Our meetings are always informal. We share news, have a short business meeting and an educational lesson. We end our meetings with our time of fun, food and fellowship. Country Charmers meet the second Monday night of each month at 6:30 at the Extension Office. We invite you to join us. Here is a poem written by one of our members that shares our feelings about our club: My Homemaker Club We have worked hard and made some crafts, Played hard too, and had lots of laughs. We ve shared sorrows and played fun games, We know each other by our first names. We try to attend each and every meeting, And especially like the ones where we re eating. Our time and talents are gladly giving, We continue to learn great lessons for living. Each homemaker member has become a true friend. We re making a lifetime of memories that will never end.

3 The Extension Office is very excited to be hosting the EXPO at our office this year. We are encouraging everyone to bring your best, check in times for the EXPO will be Tuesday, June 29 from 8:30 to 3:00 at the lower level, the John Rickett Room, of the Extension Office. There will be several changes in the EXPO categories. We will be combining some categories and eliminating others. We are hoping to have some wonderful quality items entered. Some of the most changes will be in the Baking/Foods Division. Classes will be offered at our office to explain some of the changes and to encourage everyone to enter their best. CANDY CLASS April 15, 2010 Come and learn how to make a variety of different Candies. This class will focus on how to make fudge, fancy candy, and other candies such as hard candy. There are some changes in the candy class in the Baking Division of the 2010 Wayne County Fair EXPO. Come enjoy learning about candy and the updated categories of the EXPO! Please call to reserve your spot today. COOKIE CLASS April 29, 2010 Come and learn about the different types of cookies. This class will focus on how to make different types of cookies including: Drop, Bar, Molded, Shaped, and Pressed. There are some changes in the cookies class in the Baking Division of the 2010 Wayne County Fair EXPO. Come enjoy learning about cookies and the updated categories of the EXPO! Please call to reserve your spot today. *Agent will visit Charity Club Tuesday, April 6 6:30 p.m. PIE CLASS May 6, 2010 Come and learn about the different types of pies. This class will focus on how to make different types of pies including: one crust, two crust, and meringue. There are some changes in the pies class in the Baking Division of the 2010 Wayne County Fair EXPO. Come enjoy learning about pies and the updated categories of the EXPO! Please call to reserve your spot today. EXPO ORIENTATION June 15, 2010 The Extension Office is very excited to be hosting the EXPO at our office this year. We are encouraging everyone to bring their best! Many changes and updates have been made to the EXPO classes, divisions, and awards in order to allow participants to bring in their best! We are focusing on quality and not quantity of items entered. Some categories have been combined, reduced, and eliminated due to the limited space that the Extension Office has to display items. The relocation will allow for a controlled temperature environment, higher security, and cleanliness. Come enjoy learning about the new divisions, categories, classes, awards, and new check in procedures for the 2010 Wayne County Fair Expo. Please call to reserve your spot today.

4 4-H Spring Carnival at Extension Office Friday, May p.m. Tenderloin Sale Begins at 10:30 a.m. *Volunteers are needed to help with the tenderloin sale. Call the Extension Office at if you can help. Volunteers Are Needed H o m e m a k e r volunteers are needed to help with the 4-H cooking school each Tuesday in the month of April. We will need at least 4 volunteers from the larger clubs and two from the smaller clubs. Your help is needed and will be appreciated. Your help is appreciated. Cookbook Update Thank you homemakers for getting your recipes in by the end of March deadline. We do have a wide variety of recipes and have homemaker volunteers working very hard entering the recipes in the Typensave program online. (Ladies be sure to keep up with all the volunteer hours and turn them in at the end of the year) We have already had phone calls from folks wanting to know about the cookbook! If all goes as planned we hope to have a new cookbook by August! We will have a Cookbook Sampler Night with samples as a huge promotion kick-off and start our cookbook sales. Watch the newsletter for more details. Be sure to keep the cookbook in mind for birthday, wedding, graduation, Christmas or thank you gifts. BLOOD DRIVE APRIL 20 The next community blood drive is Tuesday, April 20, Noon-6 p.m. at the Extension Office. Clubs to work the drive: Craft Club 1-4 (Home Builders marquee sign) and Odds N Ends 4-6:15 (Town and Country Plaza marquee sign). It is important to have one or two people from your club to work. Bring 3 dozen homemade or deli cookies, or something good for donors to eat. All Homemakers are asked to tell others about the drive anyway you can. 5 Vegetable Pasta Salad 8 oz. (about 3 cups dry) pasta 3/4 c. broccoli flowerets 3/4 c. cauliflower flowerets 3/4 c. sliced cucumber 3/4 c. carrots 1/2 c. nonfat Italian or ranch style dressing Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and cool. Add vegetables and toss with dressing. Chill Seven 1 c. servings Nutrition Facts: Serving size 1c. Calories 140, Total fat 1g, Sodium 200 mg, Carbohydrate 30g, Dietary fiber 2, Sugars 5g, Protein 5 g. Tip: Vegetables purchased in season are less expensive. Recipes can be varied by using seasonal vegetables. Winter Cabbage, potatoes, onions Spring Broccoli, carrots, asparagus, cucumbers, peas, and greens Summer Green beans, zucchini, yellow squash, corn, tomatoes, beets, okra, eggplant, and peppers Fall Cauliflower, turnips, squash, Brussels sprouts, and mushrooms Apple Crisp (No Sugar Added) 7 medium Granny Smith Apples 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 c. Splenda Topping: 2 c. oats 1/4 c. flour 1/4 c. Splenda 1/2 c. margarine, melted. Preheat oven to 350º. Peel and slice apples. Place in greased 9 X 13 baking dish. Add cinnamon and sweetener. Stir until the cinnamon covers all the apples. In a separate bowl, mix topping ingredients. Sprinkle over apple mixture. Bake for 40 minutes. Nutrition Facts: Serving size 4 1/2 X 2 1/2, Calories 210, Total fat 10 g, Sodium 105 mg, Carbohydrate 29g, Dietary fiber 4g, Sugars 11g, Protein 3g. Happy Easter If you plan on attending the State meeting in Lexington you need to let us know as soon as possible. We do have some rooms already reserved. You will need to take care of sending in your own registration. Notice: Late fees will apply for registrations postmarked after April 9.
