Member Registration (Webpoint) is Open NOW! Your Webpoint login from last year is good through October 31. If you wait until November 1 or later, your login will be cleared out of the system. You will need to get help from the Registrar. If you have moved, changed your name, or are registering from another region, you will need to contact the Registrar in order to make any of those changes.

From the President Charles Ezigbo, CHRVA President Hopefully, you ended your summer on a restful note and are ready for another season of indoor volleyball. We hope you were able to take advantage in some of the summer CHRVA sponsored activities such as the various grass or beach events. As we prepare for the 2014/2015 season, we wish to welcome new volunteers who have stepped up to add their skills and expertise in an attempt to make your CHRVA experience even better. Welcome to Jeremy Sands (Men s Coordinator), Cindy Hillard (Junior Boys Program Administrator), and Chris Cant (Junior Girls 15/16 Coordinator). A big THANK YOU is in order to the folks who previously held those positions, Julie Briggs (who continues to hold her various other responsibilities), Rob Lewandowski, and Bill Musser, respectively. Thanks also goes out to all who are serving, or who have served, on the staff or board of the Chesapeake Region to help to grow the region in order to create opportunities and resources for our members. Here are just some of the things the staff works at providing our membership: Men s and Women s Adult Competition Junior Boy s and Girl s Competition Adult and Junior Sand and Grass Events Junior Indoor and Beach High Performance Adult Professional League Volleyball (PVL) Officials Training and Development Hosting the Adult and Junior Regional Tournaments Quarterly Newsletter (DIGS) Coaching Education in the form of IMPACT and CAP Clinics Website presence and Blogs Buying Alliance All of these take countless hours of behind the scenes dedication and work, and a debt of gratitude goes to all those who work hard to make this all happen. Please be sure to read other parts of this newsletter to properly plan for the upcoming season. Of particular note is the implementation of the solid color jersey requirement for JUNIOR teams (see Official s section of the website). The CHRVA region has delayed this uniform requirement for ADULT teams, for in-region play, until next year. There are other points of interest in the Officials section, such as easier recertification requirements. So don t forget to read that section carefully. Have a safe end of summer and see you on the courts!

Commissioner s Corner Lisa DiGiacinto, CHRVA Commissioner As I write this article it is a beautiful 83 degrees outside but I know the indoor volleyball season is about to get underway. Preparation for the upcoming indoor season is well underway for our members. You will have the opportunity to meet a few new staff this season. Please welcome Chris Cant, Cindy Hillard, and Jeremy Sands in their new roles. What are their new roles you ask? Well, read on in the newsletter to find out their new staff positions and how they can help you this season. Membership Renewal: Open NOW! Renewal of your membership for the 2014 season begins on September 1, In order to stay current with your membership you must renew by October 31, (If you wait, you will need to request a new login for Webpoint.) Remember, to look on the website for directions for everything you need to be active in our region. Our award winning website gives you all of the information you need to manage your players, teams, coaches, etc. Insurance for Practices and Tournaments Certificates of insurance for practices or tournament hosting will need to be requested again in order for your practice or tournaments to be covered by USAV insurance. Remember, all participants must be USAV/CHRVA members for the USAV coverage to be valid. So if you use a site where multiple sports are being played, the USAV insurance only covers our CHRVA sanctioned volleyball activity. When requesting certificates of insurance you must supply me with your team/club name and address, the facility name, address, and dates of use for EACH facility (insurance covers the facility not the group). For junior clubs, before you request certificates of insurance, you must have your tryout schedule approved. If you are a team or club that does not use the USAV insurance, you must provide me with a copy of your own insurance prior to the start of any activities. Allow three-five business days to receive your certificate once you me the information at commissioner@chrva.org. Time to lace up those shoes and play volleyball!

Adult Program Update for the 2015 Season Julie Briggs, Adult Program Director Welcome Jeremy Sands Jeremy Sands, the head Volleyball coach at St. Mary s College on the Eastern Shore, has signed on as the new Men s Tournament Coordinator. Jeremy has played USAV ball in other regions in the past. Because he has not played in this region, he will be new to how the CHRVA Adult Program operates, but he will learn quickly. He should have his and access to change the men s page of the website very soon. Karen, Joan, and I are looking forward to working with him and I am sure that all the men s team reps will be in good hands. Reminders for Renewing Your Membership Only the Registrar can do the following for you and your teammates: Change your name (if you don t change your name in the system, but use another name for your officials certifications, your certifications won t show up on your record) Change your mailing address Move your registration from another region to CHRVA (Tell your teammate(s) to speak to the CHRVA registrar before registering in another region) Remember to choose your club. If you leave it at the default of undecided, your team rep will not be able to add you to your team roster. If you are not sure of your club name, find out before your register. If you or your teammate(s) are registering as Collegiate, the registration is not complete until the Registrar has received proof of fulltime student status. This can be ed as a PDF. No registration is complete without payment! For questions, contact the Registrar, Barb Cline at registrar@chrva.org. New Rule for Uniforms 1. Either the libero or the rest of the team must wear solid uniform jerseys OR both may wear solid-colored jerseys as long as the libero jersey is contrasting 2. The solid colored jersey must be in contrast to the other jersey or jerseys 3. Numbers must be in contrasting color to uniform jersey There are additional rules in regards to sleeves, trim, design and logos. However, the Board has agreed to allow the Adult teams to put off following those rules until the 2016 season. This is for in-region play ONLY. If you plan to play at Nationals, you ll need to follow the uniforms rules as laid out in the rule book, the CHRVA website, and the Digs article. Other regions may choose to follow the rules as well.

Team Registration (for Team Reps) The process is the same. 1. You fill out the top portion of the form with your team name, club name (if applicable), division, and gender, and your contact info. 2. For the returning players, you only put their names. However if someone has moved, this is how you report that info to the Registrar. 3. For players who are either new in general or new to your team, you must fill out all info for those players. 4. If any of your players fit the Collegiate membership category, they cannot be added to your roster until those players have sent proof of their student status to the Registrar. This must be sent every year. 5. Any players who are younger than 18 must submit the special permission form signed by a guardian even if the player is already registered as a Junior player. 6. Finally, if you add anyone to your team who was a member of another region last season, that player must make a written request ( is fine) to the Registrar or the Commissioner to have that membership transferred. That player will not be able to register in Webpoint until this is done. 7. The team registration form allows for digital signatures. Please the EXCEL document (no PDFs please) to the Registrar. She will verify that all players are fully registered and paid and then issue you a team number. You must have a team number. No team number will create problems for you when you try to enter tournaments. Reffing and Scoring The online USA Volleyball Academy is up and working. See the Referee and Scorer articles and the CHRVA website for more information on getting certified and maintaining your certification. Fellowships In the past CHRVA has held Fellowships, or practice tournaments, to give teams an opportunity to audition new players without having to make a season-long commitment, and for the Region to rate and train new referees and scorers. As we go to publication of this issue of Digs, there are no Fellowships scheduled. Past hosts are either not in a position to host this season or were not able to obtain facilities. Please watch the Adult webpages on the CHRVA website in case something changes by the end of September. Ratings Tournaments If you have players on your team who plan to become certified officials, they will to get rated at any of the tournaments in December. All Adult tournaments will offer opportunities to get ratings during pool play. Ratings will be offered BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Who to contact for appointments will be published on the Adult webpages on the CHRVA website once the schedule is finalized. The following format and rules will apply at all December Ratings Tournaments: Ratings will only take play during pool play. The referee rater will be the R2 (down ref) and will stop the match for all flagrant bad calls or reverse wrong calls and replace with do-overs where appropriate

The work team will be required to provide a certified scorer for every match or will have to pay for one Matches will consist of two sets to 21 points for 5-team pools and three sets to 21 points for 4-team pools, but will be scheduled as if the sets were being played to 25 so that there will be wiggle room on timing so that the raters can speak to the candidates after the match No split playoffs No ref discounts will be offered and no ref penalty fees will be collected (to make it fair for everyone) Program Changes Split playoffs will be continued but the format and points will be tweaked according to popular demand The point system has been changed for all formats of tournaments The new USAV Molten ball is the approved ball for adult competition. These should be used when a host is providing new balls. However, the rule for used balls as outlined in the Handbook is still in effect. Members in good standing who are not attached to an adult team may be borrowed by teams that cannot fill out their rosters for a tournament. That member may play TWICE, whether it be twice with one team or once each with two different teams, before they must attach themselves to an adult team. These borrowed players will be considered as being borrowed from outside of your club so those rules apply (see the Handbook). Also, rules in regards to level of play will also be in effect. The level will be considered the level that the players have put on their membership. (So, if a player has declared A and a BB team wants to borrow that person, it is not considered legal) Please see the CHRVA Handbook and/or the Adult webpages on the CHRVA website for any other changes and further details. We all hope that these changes bring you many enjoyable playing opportunities. Have fun! Adult Program Staff Men s Coordinator Jeremy Sands jeremy.sands@chrva.org WAA/A Coordinator Joan Ryan joan.ryan@chrva.org WBB/B Coordinator Karen Love karen.love@chrva.org Director Julie Briggs julie.briggs@chrva.org Any one of us is happy to answer any questions or help you out.

Juniors News Dado Singer, Juniors Program Director Fall marks the time when we transition from outdoor volleyball back to indoor. Check your local club websites for clinics to help you get ready for the indoor club season. The Juniors Recruiting Policy has been updated and can be found on the website. The major change for players is in what constitutes an offer to play for a club/team. This year an offer must be in writing, either by an electronic means such as , or by non-electronic means such as a hard copy of a contract. As in the past, once an offer has been extended it is in effect until the end of the Open Tryout Period. Please see the policy for more information. The Junior s section of the CHRVA webpage now shows a map specifying the location of clubs in each area. This will ease the search to find a club in a particular geographic area. Now, if you click on Club Locations tab from the left hand menu on the Junior s section of the webpage, you can see which clubs are registered in each area. It is possible that a club that practices near you won't have a pin in that area, since each pin represents the contact address provided to the region for the club. However by contacting nearby clubs directly, you can get exact practice locations. Girls Girls tryouts will be held from November 1-10 for teams in the 13U age group (and younger) and November 8-17 for age groups 14 and older. You can click on Tryout Dates on the Girls section of Juniors on the CHRVA website to see the specific tryout dates and times for the clubs in which you are interested. Unfortunately we were unable to secure a convention center for the 2015 Girls Regional Championships. We are currently in the process of lining up venues and will have dates and locations posted as the season goes on. The Open division will once again be played over two days. Club division will be one day. Boys Update Congratulations to the Boys Teams that attended the Boys Junior Nationals in Houston in July. Teams from BRYC, NVVA, Annapolis VBC (AVC), and MVP attended. In all, eight teams from CHRVA attended: Four in the Open division; and Four in the Club division. Although not really a high school sport in our area, CHRVA is sending as many teams to Nationals as our neighboring regions that do have volleyball as a high school sport! Way to go CHRVA Boys, Coaches, and Parents!

At the May Boys East Coast tournament in Richmond, NVVA Fire won the 16U Open division, and the BRYC 17U team came home with silver in 17Open. To bring home silver, BRYC 17s had to beat out a perennial powerhouse from PA in the semi-finals. It was this match that drew parents and players six people deep to stand, watch, and cheer as both sides pounded the ball home, and dove and dug balls. Congrats to these boys, but also to all the teams that went to BEC. CHRVA was represented well. In 2015 we are looking for even more clubs to host Boys teams. It will take boys signing up and clubs finding coaches to work with the boys. Last year we had several clubs start boys teams that were new to CHRVA including ACE and AVC. We are working to grow the number of CHRVA boys teams again this year. If your club is looking to start a boys program and wants assistance or ideas, please contact Cindy Hillard (cindy.hillard@chrva.org) or Bree Seeger (bree.seeger@chrva.org). We will pitch in and help wherever we can Outdoor Volleyball Summary 2014 was a banner year for the Outdoor Volleyball Program. The total number of Juniors events exceeded previous years. An estimated juniors participated across the region. Clubs initiated training and events in April, and many will continue for the first time though October. The MAV First Rites of Summer hosted the largest number of juniors and totaled more than 70 nets. USAV High Performance Beach tryouts grew to more than 90 participants. Twenty participated in the CHRVA Region s highly-rated High Performance Beach Camp (July 7-10) led by BCAP certified coach Kris Wojeick. Sixteen CHRVA juniors traveled to Hermosa, CA as part of the CHRVA Regional HP Beach Team in age divisions U15, U17, and U19. In addition, six boys from our region and several girls were invited to attend national HP camps. CHRVA Juniors were competitive at the National Championship with top finishes in gold, silver, and bronze brackets. Two of our U19 girls were offered positions in collegiate sand programs at University of South Carolina (Shannon Williams) and Stetson University (Samantha Harris). U19 boy (Cameron Rodrigues) was invited to join the USA Youth National Beach Volleyball Team. Cam and his partner from California finished fourth in the gold division overall beating Canadian teams, the USA third seed, and took both the top and second seed teams to close third games at the Beach High Performance (National) Championship. CHRVA held its first Junior Beach Tour (JBT) stop in Delaware. Although the event shared the same weekend as CHRVA indoor tryouts, DC Doubles, Pre-Pottstown, Dig Pink, and a tournament at Virginia Beach the event hosted 55 teams (110 juniors). Several teams won bids and were invited to travel to Milwaukee, WI to participate in the JBT National Championship. Outside of USA volleyball events, Shannon Williams and Samantha Harris finished third at the AAU East Coast Championship in New York, beaten only by top USA A1/HP teams that traveled to New York City from California. Samantha Harris and Giovanna Borgiotti teamed to win Women s A at the East Coast Surfing Championship at Virginia Beach. Jordan McKinney, with her HP-A2 partner, won Women s BB at the same event. Samantha and Cameron teamed to win co-ed A at ECSC defeating good friends Giovanna and Courtland (from Virginia Beach). Our juniors also won adult divisions at MAV, FCV, TVA, and V2 on the east coast, and CBVA events in California.

Coaches and parents who traveled to national events to support our juniors determined we can compete on a national stage, but our kids need more touches and experience overall. To help those interested in playing collegiate sand, we are working with clubs to develop programs to extend the outdoor season for our regions players. Kids Gone Beach Volleyball will be running Sunday Sand. This program is designed to minimize conflicts with High School programs. Sunday Sand encourages juniors to participate in Sunday tournaments through September, and will hold sand training and a ladder system in October and beyond, weather permitting! This pilot program is for both boys and girls, and will be led by former AVP Pro, Andrew Dentler. Co-ed play is encouraged. It helps the boys learn to communicate and the girls to play a faster, and more competitive game. We will be working with local clubs to extend leagues and opportunities so CHRVA juniors can compete as long as weather will permit. Please contact Coordinator, Irv Rodrigues at irv.rodriques@chrva.org, if you have any questions or need additional information. Several organizations hope to add both grass and sand events to the 2015 schedule. We are encouraging all to expand the date range between April and October. The Region is considering updating forms, and policies to accommodate the growth and new interest in the sport. Many items will be considered this fall to help grow our outdoor opportunities for In 2014 there were more than 40 collegiate sand programs, which are expected to grow to more than 60 in CHRVA has established itself as a leader in outdoor volleyball with the most extensive offerings for juniors. We hope to continue our success in 2015.

Boys Wanted: Junior Boys Teams Are Forming in October Many adult players and parents have never seen a boys tournament, but it is an exciting event to watch. You might wonder why you have not seen one. It is primarily because in CHRVA, girl players out number boy players almost 100 to 1. However, the CHRVA Boys program and the team numbers are growing every year. In many cases it just takes more boys to sign up. Although small in team numbers, our boys teams competed well on a national level at the Boys Juniors Nationals in July in Houston. More than 30% of the Boys teams from CHRVA attended. So the opportunity for your boys to get in to volleyball now and learn quickly is exceptional. From July in Houston, fast forward to October, and Boys teams are forming all around CHRVA. So if you have a boy in your family or have friends with boys, suggest they go to a tryout. While experience and training is wonderful, many 14U boys start with no experience, and older boys (15U and 16U) transition quickly from other competitive sports. Send your boys out to a tryout. They will love it just like you do! If you have any questions, contact the Boys Program administrators, Cindy Hillard (cindy.hillard@chrva.org) or Bree Seeger (bree.seeger@chrva.org). Go Boys!

PVL Program Update Daniel Davidson, General Manager With the shortening of the days and the inevitable decline of temperatures, our collective gaze has now turned to the indoor season. As the General Manager of the Chesapeake Rising Tide, I am excited to share the outlook for the upcoming PVL season. By way of review, PVL, or Premiere Volleyball League, is USA Volleyball s effort to create a professional volleyball league in the United States. Going into its fourth year of operation, each of the 40 volleyball regions is invited to assemble a team for competition in regional qualifiers and at PVL Nationals. Our region is one of just a few to have both a men s and women s selection: the Chesapeake Rising Tide. Last year s PVL season was comprised of 25 men s and women s teams from around the country. CHRVA s Rising Tide held tryouts in March. Its two squads of 35 full-time players trained for three months and competed in (and won!) several regional tournaments, including Pop Idell and a GEVA/NERVA tri-match. In May, both teams traveled to PVL Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona where the women finished ninth and the men finished second! The season will be even better! The Rising Tide will look to hold tryouts in the December/January time frame. s will go out around November with final dates and locations, but the best way to remain abreast of details is to regularly check the Rising Tide webpage, off of the main CHRVA site. Following tryouts, the Rising Tide will begin competing in qualifiers against other East Coast PVL teams, including: Carolina (W) Keystone (M) Garden Empire (M,W) New England (M,W) Iroquois (M) The Rising Tide will look to make appearances at CHRVA Juniors tournaments for exhibition matches and PVL qualifiers. We will be tightening up the schedule throughout the fall and winter, so please continue to check out the Rising Tide website for updates. In May, both squads will undoubtedly head to Detroit for Open Nationals in search of PVL Gold as they once again battle on the big stage against the top players in the nation. Look for an update in the winter issue of DIGS, and follow us on Twitter

Finally, and most important, as the General Manager, I am open to any and all ideas on how to improve the program, including sponsorship/fundraising ideas, locations for exhibition matches, or opportunities for clinics/outreach. So please send your questions, comments, and suggestions to Rising.Tide.GM@chrva.org! Go Tide!

From the Scorer s Table Dixie Collins, Scorer Chair WELCOME TO THE SEASON! If you are reading this article to find out how to become a newly certified scorer or to maintain your scoring certification, I am glad you are interested in staying informed. Let your friends know what you read here and encourage them to read this information as well. If you let your certification lapse, and you keep score at a sanctioned tournament, you are jeopardizing your eligibility, your team s eligibility, and your referee rating. Everything you need to know should be on the Chesapeake Region website. Read and re-read all the information and, if you still have questions, I ll do my best to answer them for you. Call ( ) or me. Clinic Attendance Policy All clinics and tests will be accessed on the Learning Management System. It is up and working. There is NO Scorer List Please check your individual CHRVA registration profile for verification of your certification and your expiration date. Use this information to help you decide what you will need to do to become a scorer or maintain your certification. There will be information on the CHRVA website under the Officials tab with the specifics. If you have any doubt or question about your status, please contact me or my assistant Lynette Muller at lynette.muller@chrva.org. Notice to CHRVA Referees-All Levels It is a requirement in this region that ALL Referees (Player, Provisional, Regional, Jr National, and National) be certified scorekeepers. Please make sure that your certification is current and that you are completely knowledgeable on the scoring techniques. Being up to date ensures that you will be instructing others in the latest and greatest techniques. You MUST also be a CHRVA registered member of the current season. The new season started September 1, Common Mistakes There are a few reminders of scoring practices that you need to be aware of for the upcoming season: There should NOT be a circle in the running score column unless there is a penalty point. Do not circle the final score in the running score column (the column with all the numbers). You should circle the last service round box (the boxes with the teeny tiny numbers) with the final scores for each team making sure that at least one team has a score of 25 or higher. Fill in the set results and the match results. If the match is only two sets, fill in 2-0, or 1-1.

All SANCTIONS are carried over for the MATCH. That means that any time there is a sanction, it should be copied to the SANCTIONS section for all sets. If separate scoresheets are being used, and a sanction occurred in Set 1, it would be copied to the scoresheets for Set 2 and 3. A wrong server is not a sanction and is no longer recorded on the scoresheet in the sanctions section or remarks section. The only indication there was a wrong server would be no teeny check on the teeny number in the service round box. There is a place on the scoresheet for the 1 st referee to sign indicating that the results are correct. After the scorekeeper signs the scoresheet acknowledging that all the information on the scoresheet is correct and complete, the captain (or coach) from each team will sign and then the referee will sign. Volunteers Thank you to the folks who volunteered to help with the scoring program last season: scorer assistants, raters, scoresheet reviewers, volunteer scorers at Regionals, and all those who kept score and helped someone else keep score. We will need lots of help again this season. Please me your contact information and let me know what you are interested in doing to help out. If you have sent information before, please do so again. I will update my records. If you are interested in rating at a fellowship in November, December, or January, please let me know. If everyone volunteers for a little bit, it makes the job more manageable for all. Thanks in advance. Scoresheet Review The Scoresheet Review Committee will be pro-active again this season. Their names and addresses are listed in the Staff section of the website. IMPORTANT!!! If you are hosting a tournament this season, it is your responsibility to send the completed scoresheets to the appropriate person for review within one week of the tournament date. Reviewing the scoresheets helps us identify problem areas such as the most common scorer errors, non-certified scorers, non-chrva registered scorers, etc. Help us help you by staying current. NATIONAL SCORER REQUIREMENTS Those interested in becoming a National Scorer must not only prove their competence through keeping score during matches, but by their eagerness to participate in the Region. Requirements listed below. In order to remain in good standing, National Scorers in the Chesapeake Region must assist the program by actively participating. Assist Junior scorers at tournaments during January and February Assist with the certification process by being a rater Assist the Fellowship Committee with scheduling candidates for ratings Serve on the Scoresheet Review Committee Volunteer to keep score at Regionals

Yes, there is a lot going on, and we ask all of you to do your best to help out. Check the CHRVA website for continuous updates. GOOD LUCK in the coming season and may all your scoresheets be perfect.
