1 SSDdance.com Suzy & Lucas Goodin, Owners February, March & April 2015 Constellation Chronicle Summer Schedule is Out! Priority registration for current students will begin April 6th! Inside It seems like the year just began and already it is almost April and we are really gearing up for pictures, rehearsals and recital! Our PACC team just went to their first competition of the season and have many more to go between now and recital time. So why are we already thinking about summer?!?!?! Dance Report Cards... Page 6 Well, summer classes fill up fast and we want to give our current students a chance to claim your spots before we take new students. Our summer classes are very unique- they are geared towards technique and are a great opportunity for dancers to learn some new skills and advance into a higher level class for next fall. It is also when we offer our highly popular Princess Class for ages 3-6. Private lessons are also offered and can be used to work on technique or to learn a solo, duo or trio routine. Check out our class schedule online and register before we open classes to the public on April 20th! Dance Q & A... Page 6 Miss Suzy Recital Volunteers... Page 2 Upcoming Events... 2 Recital Volunteers Needed! Have you checked out the Class Details page yet? If you haven t checked out the class details page online yet, you are missing out on your #1 resource for information on your dancer s class! It is now even easier to find the class details page with the navigation button right on the homepage. Check it out for your picture and rehearsal date/time, tights color and more! SSD is looking for adult volunteers to help make our recital a success! We need volunteers for before, during and after rehearsals and recitals. Many positions are available, from supervising dancers to taking tickets and so much more- it takes a lot of people to create such a high-quality professional show! Since we have three different shows and most dancers only dance in one, many parents choose to watch the show their dancer is in and volunteer to help backstage for a different show. With all of the jobs available, there is something for everyone! There is also a lot of prep work that goes into putting a show together, so volunteers before the rehearsal days are needed too. We pride ourselves in being a dance family and this is your chance to become an active member of our family! If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up by filling out the form on the studio website. There will be two meetings for all volunteers and it is mandatory for all volunteers to attend one of these meetings (you do not need to attend both). It is imperative to the success of the show that all volunteers meet ahead of time to fully understand your role on rehearsal/show day. At this meeting you will receive all the information on your position as well as a wristband that is required to gain access to the backstage area. Meetings will be held on: Monday, May 18th from 7-8pm Tuesday, May 19th from 5-6pm Volunteering is a BIG responsibility, and everyone at SSD would like to thank all of the parents and family members who volunteer at the shows to make them successful. You are the real unsung heroes of these large events! We appreciate you and your involvement with the studio! 2

3 What is the PACC Team and is it right for my dancer? Upcoming Events Entire Studio ~ PACC Team Moose Lake, C-W & pointe pictures Ovation Dance Challenge competition in Fargo, ND Summer registration begins for new students (current students can already register!) PACC Team Informational CMH at 6pm in the Maple Room Celebration Talent competition at the DECC Recital tickets go on sale at noon! Masquerade competition in Hastings Pictures at the FDL Head Start building Spotlight Dance Cup competition in St. Paul Volunteer Mtg 7-8pm Volunteer Mtg 6-7pm No Dance Dress Cloquet High School Recital! Friday 7pm & Saturday 2pm & 7pm PACC stands for Performing Arts Constellation Company. This is our group of dancers that perform locally at nursing homes and other similar events and also attend competitions. There are different levels of commitment and cost depending on the team you choose to try-out for. Our combination PACC teams are very similar to a regular dance class but include additional performances throughout the year. They have class once a week for 45 minutes and learn 2 routines just like most of our regular classes. They usually purchase 2 costumes instead of one and have some additional fees for accessories and competitions that our regular classes don t have. Tuition fees are the same as our regular classes. Summer classes are suggested but not required to try-out for these classes. Our focused PACC classes dance for minutes once a week and only learn one routine per class. Dancers can choose to participate in one class or multiple classes. There are additional class requirements for the most advanced dancers. Tuition fees are the same as regular classes and a single costume is needed for each routine. There are fees for accessories and competitions that vary by level. There are summer requirements that vary by level as well. With all of our PACC teams we focus on teaching the dancers skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. We encourage individual improvement to make each individual the best dancer they can be. Our focus is always on improvement and teamwork over winning. We strive to create a very positive environment where the dancers and instructors support each other and celebrate everyone s success. If you think your dancer might be right for the PACC team, you are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on April 22nd at 6:00pm which will be held at Community Memorial Hospital in the Maple Room. If you can t attend this meeting you can also make an appointment to meet with Suzy individually to discuss your options. She can recommend specific classes that will help your dancer achieve their goals. 3

5 Want to earn studio credit for purchasing gas & groceries? You can earn studio credit for most of your daily purchases when you utilize our Scrip program! What is Scrip? Purchasing Scrip is just like purchasing a gift card for a business, but better! You can purchase a regular plastic gift card or purchase online and print your own cards at home. Whatever amount you spend on the card is the amount that you get on the cardpurchase a $20 gift card and you get a $20 gift card. Gift cards do not expire, there are no limits or catches to what you can purchase at the retailer with them. They are as good as cash when shopping! If they are just gift cards, what is the benefit? Here is where the cool part comes in each retailer will give you back a percentage of your purchase directly onto your dance account! Percentages vary by retailer, but can be upwards of 10% for some businesses. So if you purchase a $20 Scrip card, you get $20 to spend in the store PLUS money on your dance account. THIS IS FREE MONEY!!! You can use your studio credit towards tuition, merchandise, fees, etc anything you could pay cash for! There are no limitations to the amount of studio credit you can receive and no restrictions to what you can purchase with it. What businesses offer Scrip cards? There are hundreds of large retailers that offer Scrip cards. Some of the ones that might interest you from our area are: Walmart (which gets you an additional 3 cents a gallon off at their gas station), Cub Foods, Holiday, BP, Applebees, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Caribou, Starbucks, Claire s, Cold Stone Creamery, Dairy Queen, Dick s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain and TONS more. View them all at What if I don t want to worry about due dates to purchase Scrip? You don t have to! Many of the businesses offer ScripNow which allows you to go online, purchase your Scrip and print it at home within the hour! Imagine it- you are out shopping and find a great deal. You go online on your smartphone, purchase your scrip and pay with PrestoPay, wait for it to show up in your account (they say within an hour, but it s usually within 5 minutes) pull it up on your phone and use it to pay at the store. You just got FREE MONEY into your dance account for something that was already a great deal and you would have bought anyway! It s a win-win! Who can participate in the Scrip program? Anyone can! Parents, grandparents, family, friends, coworkers, anyone who would like to use the program is welcome to. When you enroll you just need to specify which dancer s account your profits will go into (or you can put them into a dance scholarship fund to aid dancers who otherwise could not afford to take lessons). How do I sign up?!?! Grab an enrollment card off the bulletin board at the studio or contact Lori J., the Scrip Coordinator, at Happy Scrip-ing!!! 5

6 Dance Report Cards Instructors will be completing and handing out Dance Report Cards in the next couple weeks. These will give you an overview of how your dancer has been doing form the instructor s perspective and give you an idea of what you can do to further your dancer s education in the art of dance. Please ask your instructor directly if you have any questions on your dancer s progress. Solo, Duo, Trio Sign-Up There is a preliminary solo/duo/trio sign-up sheet at the studio for those interested in taking private lessons over the summer. If you put your name on this list you will be contacted with more information on how to register for private lessons. Private lessons are a chance for dancers to learn a routine or just to work on dance skills with the teacher of their choice. Private lessons are scheduled over the summer months. Feb. Mar. Apr Dance Q & A: You ask, we answer Q: What should I expect on Picture Day? A: Picture day can be chaotic and confusing, but it doesn t have to be that way! You can expect to arrive at the FDL Head Start building at the appointed time and enter directly through the gym doors. Your dancer should be dressed and ready for pictures when you arrive. Parents are not allowed in the photo area so you will be instructed on where to wait while studio staff takes your dancer to the picture area. Make sure your picture envelope is filled out ahead of time to make things go smoothly! You will be given a picture envelope the week before pictures at class Cloquet Avenue Cloquet, MN Q: What should I expect at Rehearsal? A: Rehearsal is a mystery to many new parents! Dancers will be scheduled for a block of time to rehearse. There are usually 4-6 groups scheduled for the same block of time and they will take turns dancing. Please sit together as a class when you arrive. When your dancer is called to go backstage please do not send their dance bag or anything with them. Your dancer will practice their first routine on stage 1-2 times and then will return to their seat in the auditorium to change shoes. They will then wait to be called backstage to rehearse their other routine. We also have a block of time to rehearse the finale routine, which includes all our dancers. Even though dancers learn this in class, it always takes a few times to get it together on stage with all the classes together! Plan to be at rehearsal for your entire scheduled block, however we do send dancers home once they are finished so sometimes they get to leave a little early. Parents should remain at rehearsal with all dancers under 11.
