Characters include: Sir Richard Cholmondely, Lieutenant of the Tower Colonel Fairfax, under sentence of death Sergeant Meryll, of the Yeomen of the Guard Leonard Meryll, his son Phoebe Meryll, his daughter Jack Point, a strolling jester Elsie Maynard, a strolling singer Wilfred Shadbolt, Head Jailer and Assistant Tormentor Stage and music direction will be by Julie May and Bob Binkley. Box 7575, Wilmington, DE You won t want to miss this exciting show! Our Fall 2013 Show, Sleeping Beauty of Savoy (stage direction by Mike Carbone) The show is a British pantomime (panto) play, very loosely based on Sleeping Beauty, including lots of on-stage silliness, some audience participation, and Gilbert & Sullivan music - something for everybody, young and old. Our website, has a link to the libretto. Actors and singers, young and old, will be needed. We will be looking for 13 leads (about evenly split between men and women) and a chorus of courtiers, ladies, servants, minions, and fiends. Rehearsals start in September on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings, with the performances taking place the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. Information about auditions will be available soon (auditions will probably be held two days in early June). To preregister your interest, ardensingers@gmail.com, or phone John Trexler at Afternoon with the Artist at Arden Craft Shop Museum The Arden Craft Shop Museum extends a welcome invitation to all residents and friends of the Ardens to attend Afternoon with the Artist in the Bernie Schwab Community Room on Sunday, April 28, from 1-3 PM. The featured artist is Tegan Harcourt of The Arden School, who will present The Stories of Our Mothers, her individual research project. Harcourt s exhibit will remain on display in the Community Room during the month of May. Tegan Harcourt explains, This show is an oral history and photographic exposition on the lives of some of the women of the World War II generation in the Ardens. I interviewed a group of women with vastly different stories to share. It's the stories of women who don't even think to share their stories. Sometimes we don't think about how magnificent a life someone has until we ask. All I did was ask. Plan to stop by the museum, meet the artist, and enjoy her exhibit. Light refreshments are provided during the opening reception. The Arden Craft Shop Museum is located at 2300 Cherry Lane in Arden. For more information contact Debbie Ricard at or dmricard@msn.com. 2 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR APRIL 2013

CONCERT GILD XPM Welcomes Spinto Band with special guest, Buried Beds Saturday April 6, 2013, 8 PM. Tickets are $10 members, $12 guests at ardenconcerts.com or members concerts@ardenclub.org. Nine months after the release of Shy Pursuit, The Spinto Band swiftly returns with a new full-length record, Cool Cocoon. Recorded again at their Delaware studio and released on Spintonic Recordings, the album represents a remarkable change of pace. There is more collaboration between songwriters, more spontaneity in the recording process and a distinctively focused sonic direction. Combined, these elements have formed their most cohesive album to date. Buried Beds is a chamber pop group from Philly of keyboards, violin, electric guitars, percussion, bass, and excellent, soaring harmonies. Amy Helm Band Friday May 10, 2013, 8 PM. Tickets are $15 members, $18 guests. Opening for Amy is the local powerhouse roots folk rock band New Sweden! Amy Helm's deep musical roots were enriched by a lifetime of exposure to the finest expressions of American musical tradition. Combined with her stunning vocal and other creative gifts, those roots have grown up to reveal a spellbinding artist who moves easily through a broad range of musical styles. The daughter of music legend Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus Fagen, Helm wields a powerful voice that can both stir and soothe, whether she is singing traditional gospel, blues standards, or her own heartfelt compositions. She is a gifted musician on both mandolin and drums, and has clearly absorbed the lessons of the many other accomplished artists with whom she has shared stages, including Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris, and Joan Osborne as well as other uniquely American performers like Dr. John and Hubert Sumlin. A founding member of the roots band Ollabelle with whom she has recorded three CDs, Helm has also performed live with scores of notable musicians such as Warren Haynes, The Wood Brothers, and Donald Fagen, and her distinctive voice can be heard on recordings by artists ranging from Mercury Rev to Marc Cohn. Shady Grove Music Fair Save the Date - June 8, 2013 Shady Grove Music Fest with performances by The Keefs and Brixton Saint with special guest Richard Raw. Visit for more information. LIBRARY GILD Some folks may start to see notices from the Library Gild turning up in their mailboxes or in-boxes. We are going to be more actively trying to have overdue books returned. Over the next 6 weeks we will be contacting library patrons with overdue books by postcard, , and/or phone calls. If you have lost a library book the expectation is that you will replace it or pay a replacement cost. We also have adopted a new policy which will start on May 1, 2013: overdue notices will be sent out quarterly; after the third reminder, a phone call will be made If the book is not returned or replaced within 2 weeks of the phone call, library privileges will be suspended until the matter is resolved. Fines for overdue books are 50 per week for children's books and $1.00 per week for adults books up to a maximum of $2.00 for a child's book and $5.00 for an adult's book. Lost books will be billed on replacement costs. Regular Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 PM, and on Sundays from 2:30 to 4 PM. The Library is also open on Saturday evenings after the dinners from 6:30 to 7:30 or 8. The Library is open to all Arden Club members and all residents of the Ardens. Community Garage Sale The Community Garage Sale will be held on May 25 from 9 AM to 3 PM on the Sherwood Green (across from the Gild Hall). Rain date is June 1. The fee is $8 per space. To reserve a space, call Naomi Clark at and leave a message including your name and phone number. APRIL 2013 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR 3

SHAKESPEARE GILD Much Ado About Nothing Performance dates: June 7-9, 13-15, 21 and 22 Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more, Men were deceivers ever, One foot in sea and one on shore, To one thing constant never. One of the most popular and charming of Shakespeare's comedies, Much Ado About Nothing features Benedick, an arrogant and confirmed bachelor, and Beatrice, his favorite sparring partner. While Beatrice and Benedick hide their infatuation beneath witty barbs, young love blossoms as Hero and Claudio race to the altar. When the wicked Don John conspires to break up the wedding, will false accusations and misunderstandings prevent the young couple's happy ending? Witty wordplay, passionate poetry, and clever plot twists make for delightful theater. As the Club Calendar goes to press, the cast is being selected. Many of our favorite actors will be returning. Watch for some newcomers as well. Performances are June 7, 8, 13-15, 21 and 22 in the evening, plus a matinee on Sunday, June 9. They are outdoors at the Frank Stephens Memorial Theatre (a.k.a. the Field Theater) adjacent to the Arden Green. Performances move to the Gild Hall in case of inclement weather. Reservations open in May. Join the Crew The Gild always welcomes (and needs) new production crew. From parking cars, selling refreshments, and building props to preparing the theater, applying makeup, and more, we have jobs big and small that need doing. To become part of the backstage excitement, contact Laura Wallace at laurawallace@verizon.net or (cell) and she ll match you up with a job on our crew. Meetings & Readings Regular meetings of the Arden Shakespeare Gild are held on the first Wednesday of each month in the Bratten Room of the Lower Gild Hall. Business meetings start promptly at 7:30 PM, followed by informal readings starting around 8. Anyone is welcome to prepare a favorite speech or monologue for reading. Or write your own sonnet! The next Gild meetings are April 3 and May 1. SCHOLARS GILD "Do the right thing! Once you figure out what it is." Tuesday evening, April 16, at 7:30 (Lower Gild Hall). When you have choices, what should you do? Simply do the right thing! But how do you choose what is the right thing? Some people say the climate is changing faster than at any time in the last 10,000 years. Others say we are seeing natural cycles in the climate. Who is correct? Does it even matter? This month's discussion will look at how to choose the right path for action to address climate change. We will look at tradeoff analysis by asking the question of what are the possible outcomes and consequences. By using tradeoffs, we can look at a difficult problem, such as global climate change, and focus on the important part of the issue. Can this same approach be used to evaluate heath care, funding for infrastructure, and many other questions? The discussion will start with climate change. You will have to join us to find out if we discuss specific issues or the use of tradeoff analysis. We will be in the Lower Gild Hall on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 PM, for this discussion. I know, it sounds kind of geeky, but this is the Scholars Gild after all. If you are interested in receiving announcements for the Scholars Gild, please send a request to ArdenScholarsGild@gmail.com, include your name and address. 4 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR APRIL 2013

GARDENERS GILD Annual Plant Swap The Gardeners Gild Annual Plant Swap is scheduled for Monday, April 1 at 7:30 PM in the Lower Gild Hall. The sun has melted the snow and all the plants are coming up. This is the time to prepare for the Annual Plant Swap. So DO dig up your extras... flowers, bulbs, vegetables, any plants that need thinning. Your extra seeds and any house plants you are tired of tending are also welcome. If you can attach the name of your plants and their care needs, it will make it easier for their new owners. Be ready for fun and refreshments. Please bring your donation for the Gild, $1 Arden Club members/$2 non-members. For any questions call Maura Lynch at , or call Ruth Bean, who plans to lead this favorite event. Spring Plant Identification Walk The Gardeners Gild will meet on Sunday, April 21, 2013, from 1 to 4 PM. We will join botanist Janet Ebert for a Spring Plant Identification Walk. From buds to stalks, Janet is THE local expert on plant identification. She has over 20 years of professional experience in botany. The State of Delaware hires her for plant inventories and to search for rare plants. Her Winter Plant Walk in February, 2012, was well received and we are delighted to have her with us to observe the seasonal changes. We will meet in front of the Gild Hall at 1PM. Bring any plant specimens or photographs you may have that are in need of identification, and we will discuss them before the walk. Wear suitable walking shoes or boots and dress for the weather. You are welcome to bring your children. We will explore the Arden area within easy walking distance of the Gild Hall. Truly inclement weather would result in postponement. If in doubt, or if you have questions, contact Elaine Schmerling at This event is being presented with support from the Nancy Ellen Banis Memorial Education Fund. Please bring your donation for the Gardeners Gild as follows: $1 from Arden Club members or $2 from non-members. We look forward to seeing you there! Day Trip to Dumbarton Oaks On Saturday, May 25, 2013, the Gardeners Gild will visit the Garden of Dumbarton Oaks in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. We have rented a 24-passenger bus, and will depart Arden at 7:30 AM, arriving at Dumbarton Oaks for a private tour of the Garden at 10:30 AM. The Garden at Dumbarton Oaks was one of the major works of Beatrix Farrand, a prominent American landscape architect who, in 1899, was one of the 11 founding members of the American Association of Landscape Architects. Neoclassical in design, the Garden incorporates many native plants into rooms. This is a 10-acre garden with some rolling terrain and no stairs so be prepared to climb some gentle hills. Following the tour of approx 1 ½ hours, participants will have the chance to explore the Georgetown area further, including nearby Tudor Place, with its 5 ½ acre garden, or may visit other nearby gardens and local attractions. The bus will return to Arden to drop us off by 9:30 PM. The price of this trip per participant will be $35 for Arden Club Members, or $40 for non-members, which will include roundtrip mini bus transportation plus the cost of the group tour of the Garden at Dumbarton Oaks. This event is being presented with support from the Nancy Ellen Banis Memorial Education Fund. Participation is limited given the capacity of the bus. RSVP is requested no later than April 24, and participants will be required to make a non-refundable payment to the Arden Club for the cost of the trip when they make their reservations. To RSVP, please call Maura Lynch or Barbara Conway at Evening of Art at the Buzz The Buzz Ware Village Center is proud to announce an opening reception featuring the art of Sara Russell on Friday evening, April 5, from 6-9 PM. Russell s show is a collection of paintings inspired by the simple beauty this artist finds outside her own back door everyday. This may be a bird on a branch or a flower at the end of its life drying in her mother's garden. Russell s art depicts sometimes whimsical and other times literal vignettes of uncomplicated moments in a day. Sara Russell takes these 'snapshots' of what she sees and translates them into illustrations with watercolor, pen, and ink. Complimentary refreshments, cash bar available. Looking ahead to May, please mark your calendar to stop by the Buzz and enjoy an exhibit by watercolorist Rosemary Connelly on Friday, May 3, from 6-9 PM. Local artists who would like to be scheduled for an art show at the Buzz should contact Debbie Ricard at or dmricard@msn.com. APRIL 2013 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR 5

POETRY GILD Meetings The next Poetry Gild meetings are Tuesdays, April 9 and April 30 at 7 PM in the backstage gallery at Arden Gild Hall. The Arden Poetry Gild was created to encourage, cultivate, and showcase original spoken-word poetry. The meetings consist of: 1). Reading poems by classic and modern poets, which would provide exposure to great poets as well as inspiration for aspiring and local poets. 2). The majority of every meeting will have an open mic and sign-up list for local poets to perform their poetry in front of an audience throughout the meeting The business meeting, for those who wish to join the Gild and vote on Gild business, will begin at 7 PM in the Backstage Gallery connected to the Arden Gild Hall. Look for the "POET" signs. For those who wish only to participate in the reading, the general poetry reading will begin at 7:30 PM. Please bring original spoken-word poetry to showcase for the group, and/or a poem by one of your favorite poets to share. You may also bring refreshments for the group to share. A suggested donation of $2 will be happily accepted to help with gild operations. For more information about the Arden Poetry Gild: Please contact us at ardenpoetrygild@gmail.com, or find us on Facebook. Writers and Poets: You Are Welcome Hither! FROM THE PRESIDENT Gild Hall Renovations Fundraising Update To date, 62 donors have contributed $8,205 to the campaign. We are raising money this year to fund a new floor for the Library, a new ceiling and lighting for the Backstage Gallery, a new stage for the Shady Grove, a wheelchairaccessible bathroom in Lower Hall plus staining the wrap-around porch and painting the rear and side of the Hall. We need more donations in order to be able to complete these important projects this year. You can see the impact of your past donations with the many improvements that have been made to the Hall in the past 3 years. If you gave $50, you bought one of the new lights in the front or side of the hall. If you gave $500, you funded the painting of our chimney. Our House leader, Jamie Jamison stretches your donation dollars very effectively. Please consider giving now. Remember, your donations are fully tax deductible Here are the donors (from January14 through March 18) who are helping make our needed renovations a reality: Anonymous (1), Jane & Jonathon Claney; Carrie Cooper & Jon Williams; Jane Frelick; Judith Kay McClintock; Sondra Meyers; Atul & Lillian Shah. Tributes: In memory of David A. McClintock; in honor of Linda Toman. Also, thanks to George Brocklesby for running concerts featuring local bands, with the proceeds going to the Gild Hall Renovations Fund. Also, remember the Gild Hall Renovations Fund in your estate planning. Cindy and Steve Cohen have done so. We want the Gild Hall to be here for many more generations to enjoy. The Georgist Gild is cooking up a Vegetarian Feast on Saturday, April 13, with Laura Wallace and Linda Eaton. The Georgist Gild will hold evening seminars and films related to the land value tax and Henry George. Contact Sadie for more information or to be on the list. From the Membership Desk Did you know that new and renewing Arden Club members may choose to pay for more than one year of membership when writing their dues check? Those who wish to take advantage of this option should note on both the membership form and the check memo line the number of years for which they are remitting dues. For example, Senior members may renew for 2 years for only $30. Household membership for 2 years is $100 and Adult membership for 5 years is $100. One advantage of renewing for multiple years is the knowledge that your Arden Club Calendar will arrive in your mailbox without interruption for the duration of your extended membership. If you lead a busy life, this may be an option worth your consideration. Your membership is appreciated. Whether you join the Arden Club for 1 year or multiple years, you are encouraged to enjoy all of the activities and events sponsored by the Gilds of the Arden Club. Let's Play Bridge! If you are a bridge player and went to meet nice, friendly bridge players, join our Bridge Interest Group the first and third Thursday's each month from 6:30 to 9 PM in the Lower Gild Hall. The April dates are the 4th and the 18th. Arden Club members pay $2 and non-members pay $3. See you there!
